Nondescript park nine. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course located in mostly open fields in Bakerview Park, in Mount Vernon.

DiscNation Liberty baskets, which are probably good enough for this course. Mounted well, but starting to show some wear. One pin position per hole. These are certainly not my favorite baskets, but that's solely personal preference.

Concrete tee pads on each hole. Big(ish) circular tees, which I don't hate. They're not especially huge, but they were level around the tees, so extra runup wasn't an issue. I kind of wish more courses would incorporate these types of tees. One tee per hole.

What few obstacles are in this area of the park were mostly used. A few scattered trees, a scoreboard, the very slight hillside...decently done with what little was available.

Navigation was fine...the tees had hole numbers on them, and the flow was decent enough. A little bit of figuring out was needed in the middle, but not a big deal. Baskets are numbered.

Cons:

So on a full weekend of bagging after decent rains, most of the courses in the area had some mud going on...but nothing like this place. It was literally like walking on a fully soaked muddy sponge. Simply walking this course left mud splatters halfway up my legs...I've never quite experienced anything like it.

Most of the holes are pretty short and pretty open. There's just not a lot of mystery here.

Other Thoughts:

There's a whole lot of "meh" going on here. If you imagine the typical open field shortish park nine hole course, this is what you imagine.

If you're a bagger, you'll play it. If you live super close, you'll probably play it. If you're anything else, you probably won't bother.

Winding your way down on Bakerview 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

For being a pretty small park, this is solid design. The trees are used well, and several of the holes have multiple lanes to the basket. Hole 2 has an outfield scoreboard you need to negotiate if you are throwing a really wide hyzer. Holes 3-9 all have trees somewhere near the basket.

Holes are mostly in the 200-300 range (maybe all of them are), so there are a lot of birdie opportunities. I think I got 5.
Navigation wasn't bad since I was mostly following other players, but the park is small enough that you can probably figure it out.

The Cascades are in the background, so this was a pretty place to play at sunset.

Cons:

The concrete pads are all circular for some reason and aren't quite long enough for a full run up.

There isn't a ton of length here.

Other park users could come into play, although the course does not have any unsafe features design-wise. A pretty bad throw could end up in the baseball fields or on the road.

Other Thoughts:

I was in town to visit North Cascades National Park. I'm surprised how many people there were on a weeknight for a small town. There is clearly support behind this course.

Fun little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 24, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Short 9 hole course loop, located in local park. nice variety of long and short holes, a few shots with trees to add difficulty. well-maintained. new baskets. new teepads coming soon. impossible to lose a disc. redesign of course is so much better (mostly an expansion on holes 5-9).

Cons:

Some holes are a little repetitive, not a lot of difficult shots. no real obstacles. Can sometimes have other park goers on the course with the volley ball and baseball diamonds. if it has rained a lot recently the grass does not drain well and creates a swampy course, BRING WATERPROOF SHOES!

Other Thoughts:

The new baskets are great. It does not dry out until about May.
A fun course, great for practice. Also great for new players and kids. easy to play safari disc golf at. when the new teepads come in it will be great and will help when it rains to prevent slipping after teeing off. The park has some small hills and light elevation, most trees are right around baskets.

Local, introductory course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 8, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Real baskets! Bakerview has been upgraded with real baskets, the 4x4 posts a thing of the past. Bakerview is handy for the locals and easy for kids or beginners. 2016 UPDATE: Concrete tees have been installed. They're funny, round ones, but each has its number and direction to basket stenciled on it. Baskets are also numbered now. If you have a friend or a kid who can toss a Frisbee, this is a beginner-friendly place to introduce him/her to disc golf.

Cons:

Wet. Downright soggy in winter, even several days after the last rain. Seriously consider wearing boots until Summer is in full swing. On summer evenings you may be playing though picnics. The first two holes closely parallel the outfield fences of two baseball fields - easy to find yourself in the wrong game. 4th tee is invisible from 3rd basket: go out to the sidewalk and backtrack a little.

Other Thoughts:

If Skagit County was thick with excellent disc golf courses, this one could fade away, but that's not the case. Locals need a place to play, and this one is within easy bicycling distance for a lot of kids and adults. If you're on a road trip on Interstate 5 and due for a break, pull off at the College Way exit, grab some grub, and scoot east a couple of miles for a picnic and a quick fix for your disc golfing habit.
When you have the time and the arm for something more serious, NSRA is just a dozen miles or so away, east of Sedro Woolley.

I guess if I lived here... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 23, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

When I first played here (and wrote a review), it was a fun little pole course. The flow was simple, it was a great course to introduce beginners, and the 9 post was right by the tee for 1. There was a lot of potential here and it was a great community disc golf course (albeit too easy for most).

