Challenging but fun

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice layout around a creek, but easy to stay out of the water. Most holes are not real long but must be accurate.

Cons:

fairly tough but fun. a lot of trees, mostly hyzer shot on back 9

Other Thoughts:

Reviewer below gives good details. Fun course, will play tournaments there next year

fun rec course with new amenities but some filler 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-makes good use of the creek and elevation
-terrain makes for fun holes that challenge the rec to intermediate player in distance control and hitting lines
-new concrete pads, detailed signage
-discatchers in good condition
-tape on basket spokes help with navigation
-the creek is not too deep to retrieve discs
-plenty of parking, lots of amenities at the Y

Cons:

-definitely leans on shorter hyzer shots, requires accuracy but not line shaping
-the back nine is an out and back layout that gets repetitive
-the final few holes on the way back play parallel to holes 9-11, not as close together as i expected but errant drives could find their way into other fairways
-one instance where the taped basket spoke pointed the wrong direction to the next tee but it was obvious where the tee was
-if you really shank a hyzer on 9-13 you could end up through the rough, over a fence, and in the creek
-the baseball diamond is in play on hole 17, easy to hyzer over the fence
-a bit of a walk from 15 to 16 and from 18 to the parking lot

Other Thoughts:

This course is much improved over the conditions described by the early reviewers. New concrete tee pads and detailed signage make navigation a breeze, which seemed to be the main complaint.

It's a perfect rec course for an area like Burnet. The holes are mostly on the shorter side and required hitting gaps but you can throw a hyzer on nearly every hole. The creek adds some pucker factor on a handful of holes and the elevation is well-utilized to create some really fun and scoreable holes for the red to white level player.

The first 8 holes stand out from the rest of the course. They play around and across the creek and feature 90% of the elevation changes on the course, from slight undulations on the first handful to the more significant up and down on 6-8. The latter part of the course plays out and back through a narrow strip of land that is flat and a bit more wooded than the front. Holes 9-13 get very repetitive, 14-15 feature a nice break through a lightly-wooded meadow with an elevation drop, and then 16-18 are longer holes that get you back toward the parking lot.

This course is fun for the less experienced amateur and now has the amenities it needs to really appeal to that crowd. The ratings have seen a spike since the new tees and signs went in but I would not say that this is a really good course. It is good but it has its limitations and an experienced player should be able to shred here. It's absolutely worth playing when you're in or near Burnet but I wouldn't say it's worth the 1.5 hour round trip from I-35 just to play here. That said, it's a great stop on the way to Lake Buchanan or Inks Lake. Course baggers can make it part of a loop from Flat Creek and Westside in Marble Falls.

Decent small town course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee signs on all the holes
Cement Tee Pads on all the holes
Flow is pretty basic, other than finding hole 5, the rest of the course was easy to find
GREAT use of the elevation and creek.

Cons:

Long walk between a few of the holes, specially basket 18 back to the parking lot to hole 1.
Course was nicely maintained, with the exception of the 2 farthest away holes 14/15.
Several of the holes seem to be repeditive, that is why the 3 over a 3.5.

Other Thoughts:

This is actually a decent course in a small town with little to work with.

Hole 1 starts off behind the YMCA by the large parking lot and pavilion. You have 4 run of the mill holes between the road, railroad tracks with a creek between them.

Then over to hole 5 that is across the road. This was the only spot I had to actually look for the next tee. Nice right to left shot down the creek to the basket.

Then a fun shot hole 6, although a short hole, you can't see the basket from the tee, you want your shot to be under the tree, throw past the basket and your in the creek.

Fun uphill shot #7.

Then probably the signature hole for this course, nice shot from the top of the hill down to the basket across the creek and to the left of the fairway. There are other good/better holes on this course, but this was the most scenic and fun to play.

Then you get bored for a bit, The next 5 holes are along the creek, some have mando's keeping you out of 16's fairway and #13 has a double mando for a short hole.

