Swan Song 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.240 Rating) This course will be extinct by the end of the year. Play it now, before its gone forever.
- BOMBER HOLES - Currently as of this review, the longest course in the State of Florida at 12,000 feet from the back (blue) tees. It allows the biggest throwers to really air them out. The par 3's here average over 350 feet and several of them are over 400 feet. Also two 800 foot par 5's and numerous par 4's.
- CHALLENGING - Above average due to the length but you are really not required to throw thru tight lines or to shape your shot. Most advanced players should be a couple under course par. Intermediate players should play from the whites and will likely finish a few down from those tees.
- TEES - Three sets of large concrete tees at a majority of the holes. I am a big fan of the multi tee format as it allows every type of player to have an opportunity to play at their appropriate skill level.
- CHARACTER - In addition to the 3 sets of tees, there are a bunch of other nice disc golf amenities. There's a course map and numerous picnic tables before tee (1). There's also a bunch of tee shading and just about all of the tee areas had nice hole signage. Great location for a restroom shelter building on the far side of the layout. There's a pro shop, where you can get a few disc golf items but the selection is limited to four feet of retail wall space. There's also a bar inside the club house and you can legally drink a beer on this course.
- CARTS - You can rent a golf cart, which I highly recommend for this very long course. Personally for me, it was my first experience using a cart for a disc golf round and it was everything I remembered it to be. (I'm a former ball golfer).
- NAVIGATION - Be sure and request a map when you pay at the club house. The course is very long and a few holes jog around a bit. Without a physical map, or one downloaded to your phone, you'll end up confused a few times on the first go around. The map is solid and it got me back on track every time I questioned my next move.
- EXTRA HOLES - 6 extra holes if 18 holes wasn't enough. (1,10,19) all start nearby the clubhouse and (9,18,24) all finish nearby as well.
- FORGIVENESS - The odds of losing a disc due to an errant shot is low with a few exceptions. Playing above you skill level can be hazardous. The back tees really bring the water into play on (3,7,15 and 23) but advanced players should have little issue avoiding it. Other than that, most players should be safe. In addition, the wide fairways and lack of overgrowth under the trees, makes for a round where most errant shots are not further punished.
- RAW BEAUTY - Although not an natural wonder, I'd still give The Preserve a 3.5 rating. The gentle slopes of the open fairways and a several large oak trees along the layout adds to some of the appeal. Also, three larger tranquil ponds along the layout. Missing however is that signature hole along the layout.

Cons:

A solid course without shot imagination.
- LACK OF SHOT SHAPING - With the extent of the openness, you can expect a round with very little thought process on the tee. Most holes I just looked at the hole distance listed on my scorecard, and then quickly grabbed a disk and threw. Way too many holes can be attacked from every angle.
- UNIQUENESS - The overall hole variety was much less than I was expecting for a course rated this high. Tunnel shots are mostly not existent or loosely defined. No pocket shots and baskets are generally loosely guarded. No doglegs and the most any one hole veers is perhaps 10 degrees. As stated above however, par 4s and 5s and a few water shots. There is a hanging basket on finishing (24) but it makes little impact on the tee or putting thought process.
- ELEVATION - The Preserve is listed on DGCR as moderately hilly. I've played courses in other parts of the county that are listed as mostly flat and have twice as much elevation as The Preserve. No hole varies by more than 15 feet. Hole (16) is up that and (17) is down that. Only a couple other holes vary by more than 10 feet.
- MAINTENANCE - I read in several other reviews that fairway upkeep was an issue during their round, and it was for me too. Several holes had knee high grass. I probably spent a good quarter of my round searching for my disc in the middle of the supposed fairways. In addition a few areas had signage maintenance issues as well.
- TIME PLAY - This course is not a quick play. It took me 80 minutes solo with a cart. A group of 4 with carts, should plan to be here over 2 1/2 hours to complete 24 holes.
- PAY TO PLAY - Only $1 to walk, and $10 for a cart. You don't have to get a cart. However, getting a cart will help you avoid a least 3 miles of walking.
- WIND - A very open layout, so expect wind on most days. I personally was blessed with a somewhat light wind day.

