Short But Sweet Angelica Creek 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ It's always nice to see a 9-hole course with a welcome board/course map and practice basket.
+ Bright colored eye-catching plastic 'next' clips attached to the bottom of each basket except 2(broken off) and 3(missing altogether).
+ Some nice natural features like pleasant hills and a creek through the middle of it all.

Cons:

- All tee signs were simple numbered flimsy plastic stakes in the ground. They are tall to be visible but have zero pertinent info.
- Tee areas were just dirt/mud with wooden beams to imply the general direction players ought to throw.
- About half of the fairways throw close to or directly cross over walking paths.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole here for looks and play is hole6 because it is a nice little bendy tunnel of trees and shrubs with a short hill on the left and the swift but serene Angelica Creek on the right. My least favorite hole is right after it. Hole7 is just a simple straight, flat and wide open throw right over a walking path.

As for the course as a whole, Angelica Park is a fun little romp. It's the kind of 9-hole course that you go to if you don't have a lot of time or are just passing through but still want a decent challenge in a quiet setting with some nice scenery. The titular creek gives the course some life and a dusting of tension when it is in play, and the gentle hills are just the right amount of steep to feel enjoyable and not overwhelming. Just be wary of other park goers during your round. There are several walking paths all over the course. As I was playing, there was always one or two other people roaming the grounds. Make sure you are aware of who is around before you throw.

Also, navigation might be a bit tricky. As usual, I try to use the uDisc map only as a last resort, and I did have to use it two or three times because the 'next' clips on the baskets only point the general direction a player should walk. After that, it is up to the player to spot the tall white plastic markers, and that's where the confusion might set in. And once you get where you need to go, mind the rough dirt of the tee areas. Recent weather might result in mud or ice, and some are uneven. Watch your footing. Yes, Angelica Park lacks in the infrastructure somewhat, but at a course this small and open, it matters less than it would at a wooded course or a larger 18-hole course.

Deficiencies aside, the nature of the holes themselves is familiar and pleasant. There were no big surprises or unexpected challenges. It is a straightforward and plain course with the good fortune to have a creek and effective elevation for its holes that barely exceed 350 feet, except for hole9.

The definition of short and sweet. Angelica Creek probably won't make a lasting impact on its players, but they won't leave disappointed.

Open, fast 9-holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Open and simple for beginners
-Change in pin position for hole #3 reduces risk of ending up in creek
-Very fast course as all holes are close to each other, easy to play it twice within 90 minutes
-Good use of what elevation is available
-A few tight technical shots (1 and 6) with some open bombers (7-9)
-Plenty of parking, but be careful not to park too close to hole 9. I've seen some close calls

Cons:

-Tee pads are sand with wood borders, getting very worn in. Not all of them still have the fiberglass post marking it's position
-No maps at tee pads
-Open course that is very susceptible to wind
-No bathroom or water available
-Difficult to find next tee if only because there are no markings except at sign at the parking lot

Other Thoughts:

Even though I didn't rate it higher than a 3, this is still one of my favorite courses as it plays very fast with a fair amount of variety. Once the tee pads are upgraded and signs are posted, I think it would deserve a solid 4. Awesome course to have on a university campus.

Imagine a nice 9 outside your classroom... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 17, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Played February 2020, and found the map by the first tee to be accurate, no construction around (these were mentioned in earlier reviews)

+ Nice setting on wooded park area of a college campus. A few walkers, and a few picnic tables, but I'm guessing this area is pretty much given over to disc golf traffic

+ Hole #1 makes good use of the widely-spaced trees in the fairway. There are straight, right and left slots to throw through

+ Elevation changes on hole #4 (up) and hole #5 (down). Hole #5 is a tight straight shot that finishes with the basket hard right and well down below the fairway level. The most open path is a right angle turn at the basket. If you cut the corner there's a chance you'll get buried in bushes blocking the green. It's a par 4 though: so straight, short shots get you a par

+ Hole #6 is 300' and slightly uphill, with an "S" shape through a narrow low ceiling created by a big tree. A good hole to challenge your ability to aim with care

