Fantastic but windy

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hold on to your butts folks. This course is a wonderful ride.

This course is significantly harder than Dolese West. If you're looking for a relaxing round or your new to the game, take west on instead. East is an experience, and I believe professional golfers would find it a challenge.

What makes this course shine is there's no repetition. Each hole feels unique and special, AND you get the best of what disc golf has to offer: Wooded Holes, Elevation changes, and a few open holes that require distance to score on.

Positives
A handful of shots are blind (and feel very DeLaveaga-like if you know that course) Elevation that's fun but doesn't overwhelm.
The wooded holes have TIGHT lines, but not so tight they don't seem fair. The rough on the wooded holes is more rough than West. Stay in the fairway, and you'll be okay.
Many of the par 3's have tough to access greens, so even a good drive can leave you with no putt.
See my hole breakdown in other notes for details on each hole.

Cons:

Some of the tee pads are small. I had just enough room to do an X-step on some. No full run up.
No bathrooms that I saw, but there could be some in other areas of the park.
You need UDisc or a local for this course. I would not have gotten through it without it. You will get lost.
VERY easy to lose a disc in the rough.
Hole 18 is the only meh hole. The gap to the basket is very small, and it's the only one I didn't think was fair. Also, the path beyond the hole pops you out into hole 1's fairway. Watch out for flying discs as you exit.

Other Thoughts:

The Oklahoma wind rips through this course, and it will impact your discs, even in the woods. Somehow you'll be surrounded by trees yet you can feel the headwind on the tee. I personally liked this, because I've heard about the wild Oklahoma winds for disc golfers. I enjoyed experiencing it, but I doubt most would see the appeal.

Hole breakdown.
*All descriptions written from a Right-hand perspective. FH = forehand. BH = backhand.

Hole 1. Blind shot, and the tee pad is slightly right from what looks like the gap to the pin. More or less you want to go straight and end up slightly right from the tee. You'll need to throw high to get over everything, but not too high. If you're facing a headwind, throw FH. The wind here will push your disc where you can't find it. I spent an hour looking for a drive. A stable FH spin should get you to the ground faster.

Hole 2. Another blind shot. This one is more open off the tee. If you move around the tee pad enough, you can spot the basket through the trees. There are BH & FH lanes around the main obstacles in the center of the fairway. Take your pick. The basket is on an elevated green with a tree nearby that can leave you with no putt even if you're inside the circle.

Hole 3 is a downhill bomb. The BEST shot is a stable BH that turns right but fades back. There's a lake along the right side of the fairway. Turn something over too much and you're wet. This is a long hole, and likely not reachable in one shot. You'll want to get right from the tee to see the basket tucked away in a cove of trees. Again though, get too right and you're in the lake.

Hole 4 is a tight wooded hole. It veers right from the tee, so a stable FH fits the shape, but a Turnover BH is probably better. There's a slight left curve 80% through the fairway, so best case scenario, you might get a 45 foot putt.

Hole 5 is a longer than the others so far, and it's hard to reach. The basket is right of the tee, and there's a large tree in the fairway. A turnover BH on the right side of the tree could get you a birdie look, but that would be a superhero shot. The safer shot is to play left of the tree with a distance FH. You'll still have a 150 to 200 foot approach, but you should have a line. Or, take the turnover with something like a fairway driver. You don't want to be off the fairway. I overshot this hole on the turnover flex and had to lay up the cove where the basket was still 50 feet deep.

Hole 6 is a low ceiling BH that needs to skip left. This is a simple rounded shaped fairway, so you can go over stable driver, but you need to skip far. I threw what I considered the perfect shot & was still 45 feet away.

Hole 7 is a blind, slightly downhill shot. The basket is considerably right of the tee, but you have to push 150 to 200 down the fairway first before moving right. I think the only show that could get to the basket is a BH turnover. I went FH (not knowing the pin placement yet) and had a low ceiling approach about 60 from the pin.

Hole 8 is an open, distance throw. From the tee you can see a cove 350 in front of you. The basket is 40 feet or so in and to the left. BH shapes best for the skip in, but forehand would open up your approach to the green if you don't have that distance.

Hole 9 is another more open hole. The lake is on your right, and there is a road on your left, but you have considerable room to land. This one feels like 419 feet. With the difficult winds, throwing something stable off the tee for 250-300 made sense for me. If you avoid the few trees in the fairway, you should have an open shot into the green.

Hole 10 is similar to hole 8, but the green is more straight in front of you. Throw the distance and try not to pinch the tree line. If you get too close, you cut off any ability to access the green.

