Open up and let it rip!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Parking available by the course
- Wide open, not too much hazard in play
- Plenty of distance required.
- Not too busy
- Navigation is simple
- Concrete pads and tee signs for each hole

Cons:

- Not a whole lot of challenge unless you play with long grass OB.
- Not a whole lot of risk/reward.

Other Thoughts:

The two rounds I played this course at were a tournament where the long grass was OB. This brought some teeth to the course. Playing the course straight up, the only challenge is distance. If I was in the area I would play it again for fun, but not a must-go by any means.

Wide Open...that's about it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good Teepads, they are wider at the front which seems weird but makes more sense.
Good Tee Signs
Fairways are very generous

Cons:

First eleven holes play the exact same, throw as far as you can once or twice, throw a long upshot, putt.
Holes on the back 9 may be unplayable during events or busy times.
Tall prairie grass to lose discs in (but like I said the fairways are generously wide so you really messed up if you ended in the tall grass)

Other Thoughts:

Course offers little challenge besides distance, the couple holes along the back nine are the only variety but its too little to late.

Too long for beginners to enjoy, Too simple for intermediate and up.

Pros:

Very well kept course. Nice long open holes. The pars are reasonable for the course difficulty. Never very busy and you won't get stuck behind others playing. Easy to get from hole to hole with no confusion.

Cons:

Can be hard to find discs in the tall grass on the side of some holes.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun course that I usually play when in the area.

Best Maintained Course in the Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

One of the only 18 hole courses around and probably the best maintained course in the area. It has a dedicated parking lot and is right on the campus of UWBC, WITC which means water and vending machines are close by.

The course it self is the longest one I've played, has a variety of par 3's and 4's and a few shorter 5's. The front 9 ends right back at the parking lot and plays relatively quickly. Over all it feels quite fair and as you begin throwing farther it becomes a very fun course for a beginner.

For the most part there is good signage and plenty of trash bins around.

UPDATE 6/11/2017: There have been a few positive changes in the past few years that have opened my eyes to this course. First, they added cement tee pads. They're small but most of them are low enough that a step up run up is quite easy.

The WIND is a big factor that makes the course more interesting that I had first understood. Both the front and back 9 play in a loop and a constant wind come from the west means you'll be challenging it from all directions on different holes. Stable plastic is a must but understable discs will see just as much love.

They've also added a new hole 18 after 12 was removed due to construction. It gets you back just a little closer to the start of the course which is good, and in it self is a very interesting holes. Lot's of different lines to take, none of them direct.

Cons:

The front 9 is flat and WIDE open and almost consistently windy. If you didn't pack any stable plastic, you're in for a rough round.

The back 9 has much more variety due to changing elevations on a few of the holes and makes it a lot more fun. However one of the holes on the back runs along the baseball fields, which are in use quite often while the season is active. Also a bear showed up once... so there's that.

The back 9 ends a quarter mile away from the front of the course so you have to take a long walk to get back to your vehicle.

Finding 16 from 15's pin is a bit difficult. Walk toward the closest brick building, keeping it's facing wall to your right and the pad will be just past the corner.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun, but kind of forgiving course. The front nine in particularly is very strait forward, with only one or two holes that really require any thought to your drive. Most of the pars feel like they are gracious for the distances but it makes the course much easier for beginners. As a beginner myself it's fun to see my first rounds at 14 over drop down to even now after learning substantially more about the game. There is unfortunately just very little challenge to most of the holes other than "throw it far to get better than par". Technical players will find the course woefully lacking and distance throwers will be easily bored. Beginners will get the most out of this one.

If you play everything as a Par 3, the course really opens up in terms of challenge and enjoyment. Now most holes require a difficult, but not impossible park job to play under par and there are still getable holes for the 250 and under players.

Wide open - Grip it and rip it! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Location is wonderful for this area up here. Easy to find, easy to park. Looking around the campus when you show up, you will most likely feel like the course will be a let down, but it is full of hidden surprises. I cannot think of any course that does so much with so little. Every tree, elevation change, fence, etc. is strategically used in relation to the basket placement. Most of the holes are unique to each other which is a true testament to the quality of design of the course. The course is not difficult, so it is great to boost the morale!

Cons:

Can be crowded, and there are usually other people milling around that are not there for disc golf. This has rarely been an issue, but would be if you were there during a baseball game or campus event. The course is not difficult. Hole 18 is a decent distant away from hole 1, so be prepared for a hike back to the car. There are no food/beverage options.

Other Thoughts:

Rice Lake is easily the most populated town within 60 miles of any of the other courses and actually has restaurants/gas stations that are not far away from your location. If you are looking for a "location friendly" course in NW Wisconsin; this is the one for you. This is one of my personal favorite courses.