+ Hole #8 is all about the big tree in the middle of the fairway. There's a fair amount of room to the right, for throwing a low RH hyzer to set up a birdie putt

+ Hole #9 is a long finisher, a 500'+ par 4 with the basket up a small rise near the parking lot

Cons:

- No pads; tee signs don't indicate lengths. Take a picture of the map at the first tee, or carry a rangefinder

Other Thoughts:

~ I admit I'm so jealous of a nice 9 holer on a college campus. But then, I probably would have never graduated

~ A recreational 9 holer that can help beginners develop their shots and understand course management. This course does what it does really well, and returns you to the parking lot when it's done

Solid Little College Good For A Nooner! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Angelica Park is on the campus of Alvermia University which is a Division III school in Reading. The small park circles around a creek. The first hole of the course is in the main part of the park, then you walk across the bridge to play 2-7 before heading back into the main part to finish with 8 & 9.

There is a nice big course map at the start. I like the very simple tee signs although I don't like where they are placed. (See Cons). These are, what I call, the campground signs. They are a simple plastic thin pole about a 1/4" thick x 3" wide, very flexible but probably indestructible. In state and national park campgrounds, these are used to number the campsites. The ones here just have the hole number. The pads here are natural and in good shape overall. Discatchers seem to be the basket of choice here in Pennsylvania.

# 1 is 270' through the trees.
# 2 is 262' with a short pad and the creek on your right.
# 3 is slightly downhill with one tree that you need to miss.
# 4 is a slight upward hole at 230'.
# 5 is 374' and there is currently at construction fence just to your left.
# 6 is a 302' hole which is flanked by a hillside on your left and the creek on your right and a big tree in the middle.
# 7 is 374' with a large tree standing tall.
# 8 is 253' that needs a little fade at the end.
# 9 is a long, 535' hole, playing back, which is more or less open.

Cons:

The # 1 Con is these wonderful little campground tee signs are set right at the left front corner of the tee pad so that they are in your head on every tee off. You can see evidence of where players have tried to move over to avoid them.

Really, I don't see any other problems. This is is just a nice, simple little rec course, nothing to get real turned on about and nothing to complain about either.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course for the college students to grab a quick round at or in the case today, a law enforcement instructor was catching a quick round on his lunch break. It's pretty average all together, doesn't seem to have any holes that you would remember a year from from now. Without my notes, I think I might have forgotten everything about the course since yesterday.

A Local Practice Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Goodsized parking lots right next to tee 1.
-On a University campus, nice area.
-Overall a Beginner-Intermediate feel in distance and obstacles.

Cons:

-Holes are pedestrian and repetitive near end.
-Faster moving creek can be a factor by holes 2, 3, and 6. Discs can be swept away.
-The next hole wasn't always obvious, particularly hole 2.
-Construction still ongoing as of December 2017 besides hole 5, beginning of 6.
-Tees are mostly dirt, not the greatest.

Other Thoughts:

Not a lot of people when I was there (December), I imagine it be more trafficked in late spring and autumn. The park itself is quite scenic and nice.

Tee 1 was around 40.310119, -75.929145 in google maps. Hole 1 starts right by the parking lot and has quite a few trees as obstacles. Tee 2 will be a little bit away, follow the street and cross the creek. It's a pretty straight throw. Tee 3 is a little uphill backtrack towards the street and a downhill shot. Hole 4 is uphill and shorter than 2011 map indicates.

Hole 5 looks considerably changed from the 2011 map and shifted over the path due to construction. Hole 6 is alongside the creek and a major loss potential. 7 is across the creek.

Tee 8 is a walk along the path and about as far from 7, as 2 was from 1. Straight distance shot, slightly downhill. Hole 9 is a distance shot slightly uphill, but shorter than 2011 map so that it no longer crosses the path. Good decision.

This is a nice local practice course, but nothing exciting.

Decent 9 hole course for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good hole set-up with minimal brush or trees in the way.
Located in a nice park in a great area by Alvernia.
Great difference in elevation on each hole.

