Living In a AM'sters Paradise

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

One of the best pure Ametuer courses that I've played. Think Idlewild but without those Gold-level distances. One decent concrete tee and one decent basket keep it old-school simple. Nice informative tee signs and plenty of next tee signs where needed. Rec/Am distances from around 150-350' set in a moderately wooded dedicated area of the park with nice elevation changes on almost every hole. The fairways range from generous to slightly technical with denser rough/woods on the perimeter. The course is scenic and fun and even has a couple of signature-type holes, really!

The course is very well maintained. Didn't see a speck of litter anywhere. Constant mowing. Everything except a couple of tee pads are in near-perfect condition. There are enough benches and garbage cans. Due to its "short" length and mostly generous fairways, it could be played very quickly.

We literally parked 20' from hole one's tee pad. Makes finding the course inside of the park for the first time super easy.

Cons:

My review is biased by the fact that I'm a Grand Master age Rec skill level player. This course was very nice for me. ADV/PRO level players might ding the course a little for its shorter length and easy (for them) holes. Not every course needs to be a gold level of course and I think everyone would enjoy a round here.

The pars are old-school AM but even so are a little wonky. There is a 211' par 4 but also an uphill 342' par 3. Anyway, enjoy chasing all the birdies and eagles!

After a few recent showers of rain, the course is in pretty good shape. There were a couple of muddy spots but nothing unmanageable. They have put down A LOT of rocks and mulch to combat the erosion and low spots. Might need to still mulch a couple of holes and by the high level of course maintenance here it seems logical it will be done at some point. Still, the course is mostly in the woods with steep climbs, rocky terrain, and exposed root staircases so long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended.

Other Thoughts:

As of this review, this course is the highest-rated course in my county, and I can see why. For Rec/AM/Casuals this course is phenomenal. I will be playing this one a lot!

Well-upkept and beginner friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ A lot of elevation changes.
+ Pars are quite beginner-friendly.
+ Several technical shots required.
+ Good navigation (for the most part).
+ Baskets are in good condition and still seem to catch well.
+ Great upkeep.
+ Plenty of uphill hiking means a good workout.

Cons:

- Disc loss potential on some of the downhill holes, especially the narrow ones if you aren't the kind of person to throw straight.
- Hole 24 finishes behind the baseball stadiums, quite a-ways away from the starting location.
- Slightly awkward navigation from Hole 22 to 23 - it's a sharp left from 22's basket and 23's tee pad is just tucked away slightly in the woods.
- Hole 23 plays right next to a cemetery - be straight or try to throw slightly right.
- Some of the grass on the later holes can get soupy and hold water after it rains. Most of this doesn't interact with the fairways (except for Hole 22) but be mindful of your footing.

Other Thoughts:

Amenities:
- Parking: Plenty.
- Restrooms: There is one kinda near Hole 1 and then another one near the walk from 21 to 22. You may or may not be able to use the one by Hole 1 depending if there's a game going on - it's at a concession stand for one of the baseball stadiums.
- Running water: There is a running water fountain, also near the walk from 21 to 22. There is not one near Hole 1, at least that I saw.
- Benches: A few.
- Trash cans: A decent amount.
- Bag holders: None.
- Tee signs: Pretty basic - just a map with a general line to the hole, par, and distance. Pretty much it.
- Next tee/direction signs: Plenty - mainly on the holes in the woods where you walk a little bit to the next tee pad.
- Wheelchair/cart friendly: No.

Good Hilly wooded course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is well kept, 24 holes, and never gets near pedestrians.
Lot's of good elevation changes
Wooded fairways with clear lines
Good for beginners but challenging enough to be fun for more experienced players.
Good signage for next tees on many holes

Cons:

Pars are definitely off, should be played as a par 3
Some holes feel repetitive (uphill, then downhill, then repeat)
All holes are pretty short, nothing really over 350'
Last 4 holes don't offer much other than to get you back (relatively) close to the parking area.

Other Thoughts:

Overall it's worth a play and I'll be going back. The course provides good lines and rewards speed and angle control. For a 24 hole course it also plays pretty quick and it was thoughtfully designed. Lots of fun!

More Fun at Monroe 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Monroe Community Park is a great par 3, mostly wooded, park course. Playing in the more wooded portion of the park, the course is away from the other park activities, which include a nice playground and a few ball fields.

Every hole, all twenty-four of them, has a concrete tee, a minimalist tee sign (that does the trick on a short course like this), and a silver Chainstar that catches as well as you would expect from an older Chainstar.

The course was in great shape. The fairways were all mowed or cleared, and the rough, while punishing with trees, had clear ground, and I never had trouble finding a disc, even though I was playing solo.

