In Dire Need of Salvation

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 holes with baskets in older but fair condition. Course plays behind a large church with challenging fairways. Fairway grass was cut. Lots of distance and accuracy needed to score well here. Tees are natural, but not heavily used, and ample run up is given.

Cons:

This is a big arm course. Now, other than that, off the fairway was incredibly thick and overgrown, and the edge of the lake is NOTHING like the pictures here on the site. Could have been a time of year thing, but anything on the back side of 4/5 if it was left was either wet or had grass/weeds stomach height. In the back by 6/7 was also overgrown. 9 was partially unplayable due to a pumpkin patch sale held by the church (I just played as close to 1's tee as I could and got out of there.

Other Thoughts:

You'll need your backup discs and a lot of faith if you're going to play this course and not have at least 350' plus distance and good control. I'm hoping that this was just more of a "this time of year" course status (that exists in S FL) rather than an all year thing. I wouldn't mind seeing shorter pads (even like concrete buttons or something) so those not as good could enjoy. I really wanted to give this course at least a two. Sadly, my faith in this course has waxed cold.

You Gotta Have Faith To Tackle This Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

You gotta have faith you can fling it about 325', minimum. You gotta have faith that you can avoid the lake that borders # 4 for about 200'. You gotta have faith that you can stay on the fairways and avoid the jungles that line these long fairways. You gotta have faith that you can somehow miss the parked cars that just might block your intended flight path.

The Community of Hope United Methodist Church is not your typical little church nine hole course, not with three Par 4's and three very legitimate Par 5's. This is a big boy course playing through and over parking lots, by trailers and other vehicles, beside a lake and a canal and has a couple of 90 degree fairways lined with thick Florida jungle rough.

I happened to meet Jim, the course designer and guru, and in the course of our conversation I mentioned that I had found this course on DGCR. He had never heard of DGCR and was intrigued that all this information about his course was on this piece of paper (course information sheet and map) that I had. He was also interested, and somewhat disappointed, in the course's rating of 2.29 based on the ratings of seven reviewers. Having not yet played the course, I explained to him that 2.5 is average and 2.29 is a decent rating for a nine hole course with natural tees that appears to play over and around parked vehicles, parking lots and some small buildings. He also moved his pick-up which was directly in my flight path on hole # 1. There are plans to build another nine in back where the church has recently acquired the neighboring property. This church must employ talented professional landscapers. The grounds are lovely. You feel like you're staying at an expensive resort.

The course starts in the wooded area next to the church. The tees are natural and are very functional. The signs are old school fiberglass kind which always get trashed in any public park setting. Here on the church property, they have escaped any vandalism. The baskets are standard DGA models.

Hole 1 is a 438' Par 4, playing through the trees, possibly over Jim's pick-up and around a utility/concessions type trailer. The par 3, # 2, is 386' and plays over a large parking lot, a landscaped berm and a large church sign. I didn't particularly care for # 3 or 4. # 4 is 458' and has a canal on your right and I was forced to skip one throw there were cars parked in the way. # 4 is way hard. It's 696', starts off down a fairly narrow fairway between a church building and a fence and then plays down another stretch of fairway with the lake on your left for 300' or so. There was way too much of a chance and drowning a disc here for me.

Cons:

I asked Jim who was the course designed for? Church youth groups? Beginner church members to play after church on Sundays? He said the course is designed as a community course. As other reviewers have mentioned, the course is too long and daunting and treacherous for any beginner or most recreation players. But intermediate players probably won't play here, there are other more attractive 18's nearby. So I kind of see this course as having no real playing audience.

Natural tee lads.

Holes playing over parking lots and the probably chance of parked vehicles.

I consider 700' holes to be a con here.

A good chance your disc will find water.

Some holes have shared fairways but I don't think you would often have to share them as I doubt that this course would get much play.

Other Thoughts:

As you drive down Okeechobee Boulevard to reach the church, you realize that you must be in heart of the bible belt. They are several mega-type church along the street here and another being built right across the street. Maybe, they'll all put in disc golf courses?

If I were the boss here, I'd chop this course up into 18 shorter rec holes, I'd eliminate the water dangers, eliminate the long holes playing over the parking lots and strive to build a fun little rec course that my church members could enjoy.

