5 Years Since Last Review 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Close to town with plenty of places to eat and shop. The Dunham's in town had about 30 discs and a couple bags.

4 holes are mostly flat, 3 play uphill, and 2 play WAY down hill. The course is mostly open with scattered trees. The trees, basket locations, sidewalks, stone wall, and tennis courts provide obstacles and limit/guide tee shot options on 6 holes. The other 3 holes will allow you basically whatever option you want off of the tee.

Cons:

There is no signage and if the tee markers are still there, I couldn't find any of them. So for all of the grass tee areas I just had to guess based upon the map. Five tees are on stone pavers or concrete so they have a better idea of the tee locations, even without any sort of markings.

Basket #5 is missing. One other basket is badly bent. The rest are old, rusty, single chain Insteps. They serve the purpose. That's it. I have Insteps on two courses that I installed and I added a 2nd set of chains. They don't catch great, but they do catch OK. Without the extra chains, putts will easily and frequently blow through the chains.

The low lying areas are very soft and wet. This appears to be an ongoing issue and it seems that there would have to be no rain for weeks for this to change.

The big downhill throws, basket placements on several holes, and closeness of the holes distinctly bring the sidewalk, tennis courts, and adjacent holes into play. The campus was basically empty when I played so this wasn't an issue for me. But when school is in session this could be a major issue considering that the two downhill bombers play right over the sidewalk. On the map the sidewalk is OB. Making the sidewalk OB on 400'+ downhill throws seems silly to me.

Other Thoughts:

I don't normally do a hole by hole "play by play" in my reviews, but it seems appropriate in this case for some reason.

Hole #1 is "tunnel-like" to start. You have to hit a gap in-between two trees and the stone wall and road on the right give you something to think about. Once through the trees it completely opens up.

#2 plays up and onto a "shelf" which makes it interesting.

#3 is a simple uphill right turner.

#4 is the 1st downhill bomber with the basket tucked into a small alcove in some trees. This is a very fun hole... without pedestrian traffic.

#5 would have been a wide open, short, straight throw if the basket hadn't been missing. I took a 2 on this imaginary hole. LOL.

#6 is a wide open bomb all of the way back up the hill you threw down on #4.

#7 is the other big downhill throw. It is also quite fun, but also scary since the basket is about 10' from the tennis courts, tucked in-between two sets of bleachers. I had to be close to a 500' throw on this one as my tee shot only left me about 100' short of the pin. :)

#8 might be a cool hole as the basket is in the middle of a bunch of large trees that you have to navigate to get there. Unfortunately, not knowing where the tee is and playing safari left me wanting.

#9, again, left me wanting as it was another Safari hole. It's mostly open to start, I think. Then the fairway/approach comes to a bottleneck in-between some trees and the tennis courts. I don't like that you have to make a long throw right at the tennis courts to get close to the pin, regardless of the tee location.

Would I go back? In the courses current state, no. If they added legit tee markers and replaced the missing basket, quite possibly. With major improvements to the navigation, tees, baskets, and safety this course could easily move to a 2.5 rating.

If you are desperate to bag a course, this one will waste your time while you figure out where to throw from, but it shouldn't waste your time while actually playing the holes. Sure, some of the holes are just filler, but some are really fun.

Hopefully this proves useful to someone. Be well and throw straight (when you need to). Jim

It's disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is located on the campus of Davis & Elkins College in beautiful Elkins, WV. Course makes good use of elevation and 2 of the 9 holes throw from the top of the hill. Holes are long enough to be challenging and not easy birdies.

Cons:

Navigation is difficult. I copied the map from this site onto my phone and was able to find all the tees but with out the map I would have been screwed.

Targets are old Instep baskets with single chains.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't have gone out of my way to play this course but since I was passing through Elkins I stopped for a quick round. Bring a map, you'll need it.

The Swamp 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a lot of repeats of previous reviews, so I'll keep it succinct: beautiful campus, good eats close by, beautiful campus.

Cons:

Tees are very hard to find. The bottom, flat area is wet and swamp-like a lot of the time. It's a short course. The campus can be busy with activity, which would hinder play. Two of the baskets are close to the tennis courts, which were occupied on the day that I played.

