Moab is beautiful

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course Infrastructure:

Reading some of the older reviews there were reports of bad signage and navigation issues which I did not experience at all. Looks like brand new tee signs which have all of the required information and then some. Every single sign had the course map on it which I thought was very handy. It honestly didn't need it because there are next tee signs as posts in the ground and also stickers on the inside pole on the basket directing you to the next tee sign. Even some of the longer walks between holes and across the street from each other were super easy to figure out. Some of the baskets look like they have been around since 2008 when the course was established and these are in fine shape. There are quite few newer baskets here though that obviously have retired/replaced the worn out ones. Tee pads are all concrete and do the job just fine. Since this is a desert and there is sand and dirt around some of these tee pads there are a few brooms out here. Also there are benches at every tee pads and the tee signs have bag hangers on the back of them.

Topography and terrain:

This is where the course is interesting for me at least. I have played only a few courses in the desert and every time I do it's a lot of fun. Your main obstacles starting out are bushes and shrubs, mostly juniper trees. When you get across the street for holes 7-9 you get grass and lots of trees, it looks more like a forest than desert but only for this stretch. There are many what I would call mini top of the world shots here a few of them throwing over gulches and dropping down quite a bit with junipers making you throw higher than you may want to. Loved hole 13 that was this way while also have the basket on top of a rocky outcrop, very fun. A nice variety of sand, dirt, rocks, and grass greet you and your disc here.

Aesthetics:

You get all of the amazing views of the surrounding red, vertical rock walls that you get from town but here you're a bit more elevated and have less things in your view. Having those benches at the tee pad were really nice for the sake of me wanting to sit down and admire the view at every hole. There is a few streets and one you have to cross on the course that are more for locals and are quiet. If you want a course to get away from all of the tourists in town this place does the job.

Course overview:

There is a good amount of variety of left to right and right to left and the variety in green types and elevation make this course especially fun. The only kind of shot here you won't throw is probably a roller. Although the distance variety is lacking (more on that later) I still found myself having fun on every hole, even similar ones. A lot of the holes here require slightly more distance than I have to get to circle1 but still found myself finding better lines and landing zones, too bad it was mostly after I threw! Even though many par 3 holes here I couldn't reach in one, I still enjoyed them. This is the kind of course that shows itself to you over time the more you play it. Sadly as a course bagger and not a local I didn't get to learn this course in such a way.

Cons:

Not much distance variety:

Many holes here required the same sort of distance. If you can throw 320-360 feet this is a great course to challenge you on at least for par 3 holes. If you throw in the 250 foot to 300 foot range you're going to hitting par at best on almost all of the holes out here. Many of the holes that say 280 feet play much further because of elevation or some obstacle that you have to carry or go around. A few more par 4 holes would have been nice as well. I think hole 6 is the only hole that plays less than 300 feet on the whole course.

Blind baskets:

On much of the course especially after hole 6 you cannot see the basket from the tee pad and in many cases even from halfway up the fairway. Walking 3/4 the length of the hole before playing it is not ideal especially for the course baggers like me who are trying to cram 10 courses in each day.

Watch your step!:

Lots of cactus and other thorny/spikey things are all over the course and watching your footing is especially important. There are rocks and roots and other things trying to get you and a fall out here wouldn't be much fun. I didn't see any but I can imagine rattlesnakes are prevalent here especially early in the morning or near dusk.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun course in a town full of really fun stuff to do. I assume if you're planning a trip here you're going to do Base Camp as well. I went to Base Camp before I played here and I can say it's one of the best experiences of my life and some of the most fun disc golf you'll ever play. Yes the road in is a bit rough to Base Camp but we made it in a Subaru Forester. It's totally worth it! If you're gonna be in Moab you probably know of all of the national parks around there as well. Try the Thai Bella in town, some of the best Thai food I've ever had. Overall love this course and Base Camp and the city of Moab and the surrounding fun to be had.

Good Course in a Stunning Place 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 23, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set in a stunningly beautiful part of the world and offers a truly memorable experience.

Old City offers a decent challenge to experienced players without being overly punishing or long, so novices can also enjoy playing here. You'll need your driver on almost every hole, and there's enough variety to keep the course interesting throughout.

