Decent Community Park Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Course is located in a large community park with lots of athletic fields, but the play doesn't intersect with anything other than a hiking trail and a sledding hill. The layout is positioned in a wooded hillside edge of the otherwise very flat and open park

+ The course is two 9 hole loops. The front 9 was built in 2007, and the back in 2014. Signage shows the difference: 1-9 use old style DGA fibreglass and 10-18 use very detailed printed metal signs. DGA baskets throughout

+ It's a relatively short par 27. The back nine is slightly longer than the front, but "feels" longer, because the front has a handful of really short holes (2-4)

+ Good mix of open, wooded and hybrid holes. Good use of minor elevation change

+ Hole #18 is a challenging finisher. It's only 325' but it's slightly downhill with low ceilings off the tee and guarding the basket. Pretty easy to overcompensate and hit the ground early

Cons:

- Only Con is the length, especially because of three back-to-back holes that are 126' to 162'

Other Thoughts:

~ There are streambeds traveling down the hillside crossing a few holes, but I'm not sure if they're ever very wet. There is a sneaky small rainwater pond guarding the green on 13

~ Because there's a wide swath of open ground crossing the course (a right of way for overhead power lines), the design features some really good hybrid holes where you're throwing across an open field into a green protected by trees - needing to make a gap that's 175' - 200' off the tee

~ Solid footbridges across various streams; excellent navigational signs to next hole

~ The woods and the elevation make this a better-than-average community park course, but it's pretty short. The technical holes make for fun play, and it's one of the few courses in the area

Awesome off the grid course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wonderfully peaceful and private course
All par 3s, really nice to be able to practice shorter approaches
generally empty, always have the whole course to myself.
can do all 18 in just under an hour so its a great course to double up on!
very clear markings for tees and next hole
good balance between open and wooded shots

Cons:

the faraway could be cut more frequently
no par 4 holes
if you shank a disc into the woods.. very thick underbrush makes it difficult to find it

Other Thoughts:

Overall I am so impressed with such an awesome course in the middle of "nowhere" this course is better than some I've played in major cities!

Pros:

Interesting basket placement.
Very scenic and natural.
Elevation
Challenging throws
Good descriptive signs and next tee signs

Cons:

It is a short course maybe too small for some.
Three later holes fairways are bound by Thick brush

Other Thoughts:

Fun course. Use a map. Baskets are marked but some numbers are wearing off (6) Shots and throws are short, but ideal for me. I don't throw over 200 feet ( unless downhill ) Long drive but I'll return. Great restaurant on 21 at intersection. Bob's and Ruth's

Just long enough to have a great time and introduce newbies. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Length of course is fantastic if you don't have a ton of time and nice to play 2-3 times if you do. Great place to introduce a newbie especially front 9. Tight, short holes are an ace tease I like a lot.

Cons:

3 holes (8,13 and 18) are the only over 400'. Seasonal changes can make holes 3 and 9 soggy. Some tee pads aren't flat (I heard that's being worked on).

Other Thoughts:

There are a lot of decent places to eat in Naples. Roots Cafe, Naples Hotel, Middletown Tavern. 2 wineries, Hazlitt and Inspire Moore can make the trip to the course well worth it if you aren't a local.
I heard a course map is in the works as well as volunteer maintenance crew.

Upgrade to 18 holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 18, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good variety in length, elevation, R-L / L-R and straight shots.
- Beautiful landscape nestled in the rolling hills of the finger lakes.
- Nice juxtaposition between 9's with the front playing shorter and easier with the back adding much more of a challenge (for a rec course).
- Both 9's loop back to the same spot to offer a number of different layouts for 27 or 36 hole play; the overall length is not tiring with the full 18 playable solo in 45 minutes.
- Very seldom will you run into other players, especially mid-week, I have only encountered other players on the weekends save a few instances (could be a pro or con depending on what you're looking for).

Cons:

- A few of the natural tee pads are quite uneven or tend to saturate in spring or heavy rain. A few tee pads on the back play too close to the previous basket for comfort (especially 16 pin - 17 pad as 16 is a blind downhill shot during full foliage).
- Holes 17 and 18 are borderline poke and hopes (just one or two more tree removals would mend this)
- A round during hunting season can be worrying as the park borders High Tor state lands and hunters seem very liberal with the proximity they stay to the course (more worrisome if you have a dog along); wear bright colors and keep furry friends leased.
- In peak summer ticks and other biting insects are prevalent as is the dense foliage making misplaced shots off the fairway panic inducing.

