Begrudgingly Charming 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I am quite thankful to Broadmoor UMC for installing and maintaining this course on their property. It has a certain charm to it that really just grew on me.

The course sits in a little sparsely wooded field behind the main church campus, hole 1 sits in the far corner by the parking lot, and loops around until you get back there, where 9 tees off close by.

The holes are mainly long enough to be accessible for beginners, but short enough to be tempting aces for intermediate players. The reason it's tempting is because a few of the baskets are very close to neighborhood fences, so if you go over, or long, you're trespassing to get your disc back (I do not recommend).

The baskets are powdercoated dark blue, which adds a lot in contrast to the standard gray/silver, and seems to age very well. They were the one thing in the pictures that looked rather unchanged.

Six of the 9 holes are pretty fun. They have their flaws, but this isn't the place for that. What they do offer is a creative engagement with the large park trees, and interesting basket placement. There was some thought that went into this course, and every hole reflects that.

Cons:

The problem is some holes reflect this poorly. Playing very close to a playground, or to the private fences, is passable considering the lack of traffic this area gets. There are three holes where you just kind of can't believe what you are being asked to throw.

Hole 6 throws a narrow gap along a fence behind two buildings (there's another building and a garden with a tarp-covered mound along the immediate forward right that have been added since the pics posted here were taken). Miss right 5 degrees, you hit a building. Left you're in a backyard. High, you're way off or on a roof.

Hole 7 makes a very short dogleg over the corner of a building into the back of another building. My group had two discs land on the roof, two hit an A/C unit, and anyone who does make the bend has to stop soon or hit a window. But stopping soon drags your disc through the road or smacks a curb.

Hole 9 is not as dangerous for the property, but holy moly is it a risky business. The Valkyrie Kid reviewed that hole pretty well. I played it twice and luckily landed dry both times (only because the water was low). If you play the parking lot as in-bounds, you have safe bail-out land, but then the dumpster also comes into play.

Other Thoughts:

Without those three holes, this could be a 2 disc course. I was really on the fence about a 1.5 (Passable) vs the 1.0 (Poor), but in the end those three holes, the danger they incur, are not passable in my book. Even forgiving the playground in play and fairways being very snug to each other, urban disc golf just hasn't found a way to be appealing yet (but I'm all for trying if there's any abandoned warehouses or indoor shopping malls available!)

Again, I always appreciate when a church puts in anything on their property, because really- they don't have to, and I know most churches need some strong convincing to invest in that kind of community project. This was a little charming course, and even the Three Amigos of Horror are holes I won't soon forget!

Is # 9 For Real? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 3, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Broadmoor Presbyterian Church is a large church with many buildings. At the far back of the parking lot is this nice, little wooded park area. The church has their it's own park. The course is squeezed into this small one block square area containing a swing set, benches and a storage building or two.

The pads are natural worn spots and the signs are the old school fiberglass ones. They just have the hole #. The baskets are pretty, dark blue DGA's. # 1 starts right in the corner and is a straight 190' throw down the fence line. Over the chain link fence on the left is a deep ditch. I would think about 50% of all youth group kids end up hysering into the ditch.

The # 2 sign is dead, killed by a falling tree, apparently. I had to turn over the body and verify that this was once # 2. The hole plays maybe 240' down through some trees. There is a fence on your left sans deep Ditch.

The # 6 pad is stuck way back in the farest corner. It plays straight down the fence line to a basket right next to the fence. So many players are going over that fence. # 7 is thus very short little right angle hole where you throw about 40' straight and then a 90 degree right turn to the basket which is only about 20 more feet away. # 8 is about 260' but possibly unplayable with a cars parked in the lot here.

And that brings us to # 9. I can't decide whether this is the most ridiculous hole I've ever seen or a remarkable hole. I'm going with the former, especially considering the players who play here. # 9 is 187' with a fence on your right and the parking lot on the left making the fairway about 35' wide but about 25' of this fairway is taken up with this deep ditch with steep sides and nasty, gunky green water. The basket sits about 3' past the end of the ditch and about 3' in front of a fence. This hole is easily advanced difficulty and the chance of your disc landing somewhere other than the minuscule patch of grass fairway between the ditch and the parking lot is very, very slim. I kinda wanted to throw this hole but instead, made the wise decision to skip it. I know I could hit that landing zone, maybe one out of ten times.

