Sleeper Knoxville area course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful multi-use park with amenities such as indoor restrooms.
- Challenging and rewarding wooded course that calls for a variety of shots. I can't recall the last time I used as many different discs in my bag.
- Good signs. Good teepads.
- Separate front 9 and back 9 loops.
- Very close to the interstate.
- Likely won't be crowded with disc golfers.

Cons:

- Course starts out with a pretty serious water carry. Unlike The Fort down the road,
- The downside of it being a nice park means that one needs to be constantly aware of other park goers (trail runners/walkers, fishers, people playing games, etc) and traffic as the course weaves around the roads (or vice versa).
- A few of the pars are a bit soft, if you care about that sort of thing.
- The yellow Discatcher baskets blend in really well and are hard to see in the woods.
- The course is a little raw. There aren't really defined fairways. Some people love that. Some might not.
- I tend to ding courses for poor navigation. Roane County gets a pass because I was playing with a friend that had played it a few times. I can see a few holes being confusing. Look at a map.

Other Thoughts:

Course starts out with a relatively lengthy water carry. Unlike #8 at the Fort down the road, there is a lay up option or there is a spot where you can shorten your first shot of the day a bit and tee from the sidewalk.

I love this course. It doesn't get a lot of mention in the Knoxville community, but it might be my favorite Knoxville area course. I think it is the kind of course that gets better after you play it a few times and start to figure out your lines and disc choices. Given the location, this is my new default woods course recommendation for anyone traveling I-40 East into Knoxville. I didn't enjoy the Fort nearly as much, but these courses pair nicely.

Apparently they do move pins around. So be sure and pay attention to pin location.

Challenging Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This 18-hole course is constructed in a popular multi-use park. Good elevation changes throughout the course along with some tricky sloping greens and water in play on a couple of holes. There is not a lot of variety in hole lengths which vary from 225' to 420' with 13 of the holes playing between 245' and 350'.

All holes are wooded. A few are somewhat open but most are pretty well in trees most of the way. However the ground is clear with little brush, so tracking down shots that kick off of trees is not too much of a chore.

The course crosses and re-crosses the park roads and a walking path several times. Many of the holes have OB on either one or both sides that is defined by these features.

Holes 3 and 4 require big sweeping left-to-right drives to follow the fairway to the basket. On both holes you are throwing blind around the corner.

Most of the holes are variations of straight (but not tunnels) or gentle right/left turns through trees to the basket. Some very good up and down variation with occasional sidehill placements.

Excellent concrete teepads on every hole, along with Innova DisCatcher baskets take care of the beginning and end of each hole. I saw alternate basket mounts on most holes, and at least four holes had a second basket in place. Tee signs were decent with distance, par, and a crude hole diagram. While the hole diagram did a good job of defining the OB on relevant holes, it lacked other useful detail (see cons).

Cons:

The course crosses and re-crosses a paved path and roads, and navigation could be better. Some "next tee" signage or at least an arrow at the basket would be appreciated. Taking a picture or copy of the course map will save you some wandering.

The tee signs all had a similar hole diagram showing a open teardrop shaped fairway and green surrounded by a dense grid of trees. While they hinted that the hole generally played straight or to the left/right they bore very little resemblance to the actual hole.

At least four holes had a second basket mounted, while the tee signs showed only a single location/hole length. This was somewhat confusing from the tee as I had no idea which was the "official" basket.

Roads and a busy walking trail winds throughout the course, and are in play on many hole. Even on a weekday morning I found myself waiting the drive on several holes.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 is a heck of a starting hole. It appears to require about a 300' water carry with no option. I dunked my first drive, went to the drop zone and played on. After my round I went back to see if there was a reasonable option. Turns out that there is a small bail-out zone to the left that is blind from the tee due to trees and brush. I played the hole a second time to that landing area and parred it pretty routinely. Not obvious to the first timer!

Roane County Park DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great use of the land at the park with water and elevation in play. Nice tee signs, concrete tee pads, a course sign, multiple pins, and discatcher baskets.

Cons:

Not really a con but I would love to eventually see permanent baskets at each pin placement so you can choose which layout you want to play on each visit.

Other Thoughts:

Roane County Park DGC (known by RoCo to locals) is a heavily wooded course in Harriman, TN. This isn't a course you hear a ton about but in my opinion it is somewhat of a hidden gem. This isn't a course that you want to take a long road trip to hit, but if you were to find it in travels, you will be pleasantly surprised. Some long tight fairways where shot shaping is key. This course is at a beautiful park where there is water in play on several holes. The elevation at the park was definitely used in the designing of this course as well. Nice concrete tee pads, tee signs, a course sign, and discatcher baskets. In addition to this, there are multiple pin placements for each hole so you could play a different layout on a second visit if you end up there when the baskets have been moved. No real complaints about this course besides the fact that a few of the holes are a little too unforgiving with an overwhelming amount of trees in your fairways.Other than that, this is definitely a course you need to play if you are near the area! A Professional, Not Recreational Wooded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 20, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This wooded course is challenging, yet fair. The hole lengths average around 325'-350' and drives require tight lines for the most part, so walking away with a 2 on any hole here feels good.