UW-BC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 hole layout
Maps on all the tees
Nice use of the property it's built on
Easy to find
Generally not crowded

Cons:

Tee boxes are in bad shape
Windy
Parking

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun, fairly quick 18 hole course. The layout allows for two nines to be played, with the ninth basket near the parking area. Unfortunately, the 18th basket is a ways from the parking area, making for a decent walk back.
The course is pretty flat, but the design plays around/through the trees and tall grass in the area. There are some smaller hills that come into play for the last few holes, one with a blind uphill shot at the basket.
The layout does play through some trees and rough, but it's pretty wide open for the most part. The wind can be, and usually is, pretty bad out here. The layout also plays around some of the baseball fields, near some roads, and a hole near the water. These all add some nice OB possibilities, though the tee signs don't list any OB.
There's a nice mix of long, short, left, and right holes but since it's fairly wide open, it's hard to have a bad shot unless OB is in play. The course plays pretty quick, so it's nice for some fast rounds.
This course is good for beginners but can be made more challenging by playing the OBs. With the convenience of the course location, enjoyable layout, and relative ease of play, this course has a decent replay value. Combined with the courses in Cameron, Chetek, and Barron, this course adds to a nice day of disc golf.

Throwing for a 2 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 17, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course is easy to follow, signs point to next tee
Close Parking
Course Sign Board for posting events
Garbage Cans

Cons:

A few of the tees are eroding badly, causing rocks and ruts.
No OB is marked or played.
Baseball parents feel the need to park on hole 15, ignoring the parking lot above.

Other Thoughts:

People say this course is easy, but I see them not playing tall grass as OB, nor as the baseball field as OB, as it isn't marked anywhere.
If the course designer or maintainer would update the signs to reflect OB, it would make the course a bit better.

The wind is a major variable here, sometimes it is ridiculously windy and hard to control your disc.

I would up the rating if the tees were fixed, and OB was marked on signs.

I have gotten a 2 on every hole here, so imo, the distances are about right for the obstacles.

Nice long course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 6, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is wide open and long for the most part but there are some respectable obstacles on many holes. The holes are as interesting as they can be considering the setting. There is a great mix of par 3s, 4s and 5s, so you'll use a lot of different discs and different shots. Good shots are rewarded. It's rarely crowded. Hard to loose discs for the most part. Great for beginners. Easy to post a low score. Next tee box is always easy to find. The front nine offers a great warm up before a more varied, semi-technical back nine. Small parking lot added recently.

Cons:

Wind can be a beast. Openness of first 11 holes can get old.

Other Thoughts:

Favorite holes 6, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18. Overall the best course in the Barron County area, but Chetek, Barron and Spooner High Schools and Reeve offer fun courses too.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well as a beginner I believe this course to be great for those who are just starting off. With all of the different styles of holes you really get to try and learn new things, and that really helped me develop my form, that includes my run up, mid range play, hyzer shots, approaches, and putts.

Cons:

I will say that it would be nice to have a little better tee-pads, seeing as they are just the natural ground/dirt they are very worn in and really unforgiving, and if it rains you will either have to play on the side or go threw a pretty decent mud puddle.

Also some of the wholes on the back nine are really close to baseball fields, and on some days they will be very packed, and with a little wind players can lose there disc into the fields, and that's not to much fun when a game is going on -_-.

Other Thoughts:

All, and all this course is fun, and I would recommend it if your in the area.

Wide open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays around large flat fields on a college campus with a few scattered trees. There is lots of length here, so you can open up and throw some long drives. A small hill comes into play on a couple holes, and it's used well to add a different challenge throwing up the hill then along the top. Many holes at least have some late trouble with the pin tucked behind a tree.

There are basic tee signs with hole distance and layout, and the flow of the course is pretty good so we had no issues following it. The baskets were in good shape and caught well. The grounds were well maintained, with recently mowed grass and no trash or vandalism. The course mostly stays away from other campus activities, so it should be playable most of the time.

Cons:

With almost every hole long and open with no real trouble, this course gets pretty boring. Only a few holes are at all interesting, and they aren't enough to make up for the rest. The only real hazard on several holes is long grass if you throw way off line, and I'm not a fan of hazards that don't cost you a stroke and instead cost you time and possible plastic.

A couple holes in the middle of the course (I think 9 and 11) have crossing fairways which could be a safety issue if the course gets crowded. There is plenty of room here, I have no idea why the designer laid out these two holes this way. The tees are natural and many were rutted out making for poor tee surfaces.

Other Thoughts:

I love seeing disc golf on college campuses, it's a great exposure point for the sport. Unfortunately, this one doesn't give a very good first impression to students trying out the sport. Experienced players will find it boring and not really a test of anything but distance. Newer players will find the length frustrating, and won't need to learn different shot shapes playing here. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to play here unless you're in the mood to practice your distance drives.

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a great course for a quick play. Holes 1-11 are all out in the open, where longer drivers can take advantage and make birdi pretty easily if you have a close 2nd shot. A few holes are tucked underneath trees which make the approach difficult. Overall a really fun course and a must play if you have an hour or two.

Cons:

The only cons is that maybe the par values should be changed. I am a longer driver, so making birdi on a lot of the holes seemed to be easier than it should. Also baseball and softball fields line holes 12-15 which makes playing them difficult if games are in progress.