#17 is easily the signature hole, requiring a well placed drive to avoid a beautiful but punishing cliff drop if you hook your drive too far left off the tee. #7 and #18, both hilltop tee shots, stood out.

Nice tee boxes and benches on pretty much every hole.

Cons:

As other reviewers have noted, the signs are worn to the point of being useless on at least half the course.

Navigation is generally intuitive, but the back 9 was a little difficult to navigate in some spots.

Hole 18 is a beautiful tee shot and would be a great finale to the course, but there was a truck parked directly in front of the basket, so I didn't even bother throwing.

Other Thoughts:

Played on a weekday in late February after a light snow and had the course to myself -- a nice break from the crowds in Moab.

I was able to get the full 18 in in about two hours. While it's not a true "destination course" I would absolutely recommend any DGer try to get in a round here if you find yourself in Moab.

Worth Visiting in Moab 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

The terrain and scenery are great.

Good baskets most of which still have PVC pipe extensions helping to identify their location from/near the tee.

Seemed like good variety of layouts and use of elevation.

No problems with adjacent private property boundaries/yards. The course was designed well in this respect.

Shaded nice post-golf park to have a picnic in.

Cons:

Like many have said, the signage is in serious disrepair.
Someone has attempted to use a Sharpie on some of them.

A few baskets were difficult for us to spot from the tee so we had to walk up the fairways a bit to find them. The original signage likely helped this but since they are badly weathered many are not helpful.

Definite opportunities for some disc damage. This did not change anything for me but others may want to be aware.

Other Thoughts:

I'm a very casual player and I loved this course. Several commented on distances being inaccurate. As a casual player I honestly don't pay close attention or judge those with a eye for accuracy.

Be careful not to throw far past basket 13. The rocky outcrop is great but the tammarisk and grasses below can hide a disc very well.

Seventeen does have a significant topographic feature that we all three barely managed to miss.

It's the desert, bring your own water.

There are cactus as stated by many. It could be a problem but my 14 year old son played in flip flops and managed just fine. I wore basic running shoes that would not have stopped a thorn and yet I never got poked. None of the three of us ever had an issue.

Lovely, shaded grassy area to relax in after playing.

Fun in the wind! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great scenery in the background - mountains and mesas. Typical desert course in many ways, but also some holes that are very green (trees, shade, grass). Good mix of length and obstacles to keep it interesting. An 18 hole out and back course. Baskets and concrete tee pads in very good condition, with benches on most holes.

Cons:

Tee box signs are very worn out, and need to be replaced. Only 1 trash can on the course. Having a map printed out was essential to know where the baskets were.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the gusty wind on the day I played, it was an enjoyable round of golf. Had the course to myself. Would definitely play again if I get back to Moab someday. On hole 17 the sign says "Beware the Pit of Despair". They aren't kidding, and it's worth walking ahead to pinpoint the location so your disc doenn't end up there. Retrieval is close to impossible without climbing skills/gear.

Desert Disc Golf with A View 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an 18 hole disc golf course set in the desert area of the park. Here is your chance to play in the desert and take in some amazing views. I have played many, many desert courses, and this was one of the best. I played this course as part of a disc golf road trip from California to Colorado and back.

I used bullet points for those that don't want to read the entire review.

Amazing Vistas
The park has amazing views of the sandstone cliffs and mountains surrounding Moab. It really is awe inspiring in a way that photos can't convey. If you are in Moab, you probably already appreciate the Western desert. Even if you are not into playing disc golf in the desert, this is fun desert course and one of the best desert courses I have ever played.

Western Disc Golf
First and foremost, I love rugged, Western disc golf. While this is a desert course, it is pretty tame compared to most. While the ground is a bit rocky, it is mostly dusty and dry. Bring your bright and durable plastic or be prepared for some scuffing and scraping. There is quite a bit prickly pear cactus on the desert holes. There are also some thorny trees and shrubs as well. Moab is 4,000 in elevation, so discs will tend to be a bit more stable than sea level play.

Exposed
Play early in the day to avoid the heat in the summer. Bring lots of water and wear sun screen. While there is some cactus, it is low to the ground, so it mostly a problem for discs, not for people. I wore regular trail shoes and shorts and didn't have any problems. The afternoon wind provided some relief from the heat, but the wind adds more challenge.