Then 14 and 15 are across the creek, basically the same right to left shot you just had on the last 5 or so holes. Long walk to 16's tee pad for a very long hole down the dirt road with a mondo keeping you out of 11's fairway.

17 was also an interesting shot, mostly open with the ball fields to the left with the basket down in the trees, blind shot off the tee.

18 was a longer hole across a small field to the basket in the trees near the creek.

Then a long walk back to the parking lot.

Again, this is a small town course, all the holes pretty much follow the Hamilton Creek. It is pretty and as long as you like throwing hyzers, it is a fun course to play.

Would I play here again?

This is a tough one, while as a hole the course is decent, it is rather repetitive hyzer hyzer hyzer shots. But it does play along a creek with large tree's. I always enjoy courses like this. I would play this one over the other 9 hole course in town. But I am not driving out of the way to play here again.

Updates address many of the previous complaints regarding this course in older reviews 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 5, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

• Concrete tee pads
• Great signs at every hole
• Plenty of parking near the tee so long as there isn't any major games being played on the nearby baseball/softball fields
• The creek the course is built around comes into play nicely on several of the holes.
• The course is typically well maintained
• Good use of the terrain to make holes interesting
• In most places the creek is shallow and narrow enough to retrieve your disc with either a stick or a bit of wading

Cons:

• Only one set of teepads
• The creek I mentioned before can rise after rains making the natural crossings to a couple holes difficult to navigate
• Shot selection is mostly limited to hyzers and straight shots for a RHBH player due to the layout of the holes
• Holes 9-12 are all very similar in approach and distance
• There's a decent amount of doubling back to get to the next hole in a few places, primarily 3->4, 15->16, and 16->17. However it's not too much of an inconvenience, especially with the signs pointing in the direction of the next tee pad on every hole.

Other Thoughts:

I'd disregard most of the reviews predating the course update in late 2013. The YMCA bought out the rec center who's land this course was built on, adding concrete tee pads and signs in the process which addresses many people's primary complaint. The current map on this page isn't updated with the new layout which got rid of holes 17 and 18 and moved them between holes 13 and what used to be 14 (now 16). I have added a simple updated version of the map. While this may be the only 18 hole course in the area, all in all it's a lot of fun to play and definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

Good Course, NEW Tees 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 20, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

NEW AND IMPROVED. After suffering for years with lousy natural tees and no signage, this course has been updated with brand new concrete teepads and very nice signs.

This 18 hole course is built behind the newly renamed "YMCA of the Highland Lakes at Galloway Hammond." There is a very large parking area that places you right on the first tee.

The course covers a nice area of treed land that is divided by a creek. There is usually some water in the lower areas of the creek, but not so much that you can't retrieve discs. During wet times of year the water becomes a more significant obstacle.

Holes 1 through 4 work around an area south of the access drive. Good use of the creek and large trees in the area create holes requiring a variety of straight, hyzer and anhyzer drives. Basket for Hole 4 is perched at the edge of the creek bed, and offers good risk/reward on the approach shot.

Holes 5, 6 & 7 are on the north side of the access road and play along the west side the creek. There are some decent elevation changes and large trees to add challenge to the holes.

Hole 8 tees off from the highest ground, across the creek, and down to the basket probably 25' below. The basket is guarded by trees but the shortish downhill drive gives a good birdie opportunity here.

Holes 9 - 16 play down a stretch that is bordered by the creek to the north and private land (fenceline) to the south. There are several mandos to keep you from driving onto folks playing back toward you on the other side of the lane. With the creek and fenceline O.B. and considerable trees to work through these holes place a premium on line shaping and disc placement.

Hole 16 is the only Par 4 and the longest at 623'. The fenceline is a tight O.B. on the left side of most of the hole, and a walking trail is O.B. on the right so the ability to drive straight is helpful here.

Holes 17 and 18 offer the best opportunities to air out your drive as they are wide open off of the tee, but the baskets themselves are well guarded by trees.

