Unplayable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

No crowds

Cons:

No readable signage, impossible to find tees or know where to throw from. I did find two baskets, but couldn't find next tee (or basket) from either one.

Other Thoughts:

I assume there was better signage at some point, due to positive reviews, but the day I was there, I could not see any indication of tee locations or basket numbers, so the course was unplayable IMO. As of June 2, this is not a disc golf course, it is just a bunch baskets located amongst the juniper trees. Luckily, sipapu is only 5 miles away, and it is an excellent course that is fairly easy to follow, even without a map.

Excellent course but might need a guide 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful course hidden away in the mountains of Santa Fe. Amazing views of mountains around you. I happen to visit at a time it was almost 70°F yet there were still psyched of snow in shady spots. Now the pros...

-amazing view and scenery
-lots of elevation change coming into play
-27 holes
-long and short tees
-awesome signature hole with 400ft down hill shot
-cool benches and structures here and there using surrounding vegetation
-variety of shots and distances
-Lots of hiking

Cons:

Not the easiest to navigate, lucky my friend and I ran into two locals at the start of the round. Played doubles and won by a stroke, heck of a match came down to the end. But I wouldn't have found the end without local guides. Other cons...

-lots of small cacti
-signage not the worst but could be better. There are arrows at pins pointing to next tee but still tricky at times
-good amount of blind shots so have a spotter or two (Not so much a con but just a heads up, elevation and low shrubs can swallow your disc)
-windy most of the time I heard

Other Thoughts:

This is honestly my favorite course that I have played as an intermediate golfer. Other than signage at times, course flows nicely. Having a guide I didn't have to worry about getting lost so I enjoyed a great round with amazing scenery. Trees are mostly all under 15ft and carve a lot of nice holes and tricky lines. However, a lot of pins can be reached with overhand throws because the trees are small. I would disallow overhand on a bunch of holes that have defined fairways cut from the trees. Highly recommend this course if you like hiking and mountain views and a nice mix of holes. Would be 5 stars if easier to navigate.

Picuris Pueblo is a Pleaser 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played Picuris Pueblo DGC on a perfect early October afternoon. Sunny and not to hot outside, with a bit of a breeze. The 27 hole course was pretty well marked, with natural tees that have signs at the long positions, and good baskets that are marked to point out the direction of the next box. Terrain is dessert with plenty of evergreen trees that will create obstacles if you miss the line, and elevation changes that make it more fun and interesting. Most of the holes are par 3, and distance varies nicely, giving you chances for birdies, but requiring accuracy to get those opportunities. The longer holes usually give you room to air it out over the tree tops, but winds can be tricky and may push you off line. There are 16 holes on the front half of the course, and 11 more on the back side. Placed in a secluded area where it is extremely unlikely you will see anyone who is not there to disc golf.

Cons:

There was some confusion on my scorecard, because the newer holes on the front half are inserted in the middle of the original 9, and some of the tees have 2 sets of numbers. We skipped the newer holes, after playing 2 other courses that morning and afternoon, arm was getting weary and daylight was running out. The map I printed only shows the original 20 holes. I was glad to have a guide that was familiar with the course. Keep an eye on the drives, trees and underbrush can hide a disc that lands out of the way. There are lots of trees, but in hot weather finding shade might be tough. It is kind of a long distance from the front half to the back, but you can drive to the other side and park there.

Other Thoughts:

I played Sipapu before this round, where I met Clay, who suggested we check out Picuris Pueblo afterward. I'm glad that he did, it is an excellent course. Big thanks to him for showing me around. I wish I had enough time to play the entire course, but what I experienced was enough to make me a fan. If you have a chance, make the trip because the courses are fun and the scenery is quite beautiful.

Beautiful, long course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Awesome course with 27 holes! #1-16 are on one side of the road and the last 11 are on the other. Great shot variety. Hanging tees and a couple crazy mountain shots. The yellow signs helped us find every tee with no problem. Beautiful views on every hole.

Cons:

There werent any maps available when i played. Lots of low trees in the fairway make it kind of hard to find discs.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course has changed since the last couple people reviewed it. I played 27 numbered holes, all with nice tees and signs. It would have been impossible to navigate if not for the yellow signs and orange tape telling you where to go. Great exercise from walking all over the hills in the snow. Had alot of fun with the whole family on christmas day. Two Gray Hares is very close and is also very fun.