Cons:

Construction on the road next to the course causes distractions and two of the tees have been cut in half.
Creek running through the middle of the course is a good water hazard but runs fast and can carry discs that may fall into it.

Other Thoughts:

After construction ends this course will be better to play. If I were in this area and was going to play a round or two of disc golf, I would go to Laurelain Park. It is better kept and more challenging to play

Fun 9 Hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very fun course. A bunch of holes that require shots around/through trees, and others that are wide open. Fairly equal mix of lefty and righty holes, so both will be pleased. tee boxes are alright, if you have decent footwear you will not struggle, although they are still dirt and you have to watch for falling walnuts!

Cons:

Course is maintained, although sometimes there are some shady people hanging around the course. I personally have met someone playing with one of my discs that I lost there. Just be on the lookout for anyone around you.

Other Thoughts:

I would love to know if there is anyone who is in charge of running any type of doubles tournament.. or anything through the college (Alvernia). I know they used to do things, and would be interested in partaking if they still host small events. if anyone has a contact with the college please let me know!

Tough to navigate. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 7, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets had the hole number on them which helped you at least know what basket to shoot at. Nice use of the land available. Also nice they have a practice basket. Good course for newbies like me.

Cons:

No tee boxes. In desperate need of some signs to help out the first timers. Some of the earlier reviews mentioned posts or something at the tee boxes but there is nothing really there anymore other than a big dirt patch. Not much of a fairway on #6.

Other Thoughts:

Ended up in the area for a function with my daughter and I had 2 hours to kill. I knew the course was nearby and decided to check it out. Saw the practice basket an some others near the parking lot but was unsure if I could find my way around. Luckily I ran into another player who helped out a little and told me where the second basket was. Holes 2,3 and 4 I found easy enough after crossing the creek. Hole 5 I could not find the tee box and walked all around until some other players told me where it was " the dirt spot up by the road". Hole six is easy to find from there but there is not much open area on 6 and it seems like it could be easy to lose a disc in the brush. The basket for hole 7 seems like it has been moved or I played it wrong. The basket for hole 7 was down near the tee spot for hole 8. You did not have to throw it over the creek like it shows on the course map here. Hole 8 was easy to find but on hole 9 I used a dirt patch that I do not think is really the tee box as it seems like the real tee box is really back further if you want to play this as a par 4. Probably not a course you would want to drive out of your way for. Not sure if they are planning on adding tee boxes or not. Looks like they tried to put ones in on #2 and #6 but they were a bit small.

Nice Nine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Open layout with enough trees in the park to keep each hole from being the same. Beginners to experts can play this course and have a good time. I took 4 first timers out to play this course and they enjoyed the round. The park was neatly groomed and kept free of trash.

Cons:

Dirt tee boxes with minimal signs to guide play. Hole 7 does not have a fairway through to the basket. A small tree row makes you use one throw just to get through. Maybe clear the under brush to be able to throw through to the basket. Hole 8 has a very slim fairway with a huge tree set in the middle. If you do not lay short next to the tree and end up in the rough you get to enjoy the thick picker vines. Wear long pants because if you throw into the rough anywhere on the course you will be in thick under brush loaded with picker vines.

Other Thoughts:

For a 9 hole course this is great fun and worth the play. Having the map is a must to keep you on track. The course was never busy and you can take as much time as you want to play.

Best course in Reading, PA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Never crowded
Descent variety of shots
Some holes are challenging/longer
3rd hole is there after being gone for a year so you have to play through twice to get 18 in
Nice baskets
Has holes where water comes into play
Wooded and open holes

Cons:

No tee pads
No signage (this is a problem that I assume will be taken care of in the future) so it is difficult to find your way around the first time playing but this course is not a destination course so people playing here will know where they are going the 2nd time out and everytime after that.
The first hole is right next to the road and then to get to the second hole you have to walk across the bridge to get to #2.

Other Thoughts:

With some care this course would be a great 9 hole course.
In the future I hope they will add 9 holes out on the wetlands to make it 18 since there is lots of space available.
Overall it is a nice course for people who live in the area.