Other Thoughts:

I spoke with the manager regarding status of the course going forward. He told me that the course is being slated for demo and is to become a land recharge area. Or as he also described it, "a return to a natural landscaped area." Its ax is slated for the end of 2017.
Having played all three of the Ocala courses, I can definitely say that if you like the longer open courses this will be your favorite. Personally not my favorite, but if I lived in the area I'd work this one in several times a year. If you're in the area, be sure and check out both Sawmill and Greenway as well. Residents should be proud to have 3 solid course in the area.

Amazing!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Golf carts. Enough said. Hanging basket on the last hole, nice scenery, challenging enough but not too hard.

Cons:

Shares property with a regular golf course, it's completely separate, but on a busy day I would bet it could get congested.

Other Thoughts:

I was so excited to play this course because you can rent golf carts to use while you play. That made it a lot of fun, especially since the day continued to get hotter as it went on. There are some beautiful pond areas and a hanging basket on the last hole which is a neat feature. The regular golf course is just across the driveway, so beware of flying balls, and be careful not to throw your disc too far in their direction! We were being a little loud and that may have been a little distracting for the golfers on the other side of the course. Just something think about!

Cart Disc Golf at is finest 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

great set of three big concert tees. Pro, Int/Adv, and Rec.
Easy to read signs, wide open fairways letting you air out shots and try new ones. Makes you feel like your at a high caliber course playing next to ball golfers. You can rent a cart and get food and drinks from the clubhouse and it cost less than $20. Cart is $10, $1 to play the course, rest for food and drink prices vary.

Cons:

can be hard to navigate if first time/ walking. the course is long. grab a scorecard from the clubhouse for easy to follow direction. Baskets are the same as greenway and show there age. would be great to get better baskets on such a high caliber disc golf course used in so many tournaments. Bathrooms are far between same with water. you got the clubhouse at the start and a bathroom / water fountain in the farthest corner of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Come play where GG, Avery Jenkins, Will Schusterick, Jeremy Koling, Paige Pierce, Johne Mccray and may more have played. The only course in Ocala that has had the top Pros in disc golf come to play in many tournaments. The longest par 5s in Ocala.

Disc Golf And Ball Golf Living Together? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Driving down the road to the clubhouse reveals a ball golf course on the left side of the road and disc golf course on the right. You arrive at the shared ball golf /disc golf pro shop featuring clubs and discs, a nice little food vendor (I had a decent hot dog and a beer for lunch), restrooms, etc. Get signed up ($12.00 for you and a buddy includes cart, or you could walk it for $1.00 each). I recommend using the cart, especially in the warmer months and because it's just so darn fun anyway!

The course has 3 sets of large concrete tees and offers more diversity than most of the ball to disc type courses that I have played on. Large trees, lakes, minor elevation changes and even a hanging basket add to the charm and make for an entertaining round.

Cons:

Not too many cons here. It may be a little long for beginners. Navigation isn't perfect, but using the map and the cart help. The course is heavily played so following other players may also help.

Other Thoughts:

This course will put a big smile on most dgers faces. It's good to see dg getting almost as much respect as ball golf at a ball golf facility. It is a little more costly than the average dg experience (i.e. free) but worth it IMO.

Cart golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

It was nice to walk in to the clubhouse and see a rack with discs next to all the Ping and Nike apparel. I paid $12 dollars for my nephew and myself. More than a fair price for this experience. Not many times did I grab any less than a teebird off of the tee (my nephew played the short tees). Most approaches were heavily guarded by huge live oaks with Spanish moss hanging down. (Iron leaves?). I had an awesome time and would pay more than they were charging.

Cons:

The tees were a little confusing to find but I rented a cart and this was not an issue. The grass was pretty high and the stinging nettles were stinging me crazy. They were mowing while we were out there which lets me know they do get out there. I would guess it had been two weeks since they last mowed.

So About Those Carts 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

There's a lot to like about the course at Pine Oaks, even before you get to the carts. This is a long, tough course filled with long, tough holes. Hole average 421 feet from the middle tees and 505 from the longs. That's over 24 holes. That's a lot of golf.

Of course you will get to air it out a few times, how could you not with that kind of distance? But you will have to play careful as well. Many a fairway starts long and open before confronting you with trees. blocking your approach shot. Others, like 16, present the trees at once. If you can get through the tunnel, you should have an open drive towards the pin. So while this course is filled with bombs, they aren't straightforward bombs.