Hole 11 take you back into the woods. The basket is inside the cove in front of you, deep and to the right. The line to the basket is not clear with how deep it is. Power players may be able to throw a high FH hyzer over everything. I think turnover BH is best for most players. There are a lot of trees at the entrance to the wood line. Pick what you see as the biggest gap and shoot for the best. If you get through the trees, but don't get right, you should have a pretty clear approach.

Hole 12 is just a dynamite disc golf hole. Average players & pros can reach it, and average players & pros can bogie it. This is slightly uphill, and tree at the top of the hill makes you hit a gap at the end. This is a straight shot.

Hole 13 slopes downhill and to the right. There's one tree in front of you off the tee, and a tree line to your right the entire length of the hole. A big FH hyzer could get there around the outside of the tree, but the inside line is more tangible. Either a stable disc that pushes foreword on a FH line or a turnover backhand could get there.

Hole 14 is the big arm hole. It's all of 700+ and there's nothing in your way to block the wind. The basket is left from the tee along the wood line. You start throwing up hill, and once you crest it, it's pretty easy to see the basket.

Hole 15 is LEFT of the basket for 14. Your eyes will tell you to go right, but that's hole 17. This is a tight, downhill, wooded shot. AS long as you push forward enough, either a FH or BH could get there. The fairway slopes to the right, then the basket is back up hill and to the lift. Uphill like 45 feet or so. There are a few limbs blocking lanes up to the basket, so the putt is tricky. In theory, the turnover BH is better because it might cut up the hill some.

Hole 16 is another tight, wooded shot. The fairway slopes downhill and then back uphill. Ideally, it's entirely an uphill shot. To park this, you'll need to throw something stable. The basket is left of the tee, and there's a short tunnel of trees leading you to it. Fade around them, and you have a putt.

Hole 17 is blind from the tee. The basket is considerably to the right. The basket is slightly uphill and guarded by a ton of skinny trees. There's a low ceiling here, so pushing a turnover BH to the basket would be tough. A great shot would get you a circle 1 putt. An over stable disc on a FH line, low, with skip, could park it.

Hole 18's basket is to the right from the tee. There's a tunnel shot to start, and open-ish area in the middle, and then a tight window to access the green. By tight, I mean likely 5 to 8 feet. If you want a birdie, you need a BH turnover, but it's slight, ideally for a stable putter or midrange that flexes out. The green is surrounded by rough, so if you go for the green off the tee, you could end up in a bad spot. Throw 150-200 off the tee with a putter/midrange into the middle area, and you'll have a chance to shape a shot through the gap.

East Feast 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a different type of park golf. Lots of different shots. The park has a total of 36 baskets in "3" courses though it can be easily split into East and West, but some people still play the original 18 which borrows from both. City and local club take decent care of this course.

Cons:

Difficult to navigate without assistance of an app or friends who've played it before. Dirt teepads on some, unclear sometimes where to tee off. ALWAYS crowded. This is probably the most popular park in the area. Mosquitos are bad after a good rain in the summer. Stays muddy in the woods after it rains, but what course doesn't?

Other Thoughts:

Best time to play is early early morning or right in the middle of the day during the week. The evening is slammed with people as well as the weekend. If you're down for a slower round this it's all good.

Good use of the available space
Very technical holes in the trees
Uses most of the original layout
Friendly locals

Cons:

All the new holes need tees. Concrete or turf and level
Signage is awful
If you don't have a map or a local your screwed.

Other Thoughts:

For sure the best course in the city. A little TLC in some small areas and the course would be a 10.

If you like shaping long throws through trees. its here.
blind shots over scrub or around corners? got a couple.
If you like up hill and down hill shots- yes!
raised baskets, tree protected baskets, uh huh.
some ace run possibilities? sure thing.
long holes to test your arm? it tested mine.
some set up for hyzer, some for anny, some dead strait.
shade. benches. alot to like.

Cons:

Do you like to know where the next tee pad is? not here
Numbers on the tee pads to match the map? nope

Really hard to follow. Map on this website is about half correct. Hole numbers at tee pads and baskets dont match. Could NOT have made it through if there was not a group ahead of us. Got separated toward the end, missed two holes, well I think, not sure really. Might have finished on a couple holes from the west course. If there is a new map somebody should post it.

a couple crazy small tee pads, like, 3' square.
a couple rickety baskets.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course, just not visitor friendly from a navigation standpoint. I would give it a 4 if it had a map and signs that were correct.