Play with someone who knows the course!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 13, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Beautiful Mountain setting in desert short pines and sage.
-This course is on the Picuris Pueblo: it just FEELS outback and special.
-Great variety: Demanding shots & tough choices.
-Cool features: hanging and raised baskets. Lean-to benches, paths, stone totems etc. '

Cons:

THESE ARE MORE 'TIPS' THAN 'CONS':
-A real scramblers course. No grassy fairways!
-THere is signage but can be hard to get around.
-Watch your discs! You often can't see your drives land.
-Hard to get a clean look or an easy stance.
-Some of the sand or dirt tee-pads are uneven.
-Some very tough outs if your lie is inside the trees.

Other Thoughts:

PLEASE NOTE: I am updating this review due to the confusion that a certain 1/2 star review may be causing. This course is NOT 'unplayable' LOL. Both an Ice Bowl and a B Tier round are played there. Yes, it helps if you play with locals as nearly every review has stated. But if you MUST play it blind, the original 20 holes have a well worn path. The front 9 holes are clockwise from the parking area. The back 11 holes re clockwise just across the street. There are 10" round, gold directional signs in most places where you need them but you will have to do some searching for several holes.

Instead, try ANY of the following to hook up:
-Winter league is from about November-April on Saturday at 11am.
-Hook up on the NMDG or NNMDG or SFDG Facebook groups.
-Ask about playing Picuris at Sipapu's leagues from early May to late October. Thursday Dubs at 5pm. Saturday Singles at 10am.
-Play the Rio Pueblo Tournament in the spring. There are also more chances to find people playing in the days leading up to the tournament.

MAIN REVIEW RESUMES HERE: There are several layouts but the 'Original 20' is the main route.
-The 7 holes added to the west after hole 3 are not played much anymore. Since tee-signs are for BOTH layouts, hole 4/11 is the fourth hole on the 'original 20' and the 11th on the 27 hole layout. This is confusing but you get the hang of it pretty quick.
-Even those round, gold directional signs won't help you around the 'Phantom Course'. It has newer black tee signs but you will need a local to play it.
Weather for the Saturday Winter league at 11am is surprisingly good with many sunny cool days and even some dry terrain days too.
-The best way to find the course is to head west from Penasco. In about a mile, you will pass a store and a liquor store on the right. Take the next right into the Pueblo. The course parking is the first left, after a cattle grate. The course starts there and the last 11 holes are across the road.
-Bring water, be patient, watch your discs. Enjoy.
This is a special course with many unique features.

Very fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very fun and challenging. I am very thankful that the people of Picuris Pueblo opened up their land for all of us to enjoy. Great course to air it out. Close proximity to Sipapu allows you to play two completely different courses in the same day. Very cool locals.

Cons:

I could see it to be hard to navigate for a first timer.

Other Thoughts:

It is amazing that this course, along with Sipapu and Two Grey Hares are so close together. Make a weekend out of it and camp and play some amazing NM mountain golf!

Beautiful Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging course for sure. Plays very long. Large Variety of hole types here. Hyzer, turnover, long, uphill, and downhill. Unique High Desert landscape gives breathtaking views and adds some interesting obstacles on every hole.

Cons:

Course is not well marked in my opinion. Only markings available were an arrow near each basket pointing towards next tee. Baskets needed more marking themselves. Tough to pick up an all grey metal basket among the brush.

The only saving grace was that I was there on a saturday when the locals have their friendly league play, without them I would have been lost.

All of the low brush can make it tough to find discs and also presents a problem for run-ups on second shots.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 6 sticks in my memory as the signature hole. Huge downhill shot with lots of trouble to the left and O.B. Road behind basket if you go long. Back nine plays really long.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 23, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful solitude. Clean air, everything I love about being in New Mexico. Not a lot of traffic the day I was out there. Nice use of elevation when available. I can't remember which hole, but one on the front nine is a great down hill shot with the pueblo in the background and much potential for tragedy along the way. On the back nine, I remember some nice use of uphill elevation as well. Most of the course plays fairly long with great views. Not too many ace runs, but not wide open either.

Cons:

Little tough to find some holes, but not too bad. I was by myself from out of state with no guide, and I only wasted time on a few holes trying to figure out where to go. Good direction to next tee box, though, usually. Also, I don't remember any close stores to buy your golfing refreshments nearby, so stock up in town before you head out. On a summer day I could imagine water being a problem.

Other Thoughts:

I would really recommend this course to anyone in the area. I stopped by Two Grey Hares, and the folks were very nice, but I only had time for one course that day, and their facility looked much more wide open that did Picuris. Therefore, I can't truly compare the two, but I was happy with my choice. Both courses could easily be played in a full day of golf, though.
