Good Course, But Forgotten. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-24 Holes, Plenty of mix of longs, shorts, up hill, rolling hill, down hill....etc.
-plenty of parking, and starts and ends at the main entrance welcome building.
-paper maps and scorecards inside.
-concrete tees are in good shape for the most part.

Cons:

-im guessing they made 18 holes (quickly), and then expanded it to 24 and really didn't make any upgrades other than teepads and baskets.
-none of the teepads have signs, so you need the map to find them.( you will look at it the whole time)
-wooded baskets are not cleared out, definitely forgotten about. (#13 has a trash bag over it with a wasps nest inside)
-im glad there is a map inside, but the scorecard is for 18 only, the old 18.

Other Thoughts:

Although there are more cons than pros, I do like this course a lot. It's just an obvious add on to this resort, and not a featured thing. You have to use the map, you won't be able to navigate without it. I'd love to see teesigns and some better directions to next tees.

Lastly, the wooded holes are fun, but someones gotta tend the weeds and brush out there; otherwise it's impossible to play as a single without a spotter.

Extra Activity For The Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Finding this park was pretty easy . Finding all of the pads wasn't . When you pull into the park ( have your map handy or supposedly go to the office and they will give you one , or you will never find all of the tees ) you will see decent cement tee pads immediately to your right . These will be the tee pads for hole #1 . You might not need the map for the first few holes , but will later . The area was well mowed when I played and it looks like they care about the Cedar Lakes property . The baskets are in good shape , but no tee signs at any hole , so the opportunity to miss holes is there if you can't read your map . Rest rooms are located near the front of the park . No benches or trash receptacles . Cedar Lakes and the course were very clean , so so carry in and out , please . The first hole will warm you up in a hurry, a wide open 488' from the longs and 340' from the shorter tees . Hole 2 is not quite as long , but it fades a little left and into a long wise row of trees to make you prove accuracy . 3 is another open bomber hole that has easily avoidable rough on your right , and a basket sitting in an interesting spot with a small hill and brush guarding it on the left and trees behind it . Navigation skills come into play after this . The next tee pad you see and will be inclined to go to will actually be on your left and #6 . To find #4 you have to go to the other side of a pool or tennis court that sits on the other side opposite 6 . If there are kids sports going on people will park in the fairway , so you may have to tee off from the shorts and throw over a car towards the side of a 1 story building . 5 is close to it , on your right , a short throw with avoidable water on your left . Now you cross the street and go to 6 , a short drive across a road where you have to keep it low because of some trees . Time to examine the map again . Hole 7 is behind the rows of 1 story buildings on your right . Enjoy the elevation for these next 3 holes because it is all this place offers . 7 is an uphill drive with some brush and trees to your right to your immediate left is tee 8 , another uphill but 100' longer at 388' . #9 , a signature hole finalist , is a downhill drive 358' , to a basket placed on a ledge of a lake to the right and a dropoff to the left . Great hole . If you were going to throw from the shorts , there was some growth right in front of the tee that is not supposed to be there . It might affect your drive .After 9 , it's goodbye elevation . 10 short is a narrow throw next to the lake that sits away from where you just putted , on your far left . You might be able to throw over part of the lake from the longs if people aren't fishing or lounging there . #11 tee is a big question mark . It was the only hole where I couldn't find EITHER tee pad . If you look across the street into a group of trees , you will see the 11 basket . I threw from the street and went right to left for the basket .. Nice basket placement , though . 12 , 13 & 14 wrap around the buildings with mainly straight but sometimes obstruction in the fairways or on the side . #15 is my other signature nominee . a long drive with a row of trees and some brush on your left and brush, trees and a creek behind it on your right . The fairway gives you enough room that if you control your drive , and clear the treeline on your left , it opens up to a large area in which to approach/putt to an elevated tee on a mound . Great hole . #16 looks like it was just stuck in there , across the street next to the putt putt and in front of the office on their lawn . You cross the street and realize that you are throwing away from a historic bridge that should sit behind you on your drive , under a canopy of trees , with a fence and road dangerously close on the right side of the tee . #18 turns around and goes right back the other way with this bridge on your left , over 300' for shorts and over 400' for the longs , the a pond on your left just past the bridge . Very picturesque . You get to pass the pond and walk through this covered bridge after you finish #18 , a great finishing touch . A shame that so many people , even when signs are on both ends of the bridge imploring them not to , disfigure the inside of it with graffiti. there looks to be extra baskets in the back of the park where the elevation is , maybe when events are taking up some or all of 10-18 .