Nice Variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice variety of hole layouts (short, long, lefty, righty, open, wooded).
- Baskets are in decent shape. I don't know if they meant them to be this way, but the baskets have an ombre look to them (white top fading to black bottom), looks pretty cool.
- Course is located in a public park in such a way that you don't have to worry about errant discs hitting walkers or children.
- Fishing and playgrounds nearby so it's great for families.
- Multiple pin locations on a few holes.

Cons:

- I don't have any big complaints to speak of, maybe just update the baskets.

Other Thoughts:

- Hole #14 (The Monster) in the long position should really be a Par 4. At 720', it takes two pretty good drives with distance drivers to be close enough to have a long look for par. Carding a 4 on this hole is pretty good. Carding a 3 on it is pretty incredible. Carding a 2 on it is virtually impossible.

Still Oklahoma City's best 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 15, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Holes are well designed in a park where they don't feel like they're out of place; even though there's a walking path, you're never throwing over it and I've never run into unsuspecting park users on fairways.
- Plenty of variation and challenge; birdies are very possible but only if you make your shots
- Concrete tee pads with hole names engraved on them
- Well-maintained (never long grass, trees are trimmed)
- Long and short pin locations on 16 of 18 holes. I personally have more fun when they are set long, but shorts are sufficiently challenging. For holes where one pin location is clearly superior (especially 9), the local guys leave the pins in the tougher locations the vast majority of the time.
- Nice little practice area with a practice basket; also an open area away from the course if you want some fieldwork time
- There's a port-a-potty near the parking area

Some favorites (hole numbers updated for new "East" layout):
1) "The Hork" - A blind, hard right to the long pin, with some initial brush/tree danger; this is a challenging birdie requiring a great RHBH anhyzer, a great RHFH hyzer, or (if the trees are back) a tough overhand
2) Another fairly short blind hole with a more open RHFH or RHBH anhyzer line; the short pin is on a significantly elevated mound, making ace runs a risk/reward decision
5) No ceiling, but mature trees in the fairway make even the short pin tough; the long pin is 30-45' inside an excellent enclosed green with a challenging approach. This is a good example of how the holes tend to require a perfect drive AND long putt to birdie, and this one frequently requires a brilliant upshot just to save par, even with a decent tee shot.
7) Shooting across a usually dry creek bed; get under some low branches but keep it high enough to fade right toward the long pin, nestled in among a guardian tree and some bushes
8) "The Floater" - requires a good right to left fade or skip to get under some low branches toward the basket; another nice, challenging green
10) One of the longer drives; in the long position, it's another great placement behind some bushes and nestled in among mature trees; unless you can throw 380' accurately, you'll have a tough approach even after a successful drive
12) Across a creek again: uphill tunnel shot that needs to go straight
14) "The Monster" - this is a very long hole (~700' in long); test your distance from the tee but make sure you have a window for a second drive; to complicate matters, it's another tough green with a ceiling and trees guarding against the hyzer approach

I could really include every hole! Probably my favorite feature of the course is that almost every hole has a particular challenge, character, and feel. There's a particular thrill while playing a course where 16 or 17 holes are possible 2s, yet I still never finish under par. This was my first real "home course" and the one I miss most when away from Oklahoma.

Cons:

-The big one: it can be extremely busy on weekends or evenings. I generally try to play at less crowded times.
-There's a walking path that winds through the park, only possible to hit on 6, 8, or 9 with shanks. Designed well so as not to be hazardous. Hole 3 is a blind shot and I worry that an unaware park goer might get hit even though I haven't heard of it happening in at least 50-100 rounds; a good "clear" yell is a must.
-Baskets are good overall, but a couple are starting to seem less catchy (thin chains) and would benefit from replacement.
-Navigation/signs: course flow is logical and most signs still have holes, but first timers might be able to get lost (one advantage of it being so busy is that there's always someone to ask or follow)
-the lack of homogeneity between the 5 new holes and 13 originals kinda annoys me (different baskets, and no concrete tees on the new holes)
-most of the new holes aren't particularly hard to par but are almost impossible to get a two; I'm still mixed on these new ones, though they do add to the course and ought to only get better with time
-Just one set of tees; I really don't care about this, but just an FYI
-Can occasionally be muddy and mosquito-ridden after heavy rains and flooding in wetter spring seasons

Other Thoughts:

**UPDATE: Dolese has "East" and "West" courses. This review is for "East," but stems from my take on the original 18, which has DGA baskets instead of the 18 new holes with yellow-banded Discatchers. These 18 also have concrete tee pads with hole names in granite. Many times I still play the original 18, and other times I play all 36 or pick and choose. The new holes are a nice addition to be sure, and make very good use of previously unused park space. They do tend to have a different feel because they have very narrow lines or don't seem to have a possible golf shot to get to the basket. They're still a bit raw in terms of both fairways and tees, but this continues to improve. The East course starts on the original hole 3 and goes through 15, using 5 new holes to make 18. The West course, on the other hand, includes the 5 original island holes and includes 13 new holes on the west side of the park.**

