Great Course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good concrete level tees.
Great tee signs with detailed information of distance, par and OB.
Defined maintained fairways where you only end up in rough areas with a really poor shot.
Easy to navigate as the baskets are marked to show where the next tee is.
Great baskets that never allow a spit out if you hit center.
Practice basket by parking lot on a slope so you can practice putting with elevation changes.
Good variety of open and wooded holes.
Variety of challenges with distance and placement/accuracy.

Cons:

High traffic near the water on nice days, but at least there are two other courses in the park to enjoy on those days.
No benches.

Other Thoughts:

No trash cans, but there's no reason you can't carry out your empty containers.

Best of the Codorus Three

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The most varied - and the best - of the three courses at Cordorus

+ Starts out with some park-style holes, fairly open with trees to dodge. Holes #4 and #5 bring the lake into the game (there's no water carry, and the lake is pretty easy to avoid - but the land slopes steeply down to the shore, and a nose up drive on a windy day could be a problem). When you make the transition across the road to hole #8, you're in thicker woods than anywhere else on the three courses, where you remain for the rest of the round

+ The wooded holes are varied themselves. Several of the longer ones (#8, #16, #18) are wide, like roads through the woods. Others are just nasty with trees and narrow gaps. Some left-to-right, some right-to-left shapes. There's some elevation change too - so you're facing a variety of challenges

+ The layout finishes with an excellent 550' par 4: wooded, slightly uphill, and getting narrower on both sides until it opens up with about 120' left, downhill to an open green with rollaway danger. Each of your three shots up to the green has a different challenge: staying straight off the tee, making it through the narrowest part with the second, and risking rollaway on your approach

Cons:

- #7 is the one hole that feels "stuck in." It's a par 4 that's literally stuck in between two parking lots, and if you play the left side of the fairway, you have to throw over a parking lot. It was fine on a deserted October morning, but it would be a lot less fun on a busy summer day

- Beginner-friendly signage that explains scores and the shapes of shots, but they seem to run out of disc golf things to say, and become bland inspirational messaging halfway through the round

Other Thoughts:

~ The wooded holes are particularly good looking, and genuinely challenging golf holes

~ Each of the three Codorus courses is assigned a color (Blue, Purple, Red) and all the amenities are painted to match (signage, baskets, even the posts holding the teesigns). There's never any question which course you're playing

QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE THREE CODORUS STATE PARK COURSES

Blue:
Most "park style" of the three, largely open fairways with trees to dodge. Shortest of the three, although some back tees are available

Purple:
Longest and most open of the three with some long bomber holes early. Lots of elevation change - enjoy watching your discs soar. Layout has some "stuck in'' holes

Red:
Most varied of the three: includes park style, waterside, open, and deep woods. Longer than Blue, shorter than Purple. True wooded back 9.

Good course with variety 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Red Course is definitely more of a challenge than the Purple, with a great start along the lake.
The woods holes are mostly well taken care of
Fun use of picnic tables as hazards (unless people are using them, then they'd be right on the course)
No really weak holes, and the 3 par-4s are all very cool.

Cons:

Can be very muddy on the last few holes
While they have done a good job clearing out a few trees in the woods so most of the holes have a reasonable line, there are still a couple of holes that are heave and hope Plinko-fests.
The rough is very thorny and there's little chance of avoiding it

Other Thoughts:

The Red Course starts out like the Purple, with some relatively open park holes, although they are much closer to the edge of the lake and more difficult especially in the howling wind. 4 is a great par 4 on the lakeshore and then 7 is another interesting par 4 sandwiched in between the asphalt and trees. After #7, the rest of the course is in the woods, with corridors ranging from pretty friendly to tiny gaps no wider than the tee box. A couple of the woods holes are perhaps a little too narrow but it's a fun challenge. #18 is a great par four with a throw out of the woods and finishing with a blind parkland type shot up and over a hill. Lots of variety. They do have a bit of a problem getting from hole to hole though, lots of very muddy paths. I did like how the park uses the trees they remove has big barricade type hazards on some holes. Stay out of those. It was nice getting out of the wind in the woods.

Fun and Challenging 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Codorus State Park-Red Course is a beautiful compliment to its sister, the Blue Course. Played along the peaceful Lake Marburg, the Red course serves as a challenging, well-groomed park-style course for the first eleven holes and then quickly adjusts to deeply wooded fairways with fun lines.