Tees, Signs and Benches
Course has ample concrete tees on all the holes. Many holes had sturdy benches. Every target had a tall PVC pipe with multicolored streamers. It was always possible to see the target from the tee (or a little shuffle to the side). There were tee signs with bag hooks on every hole. While every tee did have a sign, some are faded and cracked making them difficult to read.

Navigation
Even though some signs were tough to read, the wonderful streamers on the targets make it possible to know exactly where you need to throw. There are plenty of navigation signs to guide you to the next tees. It is easy to see where to go next, even when you must cross the small street to play Holes 7-11.

All 18 in a Row
Once you tee off on Hole 1, you do not return to the parking area until Hole 18. Although, it would be possible after playing Hole 6, to skip over to Tee 12 without playing 7 through 11 across the street. Otherwise, prepare to bring all the water and supplies you need for the entire round.

Variety
While most holes are only 300 feet or so, there is a great mix of shots. The elevation of the land is used to provide maximum challenge. Some targets are perched on mounds, while others are surrounded by rocks. Most of the holes are in the desert area of the park and others are located in the riparian zone. Even in mid August there was green grass and plenty of shade on this area of the course. Wind in the open areas adds to the challenge.

Visible Targets For The Win!
I have played so many desert courses where the target is not visible from the tee. Old City Park is NOT one of those courses. Every desert course should strive to create an experience like this course. There was no guessing where the targets were, ever.

Kids, Carts and Strollers
Probably not a good idea for any carts or strollers without solid tires. Too much cactus for air filled tires. There are some rocky areas that are not easy to navigate in a cart or stroller. If your kids understand cactus and have proper footwear, they should be able to walk along. Even though the holes are not that long, it is not really a kids course. There is a super green and shady park right next to the disc golf course where the kids can cool off in the shade. There is a little stream, duck pond, play ground, picnic shelters and BBQs. A great place for a shady picnic before or after the round or instead of a round.

Lost Discs/Damaged Discs
You could lose some discs in the thick Olive trees on 7 - 9. Discs can be damaged if they land directly in some cactus. If you are afraid to damage a favorite disc don't bring it. Pack light and bring only a few discs you don't mind getting a beating: a wind beating hyzer disc, a tailwind driver and a putter should be all you need to get the job done.

Restroom
There is a restroom in the green oasis area of the park. There were no other restrooms or portables on the course. However, there is opportunity for some privacy near Holes 7-9.

Cons:

If you do not like rugged Western disc golf, these could be cons for you.

Cactus
If your disc happens to dive into a patch of cactus, it could be damaged forever, even if it is premium plastic. The rocky, dusty terrain can damage regular plastic. Use premium plastics to avoid damage.

Sun Baked
Play early to avoid high temps and use suncreen. Some of the tee signs are faded and not easy to read.

Other Thoughts:

Split Personality
This park has two distinct areas, the super shady grass area for picnics and the dry, dusty, natural desert area that contains the disc golf course. The green part is a little oasis with a gazebo and a pond. I imagine they have weddings here. There is also a play ground, picnic shelters and BBQs. Great place to cool down after a round or for a shady picnic. This area of the park is at least 20 degrees cooler than the desert area of the park.

Utah is Awesome
Moab is a wonderful outdoor adventure destination and the nearby National Parks are amazing. The jaw dropping beauty of the geology of the area is like no other place on Earth. There is no "driving through" Moab. You must make the effort to stop and visit. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks add to the adventure and part of the "Mighty 5" National Parks located in Utah. This course makes it possible to add a desert course to your "played list".

Rating
Absolutely one of the best desert courses I have ever played. It offers a good variety of shots and elevation changes with excellent cement tees and lots of benches. While the rocks and vegetation are rough and tough, this course is tamer and more forgiving than many other desert courses. I love the fact that targets are easy to locate from the tees! I am going to give this one a four.

Great course in the desert 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great course in Moab. I had some local players show me the course. How lucky I am. Great Par 3 course with lots of different and difficult shot. Most shots are around 300 ft some over 300 and 1 at 400 ft.