Many courses feel like someone put baskets in a park wherever they would fit, but Dolese feels like the park is designed to fit the disc golf. This is a credit to the local DGA and the course designers, who managed to use parts of the park that have still not been encroached upon after all these years. Dolese captures the essence of disc golf, requiring skill in a variety of shots and encouraging players of all levels to improve all aspects of their game. Although not particularly beginner friendly, it will punish all kinds of rookie mistakes but not so badly as to prevent beginners from enjoying their round. At the same time, it demands excellence from the best. Beginners and experts alike will return to make the shots they missed and recreate their successes. I no longer hit the "off the tee" trees that I used to, or make the same newbie shanks on more open holes, but I'm not sure I've ever finished a round under 54. It's a well-designed course, one where my game has grown the most, and one that keeps me coming back for more.

I usually play by myself, and I've met tons of local players on this course. Often, I tag along with someone else who has way more experience and throws way better, and I have consistently learned something from them about discs, technique, etc. from my initial days as a rookie until my current status as an intermediate. The local disc golf community seems more active here than at any other course in the Oklahoma City area, and it's clear that local skilled players and open level guys (and gals) prefer Dolese to other OKC courses.

In short, this is the original "can't miss" course in the OKC area. Now that it's a two for one, it's even better.

Rating: This was my first review, and I gave it a 4.0 "excellent." After playing many more, I realize a 3.5 "very good" is more fitting. The golf itself is extremely fun, and this will always be one of my favorites for the sake of nostalgia. But even just for the navigation alone, this isn't up there with top tier courses nationwide. Dear Dolese, I'll be back soon!

Easy course for an advanced level player, but still a few holes that will require a good drive, and to have an amazing round you would need to drive and putt well.

as mentioned below the holes are set with the longer tee to basket lengths. The granite inscribed with the tee hole #/name on each pad is a nice touch.

If I had to sum it up in one word I would say the course is FUN.

Cons:

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The layout and scenery is excellent. Very fun course to play and offers good difficulty. Tee-Pads are nice with good length.

Cons:

Holes are a little on the short side except for the "monster". You rarely need a driver! If you haven't played this course before it's very difficult to navigate and the signs are horrible. Course needs new baskets and signs.

Other Thoughts:

Lots of trees and lots of wind!!!

Great park in the middle of OKC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of different types of holes. You have some holes with great wide open shots that allow you to practice your big armed shot. There are a good number of wooded shots that allow you to work on your accuracy. And there are even some fun elevated shots. This course is also smack dab in the middle of the community, something that I have always enjoyed in courses in the city. That could be a con for some people though. There are plenty of trash cans throughout the course, and the baskets and tees are well marked with signs. The course overall is well maintained.

Cons:

Holes 1 and 2, and 15-18 are all kind of packed together in about an acre area at the beginning of the course. The rest of the course is well spread out, but those holes are kind of cramped (can be especially annoying if there are some terrible discers there, because you would need to be on the lookout for some wild discs). If you don't already know where the beginning of this course is, it could be difficult to find.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a great course, my favorite of the three I played in Oklahoma (I also played Paul's Valley Flightline and Griffin Park in Norman). Was a great park with a lot of locals out there playing on a Friday night. There is even a gas station nearby with a proshop inside of it with a GREAT selection of discs. If you live near Oklahoma City, which is actually a great disc golf city, you HAVE to check this course out.

Still My Favorate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This park maintained pretty well. Mostly friendly people that play the course, some really good locals out. The holes are routinely changed up to keep the course from getting stale. There is a good combo of lefts, rights, shorts and longs to keep to you on your toes. There is some beautiful scenery to play in now that everything is greening up.

Cons:

There seems to be a growing trash problem, the local DG groups do a great job cleaning up when they can but the public needs to be somewhat more helpful on this. The city could also put some extra trash barrels out. With the warmer weather starting to peak out, there is also an increase in non-dg incursions into the course so be careful when you drive!

Other Thoughts:

That greening up that I was talking about brings up a another point to the dg people playing the course. There are loads of places to loose your discs when it foliage gets thick and venturing out into can result in some poison ivy rashes. Watch those drives! Also, just a note for everyone out, remember the disc golf courtesy of letting the smaller groups and solos play through if they are nipping at your heels. It makes for a great course when everyone is getting along with each other.