Could easily be a lot better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is fine with a number of straight shots with some tree cover and a few along the creek. The creek is relatively shallow so there's no real worry unless you wear nice shoes.

Cons:

Dirt/mud tee pads that are mostly not marked at all. Nine posts are all it would take to save some headaches. I had to look at the map over and over to find them. Even them, apparently some have been moved and there's no good way to find out where to start without asking someone familiar with the course.

Other Thoughts:

This is only about 30 minutes from my house but since it's only 9 holes and it leaves a lot to desire, I won't be going out of my way to play here again. It's very sad that this is the only disc course anywhere near Reading.

Just Happy to Throw 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course makes good use of the space provided. While it's not a "destination course," the trees and water provide a mild challenge for beginners and experienced tossers alike. There is little elevation change and a chance to let one or two rip.
I'll give the park the benefit of the doubt and say that it is indeed beautiful. However, I visited after a considerable downpour and an unseasonably early snowstorm that downed several branches and even entire trees. The park was a bit of a mess, but I am certain it was my timing.

Cons:

Complete lack of signage. My cousin and I spent a good 10 minutes just figuring out the flow of the course and even then we threw from the wrong tee at the wrong basket. The only things you have to go by are the numbers on the basket, a neglected arrow directing you from basket one to tee two (You'll need it, so look for it), and at every "tee box" there is a wooden stake, but even then you aren't sure which tee is which.

Another review mentioned there are several opportunities to hit park-goers. It should also be mentioned, there are a couple spots where fellow tossers may be in the line of fire - particularly 8&9 can easily share a fairway. Speaking of which, the fairway is a serious water-collection area.

While it wasn't a big problem for me, the natural tees were a little awkward. Most notably was "tee" nine, which isn't natural, but a cement slab with four sneaky bolts sticking out of it. I'll leave it to you to guess how we figured that one out.

Other Thoughts:

After we had played through once, we enjoyed the course, but, even now, I'm not convinced we did it correctly.

The course info says it's be there for 2-3 years. I don't know the school's financial situation or the cost of such maintenance, but this course would benefit greatly from some simple signage. Even numbering the tees would be an improvement, which, at this point, could be done with a magic marker.

Despite its shortcomings, I was just happy to be able to throw so close to the city. I was visiting for the holidays and am always looking for new places to throw. I'll be back next year. I hope to see this park get some lovin'.

Pros:

compact 9 hole course can be played rather quickly, and is great for beginners, "got my wife to play" since were used to playing "French Creek" it is a nice "open" change. Few trees really but the baskets can be seen from almost every "T", although with a little risk comes better rewards. easy to navigate and very hard to lose a disc, you'd almost have to try to loose one. Also can be Safaried to add distance and make it play 18 holes, or do like i do, play it twice! Most holes play under 300 feet and easily reachable for birdies. #9 is long but very open, also a par 4.
i recommend this course to beginners and pros alike.

Cons:

no "T" pads, and short, 45-50 minutes to complete, although that could be a good thing for some.
Is just a little bit on the easy side, not a lot of challenge here but fun and can let it rip!!!!!

Other Thoughts:

practice basket near hole # 1.
Water from the creek plays in a few holes which is very cool. Not much in the way of elevation, but the elevation they have has been utilized very smartly.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice, new baskets. Navigation is relatively easy. Decent use of natural terrain, including a babbling stream.

Cons:

Lots of opportunities for people to be in the way. The course was also pretty damp, even after a few days of sun. No signage, aside from the bare minimum (more below). Natural tees only, mostly in poor shape.

Other Thoughts:

The course is nice enough, for what it is - a town park course. The tees need work, but the layout isn't too bad. It's not a destination course, but if you're in the area it's a fun way to spend a couple hours. There's a stream that cuts through the course, coming into play directly or indirectly on about half the holes.

The course isn't difficult to find, per se; I did however start walking it backwards to find out where everything was, as there was absolutely no signage. The tees are marked by a short stick with a red flag and number; that's the only indication. The course starts further into the park - past where the road curves left, rather than just when you come in. The basket you can see when you come in belongs to hole #7.

