A Disappointing Conclusion 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plains is an interesting, if flat, nine-holer that includes some good lower-level gameplay challenge.

-Amenities: Not a whole lot. However, wooden tee boxes have numbers and occasional distances, and the baskets are good.

-Terrain: Very flat, but Plains does a decent job of mixing open, closed, and in between. It's predominantly wooded, but (1)-(4) give you some open shots and breathing room to warm up before hitting the tight fairways.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: It's a par-27 course, but Plains makes good use of the available space. There's slight variety of distance from about 200' to 300', but the variety of shapes is especially notable. (1) is a moderately wooded "choose your own route hole", (2) is wide open, (3)-(4) are open shots leading to pocket baskets in the woods, and the rest are heavily wooded technical shots. Birdies will require some finesse and lots of commitment in the woods. Speaking of, I enjoyed the variety in the woods. Some were variations of straight at it, and there was one left and one right bend. I was especially thrilled with holes (1)-(4), which were fair and fun--see more below about the second half.

Cons:

The old trope of too many trees, and some infrastructure issues.

-Tightness: Hole (5) was laughable. Perhaps with enough tries you could throw a trick shot that went down this winding walking path of a fairway. (6) and (9) were highly questionable as well, requiring either two-foot wide precision for much of the fairway or luck. I had hoped to give Plains a 2.5 or 3.0, but these holes made that impossible, because they didn't give you a fair chance to throw a believable line.

-Overgrowth: Hole (8) is essentially unplayable due to woeful overgrowth. Some of the other holes are pretty prickly close to the greens too, especially (3) and (7).

-Drainage: Some severe issues when I visited. (1)-(4) were all very marshy, with the tee for (2) so muddy and flooded that it was dangerous to throw from. After rain or snow, it might be better dubbed Floodplains Park.

-Scope: Even in pristine condition I doubt if Plains could rise above Typical. It's a lot of nice 200-300' holes on so-so terrain, which just isn't the most fantastic possible disc golf out there.

-Navigation: With no tee maps or next tee cues, there were a couple of times that my group got turned around. Fairways (3)-(4) and (8)-(9) cross, which is the chief confusion. I would come armed with the DGCR map and/or UDisc.

Other Thoughts:

For a recreational to lower intermediate layout, Plains Park began remarkably good. The holes all feel different and require slightly different challenges each time. However, the woods section needs some slightly more generous fairways and upkeep, in addition to a series of other minorly annoying issues. Overall, I definitely enjoyed playing here, but its utility will be pretty limited. I think it's Reasonable, but a Typical course would avoid the issues of throwing line better.

Fun and simple 9 holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ A decent nine hole course that includes open and wooded holes

+ Minimal (but useful) tee signs, including distance and an arrow pointing toward the basket

+ This might be controversial, but I really liked the addition of the homemade flags on top of the baskets: made them much easier to spot in the woods

+ Eight of the nine holes are good (or very good, for a short and tight park-based course). #1 incorporates a grove of trees and small stream; #3 and #4 are open or partially open, and get close to 300'; #5, #6, #7 require precision shots in the woods

Cons:

- Flat ground and subject to flooding. Because there are no teepads, muddy ground can really compromise the experience

- Hole #8 is a mess: you're trying to find a route high above a wall of bushes and through trees; then facing a very sharp dogleg right. It was an unexpectedly bad hole coming near the end of a decent layout

- I don't know when the park tends to be busy, but when it or the playing fields are in use, you'll have trouble playing much of the course

Other Thoughts:

~ Located in a park adjacent to a Mennonite Church, the section of Plains Park nearest the church parking lot is a tribute to peace and peacemakers in history. There's a peace pole, along with signs depicting influential figures from history. The design of the signs themselves is easily mistaken for tee signs! The setting is interesting, and certainly unusual for disc golf

~ A fun, quick play for experienced players (30 minutes or so), and a good place to introduce newbies to the game

Plain Plains Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ All baskets have eye-catching flags on top so you can see them from far away.
+ Appropriate distances for players just starting out.
+ Some tricky wooded throws.
+ Pre-made scorecards with course map on the back are available at the park info board.
+ Most of the fairways are clean.

Cons:

- The tee areas are either patches of dirt or beds of stone and gravel. Both were sloppy after the recent rains/snowmelt.
- There was no signage of any kind except for the wooden arrows at every tee pointing the general way to throw showing the hole number and distance.
- No elevation or hazards to speak of.
- The whole course feels cramped and stuffed within the tiny park area. A player would feel constricted.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole at this course is hole 5 because of the fun little path that the player has to weave through the trees in order to reach the basket. My least favorite hole here is 8 not because of the sudden right turn but because of how unclear it was where I was meant to throw. The fairway was blocked by bushes.

