The Fall of Troy 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Located in a pretty neighborhood. This nine hole course is a great addition to the town of Troy. As far as the design goes, this is a really good nine hole course. It's more wooded than open, but has a great variety of par threes. You'll know that if you stand on the long tee pad for hole one. A very fun and gorgeous opening hole off a hill, over the road, and throwing over a row of trees.

-The fun continues on hole two. I found every pad on this hole. The white pad makes a fun and tight putter/mid range shot. Hole three provides a great challenge. Definitely the hardest hole on the course from the long. 348' and down a tighter but clear fairway. There is a fallen tree that makes this hole more challenging and unique. I may get some disagreement on this. I think the fallen tree makes this hole more fun because you have to throw higher to reach the green. Find the optimum height. Love it!

-There were three sets of tees on each hole (see cons below). I could find multiple tees on some holes here. The orange pads are the shortest and offer nice ace run holes. The whites and blues are tougher but are all very fair I think. Well, at least from the ones I saw.

-The park is really nice. There's a playground and a field. The neighborhood is very pretty too. There is plenty of space too.

Cons:

-The main problem was mentioned in every other review. Navigation is very difficult. I found hole one pretty quickly, but it took me time to find hole two. I walked back toward hole 1's fairway and turned to the right and saw an orange pad. That's #3. I saw #2's basket; it's near #1's but I had a hard time finding the pad. I walked back to #1's basket and went past it and found #2's pads. After #5, I could only find #6 and #7's short pad. I found #8's white pad and only found #9's short pad. Had some of the pads been removed?

-Hole #9's basket is tilted.

-Doesn't seem to get any attention. It's in good shape and all but nobody was here when I played. Seems like this place had gotten more attention in the past but now it seems to be forgotten. Just like the band The Fall of Troy. Well known from 2005-2009 and now when you bring them up to someone, they are like "Who tf is The Fall of Troy?"

Other Thoughts:

-This nine holer is well thought out in my opinion. Hopefully it isn't going to be gone soon because it really does have something to offer. There's sporadic elevation change, a neat variety of tee shots, and good ace opportunities.

-If you are a course junkie like myself, I recommend this course. The park is super nice and offers a nice and quiet walk. If navigation issues are a pet peeve of yours in disc golf, you won't want to come here.

Only stop if you're prolific track bagger 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lowe Warner is a 9-hole track that appears at one time, based on reviews from years ago, to have some tee pads and signage. No longer. If the track was only debatable as worthy of the time a few years ago, it's definitely not at this point (unless you want the notch on your belt like I did).

+ You can tell that at one time the course was maintained and some thought was put into design. Hole 1 is actually a fun one. It plays from a narrow strip of grass on top of a steep hill, across the park road to a basket on the other side. It's a fun hole to watch the full flight of the disc across a valley.

+ Hole 9 was also good -- and the only long hole. It plays beside the park's road in the grass about 330 feet.

+ There are stone markers for the tees on holes 1 and 9.

+ Baskets still in good shape and numbered.

Cons:

Unfortunately, it does not appear that this track is maintained and probably not played very often.

- No tee markers for holes 2-8. You can figure out the layout (for the most part) based on the UDisc map for the course. The only stones marking tees that I could find were on #1 and #9.

- Very overgrown and not maintained.

- No discernable fairways for holes 5-8.

- Natural area tee pads. You basically have to guess or play safari style.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course on my way back to the Triangle from the Stanly County courses (Fox Chase and City Lake Park, which are must-plays). I decided to go 5 minutes out of my way to bag Lowe Warner. It was worth it to notch the course, but I wouldn't play it again and wouldn't recommend it unless you really want to pad your courses played numbers.

Fixer upper in quiet neighborhood 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has some cool throws. There are three 'tees' for each basket. The baskets are Innova DiscCatchers and were in pretty good shape.

There are left and right finishing holes. Some open and some wooded. There is a throw over a marshy area that is short enough for beginners and noodle arms to feel confident throwing over.

The basket rims were painted with orange, white and blue slashes to show general direction direction to the next tee.

Cons:

Signage is non-existent. Tees are marked with colored pavers. It doesn't appear that many people play this course.

Finding the tees can be very frustrating. There are throws over and near a walking path. It does not look like it gets much use either.

Other Thoughts:

We played from orange tees mostly and the whites a couple of time when we found them.

This is a course with potential. One proper tee pad for each hole would be great. Some signage showing the tee locations better would be nice.

This course is a little off the beaten path and I probably wouldn't go back unless there were some improvements. That seems unlikely as the course did not appear to be played much. Unless you're ticking off courses, I'd skip it.