There is also water present on a number of holes. While most water holes aren't carries, they are creatively placed to force your hand. Two of the ponds are very clean. I tossed a Dragon in the water on 3 and another on 7. I left them and circled back after 12 and the current had pushed them close enough to shore to grab them with a stick. There's a true carry later on, over a pond thick with red algae of some type. Anything that goes in there isn't coming back but the pond is beautiful, mostly red with a streak of green leafery down the middle. Another favorite hole is 19. its a long carry over what looked to be pretty wet marsh. I didn't have to go down and wade, but I would treat it as water, and its very possible to reach the basket from the tee in one shot going directly over it.

The course has recently been mowed, and I can only judge by what I've seen, which is a well-maintained ball golf curse turned over to the disc hurlers. Three cement tees per hole, with the sign from the far tees pointing you towards the other tees.(which are usually visible from the far tee anyways.)

So, about those carts. I know they would be impractical on most disc golf courses, but it would be fantastic if they were more universal in the sport. Especially on a course with length like this, they speed up play a lot. Everyone tees off, then hops in the cart to get to the closest disc. Amazing. You can forget your bag, too. There is essentially a rack in the back where you can line up your discs. And since there is no underbrush here, finding discs is easy; you can drive almost anywhere. It's going to be tough to go back to walking a course.

Cons:

The flow isn't top notch. Sure, you get a map when you sign in. But next tee signs would still be appreciated in a number of locations. I do prefer an obvious path leading to the next hole, and I've seen that even on open ball golf courses like this one.

Pros:

On an old ball course. NIce basket placement. Good long somewhat open holes. varied shots can be made. Some H20 to keep you honest. the players on the course were great and very friendly. the proshop personel were great.

Cons:

the grass should be cut, it was very high. threw discs in the middle of the course and had to hunt for a while to find them (not good). Signage could be improved a bit. A little confusing sometimes trying to find the next tee pad

Other Thoughts:

Super nice course. If they would just cut the fairways and leave the rough this course would get a 5 rating and be right up there with the best of them in FLA. I know they are worried about expenses that is why they did away with the last 9 hole ball course they could not afford to keep it open. I would pay $5 so they could cut the grass to make it a much better course. Spend the $$ and rent a cart, this will help with the long grass issue.. Also eat your wheaties this course will test your stamina in the summer bring pleanty of H20 to drink. Club house was great and the beers were cold. Big Arms rejoice you will love this place

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course has a good layout and great T pads

Cons:

I played this course about 3 months ago and said i will not go back because the weeds and tall grass were so bad. I had some family come into town so i decided to give this course another chance. When I arrived i saw that the course looked terrible again. There were weeds up to my knees and it made it kind of hard to throw and find discs. The family I was with is a die hard disc golfer who was very upset to see a course with such potential going to crap.

Other Thoughts:

This course is directly next to a ball golf course. When your on the dingy disc golf course and look over to the ball course and see what the disc golf course could be its kind of depressing.....All I need to say is "c'mon pine oaks, dont neglect your disc golf course. It has so much potential".

Lengthy course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1- The wide open distance. On most of the holes you can just let it rip & not pay for it to bad if you threw a not so perfect shot.
2- Golf Carts. It's a real long walk.
3- Well maintained
4- Nice lanscaping
5- Multiple tees. Blue tees are concrete. Well marked.
6- Bathrooms on the course.

Cons:

1- Terrible markings if any for white or red tees. However the blue tees had nice marker posts showing where the other tees are supposed to be. We played the red tees & just agreed on a start spot based on the sign at the blue tee.
2- Next tee markings could be better.

Other Thoughts:

If you walk the course you pay $1. $5 extra to get a cart. I would recommend getting a course map when you pay, that's the only way we stayed on course. Played mid-day during the week, we were the only ones on the course. Lost a disk on hole #7, my fault bad shot, a little to far left but man did it have some distance. Proud of that fact even though I lost the disc.

Pros:

This is a great place for the "Gun Show" as I call it. What I mean is that you must have a heck of an arm to make it since it use to be golf ball course. It was wonderful for me since I really don't get to open up with my drives that much with wooded courses. Concrete pads for the pro tees. Use of a golf cart was a plus (that would have been a lot of walking).