The course is technical, but has a well-defined line on every hole. I never walked onto the tee and wondered what the line was, and I didn't hit an above average number of trees, which is a plus. While distance isn't needed to navigate this course, a solid putter/midrange game is a must. I was throwing a lot of my straight putter shots off the tee.

There were a few cool pin positions that were positioned near a creek, or a drop in elevation, that forced me to be a little more cautious on my putts. All around, the use of elevation on this course was very well done, with uphill, downhill, and flat holes alike.

Cons:

This course isn't championship caliber, but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to play as a more fun place for a less experienced player to learn how to shape lines, and a less challenging place for more experienced players to shoot well.

The Chainstar baskets aren't my favorite, as they don't catch the greatest, and are not super visible through the woods. but it wasn't awful. The concrete tees aren't super large, but that wasn't a huge problem either.

A lot of holes felt pretty similar, and only had one option. a left turning or straight shot with a mid or a putter. This is great for newer players, because it's easier for the average righty to navigate, but for me, a lefty, I was throwing more turnovers and forehands than I wanted to be.

The last few holes were pretty lackluster, wide-open hyzer holes that played pretty close together. Then there's a medium length walk back to the parking lot. I don't think this was all that avoidable due to where the course was heading, and they did the best with what they had.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a lot of fun, and not too far from Cincinnati, so it's a great course in a great area for disc golf. It's not the most challenging, or most aesthetically pleasing, but it's a lot of fun to play, and I plan to be back!

Always a challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course forces you to control your shots, pick your line carefully and execute. If you are off by more than a couple of feet here or there you will not score well. Very tight windows in some areas and with full leaves on the trees very little room for error. This course is hilly due to the layout and it is used well. Uphill and downhill throws. Across the line throws. Several blind throws where you need to be comfortable throwing a disc and knowing where it will land. Several very good ace runs here; I've bounced off the basket on #16 twice now. It's a 24 hole course that is not long so it plays quickly. If you are in the area it is worth a round. Good course.

Cons:

Can be treacherous when damp as the muddy hills are slick. Course holds water and can be swampy even after it hasn't rained on a while. Some hole signage is gone due to vandals. Early holes are uphill which makes it hard to get started at first. Last 4 holes are easy holes and winds up ending the round in a field away from the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Close by and always challenging. I can throw even here and I'm middle-rec. Better throwers score under easily. Amateurs may not like the brush- very thick, very unforgiving.

Monroe Community Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Quality baskets. They have the baskets in really great spots throughout the course. The additional 6 holes can get confusing so make sure you know which basket you are going for.

Tee Pads are in good shape

Clear signs, distances, illustrations on the maps for holes.

Course design is great. Very easy to navigate.

The park is maintained extremely well. There are a couple of the woodless holes where the grass could use a haircut.

Trash Cans and Benches on a lot of the holes or at least nearby.

Cons:

There are no restrooms really close to the course. They are mostly for the baseball fields and other activities around there so just be aware of that.

Course is actually relatively easily because the holes are not too long.

Parking is great to start on hole #1, but its a decent walk back if you play all 24 baskets.

This course can get pretty crowded on the weekends. The couple times I went I saw a lot of newbies out that were slowing down play.

Other Thoughts:

Major Elevation changes at this course. Hole #1 starts you out going straight up, but don't worry there are some good downhill holes as well.

Great variety of hole distances. The elevation changes also help with this.

Challenging Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Concrete tee pads
Easy to navigate
Lets you develop a short game
Plenty of parking
Great workout

Cons:

Very muddy after it rains- wear boots
No practice basket
A few missing tee signs
Some holes very close together-keep your eyes open
A few holes can interact with other park goers
People not using common sense or respect and not throwing away trash despite several trash cans being placed

Other Thoughts:

Monroe had been on my list for a while. I had a Tuesday afternoon off and decided to play. I had the entire course to myself. With the elevation changes, this course will give you a heck of a workout. This is a technical course but you still have a few 300+ft holes you can throw drivers on- even some of the 200-285 holes you might find yourself throwing a driver especially on the uphill holes. Not a course for first timers. You will use many throws- backhand, anhyzer, forehand ect. I imagine this course is tougher in the summer time when everything has grown back. I was very pleased with this course. But since it's over 30 minutes away, it won't be in my regular rotation. But I definitely will be back to play it again!

Cons:

Short, technical, and Fun! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

24 hole course, set in a multi-use park, in Monroe, OH (greater Cincy area). The course loops around the park.

Concrete tee pads, one tee per hole. On this course, these tees were fine, even if a few were starting to show some age.

Chainstar baskets, in decent enough repair. One pin position per hole. I particularly liked some of the basket placements here. Plenty of roll away opportunities, and some nice tucked positions.

Nice use of the terrain and wooded areas here. There's a nice mix of wooded and open areas, and plenty of rolling elevation comes into play, especially early in the round.