Other Thoughts:

The upgrade of the back 9 dramatically increased my like of this course. With the original 9 even 2 or 3 loops around was unfulfilling. Now with the addition of the last holes just one round leaves a great taste of golf in the mouth. The landscape along with the secluded feel make for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Additionally, Naples is a bounty of other activities from the numerous gorges and gullies, to fishing the creek or lake, or just enjoying the quaint town modernity has left behind. Come down and make a day of it; well worth the drive in. Even if you were deterred by the original 9, the back makes for a completely different vibe.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Variety of shots required, R>L, L>R, small S curves.
- Most holes are tight and technical
- Good signs at each tee as well as next tee arrows where appropriate makes navigation easy. There was no map on DGCR, but it definitely wasn't needed due to the great signage.

Cons:

- Course is very short, most under 200, lowest 126 with only 2 over 250 (267 & 420).
- Although most holes were mowed appropriately (or through dense enough woods to not require it), 2 fairways were completely overgrown. 7 had fairly high weeds but it is short enough that it shouldn't be an issue...unless you hit one of the many trees. Hole 8 on the other hand was a complete mess. It is a 420' shot down a power line easement. The fairway is plenty wide with nasty brush on either side (which is fine). The fairway itself, however, was ENTIRELY covered in thigh high grass. Felt like the fairway was through a hay field and it made finding shots even dead center fairway to be a pain to find.
- Natural tee pads for all holes, although they were dry and in decent condition.
- Location. It is really in the middle of nowhere and not really on the way to anything.
- Don't forget the off...lots of mosquitos

Other Thoughts:

I was able to get in 2 rounds on this as my family were (sorta) passing through the area. My wife, son, & I had a good time, it is a fun little course. Definitely a putter / mid heavy course as I used my putter off the tee more than any other disc. Even with the short distances there are actually only a few easy ace runs as most (not all) of the short holes have very protected baskets. If only it were closer it'd get a lot more play but it just isn't worth the drive by itself. If you are in the area, however, definitely swing by and get a quick game or 3 in.

nice little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

clear layout its hard to get lost when looking for the next tee,
nice technical holes will test your ability to shoot down narrow hallways or make long sweeping curves down corridors.

Cons:

only 9 holes which are mostly very short. rough often consist of prickerbushes and more pricker bushes.

Other Thoughts:

I have a bit of a soft spot for this course as it was one of the first I played while wading into the hobby, It's a reasonable course for new and advanced players alike, and while i dont think its worth a long drive to play i feel it's completely reasonable to play around or two if youre in the area.

improved course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

volunteers have done a great job clearing out the thick thorns and brush. obstacles have been placed in spots where short challenging game could have been compromised. fairways have been mowed over the years to help with its growth to fill in patches.

Cons:

some holes are a little to short. holes 3 and 9 can get a little soggy at times ( trail has been created up left side of fairway 3 to avoid a soggy walk to the basket

Other Thoughts:

ive been an anonymous volunteer at this course 4 almost 2 years. having said that, i feel another nine could be added to its already challenging short game. other than that this course is starting to look sweet and its not frustrating when you go off the fairway a little
The pictures could sure use an update to this course. They look nothing like how the course looks now. All the fairways have nice grassy mowed lanes, most brush has been cleared back and still has its short game technical layout. This is not a cheesy 9! and im not just saying that. I would rather play this 9 a couple of times than play some of the poorly maintained 18 hole courses ive played. and for those of you that wanna give at least one good chuck, this course has a 420' fairway with dense woods on either side... so bring your aim!

Good mid practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The short and technical nature of this course will test your midrange abilities.
Naples is a beautiful town that now has some disc golf to boot. Not far from the course are beautiful drives, wineries, and scenic hiking trails.
I recommended just bringing a putter, one mid, and one driver (there is one long drive).

Cons:

It is only nine holes, and even if they expanded the course the current holes would need to be reconfigured for more length.

Other Thoughts:

I use this course to practice my midrange game and get my disc golf fix while visiting the Finger Lakes. This course has helped me learn my buzz, glide, and voodoo (as a driver). It can help your midrange game too.

Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course was very clean and easy to navigate. All of the Tee signs were clear and precise. Each basket was easy to see and find without guessing.

Cons:

Only 9 holes, short distances, some areas were not mowed and it was very easy to lose your disc, but most of the area was clear.

Other Thoughts:

My fiance and I are new to the area and were really disappointed in the course selection here but when we found this course we had a lot of fun. This is a great course and I hope to see more holes in the future. There was a lot of right hand shots that favored side arm throwers... I cant wait to play here again.

Great Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice tee signs & tee pad markers.
Great for beginers and lots of Ace opportunities for more advanced players, particularly holes 3 4 and 7.
Baskets are in great shape (new course shape!)
Variety of Open shots 1, 3, and 8
Technical wooded shots 2, 4, 5 and 7
Semi open with guarded baskets 6 and 9.