All baskets had an extend PVC pipe with ribbons on them so you could see them. Holes 1-6 are in the desert area hidden behind juniper trees. Thanks for the Ribbons and some local players. Holes 7-11 are more in this grassy area that are guarded with some russian olive trees. Avoid getting your disc in the Russian Olive trees. BIG THORNS.

Then when you get back to holes 12-18 back in the desert area.

Trails are well labeled to show your how to get to the next hole. That was a added feature about 2-3 years ago.

Hole 17 is the only hole you really have to worry about. They call it the Black Lagoon to your left. Walk the hole first to see where the lagoon is before you throw. Keep it to the right.

Hole 8 and 18 are side arm throw delight.

Great elevation on the course and a lot of hard shots with lots of juniper trees.

Cons:

There is some good signage on the holes but some have been baked off from the sun. Unreadable from the sun.

Bring a map is very helpful and also on this site there is hole description I would recommend having this as well.

Also there is a lot of cactus on the desert side of the course.

Other Thoughts:

I threw a Valkyrie DX most of the time and the plastic is the lower end it just got chewed up from the rocks and some cactus.

If you meet an older gentleman and his wife name (Rolf and Nan) play the course with them like I did. You will have a great time. They are locals and play all the time.

I really enjoyed this course. I give this course 3.25-3.5.
Will play this course.

Best time to play is in the Fall. The Temperature was around 65-70 degrees.

Only course in Moab, but one of the best I've played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I am so glad I found this course when I was in town about five years ago. Every time I go back to Moab I bring my discs and play at least once, if not two or three times, while I am there.

-This is the only disc golf course in the city of Moab. That in itself is a pro.
-It is never packed. I have run into, at most, two or three groups playing at a time
-The course is beautiful
-The course dries up very fast
-The holes are very well laid out with great signage at every hole.
-There are a lot of baskets that are hidden behind and around trees, but they all have extended flags on top so they are visible which is awesome.
-Nice variation of upshots and downhill shots.
-Not the longest course, but there are a decent number of holes to let it rip on, like hole 7, 11, 13 and 18

Cons:

Only really one that I can think of.

There is a lot of cactus and fairly large bushes so your disc can land in some place that are hard to get to or just out right painful if you misstep.

Other Thoughts:

This probably won't sit well with locals, but if you are in town and like disc get out and play it. It is a fantastic course. One of my favorites that I have played.

Well Designed Desert Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an interesting 18 hole course built through the desert hills of Moab. The vegetation is desert scrub with a scattering of short juniper trees and some thicker Russian Olive around holes 7, 8 and 9. There is enough elevation to keep things interesting, but nothing severe. Most holes are relatively straight, but Hole 8 is a good dogleg right in the woods.

The juniper trees are short and scattered, but they are very good at grabbing discs. Once you've landed in one you will have difficulty getting a clean lie as the branches are all of the way to the ground.

Hole lengths run from 225' to 420' (based on the tee signs), but as others have mentioned some of the distances seem inaccurate.

Many of the baskets are placed in low spots or behind trees, but the hidden baskets all have very tall fiberglass poles with flagging tape which is a huge help to first-timers like myself.

Very nice concrete tee pads with perfect texture. Good tee signs with useful maps, and also helpful hole descriptions. Tips like "Avoid the gulch!! Clear it or stay to the right." are great for traveling players. This is the kind of information that would normally take a round or two to discover.

Cons:

Hole lengths don't vary much, with most in the 275 - 350' range. Though the course has quite a few trees most are short and for the most part you throw over them. So many of the holes are similar in length and challenge.

Lot of cactus on the ground so look before you reach down to pick up your disc. There is also a lot of exposed rock so your discs may take a beating. Bring your premium plastic!

A couple of the tee signs were missing or so burned out by the sun that they were difficult to read.

Other Thoughts:

Given the terrain and vegetation the designers did a great job with this course.

