A Short 9 That's Ideal For Beginning Players 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 31, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Roxana City Park hosts a recreation 9-hole disc golf course that snakes around other park uses and paths. This course is geared towards beginner to intermediate players, with two tee pads on each hole to provide some variety with distances.

Location of the park is on the southeast side of town, with route 255 to route 143 being the primary way to get to this course. When accessing this course, make sure you take the entrance at Park Dr. next to the junior high school, as GPS may take you to a different parking lot. When driving around the one-way drive, look for signage to the disc golf course on the right-hand side before you pass the Rox Arena. There's a side parking lot where you can access some shelters as well as hole 1 a little more easily. Roxana has a good amount of food and gas options if you need them. This course is also one of 7 between Edwardsville and Godfrey, so if you're making a day out of bagging, this north area of the St. Louis metro east has plenty to offer.

Park Amenities are plentiful in this park, including a playground, multiple ball fields, basketball, volleyball, and a community pool. There's also the Rox Arena, which seems to be more of a rec center. There are multiple rentable shelters on site as well. There was a port-a-john by hole 8 in the northwest corner of the park, and there are also some water fountains around. It looks like there are multiple annual events at this park, including Christmas lights, so be mindful of that when planning to play here.

Course Equipment is fairly basic here but covers the needs of the course. The DISCatcher baskets on site are all in great shape. Each hole has two tees that are mainly just gravel, which actually wasn't bad to throw off of. The tee signs have hole numbers, pars, and distances for the beginner and intermediate tees. If you're needing discs or are a community member wanting to try the course out, the office apparently has discs available to lend out.

Course Design is fairly straightforward at Roxana, with the course comprising of mainly straight shots that will be between 200 and 300 feet from the short tees and between 300 and 400 feet from the long tees, with some exceptions. While there are some spots where there's a little shot shaping to be had or obstacles to navigate, you will likely be able to throw your preferred shot type off the tee on most holes without much in the fairway to worry about. Hole 7 and 8 look like they were redesigned at some point based on the older map on this website, and 7 probably has the best shot shaping on site now with RHBH players needing more of a hyzer around the trees and branches to the left. Hole 9 also serves as a nice finishing hole with the elevated basket and pavers adding a nice touch.

Course Difficulty is clearly geared towards newer players and locals wanting to try disc golf out. In this regard, the course achieves its goal, providing a relatively easy round for beginners to learn the game with longer tees providing a little more challenge to more experienced players.

Cons:

Course Design makes the most out of the available land around the park. That being said, there's not a lot worth writing home about. Most of the shots are straight on, with no fairways that are truly going to challenge you to throw a certain way off the tee with the exception of maybe hole 7. Holes 1 and 9 provide a little challenge at the basket with either elevation or guardian trees, but that's really the extent of notable moments in the design here. The park is also completely flat, so with the exception of a come-back putt on 5, there's truly no elevation changes to be found here. The course made for a nice quick half hour round, but the replay-ability factor isn't high here.

Safety could be a concern on a number of holes here, especially seeing as this course favors newer players in its design and distances. Most holes play close to walkways or parking lots, which could be problematic in warmer seasons. Hole 5 basically plays over a bridge and sitting area, which is less than ideal. Hole 6's pin was also just over a primary path from a parking lot, with said parking lot also being close to the fairway. Hole 8's fairway plays over the edge of another parking lot, with a port-a-john being within the firing line of drives. If you happen to be having trouble dropping your kids off at this particular pool, I can think of one way to help scare them out.

Please be mindful of other park uses and pedestrians before chucking your plastic.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Roxana's disc golf course is a nice amenity for the locals, but not really worth going out of your way for unless you're into bagging new courses. There are plenty of other great courses not far from here, including La Vista, Sioux Passage, and Woodland Chains. If you want to make a day out of bagging courses though, this is a great area to hit up, with 7 courses all in a line down 255 for the most part. If you're passing by and want a quick round, this is the course for you. Just be mindful of folks in the port-a-john.

Great Course to Warm Up On. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Like my title says, it's a great little 9-hole course to go play and wake your throw up before you play anything important.
Not that long, so you can play the whole course in about a half hour.
You can play the short tees for the first lap, then play the long tees the second time around and it's almost like a different course.

Cons:

Very short.
Located in a park with several baseball and teeball diamonds, so whenever a local team is playing, holes 7 and 8 will be crowded to the point of being unplayable.
Also located next to a middle school that lets their kids play the course for their gym, which is commendable, but if you go there during school hours, chances are you will have to play around kids who are walking the course so they don't have to be really active.