The conditions of the course are excellent in the summer with grass mowed and rough trimmed back. Baskets are in excellent shape and all the tees are large cement pads.

The overall design is well done. A lot of elevation changes add variety and each hole plays just a bit differently from every other hole. The alignment has recently been changed from a 27 hole format (with 9 CC holes) to an 18-hole format, and I think the change is beneficial for the overall playability of the course. Hole lengths have been extended with the change and based upon what I have read in other reviews, the experience seems to have improved.

The variety of throws needed on this course makes for a hole lot of fun. With quite a few bomber-like holes, I could really stretch my arm. But there are many holes that require technical lines: straight, hyzer and anhyzer. I broke out my (mediocre) forehand on a few holes as well as some midranges on the drive in order to make corners. Beginner players beware, could be a long round.

Cons:

Obviously, for upper-tier courses, some amenities are expected: a decent map, descriptive sigs with detailed information about each hole, excellent flow to the design, easy traversability, and pin placements that make sense. This courses misses on these issues.

-The map is older and denotes the old design, before changes were made.

-The tee signs were nothing more than a post with the hole number, length and par listed.

-Though the first few holes flow well, the rest of the course does not seem to follow a "common sense" design. Having to backtrack to find some tees or walk great distances between holes is a regular problem with this course.

-It is not always clear how to get to the next hole from the end of the previous making traversability a challenge (of course, a ew map would help this greatly).

-Lastly, though I did like many of the interesting pin placements, with some in little glades, some near the water with excellent views of the lake, there were some pin placements that were strange. Hole 7 has an island hole (I am not a fan of arbitrary OB). Hole 10 is a 971 foot bomber with a basket down a hill next to the marina when it could have been placed up higher next to some trees, which would have been more accessible and with easier navigation to hole 11. Hole 14 puts a basket right behind some trees with very little opportunity to access the chains off the drive. Challenging? Yes. Niche-y? Also yes.

Other Thoughts:

Being that the first few holes are in a park near a lake, picnickers and other non-disc golfers are around. This means that players will have to wait at times and sometimes have to warn people of their throws. I played on a week day, so there were out many people around. Those that were there were nice enough to let me play through with little problem or waiting. But I could see that the weekends could be tough.

I could easily have given this course a 3.0 or even a 2.5 due to the need for standard amenities like an updated map and better signs, but I really had a lot of fun playing the course. And the "fun" factor overrules most other factors for me. Why else play this beautiful, frustrating game than to have fun, right?

Pros:

From what I saw, it looked like a great setting and well maintained.

Cons:

No signs at the tee box, just a post with yardage and an arrow. The real problem is all the people having a picnic on the fairways and greens. I played #1, couldn't play 2 - 5, played 6, couldn't play 7. Gave up. What a shame.

Other Thoughts:

I'd love to play this course, just doesn't seem possible during the warm months.

Beautiful Course that needs a few minor tweeks 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great elevation change.
Great variety of distances.
Challenging, long holes.
Different types of shots needed on each hole.
Good mix of open fields and woods.
The overall design of the holes are really cool.

Cons:

The only reason I believe this is a 3.5 star is:
the lack of signage
the lack of direction
holes 3 and 4 were completely occupied by other park visitors as they were picnicking right in the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

The Codorus State Park Red Course is a must play for those that love scenery. Working its way through the park while running along the lake provides awesome views.

Open Course and challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This can be a very challenging course despite the open layout. Normally on a full scorecard majority of the players end up taking a stroke penalty for going OB. personally I like the narrow fairways and landing zones. There are some nice Hyzer bomb ops for both RHFH and RHBH players. one hole that i recall here is a sweet double mando hole near the end that forces you to play through a lone grouping of trees.

Cons:

The Map signage is slightly off from holes 4-7 i wanna say. In one case it looks like the teepad and basket icons are off. The arrows under the basket i found to be more helpful. I once got hit by an errant throw from hole 15? while i was teeing off on hole 13. no trashcans anywhere .

Other Thoughts:

The CC holes are intense, i normally wont play them with newer or less skilled players because you will be waiting all day on them! I dont play here much but when i do i make a day trip out of it at minimum, well worth the 80 minute commute from White Marsh MD.