Cons:

Huge chance of throwing over neighboring fences.

# 2 sign crushed. # 2's widow is suing the church for unsafe working conditions.

Course would be almost impossible to play if anyone else was in the park area.

# 9.

Navigation is tricky. It took me a lot of surveying to figure out the layout.

Other Thoughts:

This course might have been better served as a 6 hole course with all the holes around 100'. Hole 9 is not a hole for beginners, It's not a hole for rec players. Intermediate players and above would attempt to play it and probably complain to the high heavens. It's just not a fair or viable hole. The rest of the course is mostly playable. I wouldn't waste my Disc Golf credits playing here.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Broadmoor Church offers a quick round that can supplement more substantial outings at nearby courses like Greenwood Park and LHC. It's an opportunity to play a bit more in a casual setting after a full 18 elsewhere. The course is ripe for safari play and offers enough obstacles to create some interesting shots in the 225' range when doing so, be it a basket shielded by a small copse of trees or lines traveling over swing sets or volleyball nets. Parking is ample. Baskets are legitimate quality and in good shape.

Cons:

The outlines of a structured course are perceivable but hard to follow. Not all tee signs are numbered, legible, or present, and tees themselves can be hard to spot. With so many baskets visible in such a compact space, it's often hard to determine what basket to throw to from a particular tee. This course is really geared for safari at this point owing to the diminishing presence of signage.

Several holes play right up against fences, neighboring yards, buildings, parking, and a nasty-looking creek, maximizing the potential for conflict and lost discs. As beginner-friendly as the course's distance and undaunting obstacles seem to be, this conflict suggests otherwise.

The course is in a very compact space or runs along narrow offshoots thereof. Even a few other people present (such as the couple playing with their dogs when we were there) make it hard to play the course at all. At a busier time than our Saturday at dusk, the course would likely be unplayable.

The holes themselves such as they're discernable are short and straightforward. This is a course for bagging through and through unless you live in the immediate area and want a bit of practice space.

Other Thoughts:

This is worth a stop after playing a more substantial course like LHC just to wind down and net another notch. It's not much beyond that, though.

Short and simple 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Great for skills test/short game
-powder coated baskets
-tee signs

Cons:

-difficult to navigate for newcomers due to close proximity of all baskets and tees.
-multiuser area, so course occasionally unavailable

Other Thoughts:

For the space provided, the course is well laid out. Offers a few fun, novelty holes. It's close to me so I continue to use it for quick spur of the moment rounds or putting practice.

Good place to practice! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Simple, straightforward for the most part. Well done on such a small piece of property. Baskets in good shape. A lot of out of bounds that make you play safe on a short course. #1, 6, & 7 could find your disc OB & possibly non retrievable. Good luck if you're a newbie finding #7. Behind the building w/ a blind shot & mostly concrete OB.

Cons:

Needs to have the course markings updated. For a brand new player like me, if others had not shown up to show me the lay out I might not have figured it out as the "overview" map is unreadable. Sign posts are in a state of disrepair as well. You can barely read the #2 on that sign & it's broken. Details of each hole on signs long since faded or lost.
Not to be rude, but #9 is some kind of masochistic joke. Tried to play it once over the last 2 days & won't bother again until I have "expert" by my name.

Other Thoughts:

Great place to learn the game & practice despite the negatives.

Baskets in a Yard 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 5, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful blue powdercoated DGA Mach 5 baskets, a little bit of shade and trees, and a couple of quirky holes.

Cons:

Really is more of a practice facility than a course, it feels like playing in a big back yard with the neighbors' dogs barking when you get too close to the fence.

Other Thoughts:

It's on such a tiny property that it doesn't really feel like a course at all. It feels more like a skills test course. A couple of baskets are very close to the fence (less than 10 feet I think) on the property line and the dogs on the other side don't seem real friendly---I wouldn't hop the fence if I threw over.

