Fun shots, rough setting 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays in a rocky desert area with scattered trees and plenty of brush. If you miss your landing zone, you often have awkward shots out of, over or around chest to head high bushes, great punishment for inaccuracy. A few of the holes use the large pine trees to force some specific lines off the tee, the rest put more of a premium on hitting a spot than line shaping with multiple ways to get to the hole. Large rock piles come into play, with a few shots over or around the rocks.

There is some variety in the kinds of shots you'll need here, and the alternate tees add a little more. There are three pads for each hole with a sign at the white (middle) tee showing all three lines and distances. A few holes change things up from the different tees, others just have slightly different distances on similar lines. The staff was very friendly, and provided a map of the property to get to the course and a map of the holes.

Cons:

There isn't a whole lot of length, it's mostly a putter course for better players. Many of the holes offer open hyzer lines, lowering the challenge level even more. Most of the interesting shots I had were when I screwed up my tee shot and had to get creative on my upshot. The tees were pretty bad, most were rutted out or had large weeds growing in them and even with the map it was a little tricky to find a few of them.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners might find some parts of this course a little rough, especially with blind landing zones that have brush to hide discs. It's a reasonable length and difficulty level overall for newer players though. More experienced players won't find a ton of challenge, there are a few fun shots but the rest is pretty straightforward. Don't go too far out of your way for this one.

Horrible Beyond Belief. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

*I didn't get bit by a diamondback.
*No waiting, because nobody who would play this course once would ever come again.
*Not pay to play unless you don't have discs.

Cons:

*Didn't get bit by a diamondback so I could leave early.
*Poor course layout.
*Easy to get your disc lost if you don't have a spotter, even easier if you do.
*No 'Next Tee' signs.
*Baskets didn't match, different type throughout.
*Too many sage bushes, you get all scratched up.
*Map given at front desk isn't that wonderful.

Other Thoughts:

Don't bother, it's a waste of your time and very frustrating. If you do go, go with someone who has gone before and has a remote idea of the layout.

Worth the drive 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Very good use of high desert terrain
*3 different tee boxes for each hole that creates 3 very different strategies--plus players of different skill levels can enjoy the course together
*Good map available to navigate course(not an intuitive layout without the map)
*Well thought out course given the terrain and available space (someone who understands the sport created it)
*Not crowded
* Super friendly staff at the camp office
*You have to really think through some of the holes and use a number of different throws and strategies...even though it's a "short course", not every hole is pitch and putt (especially from the longest of the three tees)
*

Cons:

*A bit of a drive from metro SD (But well worth it--took me 40 min. from downtown)
*Wind in the afternoon
*Hot, dusty and a lot of low brush that can be very prickly if your disc ventures inside the brush - which easily happens with the erratic gusty winds later in the afternoon (be prepared with water and proper footwear, pants, etc)

Other Thoughts:

I think this course is well worth the drive because it's so unique (it even has a basket in the middle of a windmill derrick)--it's not the most "amazing" course or layout, but alot of fun...small enough to play two or three times (once from each tee box!)
If you play the Blue tees (the furthest) and even the white ones for that matter, I would suggest using a spotter on some of the holes because they are blind drives and it's easy to lose perspective on where your disc landed (not a lot of "open" fairways)
If you go, bring plenty of water and wear shoes/boots and long pants--I went in my normal shorts and Chaco sandals and got a little scratched up, nothing serious

Next time we go, we are bringing a picnic lunch because there are some great rock formations that would be perfect for relaxing while enjoying lunch

Good design on unique terrain 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 1, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good signs. Some interesting and creative holes (one basket is in a windmill). Course plays through high desert terrain with boulders, large trees and cacti. Uncrowded (I was the only one there). Three well marked tees for every basket. Reliable course map comes with $2 fee. Some nice views. Rental discs available.

Cons:

Very rugged setting with lots of low bushes and cacti making it easy to lose a disc. Very windy in the afternoon. Can be very hot. 1st tee is a little hard to find, so get directions when you pay at the office.

Other Thoughts:

If you are sick of playing the crowded San Diego courses and don't mind a bit of a drive, then try Pine Valley. It's not world class, but you'll find solitude, clean air and some fun and challenging holes.
