Yea, this one has been raided and ransacked 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are baskets.
The course is pretty much wide open, but there are places to lose discs.
Largely unused portion of campus, except it's right between the Football stadium and their workout facility. Watch out for those guys.

Cons:

#4 basket was missing when I was there.
Tee signs on #1 and 2, and a tee for #2, and that's where they end.
Several of the baskets were leaning and/or had rusty chains.
Drainage ditch on #2 and two ponds on course have serious disc loss potential.

Other Thoughts:

Pretty basic campus course on a wide open part of the campus that probably doesn't get too much foot traffic. Its looks like it was a decent campus course when installed back in 2008, but I don't think anything has been done to it since then, except for grass cutting.

The terrain let's you really let the discs fly, so the designer created some challenge with the basket locations. #2 is right near a drainage ditch, #3 is right next to (actually in) a cluster of 2 or 3 bushes, #6 is in a clump of trees, and #7 is in the edge of a treeline. #3 made it impossible to play unless you were right in front of the basket. #6 is pretty cool, one nicely guarded basket.

There's a large pond and small pond on the property, it looks like #4 basket used to be very near the large one, #5 plays along side it and #7 crosses the small pond, but the risk can be mitigated by making the hole shorter. All of those are pretty easy to spot, I was caught off guard on #2, you can see the small amount of water in the ditch by the basket, when looking from the tee, but you can't see the hidden drain (and water) midway down the fairway. I threw my second drive in there and thought it was gone. Came back later after #9 and spotted it in shallow water, another disc recovery!!

I don't imagine this course gets a lot of play, especially after Wannamaker opened up less than a mile away. That's too bad really, with a little upkeep of the baskets, some kind of tee markers and a little redesign, this would be the perfect compliment to the heavily wooded Wannamaker.

Not worth the time! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Nicely kept greens with easy naviagtion.
*Very short distances for easy ace and birdies
*Baskets are all in good shape.

Cons:

*No challenge for my skill level. It is a pitch and putt.
*Private and the security is a little too hot-tempered with outsiders. Not worth the time trying to sneak on.
*Too crowded with mindless people unaware they are even on a disc golf course.

Other Thoughts:

If you are just wanting to say you play it, then enjoy. If you are wanting a challenge, go to Park Circle or Trophy Lakes which are way better.

Easy Beginners' Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nine holes are available in a surprisingly scenic area. Holes 5-9 play near and around a very pretty pond area - I guess it is called "Alligator Alley."

All Discatcher baskets.

Clearly definied tee markers with signs and distances with a kiosk/map on hole 1 to easily mark the start of the course.

Easy navigation and relatively easy gameplay makes for a good course to introduce beginners to the sport.

Course designer did a fairly good job of keeping the holes from being too monotonous given the sparce amount of available land used in the course.

The drainage ditches are used very nicely on holes 2-4 to make for some reasonable difficulty and risk-reward shots around the greens.

Hole 7 is a really pretty throw (from the back tee) across the water and bridge which is actually one of the prettiest holes in the Charleston area.

Good use of the very minimal foliage to create a few guarded baskets on 3,5-6, and 8.

Cons:

It is private and reportedly only open to CSU students.

Par is very inflated. Most of these holes should be par 3 max, with the possible exception of 7 from the back tee.

Few of the hole signs are missing which made navigation to that particular tee a bit difficult, but the 4x4 posts are still intact so that helped.

Hole 1 is poorly designed, basically playing straight up a maintenance road. The road just left of the basket on 2 also seems fairly busy. Sidewalk and athletics building are also in play on 9 which creates opportunity for interference.

For a beginner course, there is a fair amount of water in play and disc loss potential.

For as fun as hole 7 was, the rest of the course, even with some tough putts, was fairly bland and forgettable.

Other Thoughts:

I wish this course was not private. I've heard the security officers are pretty aggressive about kicking people out. Though this isn't by any means a destination course, it is the only course available within about a 15-20 minute drive and it would be nice for people in the area to be able to drop by after work. I can definitely understand the school's reluctance though given their reportedly tough alcohol policies, etc.

It is definitely not worth trying to sneak on this course if you are not a member of the CSU community, but if you do have access or have a friend that does and is willing to bring you as a guest, it is worth the occasional visit.

Not worth it... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice campus

Cons:

Out of the nine holes, only 6 are playable (missing hole #1 & 9 due to construction and hole #2 due to lack of a basket). First time I played I managed to go an entire round (all 6 holes) but the second time I got asked to leave after my second throw by the security guard lady. Most holes were missing the signs as well.

Other Thoughts:

Summary: Don't bother wasting your time trying to sneak onto this course. There are much better courses in the area.

Not a bad course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is good for those who are learning or who want to work on their short game.

Cons:

Missing signs and a nice size gator lives in the pond. The grass around some holes needs to be cut, but it might be better maintained during the school year.

Other Thoughts:

Don't use a good disc on hole 7 unless you feel like being gator food!

"Touring the campus" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

A good starter course is all that this place is, a place to get your feet wet if you've never played before. A nice location for a little pitch and putt. Hole 7 is a bit challenging if you're going to try to cross the water to be on the green in one throw, otherwise it's two mid ranges and a putt. Clean, well maintained, and reasonably well signed except for hole 7, look past the bridge between the two ponds, pin is on the left.

Cons:

Pars are too high, I threw a -6 which for me is incredible on any other course. Secret password required to get on the course to begin with! If you're only in town for a short time, this course can be skipped, although it is a nice little walk. As a New England golfer, too many wide open shots for me.

Other Thoughts:

First round I played here, the security guard asked me what I was doing here, I told her I wanted to play disc golf at their course. After a funny look, she said that she couldn't let me in unless I had business there, was a student, or wanted to "tour the campus." That sounded much more fun than a round so I said that was why I was there! Do yourself a favor and rather than try to explain what disc golf is for the ten millionth time to someone who doesn't care, tell them you are there to tour the campus. She did take my drivers' license and plate # but I got in and played a quick round with no problem.

Pros:

Wide open drives.

Cons:

Water on a few holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a fun quick play. But I think it builds a false confidence in some newer players. Some of the holes have a par that is too high. My crew and I do realy enjoy playing it when we're looking for a fun, not too competitive round.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 28, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great location for a course. Nice, clean scenery playing around the lake.
- Easy course to navigate. Good tee signs.
- Easy course, except for 7, with plenty of birdie chances.
- Playing around the lake reminded me of a mini-Winthrop Lakefront, all the way down to mini/shorter holes.
- Water really only comes in to play on #7. There's a "creek" about 1 foot deep that runs in front of the baskets for #2 - 4. The basket for #5 is near the water, but you'd really have to pull a throw for it to come close.
- There are also several ball golf greens throughout the course, so you can get your fix of both types of golf in one stop.

Cons:

There is only one real challenging hole on the whole course. #7 is a 400 ft hole over water, and that even has an alternate tee to make it easier.
- With 2 long holes, #7 & 9 and all other hole being short and/or easy, it makes you wonder who they're trying to appeal to. The casual player will struggle on the 2 long holes, better players will be bored with all other holes.
- The course probably gets crowded with students lounging around the lake during the school year.

Other Thoughts:

Course is listed as private because it's on a college campus. I parked in the lot near the football stadium and had no problem playing.
-It's always a good thing when colleges have disc golf courses. Best way to get people hooked on the game.
- There seems to be a lot of room around the football stadium and practice field to add another 9 holes, or at least make the current course more challenging.
- This is the easiest 9 hole course in Charleston, but it gets a higher mark than the Naval Station because of the scenery, ground conditions and location.