A Lowe Down Dirty Shame

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 11, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lowe Warner Park was an enigma to me. There's the making of a very good to great nine hole layout; however; due to poor execution and lack of upkeep, this course offered too much frustration that it left a bad taste in my mouth. Or, that bad taste might have just come from the massive lumberyard next door.
- On the positive, I enjoyed the majority of the holes I played. The problem, which I dive into later, is that the signage is terrible, navigation is difficult and many of the pavers marking the tees are broken or missing. I spent close to the same amount of time looking for the next tee as I did actually playing holes. Once I did find the paver, or at least one of the three, I really did enjoy the course.
- There are some fun and/or challenging hole layouts. I really enjoyed holes #1, 3, 4 & 9. There were only two bad holes - #2 (could be good with minimal work) and #5 (felt like one of those 9-holer course filler holes). The other holes were all suitable, without anything standing out. A quick recap of the four good holes:
- #1 - It took a while to find the tee, but this is a very good, diverse opening hole. 290 foot from the blue (long tee), throwing downhill over the park road and trees. Very nice way to start.
- #3 - The toughest, and best, hole on the course. The hole has a narrow, low ceiling fairway making accuracy important. Or just hope your shot goes so far left that you actually have a second shot. Just don't go right. The pics on this site give a great sense of the fairway. This is a great risk/reward hole.
- #4 - I could never find the blue tee, so I played from the white. What a great hole layout. You start in the open, throw over the tall stuff to an uphill basket in the woods. It's not overly challenging - I parked my tee shot for a tap in birdie - but it's still an enjoyable layout nonetheless. Again, the picture on here does a great job showing the layout.
- #9 -It's 400 feet from the blue tee. Tee shot is through a tight gap. From there it opens up to a dogleg left. You can either be aggressive off the tee, increasing the chance you might miss the gap, or sacrifice distance to ensure you have a well place second shot. This is a solid closing hole, especially for a nine-hole course.
- Bizarre observation - this park has the most horseshoe pits I've ever seen at any one park. There are 16 sets of pits, with a large sign at the front of the playing area. Apparently, Troy is a hotbed for horseshoes, or it must be popular among the lumberyard workers to have that much space and upkeep dedicated to the game. I've seen disc golf get overlooked for mainstream sports and activities at parks before, but never at the hand of horseshoe. Go figure.

Cons:

This just seems to be a course that gets neglected and is in need of some serious attention. The thing is, it would only take a handful of locals one work day to clean up the course, improve signage and markers. You do that, and this course becomes more playable.
- You would think with a massive lumberyard next door, this course would be able to have good tee signs, or at least, stakes in the ground. And by next door, I mean there are stacks of trees on the back of the lot, one throw from the tees on #3. From the time I turned on Page Street (the road is park is on), you smell sawdust and fresh wood the entire time. If you have allergies, like me, be prepared to be bothered during your time here.
- Tee markers are a complete disaster. As mentioned above, I spent more time searching for the tees on holes #1 & 2 than I did actually playing those two holes. On #1, for example, from the pictures and map on this site, I could tell the blue tee would be on top of a hill. Even with that, it took a while to find the blue-colored paver.
- For the entire course, I could only easily find all three pavers on holes #1, 8 & 9, the three true open holes on the course. Granted, I didn't try to find the markers on every hole. On holes #2 & 3, I found broken fragments of pavers that I guess indicated where the tee was located. I couldn't find the blue markers on holes #3 & 7 either. Like I said, it won't take much to fix this problem.
- There will be frustrations of wasted time and navigation for first time players. Not only are tee markers missing, there are a couple of awkward transitions. The baskets for #1 & 2 are relatively close to each other, but you're throwing from complete opposite directions. So, after you finish hole #1, you essentially walk hole #2 backwards to get up to the tee, throw, then walk back the general direction you came from. Also, without tee signs, it could be very easy to throw to the wrong tee, especially in the stretch of #6 - 8.
- The map for this course is hand drawn, and in turn, not completely accurate nor drawn to scale. That said, there's no way I could have navigated this course without printing out the map first. I would have had no clue whatsoever where the tees for holes, 1 - 3 would be. After that, I probably would have given up and just left.
- The park as a whole wasn't in outstanding shape. The only bathrooms in the park were locked when I played at lunchtime on a Friday. Other than the horseshoe pits, the whole thing had a worn-down, neglected feel.
- Holes overlap/interfere with each other. This will only be an issue when there are others playing, but it is something to be aware of.