Great Views Of The Lake - Up Close! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Codorus State Park is the large PA state park on the shores of beautiful Lake Marburg. With three courses here, disc golfers could camp, golf and spend time in the lake. What a ideal vacation spot! The lovely rolling terrain, sometimes open, sometimes wooded with awesome views of the lake and marina make for for great terrain for the courses.

The Red Course is the much more wide open cousin of the Blue Course. The Red features many more chances to air it out and show off that big arm of yours. Like the Blue, the Red Course is extremely well maintained as your playing almost entirely on mowed grass lawns.

The extra nine holes are special and really add to the enjoyment here.

I liked # 9. It's like 390' and banked making for a great hole to throw the long roller on.

The view from the top at # 18 is lovely and the throw is semi-fun indeed.

Cons:

# 4 and 5 play right through the beach crowd and sometimes the right move is to just skip over them. I was forced to bypass # 4 as there sun bathers lying right in the way.

I, too, felt that some of the open holes got a boring. I'm not much into throw as far as you can, pick up and throw as far as you can again on an open field.

There are definitely some safety concerns with cars in parking lots and park streets. Be observant for cars on the park's streets before throwing and as for the lots, I just give them a wide berth. I'd rather take an extra stroke than hit someone's car.

Other Thoughts:

I liked Blue better. Combine the best attributes of both and you would have one great course. Or just swap a few holes from each and give each course an extra dose of variety. Or just come play all three counting the Mini, enjoy the lake and have yourself a great day disc golfing here at Codorus State Park in Pennsylvania, USA.

Nicely Contrasts the Blue Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

27 holes of good, challenging disc golf in another beautiful PA State Park. A small shop in the marina sells discs and drinks. Multiple bathrooms are on site. All baskets work well, and there are multiple marked tee off areas for pro and amateur levels of play. Very nice variety- open shots, moderately wooded shots and a couple of very tight tunnel shots. Navigation not bad. Good use of elevation. Scenic views of the marina and lake-views a bit reminiscent of Nockamixon.

Cons:

The biggest con to me is the lack of quality signage. A course of this caliber should absolutely have them, and it would add immeasurably to the playing experience. More navigational arrows would be helpful. Several tee pads starting to show their wear. Wind can absolutely wreak havoc on your round. There is the possibility other park users can get in your way, and errant throws could wind up in a parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Although I am a bigger fan of wooded, technical courses, I actually liked the red course at Codorus better for its variety in both length and layout. Plus, the scenery here on much of the course is wonderful. Though navigation is not terrible, there is actually TOO MUCH here (CC and XC holes in addition to the red and blue courses) for there not to be a quality map on the premises at all times. Codorus Red calls upon you to throw a variety of shots while avoiding the pitfalls (water, wind, rough, parking lots) that can doom your round.

Water and rough off the fairway could come into play but are not oppressive and can be avoided with a sound approach to your game. Though beautiful, Codorus State Park is not an easy drive and is way off the beaten path to and from most places, so be prepared. With 54 total holes plus a mini disc golf curse on the premises, Codorus has plenty to keep you busy.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

As a local I play this course almost 60 times during summer break.
Excellent course for all levels of players.
- Marina shop sits between courses and sells drinks and some of the newer and nicer discs Innova has to offer (I.E. Star, Champion, Blizzard, StarLite, and Rainbow Champion)
- Multiple Tees for Am and Pro
- Holes that require an assortment of throw
- Multiple holes where you can air it out (4, 9, 12, the entire back loop of 5 holes)
- Usually well maintained by Park Maintenance

Cons:

Only a few downsides:
- Lake Holes (4 & 5) can become very windy on summer evenings
- During the summer, hole 4 is very prone to sunbathers and swimmers so watch out
- The wooded holes are host to all kinds of poison so disc hunting can be sketchy

Other Thoughts:

When coupled in with the 18 hole Blue Course, the 9 hole Cross Country Course, and the 9 hole Gold X Course, Codorus could easily be one of the top courses on the east coast. I highly recommend playing, and there are alway locals out to play with. Plus a short drive to the 2 Pinchot Park course in Dover, PA and the Creeping Creek course in Hampstead, MD

Recreational Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

As the other reviews describe, the Red Course is scenic with lovely views of the lake. My wife and played on a perfect sunny day with light wind.