Cons:

Okay . several gripes . #1 . No signs , either telling you the layout of your throws with distance and par , or NEXT TEE signs to direct you to your next tee pad . My only guess would be that these tees are flush with the ground and make it easy to cut the grass . I did see 2 people on large mowers cutting while I was playing . If you do not have a map , GOOD LUCK . You will be so confused , especially after 3 , that you might want to give up . There is a good map on DGR , or their office but you will have to use it a bunch . This layout would confound Lewis & Clark . #2 where was the tee pad to 11 ? #3 no real gripe to me , but no benches and no trash cans around the course . Carry in and carry out . #3 . cars can park either on the fairways or possibly on the tees , especially in places like #4 , #10 , #12 . you might have to safari a hole or 2 . #4 . Lots of People use this park . You might have people fishing or wandering on and off the fairways . Please be careful and conscientious when throwing in these areas , especially 4,5,6,9,10,11,12,16,17,& 18 . #5. lots of roads either right next to the tee pad , or throwing across the street could cause a drive to hit a car , #6 some filler holes, maybe fun for families or newbies , but not for discers that play a lot . Maybe some of these holes are for campers and Cedar Lakes wants the casual players and not the seasoned ones ( why the longer tee pads , then ? ) . #7 buildings can come into play and hit from a slightly wayward drive on some of the holes . #8 , some of the flat parts of the park may accumulate water and saturate fairways after a rain .

Other Thoughts:

The park staff is friendly , this area is very popular with the locals , as I saw birthday parties and family gatherings and even some older gentleman displaying his 1924 ford , driving it around and promoting some type of car show or assembly ( NICE CAR ) . This would be more of a course for the locals , but a decent one . I don't know how much property that Cedar Lakes extends to in the back , but the could have let Johnny Sias , the course designer work some of his magic with the elevation and water near #9 . This is definitely not a destination course , but still a fun stop if you are in the Ripley area and have a couple of hours to kill . At least play 15 , 16 , 17 & 18 just so you can walk that cool covered bridge . Not a must play , but a MAYBE PLAY .

Watch out for geese 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tees for different arms. Water and roads make for good challenging OB without too much punishment.
Clean course. Flush tee pads

Cons:

Never found hole 11 tee and ended up making one up that worked nicely. No tee signs or direction to next tee.

Other Thoughts:

Cedar Lakes is a great course for both beginner and advanced players. The layout is great staying away from most of the camp any campers present. The biggest problem is the lack of tee signs. As mentioned the tee pads are flush which is nice but if the grass has any length to it it makes it tough to find the tee pads. overall a good course and looking forward to playing it again sometime

Tricky or poorly planned? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Open with plenty of challenges (not all designed). Longer holes for the big throwers out there. Course takes you on a nice tour of the park since it travels around the entire outer ring. Multiple pads on most holes.

Cons:

3 foot grass on holes 1-3. A couple holes with large trees directly in front of hole on line from tee. Missing tees due to parking, No signs for holes so you need the map, which is a bit suspect. Plays through playground and picnic areas so watch for traffic.

Other Thoughts:

Bring a spotter (or a good hunting dog) for the long grass. Course starts right at the entrance, get map from office building.

Its still disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Concrete Tees
-Nice Baskets (Innova)

Cons:

No signage

Map given at help desk is off with many of the holes.

Very crowded park

Out of 18 holes I could play 9, I couldn't find hole 11 at all with the map and several other holes had become parking lots. The blue tee for #10 was under a car.

While I was there, the grass on many of the fairways was quite high

Most of the shots are very short and open.

Other Thoughts:

It is still disc golf but keep in mind that it would be better to go at a time when less people are there, maybe in the winter. I would recommend going with someone who already knows the course to avoid confusion. It may b e called Cedar Lakes but the lake does not play a huge role in the design of the course.

Hidden gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pull into the main building as soon as you turn in. They will give you the vitals.
You will need one disc for every throw imaginable.
Water is there but never too much of a factor unless beginner.
Mostly flat but creative measures taken to get elevation changes.
Stunning and clean park.
Well maintained.
No blind shots.

Cons:

Course lacks signage.
Drove around park a few times to find hole one.
A lot of pedestrians and vehicles.
Poison ivy.

Other Thoughts:

Hidden away in western west va, it is a gem. I don't know that I'll ever have a chance to get back out there and that saddens me. This would be a Course I would detour to every drive down that way. But the mountain you have to drive through to get to it makes you work for it. I wish all my dg friends could get a chance to play this well thought out and manicured course.

Be careful of others 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

* Two nice concrete baskets for each hole with distances painted on them
* Very nice Innova baskets
* Beautiful setting in a park/conference center with a variety of other activities (see cons - other)
* Good distance on a number of holes.
* Decent flow from hole to hole (but, may need a map in a few areas)
* A few benches/trash cans/bathrooms around course
* Course is well taken care of. Nice, recently mowed fairways (except where a great deal of water remained from recent heavy rains)
* About 8 minutes from Interstate 77 - if anyone is traveling and wants to stop for a round
* Good use of the available area, including limited use of the hills on the back side of the park.
* Very scenic park with a few ponds, covered bridge, old log homes
* Many, many other activities - mini golf, baseball field, sand volleyball, tennis, basketball, pool, horseshoe pits, fishing, walking, jogging, biking, picnic areas and more

Cons:

* Beware, beware of other park users. Walkers, fisherman, bicyclists, horse shoes players, etc. etc. etc. may/will be in your way! I believe this is a prime location for locals to come on nice evenings and on the weekends. During the day would be the best time to use this course. I also had to improvise holes because of vehicles and people near the baskets. Hole 10, which is a nice hole beside the lake has a picnic table about 10 feet from the basket, Hole 11 is very near a prime parking spot when activities are going on and another hole has two horseshoe pits within 10 feet of the basket.
* Not a great deal of difficulty with the pin placement. A few shots require precision, but most are in the open or a few hazards.
* Also, as mentioned in a previous review, there is a very large (~100) flock of Canadian Geese that call this place home and beside the droppings they leave all over the course the can become aggressive if they have young ones near.
* When I played this year, it was after a recent period of very heavy rain and a few holes were swampy and one almost unplayable.
* No direction to next tee from the baskets
* A good bit of poison is around several holes and baskets.
* No tee pads for hole 11 - you just play from the sidewalk or road. Be careful of cars parked near the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I come to Cedar Lakes once a year for a conference and look forward to playing this course. As, mentioned in the review I much rather enjoy playing it during the days than the evening (but, can't necessarily do that as much as I like) The parks primary focus is not disc golf and, even though it seems to be an after thought, at least they have it and maintain it. The office staff is very friendly and they have score cards and maps. You should print a map or pick one up as a few holes will be difficult to find with out one. You may not want to go a great distance to play this course, but, if you were in the area it would be good to check out. If you have your family with you there are plenty of other activities for them while you golf.

Nothing else to do 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

free to play, no one else was on the course, grass kept at good playing height, multiple tee locations. Discs available to purchase, although not of name brand or quality.

Cons:

There's a flock of geese by the pond (I almost decapitated one of them) and unavoidable feces unless your a pro. Vehicles were parked between the tee and pin forcing me to create a tee. Lots of people, pets, and vehicles to avoid.

Other Thoughts:

This course was definitely an after thought when this park was opened. There are few challenging holes and several that are simply straight shots with no elevation change.

Absolutely get a course map from the office by holes 1 and 16. Some tees and pins are difficult to locate even with the map in hand.

Eighth Wonder of the World 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 9, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two teepads per hole, flush with the ground. Distance painted onto teepad.

Cons:

No signs at teepads, so difficult to find - MUST have the map. A few baskets play close to walking paths, parking lot (long tee #10 is in the middle of a parking lot!), fishing pond, outdoor meeting area, buildings, road, etc.

Other Thoughts:

Most of the course plays along the outer edge of the property forming the Cedar Lakes Convention Center, "composed of a large variety of guest lodging styles with indoor meeting spaces. Cedar Lakes Conference Center provides year-round facilities in a natural setting that enhances any type of program - educational, inspirational, or recreational" , although some the middle holes play near buildings and other parts of the facility.

Other than up-slope on #7, up-n-over slope on #8, and then downhill/across field on #9, the course is quite flat. From the short tees, the distances range from 200'-350', averaging about 250', while from the long tees, which, well, mostly just add length (on only about four holes do the long tees also change the look angle), the distances range from 225'- nearly 500', averaging about 330'. Never did find tee #11 - used the manhole cover for the long tee, and from a gap in the fence near the water for the short tee. The long tee for #16 is behind the CEDAR LAKES sign. Fair blend of left/straight/right shots needed off the tee, with more rights early, and the lefts more prevalent toward the end. #13 is a classic either/or - basket about 225', clump of trees 50' in front of basket.

Favourite holes: #15 is a long, slow left-turner, with a tree-lined river to your right, and a line of flowering trees to your left. While the fairway on #18 is big, flat, and wide, the left turn at the end places the basket near a small amount of water, and a red-painted covered-bridge behind and to the right - very picturesque!

Suitable for a wide range of players, from beginners (hopefully avoiding people and water) to advanced (plenty of birdie opportunities from the short tees, plenty of challenging shots from the longs)

The title? The distance on every hole ends with an '8'!

Cedar Lakes Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are both short and long tee pads for every hole. All pads are concrete pads. Great view of the lakes and various water sources. Some great open field shots for bomb shots. With the different pads, it allows from beginner to experts to still be challenged.

Cons:

Not a great variety of shots available, with most of the shots on level playing field. Hole 2 has a large tree lying across the flight path. Hole 9 Has many discs in the adjacent lake.... Hole 11 has no official launch pads, with the long tee being the triangular shaped part of the sidewalk beside the road, and the short tee being another patch of sidewalk with little white marks at its edge. Many shots are alongside water and if you throw RHBH and happen to flip your disc, your going swimming.

Other Thoughts:

During the holiday season, especially now near christmas(2009-2010), sponsor signs have blocked and altered many of the shots that would have been taken otherwise with the signs not present. Hopefully they'll disappear once the holidays do :) all in all, out of the 5 or so courses i've played, it is a good course- worth playing. I'd place cedar lakes in my top 3.

Cedar Lakes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 16, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is spread throughout a park. There are long distance tee pads and short distance tee pad. You get an opportunity to navigate around trees, buildings and water sources.

Cons:

The water sources and trees make it easy to loose disk. My husband and I have gone fishing for our disk many times now. I think its hole 11 there is not a launch pad easily seen. But the launch pad for it is on the side walk barely marked with white chalk or paint marks.

Other Thoughts:

Right now there is a tree that fell at hole two and it makes it virtually impossible to make it in one or two throws.