Other Thoughts:

I had a roller coaster of feelings about this course. Pulling into the parking lot and wasting so much time trying to find the first tee, my first impression wasn't positive, and I hadn't even thrown a shot. After each good hole, I was ready to overlook the problems, only to then have more issues trying to find tees. All that said, there really is the making of a solid course here.
- The course should follow the 'less is more' adage. I appreciate that they're trying to get three distinct tee pads/layouts for each hole, but that's only creating clutter and confusion. If a hole can realistically benefit from having three different layouts, go ahead. It would make more sense to focus on the one absolute best layout, then see how you can add a shorter or easier layout for beginners. The best layout for hole #4 isn't the blue (long) layout. It's the white (middle) layout. Focus on your one best layout, instead of three average ones.
- Hole #3 was my favorite. There's challenge, length and shot making involved to get a 3. This hole reminded me off #5 at Timmons in Greenville with its design and approach. This was a hole I felt was a well-earned three on.
- Course did have more 'good' holes than most small-town/neighborhood parks. You could see a lot of these holes on more challenging 18 hole courses (unlike King's Mountain Point, which had no holes good enough for a better course), and they would hold their own. It actually makes me intrigued about what an 18-hole layout would be like here.
- The course layout itself, at least the one I played - 7 blue tees, 2 white ones - would be a very good, above average course. It'd be a solid 2.0 - 2.5 in my book. Depending on the conditions when you play, the quality/rating could be all over the book.

Miserable in Fall 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Only thing good about this course is that its over quickly.

Cons:

Tee pads markers falling apart. At least the ones that you can find are. The holes are way to close together. Upkeep on the course seems to have been stopped.

Other Thoughts:

Maybe if more Disc Golfers were to come here they would take better care of it. But as of right now unless it gets revamped I wont even bother stopping even on my way to Fox Chase.

Nice 9 holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

3 teepads for each hole. I love this idea for a 9 holer that is the only course in town. As a beginner there are tees that fit your game and as a more advanced player there are tees that can test you as well. There is some goo variety for such a small park. you can play 27 different looks.

Navigation is tough........but then I figured out the trick! Each basket has colors painted on them that point right at the next pad of each layout. They are on the rim of the basket. And then there are bricks that have been laid in the ground with a color painted on them leading the way. Cool idea once you know how it works.

Cons:

The Teepads are kinda run down in some cases and even though I figured out the navigation trick there is very little marking them. just a colored tile in the ground which is hard to see during fall when the leaves can cover them up.

Some of the baskets are close to other hole tees. Since I'm not sure that this course gets much traffic it may not be an issue but it is a possibility that someone could take an Ape to the Dome

Do not remember benches or trashcans anywhere.

Natural Pads(maybe a con for you)

Other Thoughts:

This layout reminds me of Kelsey Scott Park in Salisbury NC. With multiple tees that have a variety of challenges this course can be used by players of many skill levels and could be a good course to develop your game. If you are in the area and have some free time it is defiantly worth a play!

Not all that challenging/ a little hard to navigate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are 3 tee locations for each of the 9 baskets, so we played through on Blue, then played again from White and that made for a decent 18. Things are pretty well groomed and we didn't have any lost discs. Park was not crowded at all and we were the only ones there.

Cons:

Sort of hard to find your way around, for example, right off the bat the blue and white tees for number 1 are unexpectedly across the road from most of the course. There is a system of colored bricks that point you to the next tee, but they are faded and the course does not flow particularly well. Course is pretty easy by any standard and I had no trouble playing below par my first time. And as someone else mentioned the longer tees on #9 are ridiculous, really long and the whole lane to the basket is overhung with tree branches. I tried it right, left, whatever and it took like 4-5 strokes each time. Sometimes the tees are only colored (faded) pavers placed into the grass.
Another note, the Red/Orange Tees seem ridiculously short to me(we only played a couple) but for that reason I definetly don't consider it a 27 hole course

Other Thoughts:

Probably won't be driving an hour to play this one again, but if it were a bit closer I would try it a couple more times

Actually kind of fun. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three sets of tees, Decent use of elevation, half moderately wooded and half open. I played from the blue paver stones as well but if I alternated from blue to red I think I would have had a pretty fun 18 holes. The way the holes and park is laid out, if you don't like a specific tee, you can easily safari all over the place. The fairways are defined enough and fairly devoid of branches and miscellaneous rough. The baskets catch well and are easy to spot from the tee although a few require a little pacing up or beside the fairway to see them. The colored bricks that guide you to the different tees are a neat idea but their color is starting to fade. The tees are natural but they're in good shape. Most of the fairways are fairly easy to hit, not too much challenge in terms of tightness. Definitely a birdie fest.