The wind may be the big variable here. The morning I played was very gusty and discs were really getting bounced around in the air.

fun desert course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-nice variety of holes
-makes great use of the elevation
-wooded area on holes 7-9 is a great change of pace
-great equipment: concrete tees, nice baskets, benches, detailed signs (distances seem at little off? some holes looked shorter to me)
-great navigational signage
-water fountain in the park between hole 18 and the parking lot

Cons:

-very little shade to hide from the desert sun
-distances seemed inaccurate on the signs, i wonder if the pin locations have changed over time?
-a few places with treacherous rough or drop offs, watch out on holes 9, 11, 16, 17 and beware of cactus
-speaking of drop offs, there is lots of rocky elevation so wear good shoes and watch your step

Other Thoughts:

The course at Old City Park is a single out and back loop playing mostly through dry desert scrub with with lots of rocky terrain and moderate elevation changes.

The first 6 holes play along the upper part of the ridge on which the course is built. There are minor slopes to navigate and a few bushy trees to avoid but you can throw your choice of line over the top of most holes. Hole 6 is a fun, downhill ace run. After crossing the road, holes 7-9 play through a wooded area (furthest point out from the parking lot) and is a great change of pace from the preceding holes. Hole 7 is a fun downhill hyzer, 8 is a short, tight dogleg right, and 9 is an uphill challenge with a narrow fairway. Cross back over the road after holes 10 and 11 and the remaining holes occupy the lower portion of the ridge and feature some really cool elevation changes. Hole 13 is a great downhill shot to a basket perched on a small rock outcropping with a bit of a drop off on 3 sides. Hole 17 has some dangerous drop offs to avoid in the fairway and on the green and hole 18 finishes with a big downhill left to right shot.

The course is fun to play and you have the beautiful scenery of Moab and the red rock ridges all around you. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone passing through, especially if you don't have the time or appropriate vehicle to make it out to Base Camp Adventure Lodge.

I'm Blind! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

If you love Moab and disc golf then this is the place for you! This is a very well thought out and difficult course through the desert scenery up above the Old City Park.

Every tee has a good pad and color sign with a satellite shot of the hole and picture with arrow showing you where it is. They also provide instructions on best route or things to watch out for on the hole. Whoever put that together put a lot of time and effort in to it and it turned out really well.

You get a great variety of shots. The course tends to favor RHBH throwers, but for the most part us RHFH players can find a way. You get a good mix of easier shots with some long ones. There is a great use of elevation change here too, probably one of the best I've seen. You have a few tough uphill shots and some fun long downhill ones.

The directional signs for the next holes and paths are great. It's particularly useful when going between holes 3-4, 6-7 and 11-12.

Cons:

For as much time and effort as was put into the signage it's kind of unfortunate that the posted lengths and some of the instructions aren't very accurate, particularly on the first 6 holes. Sign says it's 350 with a dogleg left and it's a straight shot at max 300. They also don't angle the tee pad correctly on some of the signs, so when you think it's straight ahead it's really off to the left or right a bit more than you expect, (if you're using the tee pad on the sign to orient yourself to the basket location). For example, Hole 1 says it's 320 ft. The longest I can measure it on Google Earth is 280 on a curved path.

There are an absolute plethora of blind shots on this course. Normally this would just belong in the Other Thoughts section, but there are so many that it gets a little annoying having to walk halfway up the fairway on half of the holes to see the basket, especially since you learn to not trust the sign distances in the first few holes.

There is cacti EVERYWHERE which can be pretty harsh on your discs. A few of mine have some pretty good gouges in them now.

The course is almost constantly windy, as is Moab in general.

There was a lot of garbage all over the course and not a single garbage can in sight.

Other Thoughts:

I can't stress enough how important it is to have a spotter on many of the holes on this course. We spent way too much time looking for discs that had buried themselves in the countless bushes and trees.

It is hot and sandy, so sunscreen and water are absolutely needed if you don't want to be parched and crispy after a couple hours on the course.

Overall this is an awesome course! The drawbacks are minor when compared to the benefits it offers. I was down for the first Memorial Day Classic and plan to come back for more.

