Great course, one of Mexico's best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- the course is now a full 18 baskets (at the time of the original course review from early 2009, it was just 9)

- the views are stunning; especially from the 3rd tee, when you've got a sweeping view of a 6,000 foot mountain range

- fairly intuitive to find your way along the course; maps of each hole near the tee are pretty reliable

- the baskets are still moved from time to time to keep the course layout fresh

Cons:

- course can get brutally hot during the day in summer; you want to play in the early morning or at dusk if at all possible; fall, winter, spring, conditions are pretty much okay anytime

- you need to watch out on the weekends; this is a heavily used park on those days, and no pedestrian minding their own business wants to get clocked in the head; between the tee and basket on a lot of the holes, there are heavily-used walking paths

Other Thoughts:

- this is a great course. I live in Monterrey, so I play it a lot. It's also probably the only course for a 100+ miles in any direction

- there obviously aren't many courses in Mexico, and this one is the country's first; if for whatever reason you find yourself in Monterrey, set aside a morning and afternoon and make the trip; the course is in Rufino Tamayo, a nice park in the Monterrey suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia, less than 10 minutes from downtown

- there is a good amount of parking right near the first tee

Tricky, Tricky Rufino 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 10, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This park was made for Disc Golf. Seriously. There is no other way to describe it. Lots of terrain, with trees scattered everywhere. Terraced areas with rock walls, even a (admittedly dry) creek to shoot over.

Despite having only 8 baskets, the varied terrain and varied challenges make every hole feel very different. It has a nice variety of long and short, and hyzers. Also, the creek and paths are OB, which makes it easy to get penalty strokes if you're not careful.
Challenging and fun, plus since the baskets are temporary, pin position can change week to week, for constant fresh wrinkles on each hole.

Very few wide open shots, or even wide fairway shots. Get ready to flex discs around and through trees in every way!

Cons:

One of the main cons is that the baskets are temporary affairs only set up on Sunday Mornings.

I would love to play this course during the week. Also, the limited number of baskets does limit the possibilities of shots on this course. If it were expanded to even 9 permanent baskets, this course could easily be a 4, since the terrain alone is just so sweet.

If they set up 18 holes with tee boxes playing to 9 permanent baskets, this course would go from good to great in a heartbeat, and do wonders for Disc Golf in Mexico.

Other Thoughts:

The homemade baskets only have a single row of chains, but according to the regulars, discs rarely blow through.

It is unfortunate that disc golf does not seem to have caught on much in Mexico yet. It is so inexpensive, it could be huge. This is a beautiful country, that would no doubt be able to field many amazing wooded, mountainous, and/or desert courses. DG courses in resort towns like Cancun and Los Cabos may be closer than it seems. After all, many college students play disc golf, and many also vacation in Mexico. Pay-to-play, anyone?

This course is the seed. Personally, I am excited to see what it germinates into for the sport in this country!! If you are in Monterrey, stop in on a Sunday morning and play a round with the group here. I promise you won't regret it.