Even though most holes are in the 250' - 350' range, they are well designed using the available elevation and especially the trees and O.B.

Cons:

Most of my past "cons" have been eliminated with construction of concrete teepads and installation of good, descriptive signs. Such an improvement!

There are no restrooms or water out on the course, but I assume that you can use those inside the YMCA building.

Other Thoughts:

The recent re-design has eliminated old holes 17 & 18 due to conflicts with parking for the ball fields. New holes 14 & 15 now play down into a new area and are worthy replacements for the old holes.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is built at a community rec. center. There is some fun shots especially hole 8 where you shoot from the top of a hill across the creek. This is a challenging course due to the creek that runs throughout the course. The baskets are nice DISCatchers that are in great shape. The designers used as much elevation as they could. Hole 6 and 8 you throw from the top of the hill. 6 was a fun hole because you throw from the top of the hill to a basket that only has 10 ft until the creek behind it.

Cons:

The navigation is the worst part about this course. The first four holes no longer have the blue ribbon markers for the tee pads. Hole 5 did then you need to walk up the hill to see number 6's tee pad( it has a blue ribbon). Everything after six was easy to navigate until we got to hole 13 and 14, where I did not see any tees. I made up my own locations to throw from where I thought the designer wanted.

Other Thoughts:

If I was in the area again I would play it again. The course would be greatly improved if there were tee signs. Hole 8 actually had one but holes 1-4 and 13-14 didnt have any which affected the fun level of the course because I had to spend time looking around.

Sweetness 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Sweet course that uses what elevation is there to the fullest. There are many different shots here ranging from the big boomers to the short technical shots but not to technical Many different skill levels will enjoy this course. You will have to have a mix in your bag to score well. The baskets are in good condition and the pads are ok as well. There is never anyone here or at least I have never see anyone. I never never seen it real overgrown at all which is nice. The creek brings in the challenge of OB without losing your plastic. There are many things for the fmily to do in the park if they arent into playing DG.

Cons:

Navigation might be an issue but its not near as bad as I have seen at other places. The crossing of 14 and 15 doesnt seem to be as big as an issue as everyone seems to make it beause there is never anyone out here. Bring your beverages because it can get hot because there isnt alot of shade!

Other Thoughts:

Its right off of 29 which makes it an easy stop if your traveling from Georetown to Llano. This course is underated compared to what it used to be. I think the redesign made it alot better and you should stop by and check it out.

this course is better than those old reviews 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has well defined fairways, from nice open holes that let you air it out to highly technical holes that reward you for having control and punish you for lack of it. The OB areas make for a more challenging round. Mandos also throw in an extra twist. The course is easy to follow and the course flows well getting the best use out of the natural terrain and foliage.

Cons:

The only con I could see being a con for anyone, would be that the fairways for hole 14 and 15 cross. This was not a problem at the tournament that was held there so it should not be a problem in normal play.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of work has gone into improving this course. Those of you who have shrugged it off need to get back out and play it again.

This courses rating needs to be reset since the course essentially had an overhaul in 2009

Reborn 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is an intermediate level par 55 course. I have personally redesigned the course to increase overall difficulty by adding a few mando's and more o.b. New Tee Signs and Concrete Tees have completed this course. Holes now range from 171' to 623'. Excellent use of available elevation and natural hazards.

Cons:

A bit of a long walk from 18 to the parking lot, mostly because Hole 18 used to be the 16th hole of the course until a recent partial re-design. Hole 17 and Hole 18 were removed, and Holes 14 and 15 were created in their place.

Other Thoughts:

As some reviews state that the course seems redundant with the availability of backhand hyzers on most holes, this is not entirely true. In actuality there are multiple lines available on most every hole that allow any player to have a fair chance at success on this course. There may be a RHBH Hyzer available, but is it the best shot for the hole?

Short course, needs map 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

No one was there so I finished the whole thing in about 45 minutes. The downside with no one being there is I had no idea where the tees were!