Cons:

Many errant shots will be be penalized by retreiving your disc out of thick brambles with thorns aplenty.
There may be a nature trail intertwined with the course, although both times I have been there the place was empty.

Other Thoughts:

Both times I played were in April with no leaves the first time and scant new leaves the second. This course may play quite differently in summer and fall.

Hole 2 - a tricky dogleg to the left, but a nice straight shot will leave you positioned to birdie.

Hole 3 - kinda muddy both times I played.

Hole 5 - a challenge to stay long and straight, with trees on both sides.

Hole 6 - I was ready to dub this the signature hole after playing it the first time. I called it " The Graveyard" due to the large amount of tires and orther scrap that lined the hole and part of the fairway. Imagine my surprise when I came back two weeks later and it was all cleaned up! I kinda liked it the way it was.
Dont be fooled by the short holes. I played this course six times on my two visits and was over par on three of those

On the small side, but has a lot of potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a variety of open and wooded holes, this course has a variety of short and long holes. This course is rather young and doesn't have a large following...but that can make it feel like your own private course.

I also like some of the character of many of the holes on this course, there are a few small wooden bridges to throw across, without water below when I've been there, and the trails have a lot of rock in them so they're never too muddy.

Cons:

I've only been there on two days, but I think this course probably needs a few more volunteers to help maintain the grounds, a few holes were a bit over grown, and a few signs were hard to find because of growth.

A few of the holes on open fields are a bit too open, not a lot going on, but this is only about 3 holes, two of which are on opposite sides of each other.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course a lot, I think it has a TON of potential.

I think that with a little bit of promotion to the community, leading to a bit more popularity...the course could be improved because the extra attention would help out volunteerism and keep the place active.

**UPDATE**

I've played this course 5 or 6 times now over the past month. I'm really starting to love this course. People are pushing to make it an 18 hole course by (at latest) the end of next season. The course is getting walked in a little bit and the crazy foliage is starting to fade. This course is aging well into the late season and I can't wait to play in the fall. Bring some friends, bring a lunch, play twice if you need 18 holes. And myself and firefinger and a few others are always open to a friendly game!

Pros:

A fun short course that has good signs and is easy to navigate. Even though most holes are on the short side the designers made good use of existing trees that you must work around. Great place to introduce the sport to newbies and a good spot to practice with your mid rangers and approach discs if you've got a great arm and think this course is too short for you.

Cons:

It's only 9 baskets. No long hole where you can really rip it. Mosquitos were troubling but given this summer weather there's been a number of mosquitos whenever I've been in woods.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't go out of your way from Rochester to only play this course, but make a good day of it to visit the wine country and play some disc golf.

Short & Sweet 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good signage and easy to navigate. A few holes have nice wooden signs to point you to the next tee when it's not immediately apparent which direction you have to go. You'll probably never have to fight a crowd here either as the course is pretty remote.

Cons:

No tee pads and many fairways consist of mostly dirt and rocks. The ground was also fairly soft and muddy in a few places so I'd imagine after a good rain it would be pretty messy here. Also, any sort of formal parking was a good walk from the course. I noticed people parking in the grass near the first tee so I followed suit.

The course's length is something many may consider a con. Most holes clock in at under 200ft.

Other Thoughts:

This course was designed as a rec. course for the most part and if you go in expecting that you won't be disappointed. Despite its short length, many holes at least had some element of challenge so even if you're throwing 150ft. you may have some trees or doglegs to contend with. The course was just put in when I played here (grand opening was 6/27/09) so the dirt/rock fairways may fill in a bit with grass in the coming months.

Overall, I had an enjoyable round here and hopefully it will get some locals into the sport. The course is far from pretty much everything so unless you're going to Naples or passing very, very close by I wouldn't recommend the lengthy detour that would be required to play here. On the other hand, if you're in the immediate area then I'd say it's worth 30-45 minutes of your time to play a round or two.

well designed with a nice amount of trees. Enough trees to create a challenge, but not too frustrating.
Easy to navigate with decent signage.
Small white markers made tees easy to find.

Cons:

SHORT. No tee pads, just mud. Only 9 holes, and only one set of tees. All Par 3.
Course is far from everything. Well over an hour from Basil and 45 minutes from Letchworth State Park.

Other Thoughts:

Hole one starts to the right of the wooden building. There are some signs on the trees to guide you, but it is not difficult to find.
I added the hole info, but I forgot hole 6
Several of the holes are tightly wooded, the longest hole is just over 400, but the sides are out of bounds so its still more of a finess course.