Nice, tight, technical lines in the woods. I don't remember any lines that were too tight, but you definitely need to be accurate here.

While most of the course is shorter, there was some variation in distance, which is nice.

Tee signs were adequate, with distance, hole number, and a basic line laid out. Navigation was pretty simple, as well.

Cons:

One tee/pin per hole. There didn't seem to be much space available for more tees, but some more pin positions here would be nice.

This does seem to be a somewhat right-friendly course. Lots of straight, or right to left type holes. It's not that big of a deal, though...lefties are cheaters. Most holes offer one line, and that's about it.

Being this is a shorter course, it's not hard to imagine it gets a ton of traffic during peak times.

Other Thoughts:

Monroe isn't a butt kicking course by any stretch. What it is, is fun. Lots of ace runs and technical shots are found here. Definitely a decent place for all skill levels to have fun throwing frisbees.

While Monroe probably isn't a must play, there's plenty to offer here. If I were close again, I'd probably play it.

Love it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Variety! It's got open holes, open wooded holes, and wooded wooded holes. It's got straight, hyzer, anhyzer, narrow, wide, up, down and all combinations therein.
+ Concrete Tee Pads - which I personally prefer to asphalt, rubber, and grass.
+ Location! Pretty easy to get to, just 5-10 minutes right off I-75.
+ Mostly easy to navigate, with no brainer next holes, and next tee signs pointing you the right way when necessary. If you look closely at the baskets too, some very kind soul took the time to put arrow stickers on many of the poles of the baskets pointing you in the right direction to go on the holes back in the woods. Thanks kind person!
+ 24 holes! That's 29% more than 18!
+ Benches and trash cans liberally placed throughout.

Cons:

- The concrete tee pads are far too narrow and short. Most holes it doesn't matter, because you are not going to come up with your big johnson throw on too many holes anyways. But there are a couple where you just wish the tee pad were bigger. Yes, I realize you can start off the tee pad. But when I compare this to say Lobdell in Columbus with these nice, big, roomy concrete tees, these slightly disappoint.
- Can be crowded! Being a great course, in a great easy to get to location, lots of people come out! Which is great! But I mostly fly solo, and I LOVE getting to a course and it just being me and the course. Greedy, I know. But when I'm at say Gulley bright and early and there's nobody there, it's an awesome thing that I really enjoy. That said, I have yet to run into any group who does not let me through. This is a personal preference, and hardly a real negative, but I mention it in case their are kindred souls.
- On hole 23, if there is a baseball game going, you can overthrow and come close to the crowd.
- Despite liberally placed trashcans, degenerates still discard trash (bottles, etc) whenever said container is dispensed of it's liquid. Seriously, how hard is it to walk it to the next hole that probably has a trash can?

Other Thoughts:

Pictures may not accurately convey the elevation changes here. You are really throwing and walking up and down hills on a couple of holes. And it's quite noticeably more of an effort to navigate than an average course, and I say that as someone who walks a lot. Finally, there are only 4 holes over 300 feet, with the longest being 345. This is a more technical course, and 1 step or small walk ups are in order here. Bring your Putters and Mid Ranges and enjoy - this is a great course!

Monroe DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Monroe DGC is a really nice course that is well designed and has some really technical shots.
1. Tee pads are concrete and are in pretty good shape.
2. Baskets are nice 24 chain and can catch discs very well.
3. course has good flow, very little chance of you losing your way when playing.
The course is a little bit harsh with the way it is built on a side of a hill. A lot of walking up and down the hills makes the body tire out quickly. The course gives you all types of shots that any great course should have. `st hole is a nice uphill hyzer shot that is not distance long but you have to put some power into the shot to get a birdie. 2nd hole is the same way. Not sure if the course has the wrong distances but some of the first holes play a lot longer than what they say. Hole 3 4 and 5 are all nice control shots. I say control because getting into the woods on these holes will leave you with a bogey or a double bogey if playing all par 3's. Hole 5 and 6 play open distance shot. Hole 5 is a best uphill and you have to put a ton of power. 7-9 back in the woods to play some nice control shots and your goal is to try to stay in the fairway. That is all i will tell you for now but all i can say is go play this course. absolutely love this course.

Cons:

Not many cons for this course. When it does rain this course is very slippery and water stays here a long time in the woods. Bring water and snacks for this course if you want to keep your strength up to get under par. Not as easy as it seems.

Other Thoughts:

Overall course is just fun. There are a few things that make this course so enjoyable. First, none of the holes are huge. Do not get me wrong i dont mind airing out a shot for distance but when your in the woods your not going for distance, your going for accuracy. Second the course gives you good open shots and wooded shots. Finally it is a big course with 24 holes. When i disc golf i usually like to play for 5-6 hours and you can do that here. I play this course to work on accuracy of drives. allows you to get better at drives from the pad.