As for the course as a whole, Plains Park is nothing special. It's tiny and flat. Avoid the course after rain. There are three open holes, five wooded holes and one hybrid hole. There are nine baskets here with some semblance of cleanliness and order. It is very much the kind of course that is meant to introduce someone to the sport or provide a quick diversion. In that respect, Plains Park performs its job well. The trees are just dense enough to provide a manageable challenge for the novice, and the open holes are just long enough to show a new player what it's like to throw a nice glide. More experienced players will breeze through the open holes. Just don't let your guard down with the wooded holes. Bogeys are possible here with the 'tree pinball' effect. Plains Park is functional, and that's about as generous as I can be with this course.

Bottom line: Recommended for beginners. Come to Plains Park if you want to show someone how to play or if you only have the time for a speedy 9.

Nice small course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Signs pointing towards the pin with distance to pin.
Open fairways on a couple holes with mowed grass, for nice easy drives.
Mixed wooded and open holes so it's not repetitive.
Baskets are I'm good shape.

Cons:

Signs don't have start and end point or any hole description on them.
Wooded holes have no good lines to throw sometimes.
The holes cross each other sometimes so you have to look for the next tee a bit.
Couldn't find the tee for hole 9, things were a bit overgrown so I left without playing it.
Baskets aren't numbered, but have these ugly flags on them so you can tell where they are I guess

You Got To Get Rid Of These Ugly Basket Flags! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plains Park is a small city park in Hatfield. The park seems to be filled with clutter. There's a small community building of some sort, a nice little children's play area, a picnic pavilion, a walking path with these little historical plagues everywhere, some artwork sticking up here and there, a ball field and the disc golf course. The course starts near the parking lot and # 1 is really the only hole that has to play through all this stuff. # 2 is more open and then 3-9 play in the wooded area.

The pads are natural which are fine here. The signs are simple little ones reading T1 and the distance on an arrow. Different but OK. The baskets are Mach II but some reason, someone has added a PVC cross section above the basket with four pieces of yellow plastic material hanging down. It looks ridiculous and is a total eyesore to the park. I'm amazed that some community members haven't complained.

The course plays recreational but has some enjoyable little throws with the challenge being navigating the trees. # 3 is 290' and the basket is hidden behind some bushes. # 8 is a bigger hyser into the bushes. The distances are mostly in the 200's.

Cons:

There are a couple of crossing fairways. # 4 crosses over the # 3 fairway and # 8 crosses over the # 9 fairway. This concerns me very little as I think you could probably play this course a hundred times and never see another golfer here.

Same with the natural pads. They're just fine here.

Now about these hideous yellow basket flags. You don't need extra flags on the nine baskets here. They're plenty visible. And if you feel you must provide a more visible look then do what other courses do and just have one flag at 5he top.

Recreational length and challenge.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, this is a pretty nice little rec nine hole course. Probably just a stitch below average but very serviceable. If I lived in Hatfield, I'd play this little course every day. There are other options in the vicinity five or six miles away but this would be fine to be my daily go to course. But then again, I'm a old recreational player looking for an easy walk in the park. Young serious players just might go looking for a bigger challenge.

An okay and basic course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 3, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is an okay beginners course for area locals with a mix of light forest, open grass, and medium forest holes all on perfectly flat ground. About 2/3s of the course is entirely reasonable and it's varied enough given the limited terrain.

The dirt tees with wood lines have gotten tee posts with distance and arrows in recent years. The baskets are now flying flags of a sort for visibility.

Cons:

#2 & 3 approaches and actually tees off from around the batting cage. Baseball and soccer games will interrupt any planned rounds.

#5 had a lot of small trees to kick discs with any throw right off the tee. A few less small trees upfront would help define an actual fairway.

The last three holes weren't good. #7 is long and tight with lots of brush on both sides to lose discs. #8 & 9 crisscross into each other with ill-defined fairways and lots of trees. This part of the course could use rethinking and brush clearing.

Other Thoughts:

The road had a traffic jam the entire 90 minutes I was there the first time during rush hour. It's a church so parking might not be available Sunday Mornings.

Amenities: The bathroom here was always open and clean and it has a nice playground.

Don't go out of your way 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. It's about 3 miles from my house

2. It has baskets?

3. It's not Windlestrae

Cons:

1.#3 and #4 are often unplayable because they require you to drive through soccer fields that are often in use.