Hardest Church Course This Reporter Has Ever Seen! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

With hole lengths ranging from 301-725 feet, this isn't your standard recreational church course. Throw in some weird hole shapes, water hazards, and poor navigation and this course becomes a nightmare for rec and beginner throwers.

Advanced/pro types might like the length and difficulty here. MIGHT, I say. That's not to say that this is a terrible course. It has nice baskets, ok tee signs, and well-marked grass tees. And I'm guessing that this course doesn't get played a lot, so you probably will have the whole course to yourself if you come to throw it. I think that it also suffers from having two much better courses nearby.

Cons:

The course could certainly benefit from a redesign, and concrete tee pads would be a nice addition.

Other Thoughts:

Bag it if you must, but if down here on vacation I would recommend the much better Commons Park or even better yet the nearby Okeeheelee Park course before this one.

Comm. of Hope UMC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has tee signs with par and distance

Natural tees were flat and fair to drive from

Mostly open holes with good use of water hazards

Had whole course to myself on a Saturday morning

Maintained

Cons:

Shared fairways of holes 1&9 and 5&7

Unfair fairways of holes 3, 4, 5, and 9

Overgrown area near the pond at hole 5

Difficult course for a beginner

Other Thoughts:

A good, challenging course on church grounds that is probably too challenging for the beginner because of the long holes that have water hazards and some require throwing straight. The church did well with what the property they have but I think it could be designed better. When entering the property, #1 tee and #9 basket is to the left of the main building.

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are plenty of chances to air it out here. A ton of open space and some very long holes. Experienced players might get a kick out of the unorthodox hole shapes. You can bomb it, and try to land the disc in ways you have never really done before. It's a unique course to say the least. And they definitely used all the land that was available.

Cons:

The pins are basically set at the corners of the property, to give each hole the longest length possible. I'm not sure who this course is appropriate for. Experienced players will find that every throw is not a golf shot. It won't really test them in any way besides distance. At the same time, the hoels are way too long for newer players. It really seems as if the course would be tedious for any possible skill level.
The exceptions are holes 1 and 9, which basically use the same fairway or lack there-of. The two tees face each other down a cross a pinball alley of trees.
And then there is four. An absurdly long hole, approaching 500 feet, the entire fairway is a dirt road with a canal on the right. At the end, the basket is just to the left of the road.

Pros:

Technical course, good layout for the land that is used, good use of the lake, well rounded course on all skills and levels, and the staff at the church is very nice and helpful if you get turned around they will help you.

Cons:

No benches, no trash cans, needs a better marker to show where hole one is and needs more maps and scorecards.

Other Thoughts:

The hole course has been redone. All new layout and all brand new baskets. The church did what they could with the land they have and the course can become very challenging at times. All and all its a great course i will return to play. I also happen to know the person who donated the the baskets and funded the new redone course, and he is hoping to do more and make the course even better.

Not worth the trip.... 2+ years

Pros:

Any course is a good course. Good beginner course. Short holes. Will not drive there again bc of closer options. This part of state is in need of a nice championship layout. This one isn't it.

Cons:

Not worth a drive, maybe if your local other wise go to any course.

Pros:

This little gem of a course offers a nice quick round of 9 holes. All the baskets have been replaced with new chainstar baskets. The course is well done with the amount of land they had to use. Good use out of the retention lake, seeing as you really never HAVE to throw over it. A very unique course for having holes that follow dirt roads, turn dogleg right, and good signage.

Cons:

The score cards do not have all the par info and new yardage.

No benches

No cart girl... lol

Other Thoughts:

The course with a few improvements could be a great course out there. Very nice job on replacing the baskets

Pros:

Quite place I saw no one at all. The staff that is inside the building is very friendly. They have small maps of teh course as well as score crads and pencials.Holes 4 and 5 are very long both par 5. The alow to to open up while holes 2 and 3 are very short par 3. Although most of the course is open holes 6-8 are wooded and are a nice change of pace. Hole9 has a creative gazebo ending.

Cons:

Only 9 holes and although the baskets are cool and well made some of teh chains are a little heavy and will knock a small disc out. Could be a little longer but a nice clean 9 hole course.

Other Thoughts:

I was informed tht wendsdays 4:30-6:00 younger mambers of the church play with the pastor I am not religious but was invited nun the less. Sweet little course.