Fast forward to today. They've done a redesign, done away with the poles, and brought in real baskets. The redesign is the biggest pro. Gone are the stupidly easy holes like number 5, which was about 80' and downhill. It was fun to play just for the laughs, but that was about it. Now they've lengthened the course and made it more enjoyable for anyone better than a rec level player.

Cons:

Unfortunately, the redesign is incomplete and this really cripples the course. I'll gladly raise my rating when they're done, but as it is now it's nearly unplayable. On this site it states that the course is "well marked". This statement is outdated. The old layout was well marked. The new one isn't marked at all. Some of the baskets have number plates, but the majority of them are blank. The only markings are tape on each basket that points to absolutely nothing. Add in the fact that this site doesn't even have a map available, and you wind up having a bunch of baskets randomly strewn throughout a field.

Other Thoughts:

This course still has potential. It will never be anything like it's big brother up the street in Sedro Woolley, but it will be a great place for mid and putter practice as well as a place to introduce new players. And of course you can warm up here on your way to Sedro. It's also a good place to stretch your legs between Seattle and points north. But as it stands now, it's only a safari course. That's great for local players, but as a destination it falls far short.

There is hope 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

No chance of losing a disc here. If you're tired of digging your discs out of the blackberry bushes in Sedro Woolley, come here to practice your short game. The course makes decent use of natural obstacles to add some interest. Can also be a good spot to do some safari golfing (ie. make up your own tee off locations) since there aren't any tee pads anyway. Also, nice place to see if you can get that illusive Ace.

Cons:

No tee pads and posts instead of baskets.

Other Thoughts:

Rumor has it that baskets and tee pads are in the works. Hope to see some upgrades as well as a better layout by end of the year.

Pros:

This is a family friendly and fun little course. Great use of some extra space. The fairways are clean and grassy, with no underbrush, with some trees and stumps for obstacles.

Cons:

As others have stated, there are no tee boxes, and no baskets, only posts. It is short, and can be played rather quickly.

Other Thoughts:

If you are looking for a standard DGC, this is not the place for you. If you want to get some "pitch and putt" in, and have some fun, then this is a great place to do it!

Short and Sweet? 2+ years drive by

Pros:

- ACE RUNS!
- Interesting pin placements
- Well maintained park
- Good place for beginners

Cons:

- No baskets, only wooden posts
- No teepads
- Not very challenging

Other Thoughts:

Bakerview Park Disc Golf Course doesn't really have a whole lot to write home about. 10 posts make up the course as they double as both teepads and targets. All except two holes are under 250ft and require minimal line shaping to shoot well. It is a fun place to take some psuedo ace runs, yet, hitting a post just isn't as cool as smashing chains from the tee pad.

If you are looking for a serious round of disc golf, this is not the place. There is fun to be had if you are introducing a beginner to the game or playing a (very) casual round with a goofy bunch, but in order for this course to get rated higher it would need a complete overhaul. It is worth the experience once if you are in the area and must play disc golf. Otherwise I would skip it.

Passable 9 hole now 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice Park, well maintained. Course easy to follow. Designers make ok use terrain and trees.
2018 update: this is one of my 1st reviews, the course and I have both got better. :)
This fairly typical 9 hole park course is in a well appointed scenic course in eastern Mt Vernon. Since I originally played it they have added Baskets and med sized round concrete tee pads. Neither are top of the line but both serve their purpose. While short the designers have made pretty good use of what few trees and elevation there are to add a little difficulty and give you some different looks. 5-8 are the best.

Cons:

Very short, no tees or baskets. Wet grass sux to tee off from.
2018 update: it is still pretty short, but I have played worse. A coule holes are close together so an errant throw can endanger other fairways or tees. 1(especially) and 9 play close to a baseball field and volley ball court respectively so it is rather easy to throw close to non players involved in their own games.

Other Thoughts:

My Mom lives in Skagit Valley, and I will go practice in a field and pick random trees to throw at rather than drive here. Good example of what you can do with limited money and space @ a local park but if I'm going to drive I'll go to Sedro Woolley.
2018 Update: still not a destination course but a reasonable local course, met a couple people that learned there in last 2 years and they are throwing well and enjoying the sport. You can ask for more but it is filling it's niche well. It sounds like Sedro Wolley course is better maintained so that is your Skagit Valley destination course but this one is nice to hit on a pleasant evening. Fortunately my Mom now lives 5 min by bike from here, i will be playing it more often. :)

I want more post courses! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great layout and variety of holes here! It's the 1st pole course I've played since I've been spoiled by the 4 great courses near my home. Since I was just down the road and needed to kill some time, I took the 2 mile detour to check this course out and I'm glad I did. Beginning and ending with par 4s, with a nice, tricky par 3s and a short par 2 in the middle, I liked the course so much I went another round right away. Why complain about no teepads and baskets? You'd only get maybe 3 holes max in this amount of space - the only thing you're missing is being able to throw a 300ft bomb... Taken for what it is, essentially the approach and putt part of DG, it was a great little course. If you click the link for the local club, you'll also find an alternate course listed, but if you're out there alone you can really choose to throw at any post from anywhere you'd like and have dozens of choices. You could start at #1 (or #9 or #2) and throw to, then back from, each of the posts and have a nice 18 - there are so many options with this course!