2. If you are a newbie throwing a high-speed disc (like I was once), you can end up throwing into a busy playground or a busier road on #1.

3. You can easily lose a disc up on the pine trees on hole 2, the thick brush left of the basket on hole 3, or the even thicker brush on the entire right side of 6 and 7.

4. The field has bad drainage around the #2 basket and #3 tee pad.

5. Course map is not readily available and no signage

Other Thoughts:

#1 isn't a bad hole, despite their closeness to a playground and busy road. It reminds me of the average hole at Boyertown. Nice distribution of trees.

2 and 3 are pretty straight forward over a field.

4 is mostly open but requires an accurate shot to make the tunnel into the woods.

5 has a hysterically narrow path (I refuse to call it a fairway) to try to shoot down and you will hit a tree 83% of the time.

6 has too many trees, but has a RHFH and RHBH line.

7 is pretty much only RHBH or major anhyzer RFH and has some major nastiness to the right of a pretty narrow fairway.
And 8.... just skip 8.

9 would be nice but there are 2 annoying trees not far enough to the left of the tee pad, and also some close trees to the right.

I come here quite often after work to practice my drive and throw some putts. I usually play #1, #2, and #3 a few times if people aren't playing soccer. If they are, I'll play #1, #2, #5 and #9 a few times. I like the end of 9 for some putting practice.

Conclusion: Don't drive too far out of your way to play here.

Solid practice course 2+ years drive by

This is 2 minutes from my home and work so it is great for a quick 9 or 18.
Some holes are wide open others are tightly wooded, so you can work on lots of different shots.
Rarely crowded.

Cons:

Hole #2 does not drain well at all. One week after a storm and it is still a bog in front of the hole. Bring your crappy shoes.
Nothing too long, all par 3's.

Other Thoughts:

For those in the Lansdale area this really is a hidden gem to get in a quick round and work on your game. Easy to get to and easy parking.

First time! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 5 minutes from home, so I'll likely be playing it frequently
- Short and compact course. Good if you have limited time to play.
- Easy, even though it was our very first time playing we were only 2 or 3 over par, as an average.
- I don't think many people know about it, so it's probably not going to be crowded.

Cons:

- Holes 2, 3 and 4 maneuvre near or thru the baseball field, so if there is a game, forget a bout them.
- There is a lot of undergrowth between the trees. This was a huge problem for my wife.
- The tees could use some maintenance, although they weren't in a bad shape.
- After a week of rain the tees were very muddy and slippery.
- Short course: If what you want is to spend the day playing, this is not the right place to go.

Other Thoughts:

My wife and I went to Plains Park to try disc golf for the first time, since it's only 5 minutes from home.
It was a weekday, around 5:45pm, and we had the park for ourselves except for a couple kids playing in the basketball court.

1st hole: Very nice placement, with the tee right by the parking lot.
2nd hole: Nice clean shot, although it gets close to the baseball field.
3rd hole: Another clean shot, this time through the baseball field.
4th hole: This is the one that gets you into the forest area. Nice overall.
5th hole: The first tricky one. You have to maneuver in a narrow trail. For total beginners like us it was more a throw and pray game from this point...
6th hole: Parallel to the fifth one, and very similar.
7th hole: Similar to the previous two, but on a wider fairway. Fun overall.
8th hole: This one is very tricky, curves sharply to the right.
9th hole: The shortest hole, although through a dense cover.

Practice Practice Practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Some interesting shot shapes and lines to work on.
Rarely have to worry about other park patrons, occasionally a dog walker on the back paths or a soccer game (which make 3 and 4 unplayable).
Real bathrooms (closed in the winter)
Water fountain
The car in the woods behind 6's tee
Huge open field to do field work (A soccer field sits directly between baskets 3 and 4)
Tee markers are arrows with distances on them pointing at the basket.

Cons:

Holes 2 and 3 can get very muddy.
Hole 8
The rough is quite thorny
The gravel paths can sometimes chew up your discs

Other Thoughts:

I play this course quite a bit as it's my closest local (with baskets). It's a fun little practice course that will let you work on a variety of shots.