Better tees and some improved signage would better this town course a lot. However, enjoy it for what it is, and don't expect too much.

Pleasant Play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

New baskets. Near amenities. Easy to enjoy, for Beginners to Advanced alike.

Cons:

Single (natural) tee/basket. Plenty of opportunities for non-players to be in the way (many picnic tables along fairways, kids playing near stream, walkers crossing bridge). Course below road-level, much of it between the road and the stream, so wetness could be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays in a pretty public park, fairly flat, low-cut grass, a smattering of large hardwoods, with a shallow stream and its nearby brush-growth running through the park. The first four holes are nice but somewhat similar - ~275', small number of hardwoods to miss, what elevation there is (the bank of the road) coming into play - and the creek, ever so subtly, too. Number-5 is long-n-flat until the end, when the basket is down and right, protected by trees. Number-6 is fun - choose between a wide right-turner, or throw over some high brush and follow the stream, dropping to the left at the end. Number-7 is back over the creek, needing to clear the brush early, and some large trees in the background late. A flat, hardwood-littered hole greets you at #8, and longest-hole #9 has you throw across an open field, with trees to mis both early and late.

Navigation: Fairly easy - look for the wooden posts painted orange on top. Course flows in a clockwise direction. Tee-2 is on the other side of the stream from basket-1 - cross the road's bridge to reach it. Tee-7 plays back over the creek, near the park's pedestrian bridge.

A relaxing, fun play, with the hardwoods and stream providing some challenge and nice ambiance. Worth a visit if travelling nearby.

Pros:

9 holes with Discatcher baskets. Baskets are in excellent condition. Posts at tees have distance of hole and hole 5 has flight path drawn on post since you can't see the basket. All other baskets can be seen from the tee. Just enough trees in the way to make the holes not open. Great amateur course. Pros may get bored here as holes are not very long. Holes 1-8 require controlled drives. Hole 9 is a 570 ft. bomber hole. Need 2 good throws to have a chance for a birdie 3. If you do throw in the creek, disc retrieval should not be a problem, creek is clear and not very deep.

Cons:

Tee pads are natural marked with posts in ground. Tees get muddy after rain. Some holes throw over or near picnic tables. Only one place to possibly get confused. From hole 1 basket you need to go to the right past hole 9 tee and across the creek for number 2 tee. Some holes crossover and/or get too near other holes. Nobody else playing on the course anytime I was there though.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 6 is the signature hole. I could play that hole all day. If you wanna go straight at the basket, you need to carry the creek 230 ft. If you don't want to carry the creek, bailout is on left. Hole 7 also crosses the creek. You have to decide if you want to lay up short of the creek or go for the gusto on your drive. If the tees get upgraded to some rubber pads, this course could be a 3.5 star course. I would recommend playing this course if in the area. This course will only get better.

Angelica: a "Rugrat" of a course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 holes with all new DIScatcher baskets, very bright and easy to see from all the tees. Not hard to work your way around. A little elevation but no serious drops or hills. Several holes play around the Angelica Creek, a tributary of the nearby Schulykill. The creek is shallow enough to retrieve errant tosses without a major hassle on your hands. Lots of birdie chances with a long hole to round out your day, and the course doesn't play hand favorites. Quite wooded in some areas but there are no "pinball" type holes. The course is good for lesser experienced and smaller arms while not boring for the better players. One pro par 4.

Cons:

For now, the tees are natural, and being in December here it'll probably be at least March, if not later, to see flypads or something a little better. Some holes had a light rock base. The signage can be improved just a bit but is better than most places. Holes 1, 8-9 will be the most prone to flooding in heavy rains.

Other Thoughts:

For the first course in the Reading area, you can't really complain. Several holes stood out in my mind: How tight hole 4 will be in the midst of the summer season and seven with the choice for smaller arms of laying it up or going for it. Hole 6 reminds me a little bit of the old 4th at Unami Creek Park, where it plays over a majority of the creek with a creekside pin location. Nice job to Jon and Jeff on the first course in the immediate Reading vicinity!