Good potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

I agree completely w the other reviews here. There is good terrain for disc golf and it's a beautiful campus. Also agree that it is hard to navigate the course. Only difference I have to add, is that the baskets are now numbered and there are marked areas to tee from. They aren't obvious by any means, but there are small wooden plaques in the ground indicating the tees. I didn't find them all, but I found a few. The first tee is when you first come onto campus on the left. The first basket you see is the #9 basket. The first basket is on the corner before you pull left up the hill. The course goes in a counterclockwise circle in front of the school. I originally only saw 7 baskets but found the other two. The 4th and 5th baskets are down beside the stage by the tennis court. I agree this course would be muh better if it had obvious Rees and directions but it has good potential for sure! Playing safari would be great here as well considering you can see multiple baskets from one place. Not worth traveling to, but I'd you are in the area, kind of fun to play around on

Surprisingly Decent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 25, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Recently updated and is now an actual course! (no more safari)
-Has wooden block tee markers.
-A full nine baskets that are numbered.
-Uses the elevation nicely (with two huge downhill bombs).
-A couple long shots.

Cons:

-Tee markers are incredibly hard to find your first time.
-Baskets are still old and rusted with only one layer of chains.

Other Thoughts:

I'm super glad they put in tee markers and the missing baskets. Sure, it's not great, but not a bad 9 hole course (especially once you know where the tees are).

In case you still have trouble finding some of the tees, maybe this can help.
#1 - Down the old stone wall from basket 1.
#2 - From the circular cement pad with benches.
#3 - From the stone walkway just past basket 2.
#4 - From the cement walkway/top of steps at the very top of the hill.
#5 - From the big cement ampitheater.
#6 - Off to the right of basket 5.
#7 - From the cement walkway/top of steps at the very top of the hill (same as #4).
#8 - Past basket 7 near the corner of the fence.
#9 - To the right of the entrance to the trees from fairway 8.

Safari Course in the Mountaineer State 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course--at least one time or another--played along the front lawn of Davis & Elkins College in rural central West Virginia. The baskets are still there, but, like some kind of archaeological mystery, no signage or tees remain! As such, I found myself playing safari disc golf here to compensate for the lack of signage or a map. School was also not in session. Pros to the course include:

- The course has baskets! Woo hoo! Although these have seen better days. (see cons section)

- Nice elevation for a college campus course. Normally these types of courses (except IUP's College Lodge) are pretty flat. Three of the baskets play along a nicely manicured hillside and could utilize some nice air if the tees were in place

- The place is beginner friendly and a fun place to play safari-- because it's the only way here!

- Course plays on a scenic and historic campus. If I went to school here I'd totally fix it up and try to start a disc golf community among the students.

Cons:

- LACK OF TEES AND SIGNS! This obviously makes it hard to play (& review) the course. It looks like the course has been abandoned for years.

- The baskets are ridiculously old, have only one set of chains, and some are rusted. One basket is snapped in half (see photo). I can see some tough drunk college kid breaking it on a dare.

- Very open with little in terms of wooded holes or any type of obstacles/challenge

- Baskets are close together, which suggests that the holes were probably pretty short. This isn't surprising since the campus doesn't have a whole lot of land with which to work.

- The baskets play very close to tennis courts, buildings, and the road. I had to layup several times to avoid hitting these things

- It's only 9 holes. Well, there's the potential for 9 holes.

- As you can imagine from the rest of the cons, navigation is terrible and provides no clue as to where the course begins/ends.

Other Thoughts:

- I drove about 30 miles here after camping near Seneca rocks, WV. While Elkins as a town has amenities like food and lodging, it's still in the middle of nowhere. It's a shame there aren't more courses around the area since the Cannan/Seneca valleys are popular tourist/camping/recreation retreats. I can easily see a nice course by one of the campgrounds or resorts nearby-- anything as long as it has tees!

- I'm starting to see why no one has reviewed this place. while I was a little disappointed with the lack of tees and thus, a true course, the 30 mile drive was not a complete waste. It's a nice safari outing if you're nearby, but save your gas and time for Paw Paw or Fairmont for 36 holes of quality disc golf per location.

- The reason this gets a 1 and not a 0-0.5 is that the course is somewhat enjoyable. The campus is quite beautiful with the landscape/buildings and the elevation on some holes is a redeeming quality. With that being said, however, Elkins & Davis is incomplete. The place has no tees, signs, or any indication of where you're supposed to play. Furthermore, only 8 of the 9 baskets are operative, as one is snapped in half. If the tees were in, marked well, and new baskets were installed, this would probably be at least a 2-2.5 course depending on the tee placement.