Adding to challenge is road OB that comes into play on multiple holes, along with water OB on 3 holes.

There's an even mix of par 3 and par 4 length/layout type holes, making for nice diversity and thus demanding a strong upshot game. I was sidearming my harp and backhanding my BB aviar regularly while playing decent golf.

The teepads are appropriately sized and placed very well, so there's never an issue of awkward run-up (no steep drop off from the back if you prefer a longer run-up, and no concern of falling off the end of the pad as they sit close to flush with the ground.

And even though the teepads are close to flush with the ground, there's never an issue of muddy, slick teepads.

There's a healthy mix of RHBH and RHFH drives, making for equal challenge between left and right handed throwers.

The course is kept clean. There are trashcans near a few tee areas.

I've never seen the course overcrowded with golfers.

2 course layouts (2 potential places a basket can be on each hole) a few holes at the moment even have 2 baskets in place simultaneously.

Cons:

There's some drainage issues on a few holes so things can be pretty muddy after it rains, but again the pads tend to stay pretty clean.

There are just a couple holes that some people including myself argue need some fine tuning as certain fairways are a little too densely wooded. On the other hand the holes that seem to have trees in the way of a clear line are ones that are longer and considered par 4.

The practice basket is on a slope which isn't necessarily a bad thing as the course's greens are often on a slope, but a lot of people tend to ignore this basket and practice on hole 9's much flatter green, which can interrupt other people in the middle of their round.

The course layout is hard to decipher the first time around. There's good flow to the course and the holes aren't far apart, but again newer players often find themselves wondering where next hole is with there being a road between several holes and a lack of arrows or directional help on the course. To aid in this a sign has been erected near the start of the course with a picture of the course layout.

Other Thoughts:

There's a really friendly local community of players that come together to play doubles on Sundays. Don't hesitate to get in on the action, they are very welcoming.

Watch for cars and pedestrians as again the road comes into play on several holes, and there's a walking path that runs along fairways and behind baskets.

For those who aren't strong swimmers keep in mind that if you throw a disc in the water, there is a very abrupt and deep drop off after maybe 10-20 feet in a lot of areas.

Flat course, enjoyed. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

*This course is new with great tee pads
*Maps provide distance, direction(sorta) and par.
*Main entrance map of all 18
*Couple short, couple long, with a mix of par 4 makes for a good mix of holes.
*Terrain was very easy to walk and find discs
*Tees were close by.
*Lots of shade

Cons:

*Couple water hazards
*Hole 1 is a 300ft throw across water; no thanks.
*Maps were slightly off in direction and pin locarion
*More traffic than a normal DG course around holes

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this course and want to bring my buddies back to try it out. There is a small learning curve for a first visit, not as bad as other courses. I thought the terrain was well suited for a course that is a little different then nearby courses.

The best wooded course in the Knoxville area

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Roane Count Park is a solid, challenging course. From the first hole, throwing over water, to the last one, throwing in woods, you get a challenge for 18 holes.
- This is a mostly wooded course. The first four holes are the most open ones on the course, but don't let that fool you. You're going to have to start dodging trees for the rest of your round.
- Even with that, there's a good amount of variety here. You have to deal with water on #1 ,2 & 13, then you've got a little bit of everything after that. There are some great holes with good elevation - #5 (slight downhill), #6 (down and up) & #8 (slight uphill). This also leads up to #13 (down and up, and down again to a basket next to the water), which is easily the course's most challenging hole, and I think, its signature one as well.
- Accuracy is crucial here. Even on the 'open holes', there's a steep penalty if you don't throw straight. #1 -trees lining the water's edge, so avoid those. Also, throw far enough to clear the water. That's kind of crucial too. #2 - don't go too far right or too long, or you'll end up in the lake as well. #3 & 4 are doglegs right, so if you miss your line, or hit one of the random trees, you're going to be left scrambling for par.
- Great, descriptive tee signs. Look at the pictures on here, and you'll see how good they are. Tee pads are solid as well.
- Large park with a little bit of everything. I saw people fishing, using the playground, playing on different sports court, having get together at large pavilions & picnic shelters. Good facilities as well - bathrooms, water fountains and drink machines. There are some nice, scenic views of the lake on some parts of the course.
- I always give credit to course that loop back to the parking lot after nine holes, so props to Roane Co. This gives you a chance to play only nine holes, or tee off on #10, if desired.
- Course should offer a good challenge for even the best of players. This is not a beginner-friendly course. It's clearly aimed for experienced players.

