Course designs for OGRES or more appropriately ORCS. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Course is setup in a little town park. Wabasha is fairly removed from major population so it is nice to see a small town like Wabasha embrace the sport.

2) Course is highly visible from HWY 60 so it might peak the interest of the local kids.

3) Baskets are bright yellow (although some are rusting) and highly visible. Not that you really need it with such short holes, but it makes them look better. Baskets also have a black # on the Yellow rim (almost like a Discatcher, but at the same time nothing like them).

4) There are teeposts by all of the tees and the sign on the post basically points you at your basket. This is helpful because in a few spots you might think you are throwing at a different basket.

5) Very beginner friendly, but it won't help them learn how to putt because the baskets are TOO forgiving. Course is relatively short and the holes are pretty much right out in front of you except for #6.

Cons:

1) I didn't see any parking so I just parked on Bailey Avenue between the 1st and 6th tees. Not an issue I suppose because I doubt there will ever be more than one group here at any time.

2) Baskets although cute and humorous at the same time are not in the greatest condition. They are single chained (and very rusty chains) baskets, but the basket (entrapment device or whatever the PDGA calls it) is massive. It is probably a 36" radius instead of a 26" radius, so even if you miss the chains badly if it is low you might still end up in the basket. What I am saying is more no chain hole outs than on normal baskets. The inner part of the baskets is not the appropriate size allowing for all discs if on their sides to fall through the basket. That would really be hard to tell if you had an ace on a couple of the longer holes if the disc fell through and was sitting underneath.

3) Tees are natural (and since they were under a foot of snow I cannot comment n their conditioning, but I can't imagne there being a compaction/erosion issue here witht he course being only 2 years old and what I would expect to be minimal play. This is a con, but in the end it isnt a big deal since the holes are short enough you do not really need the concrete pad.

4) Some holes cross other fairways and they really did not need to design it this way. #1 cuts between 2 tee and the basket. #2 cuts between 3 tee and the basket, #4 cuts between 5 tee and the basket, and #6 goes right past the 7th tee if you decide to gun for the basket rather than go around the trees. These are not only safety issues, but poor design. I know they crammed this course into a small park, but they could have easily avoided the crossing fairways by just moving the tees a few feet.

5) #9 tee sign/post is missing. I ended up playing from the park bench but I would assume the real tee is somewhere int he corner of that section of the park.

6) Course is short, flat and relatively challenge free. It is truly just a beginners course, but if you want to have some fun gunning for some aces at these monstrous baskets, it could be a fun course to play!

Other Thoughts:

This course made me feel like it was designed for Ogres, or as my title says maybe more appropriately for Orcs. I could imagine a fine sunny Sunday afternoon in the summer, where a bunch of Orcs come together to throw discs with their own likeness on them. The baskets feel disproportionately large for the average disc golfer and truly the basket might be too high for young kids to even get their disc out of. Don't you worry children (or little ORCS), because the inner opening in the basket is small enough for all discs to fit through, so just stand under the 4' tall basket and bounce your disc around until it gets on its edge and falls through the bottom of the basket. I mock these baskets only for this humorous story, that came to mind as soon as I putted at the first basket.

It is nice to see this course here, and although it isn't up to the standards of most courses I have played it is still fun to play, it is still good to have in this small town, it may someday inspire a young kid to play the game who wouldnt have heard about it without this course being here. There are some challenges on this course with proper basket placement.

I had a lot of fun playing despite the cons I mentioned above. I would come back again and really gun for the aces now that I know how those baskets catch! Perhaps this course was designed by the elusive SKUNK APE!!!

I had a real hard time giving this course a rating, and I think it is less important than the review I just wrote. I have decided upon 1.5 disc rating (I started at a 1.5, then editted the review and made is a 1, but decided I think the course truly should be a 1.5 because I did have fun despite the negatives. The amenities, baskets, tee areas and design are not well done, but for some reason I just enjoyed this course. I didn't want to rate it along with all of the other 1 disc courses I have played, because I think some fun can be had here. Keep it all in perspective.

WARNING: This course was played in about 10 inches of snow. I cannot comment on the ground conditions of this course nor can I see the turf to evaluate erosion/compaction issues. Please keep that in mind and if you read something in my review you feel to be innaccurate please let me know and I can change it.