Great for shot shaping and learning lines 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 9, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Just a great fun couse. Easy access of I-75. Great course for beginner and rec players to learn lines and shot shaping and I would believe challenging enough for seasoned players also to keep up on their game. Plenty of uphill and downhill, rights, lefts, s-shots and dead straight in the mix. Clean well defined fairways (instead of the "pinball" type of wooded courses I have played). Nice workout with all the elevation changes and after playing the 24 holes you have had a good day of disc golf. Easy to navigate , only had to look at map twice. hole 15 seems to go straight but you need to turn back toward t-pad and take trail to the right, also t-pad for 23 is up the hill hidden in the woods on left. Otherwise great signs on t's and enough "next T" signs for ease of flow.

Cons:

A little too much trash left on t areas, not enough trash cans, I think i only saw 2. Lots of glass in fairways. Hole 11's t pad gets washed onto very bad and is covered in dirt and gravel making it very slippery. Hole 18 basket is bent from a tree falling onto it.

Other Thoughts:

The rough is rough in most places so errant shots can be costly. Quite a few ace-able holes and plenty of birdie opps. Hole 19 looks too easy but the creek will simply put you OB and cost you a sroke so watch the power and just land short.
Just 2 miles off I-75 so a great course to play when traveling 75, The entrance is on the left off of Cin-Day Rd. (Main Street) and can be tricky to spot. It is at the bottom of the hill and is a large brick and morter marker with a very small "Monroe Community Park " sign on it.

Fun, Hilly Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 9, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, well maintained course with excellent signage! I printed out a map to be on the safe side, but I only used it once or twice, and probably could have figured it out on my own. Tees and baskets are in great shape, courses are all well maintained. Course offers a nice mix or flat, uphill, and downhill holes. Also a nice mix of open and wooded holes. Good variety and playability. Good level of challenge without being off-putting to less experienced players.

Cons:

Baskets are not market with numbers. This isn't an issue through most of the course, but we played the wrong basket on #22, because it looked like basket #24 was our target. Discovered our mistake only by looking at the map after we finished the hole. Not a huge issue, but something to be aware of.

Fair amount of poison ivy off the fairways, so wear pants.

Basket 23 is right behind some bleachers for the baseball diamond, so I might be hesitant to play that hole if a game was going on.

Some of the holes obviously have some water flow during wet seasons, so be aware of how recently it has rained before heading out.

Other Thoughts:

We had a great time playing this course. The mix of up hill, downhill, open, and tight fairways made for a very enjoyable day. The course is well maintained, and it makes for a nice scenic walk through the woods while you enjoy your game. I will definitely be back!

Great use of park edge hills and woods 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

24 decently challenging holes await the recreational to intermediate player in a location midway between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio in the wooded and edge areas of a large park which includes several ball fields, some play equipment, bathroom facilities, and even a log cabin! The beauty of the disc golf course is that it uses the hilly and wooded areas of the park that weren't suitable for the other activities, and seldom crosses paths with them. Even the walking paths that go into the woods are separated from the DG fairways.
The course design starts uphill near the middle of the spacious parking area, coming back down nearby after the 5th and the 9th holes, then goes out around the end of the park, with #20 coming back to the main drive, and the last four holes finishing a short walk away from the original lot. Each segment of the design seems to incorporate uphill and downhill, tightly wooded and open, and shots that shape best left and right. There aren't any real monster length holes here, but the 317' #6 rises between 40 and 50 feet, making it effectively a 450 footer for the bigger arms to wow the rest of us. The shortest hole on the course (the 152' #19) presents its own precision challenge, as the basket is nestled in the bend of the twisty (and often muddy) creek bed that drops a sheer 5' down only a dozen feet from the pin in three directions (I know: it's not a lot, but you don't really want to climb down, or up out of there!)
There has been some clearing of the trees and underbrush here this past year which makes the course more enjoyable for players at my level (Rec/ rookies), but appears to have disappointed some of the more experienced players who liked it a bit more challenging. There are still a dozen fairways that require really good lines to avoid playing lumberjack!
Tee pads a level and concrete, but not overly large. Tee signs are appropriate, and baskets are decent quality.
Monroe is challenging enough to host at least a few tournaments every year, in addition to weekly random draw doubles events.

Cons:

Some of the early, uphill fairways seem to hold on to water a bit too much, and could use some drainage improvements. I've noticed that, after a rain, several of the tee pads can get a little muddy and slick, particularly in the shaded areas.
A couple of the holes (21 & 22) require strong, confident hyzer shots (rhbh) which put the end of the ball fields a bit too much in play if there are families sitting there in the shaded park edge cheering on their kids.

Other Thoughts:

Print a copy of "Course Map II" if it's your first time here, and playing alone. You may not need it, but it does a great job of indicating 'next tee' positions, if you don't spot the signs.