Other Thoughts:

I like the course on the whole. It's a fun, easy course that I have taken my wife, father, and father-in-law to to teach them how to play, as it doesn't offer too many holes that would be discouraging to a new player.

Enjoyable Throw In A Flat City Park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course sits in a small mostly flat area of a larger community park wedged in between the community center, an elementary school and a ball field. There are plenty of scattered trees to provide some obstacles to throw around. At the beginning is a course rules sign as well as a empty kiosk. The signs are small metal ones with the basic needed information. The tees are natural but they do have a front board. And the front board has the hole # on it. The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow band and the small numbers on them.

There are both beginner and intermediate tees. I would say the course plays as a fun little pitch and putt from the beginner tees and as a recreational level from the intermediate tees. For example, # 1 is 198' from the Beginners and 306' from the Intermediate tees.

# 7 is the signature hole here. Your throwing down between an alley of trees maybe 40 feet apart. The hole is 245' from the beginner tee and 343' from the back tee. Keeping your drive straight for that long is fairly tough.

# 9 is 219'/312' straight down to a slightly elevated basket.

Cons:

I would be concerned with # 7 throwing from the intermediate tee psd when there is a ballgame in progress. There isn't much room for error there.

There isn't much else wrong with this little course. I think it's just a nice, little basic park course. Good for families, beginners, casual play.

Other Thoughts:

This is a perfect little course for us course baggers. It's easy to get to. Easy parking. Takes 20 minutes to play. Flat and easy! No sweat! No mess! In & out. Wham Bam! Thank you Mamn!

Visions of Dancing Unicorns at Night 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Amenities. Large City park with Ball fields, a Pool, shelters, trails, and plenty of parking (though it may be crowded if an event happens to be going on).

Clean and Well Kept. Garbage cans sporadically through the park and regular maintenance keep the park looking good and well manicured.

Ace/Birdie Opportunities. Every hole is reachable in one, so this is a good place to work on approaches and mild technical lines.

Navigation. Pretty straightforward when you find hole 1, I didn't struggle finding my way around at all.

Tees. Dual Tee pads, Marked by Red/Blue Toe Stones and a sign that shows Hole #, Distance, and par. Natural tee pads suit this course fine as I feel concrete would be wasted overkill here.

Baskets. Disccatchers, all in good shape, they all exist and work as expected.

Local Scene. A local league is held here on Saturdays.

Access. Near 255 for a quick stop.

Cons:

Variety. Most every hole is less than 300 feet and mostly open. There are several large trees that add some challenge.

Other User Areas. Hole 2 plays near a building, a drive that gets away from you on hole 5 could end up on the other side of the fence in the elementary school playground (I had to jump the fence, I don't think this is recommended), Hole 6 plays near a gazebo, could be trouble if people were using it, and Hole 8 basket is quite close to a house.

Not Beginner Friendly. Sure, the holes and layout are great for beginners, but for the reasons mentioned above, someone that doesn't have control over their drives could easily injure a small child or put a disc through a window. I wouldn't recommend this course to someone trying to learn the game.

Wet. I only note this because it has been in other reviews, Hole 2 had a couple of inches of water on it. The course does not drain well.

Other Thoughts:

I would not recommend this course. If you're passing by bagging courses, or if you're a local, it's a course. A small course with minor challenges, shouldn't take but about half an hour.

Pros:

Well cared for park with 9 holes, 2 tees per hole. Has signs and brick work to mark tees. Despite being flat, use of trees makes some holes harder. Short holes make for a good learning course with varying shots.

Cons:

With the 2 tees per hole you can play a round of 18. The 2nd tees do offer a different look to the course, but not enough. Mulching or concrete tees would be nice as some tee boxes can be pretty muddy with rain. Also plays close to playground on Hole 2, could be problem on busier days.

Other Thoughts:

Almost too clean of a park. I now have silver paint on a couple discs, someone had recently painted the chains on baskets.

Flat easy 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a flat city park. Most of the park is grassy with scattered mature trees, and a few more open grassy areas. Most of the holes have enough trees that they aren't just straightforward easy shots. The shorts offer good distances for newer players, and the longs offer some longer shots with a little more challenge. The tees are natural but are marked with bricks in the ground and easy to find. Both sets of tees have basic signage with hole length, and the park is open enough that the lack of hole maps is trivial. The baskets are in decent shape and catch ok.

