See My Review for Bearcat/Rock Hill HS

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A typical school course with an almost perfect clone across the street.

-Amenities: Numbered DISCatchers, natural tees, signs with number, par, and distance. Some tees marked by Innova circles.

-"Friendly": Easy to play, quick, well-maintained, hard to lose discs. Loops back to parking.

-Distance Variety: For a school course, alright. One or two in the 100' range, one about 300', and plenty in between.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Less exotic than the HS, but no mistakes. Things are mostly open, with no more than three trees affecting any one hole. (2)-(4) include rock formations around the basket as an extra challenge. (5)-(7) are a pretty good stretch, with a big turnover, a low ceiling, and a downhill throw. (8) has the added interest of OB driveway behind it.

Cons:

There aren't a lot of cons. Mainly, this is just a boring course.

-Difficulty: As in, lack of. All open shots that are very birdieable, and some especially short ones. There are no shapes out here that you couldn't find easily elsewhere.

-Signs: Holes (2) and (7) were missing their tee signs, which is kind of critical when there are no tees. Also, several holes had the signs pointing in erratic directions instead of in line with the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I could almost copy and paste my review for the high school across the street here. Both courses are open, easy, and all around exactly what you'd expect from school installations. They're not dreadfully boring and have minimal variety, but they're nothing to seek out. Overall, Passable. The middle school is flatter, but has better length, more interesting obstacles, and doesn't suffer from bad rough like portions of the high school.

~Similar Courses: Success HS (Round Rock, TX); Northwestern Middle School (Milton, GA).

It's a starter with a few "real course" aspects 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This isn't a bad niner. It's short and obviously aimed for school kids, but I feel that it gives beginners a feel for what disc golf is really like. I think it's ideal for competitive players such as myself to practice.

-Three holes have cool rock greens. They are the shortest hole on the course but they obviously were created for some sort of demand. Know where to land and make a birdie, or be behind the rock and probably take par. I thought hole 4's green in particular was cool. A bunch of boulders are surrounding the basket. I kicked off one of them and aced this hole. It's only 113' long so seems that you should never do worse than a birdie, but if you really go for it, you could go long and have to putt around the rocks.

-I'm not a sidearm thrower. I try to stay away from sidearms. But holes 5 and 6 were both there for me to practice my sidearms. Hole 5 has a tree in front of the pad so I threw a few sidearms with a few different discs to see how they'd work on this hole. Hole 6 is another ideal sidearmer hole. The road is to the left. There is a path to throw over, so this is essentially an island hole as well as the next hole (#7) being over the road as well.

-Hole 8 was cool too because the basket is really close to the OB road. Hole is wide open but requires good placement in order to birdie, if you go too far then you are OB. I felt that this hole along with many others give a good summary of the game and they could very well inspire the kids that go here.

-So much land. I may be mistaken, but I think that the Roc Hill Disc Golf Club does singles here every now and then. There is additional land with more elevation change, so this place is great for safari golf if you'd be interested in bringing a portable basket here.

Cons:

-Holes 1 and 9 are identical twins that are inspired by the same idea and do everything alike pretty much. Both holes are the same hyzer shot around a tree not far from the pad. Not bad hyzer holes but when they are the same and aren't EPIC holes, that's a con.

-It's flat. No real elevation change here, but there are parts of the land with some elevation. And the woods next to hole 6 don't have a hole and I think it'd be cool if there was a wooded hole here. But then again, you never know what options the designer had.

Other Thoughts:

-Personally, I thought this course was better than Bearcat HS which is very close by. It wasn't great, but it had more interesting features to it than Bearcat. Holes 5 was a decent hole that I could see on a regular course. Hole 6 was my favorite hole here and it's legitimately a good flick hole. I can't see any of the holes with rock greens on a regular course, but they were good for upshot practice nonetheless.

-I'd say this is one of the school courses that is good for what it's made for and serves it's purpose. I didn't love it, but some holes give a feel for how great disc golf gets. I thought about giving this course a 1, but since it has some creativity, some cool assets to it, and one hole I particularly liked, it get a 1.5 from me. That to me is a pretty solid nine holer.