Hole 1 is a straight shot through a stand of large trees. There are several other lines to the basket. Miss too far left and you are heading towards a playground, miss too far right and you could end up on the road.
Hole 2 is a straight shot with one large tree on the left and a couple off to the right.
Hole 3 is another basically straight shot but because of the way the basket is tucked into the trees, the ace opportunity requires a huge annie (rhbh).
Hole 4 is a straight line with trees along the left side and a wall of trees about 50' before the basket with the tunnel following the walking path. Miss the line right and you have to decide between the high risk shot through the woods, or throwing back to the path.
Hole 5 is where the course moves into the woods. The basically straight path bends in the middle forcing you to choose a path at least slightly through the thick little trees. I can't recommend a line here as I haven't found a consistent one yet. My best results tend to come from hyzer-flipping a mid straight up the path and hoping it gets past the trees in the middle. The basket is tucked in off the path on the left behind a large tree.
Hole 6 has a few decent lines including a big hyzer out over the walking path, but the recent removal of a single tree about 2/3 of the way down the most direct annie line now means you only have to make a great throw to get to the basket, not make a great throw AND get extremely lucky.
Hole 7 is a big gentle hyzer throw down a straight path.
Hole 8. Hole 8. Hole 8. When I first started playing, I bought a Wolf for hole 8. I don't carry it anymore, but something super understable like that or a strong hyzer flick that will turn the whole way "can" work it's way along the path towards the basket leaving you a reasonable upshot that will also most likely need to continue working to the right. I've seen people throw other lines through the trees, usually up high, that occasionally work. Ultimately though, I don't think there is a line on this hole that can be consistently hit because of how thick the woods are.
Hole 9 My most consistent shot here is a hyzer-flipped leopard that, if it makes it through the line of skinny trees about 15' in front of the tee (My window is less than 2' wide) is quite often parked within 10' of the basket (usually long but there's a bit of wooded backstop to keep me close). Last time I was there a friend showed me a huge sky annie line (winter only) that my Cyclone did pretty well with.

I play this course a lot because of its proximity. If there were other courses as close or closer, I doubt I would play here very often. With that said, I always have fun when I play here. I've only ever lost one disc at this course, it was on the roof of the garage to the right of hole 2. Sat up there for several months,it was found by a friend at Camp Sank. shortly after it disappeared off the roof. Overall I think this is a nice little practice course. Nothing overly challenging here, but it's not boring either. It would get another half a star if they would clear out the rest of the thorny underbrush from the rough.

Other Thoughts:

You will not be wowed by this course. It does the job if you live nearby and want to get a quick 9 in after work. I can't imagine there was a whole lot of money put into the course, so I'll give it credit for being as good as it could be, but that doesn't make for an objective review so it's still getting a 1.

Needs alot of work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a challenge to create a good disc golf course on an open ballfield plus a wooded half acre or so. So I give credit for the effort.

Cons:

Holes on the ballfield uninteresting as designed. In the woodland (5 to 9), dense woods have scarcely been modified, therefore players can hardly make out any sort of fairways; holes confusing and baskets/ tees now in a degree of disrepair. Couldn't find tee for #9.

Other Thoughts:

Course needs to be adopted by some local club or other advocate, otherwise its future may be in doubt. Needs repairs, pruning, and truthfully an overhaul of design. Hole #1 a bit too close to playground area for starters. Mostly it's the pruning though !

Nice quick play 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 11, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is great for a quick play if you are in the area. The course map was very useful and I was able to follow the course the first time out with it. For such a small area, the designers did a good job of incorporating the natural elements to make a varied and fun course. Some open shots to give you a birdie chance, and some more technical shots through the trees. As a beginner to the sport, the distances of the holes on this course were perfect for my skill level. I felt a par was achievable on every hole, and with a quality drive, birdies as well. Good way to practice many aspects of the game: shorter drives, mid range shots, and putting.

Cons:

As stated previously, the course plays through a soccer field and walking trail. The trail isn't very large, and I have never had an issue with people being in the way. If there is a soccer game going on, hole 3 is completely unplayable, and hole 4 is only playable is you are very confident you can throw your drive relatively straight. Again, I have never encountered an issue in the 10 or so times I have played the course, so it is only a minor concern.

Some of the holes border on unfair. Hole 5 has no real fairway, and it takes some luck to land a drive neer the basket. Hole 8 is also a crazy anhyzer shot through the heart of the woods that takes a prayer to land close. A little thinning of trees would improve things tremendously.

Without the use of the map provided at the park, or online here, the course would be tricky to navigate the first time through. With the map, I was able to navigate it without issue, just look for the mulched tee pads on each hole.

Also, basket numbers would really help the first timer navigate.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course would be rated higher if not for the other elements of the park interfering with the disc golf layout and the unfair shots that there are. Can't fault the park too much, since the disc golf course was shoe horned in here after all those elements existed (I imagine). If given the choice, I would play this course over the Branchwood course due to the increased technical aspects and better layout. Some reviewers expressed concern over the proximity to the road on hole 1, but unless you are WAY OFF with your drive, this shouldn't pose much of a problem.