Entertaining shorty... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well designed course for maximum fun in a tiny footprint. I took my wife, who doesn't play much, and she enjoyed it so much we played it twice. Very recommended course for beginners to enjoy without having to throw 300+, yet still still enough challenge, due to trees and odd shaped lines, to keep better players in the fun zone. Very pretty little course, well kept grass, nice old trees.
Very nice baskets that were in perfect condition. Overall this course was fun to play and not too taxing, even for a beginner, ultra-casual player (the wife), or a kid.

Cons:

People at the church did not understand what we were doing and walked into the middle of our shot to gather pecans, we waited a few and then finished. Rather short, might bore some better players. Pavement comes into play a few times, as well as buildings. Surrounded by yards with low fences, so errant shots may find their way over. Slightly confusing layout, easy to play wrong basket if you are not careful.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in Baton Rouge anyway, this was a really fun course. Take a new player or someone learning, they will love it and so will you. :)

Better than it Looks 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Medium Wooded, has good basket placement. Trees and other obstacles that used to be a problem are cut down and/or moved away. A creek, the parking lot, and Residential yards are OB. Not very congested, but great uses of trees. Challenging course for a beginner or Recreational Player.
Hole 9 is long, thin, and straight. If you stray too far to the left, you will have to deal with a mando, OB, and possibly a car. If you stray too far to the right, the disc flies into an unoccupied house. Trees block the view of the basket, and a creek down the middle (about 8 or 9 feet wide) is also OB. The concrete slabs near the basket are not considered OB. This is indeed a challenge to score a deuce, but is certainly possible.

Cons:

It is not very well marked, and for the first time, getting around is confusing. It goes all over the place on the grounds of the church.

IMPORTANT: This course is not always open for playing. Cars are often in the line of danger, and a wayward disc can fly through someone's window. Also, the grounds are the church's and they often use it for their own purposes. Temporary obstacles are often placed in the way. The two buildings mentioned below are home to a Boy Scout troop, so they often have cars, nets, gardens, and even kayaks in the way of throwing. Just remember that this is church grounds, not BREC.

The course utilizes two buildings side by side, and hole 6 and 7 are right behind these. 6 uses small box gardens and currently a large heap of dirt for OB. On the left is a residential yard. 7 is a short, forehand hyzer to the right. Very easy to overthrow and roll into the driveway (OB) or mess up a backhand and fly into someone's yard. Right in front of the teebox, off to the right a little are the building and a A/C unit. They are quite damage resistant (they completely shielded the windows) but a disc is often enough not.
And did I mention the dogs?

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is quite a challenging course. Players who played in 2007 to 2009 should come back and see if they like it more. Plus the fact that it is very close to my house - I live in that neighborhood.

This is a good course for beginners to practice, or Pros to put the icing on their short game.

A Real Paradox 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun, short, church course that will require only your approach discs and/or putter. Shady. Basket placements are the challenge and use the trees well. Also uses a garden and buildings. OB's are residential yards and a gully. Residents were nice about one disc that flew too far. Fine course to work on your technical short game. Not as easy as it looks for a Recreational player. Easy to get around from basket to next tee.

Cons:

That brings us to holes 6, 7, and 9. 6 and 7 are short and utilize a building that many will almost certainly hit. On 6 you must hyzer around a garden and go get your disc in same if you don't throw well. The problem with 7 is that you must annie around the building, with about 8 feet between the bldg and the residential fence, to the basket, or go high and over the roof corner, and you run a risk of scratching up your disc on a cement drive area next to the basket by the church. This brings me to 9, which parallels a parking lot on the left and the gully on the right. The fairway is maybe 12-15 feet wide between the two. So too much left and you scratch up the disc and OB and too much right and you go fishing and OB. The basket placement is difficult. It has blocking trees that make a high hyzer an adventure. 9 is one of the toughest holes I have played anywhere to get a 2, as the distance would indicate.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course in the Fall of 2007, so maybe things have changed. It is fun, but bring some old discs. I think it is great that the church offers this. Beginners my want to do 1-6 and 8 for a while.Without more land I think the church folks have done a fine job with what they have. I will play this again