Pros:

-Beautiful surroundings. Moab didn't become a desert tourist destination for no reason, and at Old City Park, you get to throw a round surrounded by desert beauty
-Varied terrain. There's a little bit for everyone here - you have the woods on a few holes, the desert on most, with hills, flats, doglegs. You'll have to pull a lot of shots out of your bag to handle this one.
-Excellent signage. Whoever is responsible for course upkeep clearly knows that a lot of first-timers will come here while on vacation, and the tee signs and directional signs were a great help
-The course has a great balance of challenge and accessibility. More experienced discers will have plenty of fun here, but newbies can too. There aren't many courses that have that kind of broad appeal

Cons:

-HOT. I literally woke up at 6AM just to play this course before the heat came for the day by 9AM, and I'm not sure how much I succeeded (I played it in the middle of June). I went through 40 oz. of water by the 16th hole. If you plan on playing here (and you should), be prepared for the heat with water, sunscreen, etc.
-The bugs. Oh, the bugs. I felt like a street light at night with how many bugs kept swarming around me as I wound my way through the course. I didn't get bitten, but man, they were annoying.
-There are a lot of blind baskets. A lot. Bring a spotter if you can, or take the time to walk halfway up the fairway to see where you're driving, because as good as the tee signs are, you won't really know
-All of the holes are similar in length. I would have liked to see a 100 footer mixed in with a 700 footer or two, but this isn't a big deal. It's still a great course
-The desert rocks and vegetation will tear up your plastic. Leave your pro-D and DX discs at home.

Other Thoughts:

This is an excellent course, and if you're anywhere near Moab, I highly recommend stopping by for a round... provided that round is played when it's cool outside! I did lose two discs on this course, and I never lose discs. So you'll have to be careful - but that just means it's a great challenge.

Beautiful and wild! Just like Moab! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was one of the courses I was most excited about playing on my cross-country road trip, and I wasn't disappointed.

- Cacti and benches on every hole!
- Great signage (especially the "next tee" signs) as well as grippy teepads and the overall care for the course's fairways and baskets.
- Varied terrain and elevation that has blind shots. (Spotter definitely recommended)
- Breathtaking views of the Moab Valley and its stunning red rock formations.
- Close to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Go to both of them!
- Hazards omnipresent, such as cacti, trees, and avoiding hitting the numerous lizards running around.
- Goes from a complete desert on #1-7 to a quasi-grassy forest oasis on #8-12 and back to a desert on #13-17. Ends in a grassy part of the park on 18 with a downhill anhyzer.
- The experience of playing not only in the desert, but in the beautiful town of Moab!
- Free water at the fountain after hole #18. You're gonna need it if you play here in the summer. It was about 103 when I played here
- Decent hole lengths. Some top 400 feet, allowing for some really strong throws.

Cons:

- Blind shots for over half the holes. Let me reiterate: you're definitely going to want a spotter. I didn't have one, but I guess I lucked out and didn't lose any discs.
- Hot hot hot! That's to be expected though here in the summer months. Bring tons of water.
- Some holes play close to the road--especially the road that bisects the course. Watch out!
- Unforgiving plants and terrain. One disc went into a nasty cactus. Many other discs banged off rocks. Save the life of your DX and Pro-D discs and bring some quality plastic that'll withstand the elements.

Other Thoughts:

Wow. What a course! This is a great recreational companion to the million other things to do in the Moab Valley. Not sure how often this course is utilized by tourists, but it should be! Perhaps longer holes, fewer blind shots, and a landscape a little more like the nearby Base Camp Adventure course would fetch a higher rating, but this is by no means a lame or whimpy course. Quite the opposite!

Favorite holes:
#13: Downhill blind shot that takes a descent to a basket cemented into a pile of rocks that hugs the road. A definite risk/reward hole!
#17: One of the better holes I've played in quite some time. Throws across a very steep ravine. Better hope you make it!
#18: Nice way to end the course. A steep downhill throw into the grass makes you forget you just played in the hot desert.

Most professional looking course I have played. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great desert course in the city of Moab that requires some accuracy and a good drive to score well. This is your typical desert course with lots of brush, cacti, and medium sized trees that provide plenty of challenge for most players. The tee pads are nice, concrete slabs that all have a sitting bench and sign behind them with hole pictures and info. Lots of fun shots from hard straight blasts around thick brush, to tight wooded shots though the desert vegetation. Overall, a nice variety of shots are necessary to avoid disaster. The last hole is a fun downhill shot down into the park area.

This was the best marked course I have ever played and it's nearly impossible to get lost. A few holes require some walking in between, but signage will lead you right to the next hole. There is even a note and direction taped to the pole of the basket letting you know where to go.