Number #15 is a good long hole with a challenging basket and nice vistas of the marina.

Another pro, the marina sells discs and drinks.

Have a seat on the bench at #17 and admire the view before bombing your drive down #18.

Multiple tees per hole in good shape. Grass was well-cut, there were a good many players out.

Cons:

As hole #4 plays along the lake, there was a family spread out by the basket fishing. We just walked to the next tee.

The two guys behind us made another choice. One threw into the family and the other threw into the lake.

#5 was unplayable with another family having a picnic.

Even with our printed map the signage was questionable so we let the two guys behind us play through on #7.

On #8 the first guy hit a moving car in the parking lot. On #9 BOTH guys hit cars in the parking lot.

The shots are not that tough and the lots were virtually empty, so some bad luck was involved.

My wife and I played them without incident, yet if the lots were full, we would have just skipped those two holes.

A couple sleeping near the basket on #13 meant we skipped that hole too.

Other Thoughts:

The mini disc golf course located by the #1 tee is a must-see.

Overall, very solid course. I would try to get out early to beat the crowds otherwise you will likely be skipping holes like we did due to the people or cars in the way.

Fun course, very scenic with the lake in the distance. TONS of elevation, some challenging up hill throws and some nice long down hill shots.
The course was well maintained, baskets were in good working order.

Cons:

Nothing too serious, a couple of holes where the fairway gets tight and you are throwing near cars and people. This was my first time playing this course and navigation was pretty easy for the most part, only needed to bust out the map a couple of times.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed the Blue Course slightly better, but I prefer a course with more trees and obstacles, the Red Course has more open holes with more elevation. So pick your poison....both will provide you with a good time though.

Nice change of course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Red Course
It does not get any better in terms of scenery while playing the Red course. Grounds very well maintained. Reminded me more of a real golf course. Although the red course is mostly open, the wind conditions can offer challenges like no other course you have played. I played in 20+ mph winds and every shot seemed unpredictable. Good use of elevation changes and well placed baskets near the lake to make the course a joy to play. Most of the holes you can crank up the driver without concerning hitting cars. Tee pads clearly marked, whole signs to next whole extremely helpful, baskets numbered correctly.

Red CC Course
Complete change of course from the Red course that is one tough challenging wooded course. Even though it is heavily wooded there is still a lot of clearing around the hole so it makes it easy to find your disc. Holes are grouped in a cluster so it's not far to walk to the next hole. Equally difficult for left or right handed. Tee markers are different color and clearly marked CC, Great idea.

Cons:

Red Course
I just hate playing near cars, parking lots. Nothing could be worse than a bad throw hitting someone's car and all the aftermath of paying for it. If there is a chance I could hit one then I just simply skip the hole. The red course in particular will be played mostly by beginners who are most likely to hit them. Good thing is that there are only a few holes on the red course where they come into play. Some holes play around roads but you can wait for cars to pass.

Red CC
Hole 3, if you're off course, be very careful you don't poke your eye out. It would be nice if someone could trim off some of those lower dead branches on the pines. Need a path or more direction arrows going from 3 to 4th hole. Baskets little bit hard to locate if playing the first time.

Other Thoughts:

It's a very open course but I think it is a nice change of course that you just don't get with the rest of the 36 holes. Defiantly makes you consider caring heaver or more wind resistant disc in your bag! I would advise playing the red course early in the morning before more cars arrive. I drove up from Annapolis, MD to play Codorus and it was well worth the drive. I will be back!

Give me 9 CC's of extra disc golf holes! Stat! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great views of the lake the rest of the park! I love how some of the holes have the lake in play. These water hazards definitely mess with your head.

- Nice tee variety with the am and pro tees; signage, teepads, and baskets are all in good condition.

- A great place to air our your discs, although this can get boring after awhile (see cons)

- #14 is my favorite hole. The double mando really requires focus and concentration -- not to mention dodging a buinch of trees. Once you clear the tight mando, you still have a good distance to the basket. Fantastic!

- As I said in my cons, the first 18 are somewhat redundant and lack any idiosyncrasy. However, the last nine holes (CC1-9) are phenomenal! No hold is alike, and you must contend with ultra-tight wooded pines, the lake, 90-degree doglegs, thick brush, and a cemetery! These are some of the best holes I've played on any course and it's a shame there's only nine of them. These really help bump up the Red Course and make it a must-play.