The park is very well-maintained I think, the grass was nicely cut and short. Not very secluded though because it plays around a baseball field for a couple of holes and there are some houses that are literally right there on other holes.
There's also the most impressive horseshoe pit complex I've ever seen.

Cons:

No tees or signs and those paver stones that mark the tee are a B-word to find. Not a course I'd play for the first time if I was on a strict time frame. The rough is kind of scruffy but it's not too bad.

Hole # 6 has some nasty rough on its left side, swampy, tall grass that's really sharp.

Some of the holes overlap a little depending on the tees and God forbid if this course was crowded b/c it would be like the no man's land between the trenches of WWI.

The blue tee from hole #9 is ridiculous, there is almost no space to penetrate through the hedges and dogwood type trees that are directly in front of the tee. It's really annoying b/c #9 is one of the few decently long holes and you really can't air it out. It also has the park road directly left of the tee so a quick tree kick left can easily hit a car leaving or entering the park.

Other Thoughts:

This is actually the most fun at a 9 holer I think I've had. It's fairly short but if you have some imagination and time to kill you can have a good time here.

Feels like: A 9-hole, safari version of North Asheboro Park.

I love the name of this park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 23, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played the Blue tees, so this review reflects that layout.

Three sets of tees on each hole gives variety.
There are many painted bricks as guide markers; they took a lot of work to put down.

Cons:

The tee Signs are only round painted paver stones, that are flush to the ground, so the next tees can be hard to spot. You need to use your tracking skills to follow the colored guide bricks that are flush with the ground, especially since the three tees often diverge in 3 different directions.
The tees are not framed, they're just dirt or grass with markers in the front, and some are bumpy.
Several holes need to be cleared more of random trees in the fairway.
There are few amenities: no map, no score cards, no warm up basket, no message board with instructions about the 3 layouts. There are restrooms, though.

Other Thoughts:

Blue tees Course Level: Red (most suited for Juniors and Intermediate players rated 825-875)

The course is short, 1490/ 2085/ 2120 ft., so it's most suited to short throwing players. The Orange layout has a 90 ft hole that is a true CR Par 2. By contrast, hole 9, at 400 ft., is a very long hole for Red level players. There is little length variety (Blue tees: 3 of 150-190/ 5 of 200-290/ 1 of 400).
I thought that the terrain was a little below average. The woods are kind of scruffy.
Although the course is best for short throwers such as juniors, new players, seniors, and some women, it's also mostly in the woods, so less skilled players will also be whacking lots of trees, and that may be frustrating for them.
On the many very short holes you expect to score a 2 and feel like you've lost a throw if you don't.
There are slight elevation changes on most holes (2 Flat/ 2 Up/ 5 Down), but from the blue tee hole 1 has a drop of ~30ft.

A note about my rating: My rating is a subjective measure of my enjoyment of the course, on the day I played it, and it is NOT intended to be a measure of the quality of the course. My ratings are given "on the curve" in relation to all other courses I've played.

Short but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This is a nine hole course with three tees, making it versitile. Each tee box is marked by a trail of bricks from the last hole. The tees are natural. This course is extremely easy to navigate once you find the pattern. The Orange tees are good to introduce players to the game or for juniors/seniors.
There was lots of diversity in the types of holes. All holes are very close to the restrooms and parking lots.

Cons:

This is an extremely short course. This is not for the advanced player. The blue tees will challenge you on a couple of holes. The white and blue tee for hole 1 is not easy to find until you have completed hole 9. The teeing area of most holes are not level.

Other Thoughts:

It would be easier to find the tees if there was a marker above the ground at the tee box.

Short and Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 14, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to navigate, they have bricks painted the color of the tee layed out toward your next tee, as well they have the colors painted in an arrow along the walking trail. No trash. You are never far from your car. They have restrooms and a water fountain. The tees are set up on most holes to give you a completely different throw to the hole, making a 9 hole course into 27. There is a playground for the kids, a nice large horseshoe pit are, and a sand volleyball court. I've never seen more than a few players on the course.

Cons:

Short, will only test distance on the last hole from the blue tee. There are no benches, but there is a shelter to sit under between rounds.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed my rounds here. The orange tees are really short so if you have kids tagging along, or a girlfriend that doesn't play often, they have tees they can play from. I wouldn't recommend driving a long distance to play this course, but if you are in the area to play the beautiful Fox Chase course it is worth stopping to play since Fox is only about 17 or so miles away. I gave this a 2.5 because I really enjoy playing this course when I'm in the area, but it's mainly a midrange and putt course.

Update-As of December a couple of the tees had been moved or in the process of being moved.