I wouldn't make a special trip from far away to come check out the course, but if you are local, it is definitely worth a visit. The playground seems nice as well if you have children to bring with you. The course itself is child friendly as well if they are interested in giving it a shot.

Plains Park DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good for a quick play or to take a beginner to learn the game. The park is pretty nice and there are a couple of cool holes. One stand-out starts out in the open and plays into the woods to a basket surrounded by trees.
Decent place to work on your game if you live nearby. Any disc golf course is better than no disc golf course but there are some major flaws.

Cons:

This course leaves a lot to be desired.
First of all, the beginning of the course plays through a baseball field and a soccer field which could be dangerous if any other activities are going on. Hole 1 plays right next to a somewhat major road (an errant disc from a friend of mine went over the rd narrowly missing some traffic) Also, the "fairways" on the last few holes double as a walking path which has obvious implications.
There are no real defined fairways in the wooded section of the course...my solution was to throw a tomahawk and pray. Navigation through the wooded section was also difficult; we couldnt figure out which basket to throw to in some situations.

Other Thoughts:

An ok place to hone your skills if you live locally but not worth going out of the way for.

Basic Intro Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plains Park DGC is very easy to get to. The course sits on a heavily traveled county road and is easy to spot, as the course is adjacent to a local church.

Although in a community park, the course has some variation in fairway types from open, to mixed to, to heavily wooded. Additionally, there are a few holes that had interesting doglegs or "S" shaped fairways.

The baskets were in good shape, as was the park itself. Tee signs indicated the direction to the basket and the hole length.

Cons:

The most serious con with Plains Park is the proximity of the course to other public areas of the park. On nearly every hole, the fairway is adjacent to a playground, walking path, soccer field, or other location where a bystander could be in danger from an errant throw. Course designs such as these create too much exposure for a possible accident that would lead to the course being pulled or for litigation to tarnish the sport.

Despite making good use of the land that was available, the hole lengths were fairly short and the layout of several of the holes were basic straight shots. The course was almost completely flat with no real elevation change on any hole.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the length of the cons, this isn't a bad course...but it's not a good course either. In a word, this course is vanilla. Like so many other community courses, Plains Park is another good place for a new player, child, or senior to get some initial exposure to disc golf before moving on to a more professional course.

Best they could do with land 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course well positioned, given minimal land.

Cons:

Back five have ridiculously thin fairways.

Other Thoughts:

The first four manage to utilize the open space very well. They are challenging and fun. The other five just try to fit in the small walking trails in the forest. They are shorter holes that you just want to gently glide your disc down the trail without hitting a tree (almost impossible). I'll always applaud anyone willing to squeeze a course in a tight space - they couldn't do much more with the space given. This is on church property, so it is nice for them to let anyone play this course.

Excitable but something's wrong... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Bathrooms on site
-Scorecards with maps, always good
-Friendly people in the area
-A few choice holes did really challenge skill

Cons:

-Many holes relied on lucky shots through trees
-I liked hole 3 but I could picture the entire hole being inturrupted by activity on the soccer or baseball field
-Tees and baskets still pretty hard to find even using the map

Other Thoughts:

- The course was cool, but I would not go out of my way to play it
- Hole 1 was a pretty straight shot that makes you worry about a few trees
- Hole 2 required good thinking. There were two very large trees you had to go around to get to another straight shot
- Hole 3 was another straight shot, this time through two sports fields (I was lucky that they were empty) and ending in a protected basket
- Hole 4 was where you enter the woods, like #3 it was a straight shot that ended in a protected hole
-Hole 5 was the beginning of the luck holes. You have trees about fifteen feet away that you have to avoid only to run into another set of trees twenty feet after that. I suggest just chucking a power shot hopefully through them.
- Hole 6 was a fairly straight shot protected by more trees. This involved a "someone's gotta hit it" tree in the middle of the fairway that eliminates the straight shot.
- Hole 7 requires a good RHBH and a set of trees you need to get lucky to get past.
- Hole 8 took a miracle to find even with the map. It is straight for about 25 feet and takes a sharp left for the last 175 or so. This required a set of nice rolls to scrape out a 4
- In front of Hole 9 is four trees. You close your eyes and T-Hawk through it, good luck.
- Overall the course just "passed" but none of the holes really did anything for me. I was a little disappointed because I brought my dad out for the first time and it was fairly frustrating.