Cons:

As other reviewers have mentioned, this course is hard to navigate because there are no tees (well, none beyond hole 3). The reason is that they originally had 9 baskets, which were all labeled. They added 9 more baskets, but did not change the labels (and did not add labels for baskets 10-18). So between the baskets labeled 4 and 5, there are another 6-7 holes. Very confusing. I actually only played 17 holes, which means there was one that I apparently didn't find.

Other Thoughts:

I don't necessarily think this course can ever be great, even if they fixed the tees and the baskets. The holes are too short and not very difficult at all. But if they add tee markers and relabel the baskets, I may stop by and play once in a while if I'm passing through.

Course as been redesigned and tees marked 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 19, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is actually now 18 holes (although you would never know it unless you play with a local). It has diverse terrain with just about every type of tee shot. It's got your left benders, right benders, up-hillers, down-hillers, a creek that runs through it, shots through narrow openings in the woods, and shots in open fields. The only thing it doesn't have is a long hole. All of the holes are par-able and most birdie-able, but I wouldn't call it an easy course-- more of an intermediate course.

Very little traffic means never having to wait.

Cons:

The tees are not marked! At all! Anywhere! Ahhhh! I was playing with my nephew and we were totally lost just making up our own tees after we'd find a basket. Luckily, before we got too far along a local disc golfer showed up and we started over playing from the correct tees, which seemed to me to just be random spots on the ground because the course is not played enough to wear-down the grass to make discernible tee boxes.

Other Thoughts:

The local I was playing with told me they had plans to put in tee boxes in the near future, and really, that's the only thing this course lacks. Can't wait to play it again.

Edit (4-9-09): After playing this course a few more times I have come to the realization that this is more of a pitch and putt course. I drive with either my putter or mid-range on all but 3 holes. It is fairly easy but still offers some challenge because of the creek, trees and the OB areas. I've uploaded a course map with the new design, but the baskets are still marked with the old layout numbers so some of them won't match the course map.

Edit (4-1-10): The course has been slightly redesigned (again).

Changes include:

-Previous 150' filler Hole no. 2 is now a good bit over 300' slightly uphill with a couple of different lines you can hit, but both the straight and anny lines are challenging.

-Hole 3 is a new short anny shot of about 200' and plays from the previous Hole 4's teebox.

-Hole 4 is now a bit easier and shorter. It's also slightly downhill instead of being slightly uphill like it previously was.

-The short uphill Hole 7's teebox has been moved to a more challenging location behind a tree instead out in the open.

-Hole 10's teebox has been moved over about ten feet, creating more tree obstacles to get around.

-Hole 11 now has straight and narrow tunnel path or a long round-about hyzer.

-Hole 12 is completely new, although similar to 10 and 11-- all 3 being around 300' hyzer shots through woods.

-Previous holes 13 and 14 have been combined to form the only par 4 out here-- a long straight hole with OB that runs parallel to fairway about ten feet to the left.

-Hole 18's box has been moved closer to the water's edge so it's a bit more of a (risky) anhyzer shot or you can shoot a (very risky) hyzer over the creek.

-Teeboxes are now clearly marked with blue tassels in the ground and some teeboxes are now gravel instead of natural dirt.

-Mandos have been added for safety reasons, but it also ups the difficulty.

-Overall, the difficulty has been increased by a noticeable amount, and the course is better off for it. Combined with the improved teeboxes this bumps the course up to a solid 3...almost a 3.5.

Burnet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This course is apparently a work in progress. They are slowly turning it into an 18 hole course. All 18 baskets are in but the new tee pads are not marked. It definitely has the potential to be a great course in a couple of years.

Cons:

It is impossible to find the tee pads after hole #4. Some locals have put in ground level numbered markers but they are impossible to locate if you don't know where to look. The creek is very deep and I saw a few snakes. The grass needed mowing and there were trimmed tree limbs laying everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

I will edit this review when they finish upgrading the course.