Castle Rocks 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 18, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Castle Height's nine-hole layout is a quick, beginner-friendly layout aimed at appealing to beginners. With this design, we can hope that students get a positive introduction to the game.
- This is a simple, easy to navigate layout. It's great for beginners, students or for a little work on the short-to-mid-range game. Between this and Rock Hill HS up the road, you've got two good spots to practice if you live close by.
- This is a good course if you only want to carry two discs with you. I played through in less than 15 minutes.
- They take the Rock Hill concept literally. Holes #2 - 4 all have baskets placed in or around rock formations. Seeing as these holes have no other obstacles, it at least presents some obstacle.
- I enjoyed a couple of the layouts, simple as they may be. Hole #5 is a decent, long hole on the course (at 297 feet) layout. This was the only hole where I had to fully unleash my mid-range disc, and still came out short. This is the only reason you might need to carry a disc with a little more distance.
- #6 was a fun, slight dogleg right layout around trees. At 255 feet, another good-length layout. The other enjoyable hole was #7, a slight downhill, 220-foot hole which forces you to throw around a couple possible obstacles.
- This is a birdie fest for more experienced player. I had a birdie putt on every hole except #7, and that's because my drive smacked the light post.
- Course is in a relatively small space. You can see almost every other hole the entire time you're on the course. It's an ease to navigate as each hole has a tee sign.

Cons:

There isn't much challenge here. I know it's aimed at beginners, so more advanced level players should skip.
- There also isn't much variety. Other than the rocks on hole #2 - 4, listed below, there's very little to work with in terms of obstacles. Add in the lack of elevation, the slight incline on #7 notwithstanding, and this is a simple design.
- # 1, 8 & 9 all play in the same island of grass that have a combined two skinny trees as obstacles. In their place, it would be great to see baskets in the front, left wooded section of the school property. It would take little to no effort to create a far superior layout than what currently exists.
- I wasn't a fan of having holes #2 - 4 all in the rock formations. It really was the only obstacle unless you count throwing alongside some trees on #6.
- Course is obviously closed during school hours. Not that that should have much impact over one's decision to play here.
- Natural tees. Also two tee signs were on there sides - #2's is completely broken, but on its side. #7 is leaning against the fence or it too would be on its side.

Other Thoughts:

Castle Heights is another York County school course that's aimed for the beginner level. Some of these courses on school property are pretty enjoyable, others are quite simple. This is the latter.
- The course does get longer after #4. The first four holes average 145 feet; the last five, 241 feet. At least there's more effort, or wrist snap, required to see some birdies.
- Nothing stands out about this course, good or bad. It's close to about what you would want a beginner friendly, school course to look like.
- It's hard to even view this as a practice course. You could be here working on putting and wide open approach shots. There isn't enough room to practice drives or challenging approach shots.
- This could easily be a better layout by simply incorporating the woods in front of the school. Eliminate #8 & 9 plus one of the rock holes, lengthen several existing holes, and add three baskets into the wooded section. Now, you have a solid course.
- There's no reason to play this course unless you live within 5 minutes or are stat-padding. If you had to play one on this road, Bearcat is a step above with much more challenge. It's hard to justify anything above a low rating for this one.

A quick nine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A quick nine holes. There is another nine holes within walking distance at Rock Hill High.

I liked playing around the boulders. Nice course to work on putt and approach. Can use course as a field to practice longer throws.

Cons:

Very short and of little challenge.

The grass/weeds needed to be cut. I wished I wore long pants.

Other Thoughts:

The course was built for middle school kids who have never played disc golf before. It was designed for beginners.

Short and Wide Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

First and foremost this is an EDGE program course, which means great exposure to disc golf to students, and that's a great thing.

The baskets were in good shape, and the course was easy to navigate.

There are no long holes, so every hole is an ace run, with a few couple of very short holes.

Another course is located very close by at Rock Hill HS, so you can play a full 18 holes without traveling too far.

It's a good place to practice your putt and approach game.

Cons:

The course is basically 9 baskets in a field. There were quite a few interesting basket placements with the baskets surrounded by boulders, which made those holes more interesting than they otherwise would have been.

The biggest con here is the relative simplicity of the course. It's short and wide open.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't make a special trip to play this course, but if you're out to kill some time and throw some plastic, it's ok, especially so if you combine it with the 9 holes at nearby Rock Hill HS.

There are no trashcans on the course. There were also no benches around, which aren't really needed, and the tee signs simply had hole numbers and distances, which is plenty of information. The nearest store for water/snacks is about a mile or so up the road, and there is no water fountain or restrooms available on the course. Although depending on when you're there, you may be able to access facilities inside the school.

Make sure to bring the sunscreen, as this course is wide open.

And lastly, when school is in the course is closed to the public.