Cons:

The Pro tees were the only concreted sections. The others were on natural grass. My brother (who I got interested in the game) had to play off the Pro Tee because he got frustrated trying to locate the others. The advertisement for $1.00 to play and a small fee for a cart was a joke. In order to use the cart, one had to pay $5.00. That is fine, but if you playing and not driving a cart, you still have to pay $5.00. So my brother and I got separate carts. What's the use of paying $5.00 if all you're gonna do is go for the ride? Why pay five dollars a piece to share a cart?

Other Thoughts:

Since it use to be a ball course, it has bathroom facilities, club house, pro shop, covered area for talking and socializing. But I did not like to "Pro Shop" and it's lack of equipment. I love Barnet Park in Orlando. Barnet Park is a "Pro Shop" in my eyes, not this place in Ocala. But overall, I enjoyed this place, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys "Disk Golf".

Bring your Big arm. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wow... At 12,125 from the Blues tees this course is long averaging 505 per hole. Concrete pads for the white tees start you off, manicured fairways allows for rollers and great skips. With long holes people tend to try to crank out their long drives possible, however unless you take in to consideration the wind you can find your self in the water. The ponds are lined so getting in them will get you kicked out however they do offer use of their pole to help retrieve your disc, which you will need to ask for at the pro shop.

At 855 this course has one of the longest hole I have played here in FL. With no elevation change, and water that you need to circumnavigate, this hole will make you work for that 5.

CARTS..... How many times do you get to drive around and play...

Cons:

While there is distances listed on the tees for both the red and the white tees they are not there. We tried to find them and it is not likely that you can find 50% of them. The ones that you do find are mostly under tree cover which leads to slipping on the dead leaves on the ground.

Other Thoughts:

Pro shop sells disc and accessories. There is also food available at certain times.

Pine Oaks disc golf course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A very beautiful and well-manicured park. Carts! No underbrush at all until you get to the 20th hole.
Restrooms and water fountain located at farthest point away from club house, which can be accessed from all 3 loops. Clubhouse has disc golf equipment.

Cons:

There were 8-10 baskets positioned on the top of a mound or with a drop-off behind them, which, IMnsHO, got tedious. There wasn't a single par 3 hole where I felt as if I could throw a midrange off of the tee. Many of the par 3s are 400' and a bit above, making it a FULL drive and a 50'-75' up-shot. With the drop offs behind baskets, a smart golfer will generally just lay up.
Tee pads can be slippery in the presence of dew, sand or mud.

Other Thoughts:

A Mike Barnett/Denny Ritner joint venture. About 3 minutes off of I-75, this very accessible course features 24-holes of disc golf on a former 9-hole section of the Pine Oaks golf course, which is still operational. Complete with a clubhouse, grille, pro shop and carts, which the disc golfer can rent for their rounds. A very nice facility with some lovely old live oaks to weave through.

The red and white level tees are natural, sometimes to the point of not being marked at all. The blue level tees are 5x10' concrete with a light broom finish. A bit too light for my taste as I slipped several times in the early morning dew or if the tee had too much sand/mud on it. (Just after writing this, Nate Doss lost the playoff with Ken Climo on the 1st hole (tee #3) because he slipped on the tee and his disc went in the water)

Most of the par 4s and 5s are well laid out and give a blue-level thrower strong chances for birdies. Most of the par 3s require a full pull and seem better suited to a gold level player with an abundance of power.

There are some light elevation changes that had been built into the golf fairways, which add some nice flavor. Several Lakes come into play. (No swimming for discs allowed!)

Walking greens fee is cheap ($1?) But you pay more for the luxury of a cart ($6?)

A Must-Play on Your Florida Vacation! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is on a former ball golf course that is still well maintained. Golf carts may be rented in the stocked pro-shop. There's a grill featuring adult beverages for those that care to indulge. There's also a great covered atrium area outside of the pro-shop that serves as a wonderful tournament central.

This course is unlike many of the Fly-18 courses that are wide-open rip, rip, rip, putt courses. The course features five holes where water comes into play, many elevated basket locations, and a good balance between crush, placement, and touch required for good scoring.

The course has tees specifically designed for the blue, white, and red level. Even par 65 on each layout will correspond to about a 950, 900, and 850 rated round respectively. It is recommended that most players use the white tees. If you play from the appropriate set of tees, the course will provide a fun challenge with the opportunity to make birdies, pars, and bogeys while playing GOLF.