Cons:

This course isn't close to where I live! I'd love to work on my short game on a course like this if I could. I can see problem if there's ball games going on nearby, or a family reunion taking place on #9, but sometimes you gotta share...

Other Thoughts:

It's a shame there's so many who bad-mouth little courses like this, especially since there are 1000s of parks out there that are capable of hosting a course like this, compared to a small percentage that could accommodate a basket course. Also, for the cost of ONE basket and teepad you can put 18 posts in the ground in just about any moderately sized park ( or 9 in two different small parks). I'd love to see alot more DG courses out there, of any size, and if more were willing to accept posts, you probably would have them. I'm inspired now! I may have to get proactive and try and get a course going around here....

Fun but short 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This DGC is in a very clean park in a very nice area. Finding the next hole is easy and fast. Not crowded at all.

Cons:

First off it doesn't have baskets which is a drag. Some of the holes have good length, about 200-250 feet or so but most of them are around 50 feet, yes feet not yards.

Other Thoughts:

In a quiet area with lots of parking and in a wonderful park but your throwing at wood posts. It has too many holes that are really, really short and it's not far from the course in Sedro Wooley, so I would recommend going there instead, but if you want to get the whole family out and play this is a easy walk for everyone and the park is in great shape.

Pros:

Course was easy to follow, once you found the first hole. Not crowded today (of course it was a Tuesday in May around 1pm). NO chance of losing any plastic.

Cons:

Short, post hole course. If you have nothing else to do and wanna practice your pitch and putt stuff for 20-30 minutes, worth stopping by, I suppose.

Other Thoughts:

As I am currently trying to work my way through all the Washington state courses, felt I should stop by and play a round, and it was quick and painless, at least. The course isn't as short as it appears from looking at the printed out scorecard. It shows hole distances in YARDS and not feet, so if you are expecting a 29 foot hole, its not quite as bad as you might have first thought. I updated the hole distances on this site with the correct distances, in feet.

Bakerview Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located in a beautiful city of Mount Vernon, this multi-use park has plenty to do including multiple baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, and BBQ pits which are perfect for picnicing. Bakerview Park offers easily accessable bathrooms, parking, and plenty of grass to lay out on.

Bakerview Park DGC offers a 9 hole object course that is easy to follow, and allows you to start and end near the parking lot. The posts are labeled including distance which is nice when wanting to knonw how far you will need to throw your putter!!! The course is perfect for children and novice players, or.....someone who wants to get some short range practice while waiting for their child to finish up little league practice at the ballpark.

Cons:

There were several things I had issues with on this course starting with the fact that hole 9's post was lying on the ground rather then being stuck in the ground. Being that it is a multi-use park, the course is almost impossible to play all the way through in spring and summer because of all the other sports that are played here (including all those who are lying out or having a picnic). The DGC has no distinct teepads and most of the holes range anywhere from 40 feet (about 5 of the holes) to just about 200 feet (2) leaving the other 2 somewhere in between with very few obstacles along the way.

I appreciate the effort that went in to this course but feel a redesign of this nine hole course including baskets and "official" teepads would truely help this course.

Other Thoughts:

Rather than waste your time here I would highly recommend skipping it, and go play NSRA DGC in Sedro Wooley or Mossy Roc DGC in Bellingham just 20 minutes away. Both of those courses are much more challenging, and truely give you a taste of what NW DGing is all about!

I have heard that there could possibly be a redesign of this course in the making, including teepads and baskets but due to this sinking economy those plans were put on hold. I do hope that they pick up where they left off so that the city of Mount Vernon as well as all traveling DGers could benefit from it. Only time will tell I guess. For now I would just keep your head down and keep driving past Mount Vernon to play some real disc golf.

Bring On The Baskets! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a nice, clean, little city park with volleyball courts, ballfields and soccer fields. The section where the course is slightly away from other activities. There is enough room here to squeeze in a 9 basket pitch and putt course. Instead, there is a miniscule pole hole course with holes ranging from 60 to maybe 200 feet. The signs on the poles give the distance in yards. For you math majors, multiply by three to get the normally accepted disc golf distances in feet. You can play a round in under 15 minutes but who would really care to.

Cons:

There are no baskets. There are no tee pads. There are almost certainly no players.

Other Thoughts:

Notice to Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department officials. Spring for some baskets. Rough out some basic teepads and you would have a decent little 9 hole pitch and putt here.