Cons:

The prickly pear, barrel cacti, and other rugged desert plants are everywhere. Watch carefully for them. The thick brush can be a easy place to lose a disc. Don't forget about snakes and scorpions that could be found here as well.

It's the desert, so bring water and snacks. I'm not sure if there are facilities at the public park.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course that isn't easy.(my score reflects that) Maybe it's because I had just played Base Camp Adventure and was exhausted. Either way it is a fun course worth checking out, even if you came to the area to play BCA.

Favorite holes: #6, #8, #13, #18

Unique Experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very unique (to most people). Most of us don't get to play in a desert, yet alone one with the surrounding landscape such as this one does.
- Very well marked. This is pretty necessary too otherwise you'd probably never find a basket or know where to throw
- Emptiness. Granted I've only been once, we only saw one other person playing the course. Which was awesome considering our pace.
- Clean, I don't remember there being any trash. Which is always awesome.
- Holes were a challenge. You had to pick your shot choice wisely, and think about what you'd have to do next. Rather than the typical chunk it far as you can and hope you get close.
- Many more tourist attractions. This isn't far from 2 awesome National Parks: Arches, and Canyonlands.
- Probably fairly local to most places. Downtown Moab was probably only 10-15 minutes away. So chances are you don't really need to go out of your way to get there.

Cons:

- Easy to lose a disc (Blinds). I believe it was 14 I finally lost my disc. Multiple other occasions we'd look for around half an hour trying to find a disc. I recommend if possible having a spotter go around halfway down each hole so you don't lose or have to look forever for your discs.
- Hot. Some people this will bother. Unless it's winter chances are it'll get hot. Usually over 100 in summer. So be prepared.
- Some areas have long grass, this presents both snake hazards, and more potential to lose a disc.

Other Thoughts:

We were here on family vacation, as we drove to the house we were staying at we passed this. I immediately wanted to try it out. We didn't have discs, so we bought 1 each hoping we wouldn't lose it. You'll definitely want to bring multiple. If you need to buy a disc I recommend Gear Heads or something like that they had great selection.
Main thing keeping this from a 4 or 4.5 was definitely due to the time I would have to spend sometimes finding a disc.

A nice side trip from Arches 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 12, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great setting and views
Good use of natural terrain as obstacles
Good elevation change
Nice variety of holes (long, short, left, right, up, down) after the first handful
First handful are fun since they're all down and reachable
Fun long blind shots - would make for a great ace, if you're in to that sort of thing
Empty the day we played it
Signs have been added, which would have made finding baskets and pads easier

Cons:

Lots of rocks- bring your old discs
First holes are the same - hike up, throw down
Open course, so no shade and can be windy
Almost all shots are over foliage - no trees to need to throw under or around

Other Thoughts:

Can play in about 35 minutes
A spotter is helpful, but not required
My friend Tim is a dick

It's even hot at 8am! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is the best I played on a recent road trip in the category of signage. Each tee has a sign with an overhead photograph and a distance. Without distances in an open terrain such as "the desert," it would be a total crapshoot. With distances marked, I was able to put most shots in an area where I knew to start looking for my disc. The directional arrows between holes are also a bonus, since many courses leave the first-timer to fend for themselves. Also, the scenery is unbeatable, and the weather is great, if you can get out early enough.

Cons:

Some of the holes get repetetive. Many of the front six or seven are pretty much open bombs if you can elevate your shots over the low scrub. Some of the baskets are tough to find, so you end up walking the course twice to play one round. If you can talk your girlfriend or your mom into walking around in the desert, a spotter is a near necessity. I know I would have liked to have your mom out there to spot for me. Holes 9-12 as I recall are blind and have thicker vegetation than the rest of the course. These holes can be a detractor for the average player out to meander a course and catch up with friends. Serious players will be pleased to find holes of variable skill level within these 18 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Play this course in the early morning or the late evening. Wear a big sombrero if you plan to be out in the middle of the day. Wear leather boots; sneakers run the risk of cactus puncture. Set out as much water as you would normally bring to play disc. Double that, then double that, and you have enough water to play this course. Don't be a dummy like me - bring a spotter!