The course navigation is simple. There is no schule. The only place to lose a disc is in the water. The water can easily be avoided with conservative play.

The course does require skill to shoot low, but won't beat you up. It is very fun to play and addictive. The variety and appropriate level of challenge make this one that you'll want to visit as frequently as you can.

Cons:

It is possible to lose plastic in the water here. Discs in the pond are not retrievable due to a delicate pond liner that prohibits wading.

Could be a bit more technical.

Other Thoughts:

All the reviews posted prior to this one pertain to the original layout of this course. My re-design has changed about 2/3 of the course and addressed all of the concerns that were pointed about by the previous reviewers. This property is exceptional for a disc golf course and will serve as the future home of the Players Cup, although the championship layout will only be available for the actual event. Presently there are 18 holes on site and plans are in the works to add an additional 9 soon. Coupled with the Greenway Course and another course in the works for Ocala, this is rapidly becoming a MAJOR destination for disc golfers.

Remember: Don't be a dirty disc golfer. If you pack it in, pack it out!

It's great to have 800ft+ holes but it can be boring if there is not enough in the way . The water and mounds need to be taken advantage of more often. Please don't design a hole that encourage's throws over a roadway.(#3?)

Fun improving course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 25, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

[Updated 4/25/09]
I played this course again since my first go around and for starters the layout has changed for the better! In the updated layout there are still multiple tees per hole, the overall length of the holes has been shortened yet still retains some lengthy shots for those that love to throw for distance!! Throwing over other holes doesn't exist, only once do you find yourself walking across someone's tee but that's easily walked around if someone were playing. Trees are present but not in abundance.

[Old Review]
The most obvious pro of this course is the length of the holes. More than one hole on the course is over 1,000 feet. I personally can launch a disc (Xcaliber) close to 500 feet and enjoy working on getting it further. This course provides wide open lengthy shots. My daily course, the Greenway here in Ocala is much more technical but doesn't have the open distance Pine Oaks does. This course is built on 9 holes of a ball golf course and offers ball golf type mounds on a generally flat state's terrain. A couple times water makes your shot slightly technical (One of the workers mentioned if you lose your disc in the water, they have some people that periodically retrieve the discs and if your name and # are on them they will call you), especially to a new thrower. The course again is built on a golf course and there are still 18 playable ball golf holes available to play so that means there's a shop, bathrooms, drinks, even golf carts for rent. I went with a group of 4 and next time we'll rent a cart.

Cons:

Once again, the layout has changed on this course for the better. I would like to add to the Cons that although there are bathrooms about halfway through the course, locals tell me and I found out the hard way, they are always LOCKED. Not good times! Also, finding the next hole is still a challenge.

Again, this category is very obvious. The layout. Horrible! Downright Horrible! There are times when you are throwing your disc and reading a sign warning you of flying discs. This is because someone's potentially going to be throwing over your head to get to their hole. In addition to wearing a helmet to this course, you might want to bring your GPS. Finding the next tee can be difficult. At one point our group of 4 split up just to find the next tee. Another time one of our players was within putting range of the wrong hole and only shot at the right one because another scattered group had made the same mistake and were waving their arms frantically to get our attention.

This is a new course and is still "growing" Hopefully you will take the time not only to read this post and others but also post your own thoughts!! This course is a lot of fun and the things that would now bring it past a 3 in my mind are minor like signs for the next tee, signs at the tee for par and distance on shots, perhaps physical launching pads and yes, UNLOCKED BATHROOMS.

[Old Review]
I must note my girlfriend who came only to play with me stopped throwing after the 8th hole because they were too long. Also, we had to retrieve two discs from the water from inexperienced players. So length and water hazards could be Cons in some players' books. I don't layout disc golf courses nor do I ever see myself doing so. With that said, someone truly needs to help whoever laid this course out. [Done, THANK YOU] Hopefully in the future, the near future... the course will become what it has in potential.

Pros:

Great property, lovely trees and very little interaction with non-disc golfers. Has the potential to be developed into a solid course.

Cons:

Over-lapping fairways, under utilizes the three lakes present on the property and it is way too long for the casual player to ever appreciate.

Other Thoughts:

I love long shots, but let's be real. The addition of dogleg shots would be good; straight to the hole is boring. I look to the future and hope this course can be developed with more input from local players.
