Holiday Baggin 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.405 Rating) A lightly wooded school course with two tees on each hole.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - The challenges presented here are ideal for teenagers looking to learn the game. Lots of holes between 200 and 300 feet. Mostly open to lightly wooded and very hard to lose a disc unless one goes up on a roof. Aces could be had for the athletic first timers.
- QUICK PLAY - I personally threw both tees on each hole instead of doing two loops and finished in 39 minutes... and I took photos.
- TEE MARKERS - Less than ideal being a small numbered stone laid flush with the ground. The reason I include this up here is because this was likely the best that was achievable by the course builders so that the mowers could easily cut the grass.
- LOOP - Tee (1/10) and basket (9) and within 50 feet of each other.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds were in great shape for my round. Fresh spray paint on the ground too to mark the tee edge.
- GROW THE SPORT - Easy access for kids to learn the game on.

Cons:

A small footprint to work with.
- BASICS AND NAVIGATION - Tees, chains and signage are on par with my typical 1.5 and 2.0 rated courses. Natural tees, but as noted above, they are at least marked. Chains I thought were the newer mach 2 version. Navigation requires an app to move along quickly. The markers, although better than nothing, will take some time to find on the first go around. I'll also note that tee (1) is not really close to any parking lot
- HOLE VARIETY - Mostly flat with limited tree coverage. Hole distance range from sub 200 to just over 400. Hole (7/16) are listed as a par 4s, but they are novice level par 4s. There's a dry creek along (3) and that's about it for the curve balls here.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Well below average imo. Buildings and roads in view the entire time. Mostly an open landscape. I liked hole 4/13, which is the one moderately wooded open and it requires splitting a row a trees in route to the basket. Overall I scored it 15 percentile.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - Even par likely nets a sub 850 rated round. Perfect for Novice level players.
- SPACING - The course occupies maybe 5 acres of space. So yeah, discs will likely end up in other fairways, school access roads and parking lots. Big roads also come into play a couple times, especially on (7) with Airport blvd along the right side. Traffic was humming the morning I threw.
- ACCESS - I removed Baker High School from my "bagger" wish-list not to long before I played here. I thought to myself, I only go to Mobile for business trips, thus I'll only be here on weekdays when school is in session. Veterans day on a Wednesday made this bagger hit possible.

Other Thoughts:

Baker High School didn't have much land to work with, but it has achieved enough to provide the basic disc golf experience in a compact easy-going format. This course will be great for kids and for those in the neighborhood to practice after hours. Not really worth checking out for travelers passing through or even those in the Mobile area unless they feel the need to play every course once. I've played 22 of the 25 Mobile area courses as of this review and would slot this one at 18th out of the 22 I've played.

Mobile's least ideal course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- forgiving fairways, nice and open for beginners
- baskets are in fair condition, numbered
- ace runs
- doesn't take much time to throw the course if you already know the layout
- the course isn't completely flat, some very slight changes in elevation.
- begins where it ends
- regularly mowed

Cons:

- tees are marked with a short piece of numbered pvc pipe, hard to find
- most of the baskets are jumbled in the same area, it's hard to tell which basket goes to which "fairway"
- layout is very bland
- some fairways run close to various streets & school buildings
- limited access during regular school hours
- trash throughout course
- natural tees
- no multiple tees, pins
- no directional signs between holes

Other Thoughts:

Baker High is a fairly open, short, basic, highschool gym class style course. It starts just off of the football stadium parking lot, between a school building and Airport Blvd, then works itself in a clockwise manner around a vacant grass field before finishing close to the beginning. Everything about the course super basic. The only redeeming qualities of the course that I can think of are, that the course is guaranteed to empty on the weekends and the relatively open fairways could be beneficial to beginners learning the craft

As far as Mobile courses are concerned, this is probably my least favorite in the entire area. There's just nothing it does well that another course in the area can't do better. Be prepared to do a little extra walking if you're navigating the course for your first time. The lack of directional aids and no online map stifles the speed in which a new visitor can get in and out.

Still alive 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great for beginners. Baker offers a quick introduction to the sport.

- Fun short holes - veterans won't be overly impressed but may find themselves pleasantly challenged on a couple holes.

Cons:

- no amenities to speak of. I'm not positive but so far as I know there are no bathrooms, benches water fountains or garbage cans on the course. Granted it's a quick play so...

- Short and a little cramped. Repetitive albeit creative use of the property. It could be argued a variety of shots can be used on different holes.

- not playable during school hours to say the least. a couple holes play near the building itself.
the only signage are the tee markers and basket numbers.

Other Thoughts:

It's been 5 years since Baker was evaluated and I felt obliged to do so. I stopped by last year but it seemed to be busy w/ students despite it being a weekend so I went onwards to Cottage Hill w/o playing.

Baker seems like a great place for beginners to get acquainted with the sport, though it is short and kind of cramped. Natural tees; each tee is marked by a small PVC pipe jutting out of the ground between 12 and 18 inches out of the ground with the hole number on it. The baskets are labelled similarly. No distances, maps, etc. Barebones.

Hole 1 starts in the fenceline on the northside of campus near the football field, a straightforward RHBH hyzer heading east. 2 and 3 progress along Airport Blvd eastward along the Pickup/drop-off lanes (one reason you can't play during school hours). 2 is a blind shot, a well controlled RHBH hyzer will put it well within birdie range or you may just hear the sweet clink of chains. Tee 3 is hidden in the bushes just past 2, throwing back towards the empty field on the eastside of campus. 4 plays back towards Airport Blvd, the basket hidden in the trees. 5-8 all play towards the center of the empty field on the east side of the campus, clockwise, sometimes making you double-back to the next tee, bringing you on to nine, lying inside the fenceline on the northeast side of the building, throwing west towards the football field/back towards hole 1.

If I lived in West Mobile I'd gladly stop here for a quick 9 hole warm-up before going to Cottage Hill or elsewhere. That being said, with the lack of amenities nearby I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to play it. A few holes - 2 especially - play close enough to Airport Blvd on one side and the school on the other side to warrant caution from untested players susceptible to "wild gusts of wind".

Very Nice beginners course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1) Considering the landscape, this was a well thought out course

2) there are a few moderately challenging holes, throwing through awnings, trees, or (if you choose) over a trailer

3) Dual tees make a quick and easy 18 hole course

4) Not a lot of walking between holes, like some courses in the area.

5) Great course for beginners learning to judge the distance of their throws

6) Tees are all marked, and markers are the same throughout the course

Cons:

1) Is a fairly easy play

2) Playing is NOT allowed while school is in session

3) One or two tees had been moved due to construction in the area

4) holes 8 and 9 Play up against a major road, and can be a hazard to drivers.

Other Thoughts:

Good, Consistent course overall, A quick play, and a great beginners course.

Fun and Easy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well thoughtout. I think this is the best coarse that could have been built with the land available. This is a great coarse for beginners and it is well marked. There are some fun holes and the use of the alternate pins makes it seem like an 18 hole coarse.

Cons:

The holes are really close and you have to keep you eye out for other players. The coarse is really close to a major road and today I saw a car that had been hit off of the 9th hole with a cracked windshield. There is some construction going on but it really isn't too bad.

Other Thoughts:

Good coarse, not great. Only takes about an hour and 15min to play.