Cons:

The first 18 holes are nothing to write home about. Few, if any, are memorable ones. It's just a lot of drives up and down hills with few obstacles in the way.

- I'm not a big fan of the criss-crossing nature of the holes from 10-13. I can see interruptions happening on these holes when it's busy.

- Some holes play very close to the parking lot and walkways. Mandos are in place to discourage you from throwing, but the likelihood is still high. Take #15, for instance. It plays pretty close to a road and parking lot, and one of my valkyires almost hit a car parked there. Yikes!

- Not a whole lot in terms of technical/wooded holes or extreme doglegs. I'd like to take some from the Blue Course and transplant it here!

- Windy! Playing here versus the blue course is like night and day in this regard. Make sure to pack an overstable disc like a firebird or a wasp to compensate for this factor.

Other Thoughts:

Codorus Red would be a 2.5 without the CC holes, but they're so fantastic that they really bump up the course's fun and beauty factor! All in all, with the CC holes, nice views of the lake, great amenities, and 27 chances to smack chains, it's a great disc golf experience.

Make a day trip out of it and play all 54! Plus the mini holes!

Tournament Layout 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I want to immediately point out that I played this course twice now in it's tournament layout which is 20 holes (they combine some of the aforementioned boring holes) and plays extremly differently than what some of the previous reviewers experienced.

Great variety of holes. First you have the obvious differnce between the CC holes and the standard 18. The CC have tight, wooded fairways, and if you play from the pro tee's some of these holes are legitimate apr 4's. The standard 18 are wide open and play amongst alot of roads and parking lots which offer plenty of OB opportunities. Both courses though use plenty of elevation, up, down and across hills. Also the standard 18 course really takes advantage of some really nice pin positions. They are located near OB or on slopes that give you a pause (especially hole #15's pin, Yowza it is steep behind the pin).

The park itself is fantastic. A Marina, 54 disc golf holes, bathrooms, water fountains, and an awesome 9 hole mini course that I absolutely love! The standard 18 offers great views of the lake (but don't go in) and even the CC holes bring some water into play on holes 5 and 7. Also there are restaurants gas station ect. close to the course.

The course is well maintained. The standard 18 appears to be mowed often and the CC courses were well groomed.

Cons:

I can;t recall any seating being available at any of the Tee's on the course which is always a con on a long 27 hole course.

The rubber tee's are very narrow and can be slippery when wet. Also a few of the tee's on the CC holes are somewhat uneven.

Signage is pretty poor. Just a marker stick with Hole number and distance. The course is easy to follow though.

I am very much against holes that need to use mando's to keep areas safe. There are some holes on this 27 hole course that would benefit from some minor redesign to avoid needing the mando's

Other Thoughts:

Now I mentioned previously that I played the tournament layout instead of the standard 18. From what I was able to see the tourney layout is awesome compared to the normal layout so you might want to try it. We played holes (all from pro tee) 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5 8 to 9's basket, 10 as an Island green, 12 to 13's basket, 15 using the long tee and alt pin, and 17 to 18's basket then all of the CC holes. Some of these combo holes take very drab, boring 250 ftholes and makes them into very difficult 600 - 800 footers especially with wind off the lake and tons of out of bounds around. Very cool setup.

I really enjoy playing all the Codorus courses and all of the local guys that I have played with have been super cool and helpful. I would love to call this my home course, because between the 54 holes and different layouts I would find it difficult to become bored with.

This is a great place to bring your family also. There are great campsites available a massive swimming pool, boat rental Gettysburg nearby and tons of other amenaties.

Good course to just let it fly without two many worries of trees. Hole 4 has an amazing view of the lake and you could easily end up in the drink if your disc floats left. Good course to work on drives without to much worry of losing a disc.

Cons:

The back nine get boring. I am not a fan of open holes, I like being in the woods. Also a few holes along the lake bring many people just lounging in the middle of the fairway, then they act surprise when a disc lands near them. Also on nice days expect to wait for kids running across the fairway near the picnic areas. Like I said the CC holes are the best part of this course and often I only play those nine.

Other Thoughts:

Play early morning or overcast days when there will be less tourists. The course is near the marina where you can buy discs or drinks and such, so that is always a nice feature.