Cons:

The park is very flat, and there's no danger for errant shots. That makes it pretty repetitive, and not very challenging, even from the back tees. The tees are natural, and are pretty rutted out. They don't provide great spots to tee from, and the erosion is spreading where it looks like people have teed off around the original tee area. A couple signs are missing, making those tees a little hard to find since they are at ground level. A couple spots are a little odd in terms of navigation, though a little looking and you'll figure it out. A park road comes into play and could be a little bit of a safety issue.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a good beginner course from the short tees, with no real trouble but enough trees to make newer players try some different shots. Even from the back tees, there's not enough challenge or variety to keep more experienced throwers entertained. It's an ok warm up to nearby Rockspring Park, but not really worth much of a trip on it's own.

Pros:

Very well maintained course.

The stone work on the tee pads (both red and white) were nice.

Signage was great.

Cons:

Level course, not a lot of variety.

9 holer.

There was some sand pit or something that was a lake on one hole. Looked wierd, but we didn't play it out of bounds because there was sand and not water in it, but a very nice bridge spanned it.

Other Thoughts:

Not a lot to say about it. We played 3 courses that day, this being the second. I was very suprised with how nice the course was, a lot better than expected. I wouldn't go out of my way to play it though unless I was playing another course in the area (rock springs or collinsville).

It was a lot of fun. Great for beginners.

good beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-good, easy to follow layout
-decent pin placement with guarded pins and some OB in play, especially on 4 and 6 (walking paths)
-two pin placement makes for a more challenging course from the long tees.
-Long tees not only add distance, but also change throwing lanes

Cons:

-no real variation in hole length (all 300-400 ft from the longs)
-holes are somewhat repetitive because of lack of elevation and lack of variety of hole length
-long tee on hole 2 and the pin for 9 were flooded, although it hadn't rained for 3 days (but a lot of rain before that)
-natural tee pads
-it was unclear how to get to the parking lot from the main park (lack of park signage).

Other Thoughts:

Fun little city park course in an industrial refinery town. The pond must have been dry because I didn't see it when I played. I would play again as a warm up to Rockspring in Alton if I had time.

Cons:

It's a small park. We went early in the day and it was empty but it could be tough to play with more people around. Shots are very close to a pavilion and ball diamond.

Beautiful sunny day of play. Just enough wind to make it challenging.

New course and good to practice at. Not a big challenge but is still fun.

Other Thoughts:

I work at this park on the maintenance crew. Course is still being developed and will continue to improve.

-Information kiosk is coming soon
-Bathrooms are on northside of Rox Arena.
-Scorecards available in Rox Arena and map is on them. These will be moved to kiosk when installed.
-Leagues are being developed for adults and beginners.
-Looking into changes with the teepads.

Just thought I'd share this info with everyone.

Not Worth the Trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has a sign to mark the access road to get back to golfer parking area.

Decent amount of trash cans at the pavillions that dot the front half of the course.

A water fountain between holes 4 & 5.

Easy access from Highway 255.

Baskets are in good shape and easy to find.

.......and that's about it.

Cons:

When coming from the north, there's no sign ot point you towards the park (but there is one when coming from the south, rather weird).

No signanage to designate the golfer/pavillion parking area (just signs saying 'Don't Park on the Grass'), but in all fairness one can figure that out on their own.

No sign to point you towards the first tee.

No kiosk/golfer info area, and likewise no place to store scorecards, had they even been provided.

"Tees" are simply grass (more mud than grass) with a strip of bricks to mark off the front of the box. 50 bucks worth of gravel from Home Depot would do wonders.

I couldn't even find hole 7's bricks, but more importantly, where are the pro pads??? The signs provided marked off distances for both amateur and pro tees (actually labeled intermediate), but where the pro 'pads' are is anyone's guess.

No signs to point you towards the next tee; which in a course this small, isn't really a problem, except for the hole 3 to hole 4 transition.

No maps on the tee signs, but again, the course is so short it's relatively easy to find the correct pin.

Where's the bathroom(s)?

No elevation change at all, and the few trees and one road that intersects the course are hardly a challenge to get around.

No variety to the shots. 7 of the 9 holes are dead ahead, the other two are mild RHBH anhyzers.

Other Thoughts:

A nice, quiet park to bring out the little ones or introduce noobs to the game, but that's about all the purpose this course serves.

Intermediate/advanced players will see this course as nothing but 9 ace runs in a row; very boring.

Rockspring Park is only ~6 miles away, and is leaps and bounds ahead of Roxana; much more worthy of your time.