Cons:

My biggest con with the course is the tee shot for #1. I'm usually a fan of tee shots over water, but this one is a problem with me. For starters, it's your first shot of the round, so you're arm probably isn't warmed up. It's about 275 - 300 feet to clear the water, so you better come out firing on your first shot of the day. I noticed my arm was only at 90% when I saw my disc find its water grave. The other problem is that there isn't a bail out shot around the water. The trees/shrubs are too thick to the left of the tee, to the point that you can't even play a safe route around the water, if you choose to do so. Two simple solutions for this would be: A. clear out the shrubs to the left, or B. move the tee further left. This would knock off some of the distance over water, but still give you the same challenge.
- The other water issue was #13. I feel the basket is too close to the water for the distance & speed your disc should be carrying to the hole. If you threw a good tee shot, you're probably throwing a downhill second shot from 75 - 150 feet out. The basket is about 10 - 15 feet from the water, so you're being asked to stop your disc, without a skip, to get it close. Moving the basket another 20 feet inland would reward great shots and still penalize bad ones. This is such a great hole (one of my favorite in all of the Knoxville-area courses) that I hate being limited in your shot aggressiveness.
- Signage between holes could be better. The course map only lists the front nine, so that should be updated. There are faded-off arrows drawn on some baskets, but having clearer signs (wooded markers, perhaps) would be huge.
- Gray baskets are hard to spots in the shadows of the wooded holes.

Other Thoughts:

Roane County is a top-course. Based on the numbers on this site (the number of people who have played and reviewed it), compared to other Knoxville-area courses, this course is extremely underrated. Maybe because it is out of the way (it's about 40 minutes west of Knoxville), but the course doesn't get the love or attention that it deserves.
- One of things I look at when playing a new course, in addition to the number of solid/great holes, is the number of average to below-average holes. It's the old sports analogy of a team only being as strong as its weakest player. Anyways, I was extremely impressed that there were no bad/throwaway holes. That shows you the course designer put in a lot of time and effort to make this course great.
- If I lived in Knoxville, I'd be here every chance I get. The tight, wooded layout (for a big part of the course) is a change of pace to the three 18-holers in Knoxville.
- #13 was my favorite hole on this course. Move the basket further from the water, to allow more aggressiveness and more risk/reward, and this would make this great hole even better. #5 & 6 are also a great back-to-back stretch that also deserve special attention.
- Anyone in the Knoxville area, or driving along I-40 definitely should check out this course. It's worth the time to play this challenge 18-hole layout.

Well designed course in a beautiful park setting 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course makes use of some beautiful park land to make a fun and challenging round of golf. The course designer did a great job of maximizing the available land. There's plenty of options out there for multiple pin placements in the future. There's a great variety of shots on the front 9, backhands, forehands, and even a tomahawk route or two! Clean bathrooms, vending machines, and picnic shelters add value to the course. This is well worth a stop to play if your passing through, or even a detour up I-40 if your passing through Knoxville.

Cons:

There are a few small things that add up to reduce this courses rating from an easy 4 to a 3.5. First and foremost, the back 9 is repetitive, after the front 9 I was ready to declare this one of the best courses in Tennessee, but the back 9 just fizzles out. Secondary are a few smaller issues. Some tee-pads are unlevel, some tee-signs are misleading. Holes appear to be straight when they're actually abrupt RHBH anhyzers.

Other Thoughts:

I did not factor it into this rating because it's a seasonal problem, but currently there serveral holes (#13 for example) that are nearly unplayable because of spring growth that needs to be "limbed up". A few hours with a pole-saw and the problem is resolved, but for now the course is playing 2 or 3 strokes harder because several holes are missing fairways.

This course has the potential to be great, I hope the local disc golf community continues to improve the course. It could easily become a destination course for tournament players from Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, & beyond!

Harder than it looks! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Roane Co. Park DGC is now a full 18-hole course set in a beautiful city park almost completely surrounded by the lake. There is ample parking with restrooms and a picnic pavilion near the parking area. The kiosk at the parking lot has a large color course map.

The course itself is very well-designed, utilizing all of the available land. Most of the holes are moderately wooded. Holes 1 and 2 are more open, but play over and along the lake. Elevation varies from flat, to gentle, to hilly. #13 is a memorable adventure with the most hills and the lake in play on your right off the tee and behind the basket on your approach. There is an excellent mix of straight, left, and right bending holes, as well as several holes that provide options. Hole length is a nice variety, as well, covering all distances from a range of 225' - 420'.

This course will challenge any player to hit their lines off the tee. Many of the holes are at a length where most people will have to execute a longer approach in order to get a 3, and any deuces here will definitely be earned. The holes are not too long and there is not undergrowth or rough to frustrate newer players, but there are enough trees to make even advance players think about how to play the hole.

Cons:

The tee signs, though nice and colorful, depict a generic hole map that do not give much help in understanding what the hole entails, especially since there are a lot of trees and hills making many baskets blind from the tee. In fact, some of the hole maps were deceptive (map shows basket slightly right, when in reality it was a dog left.)

Hole #1 is a great hole across the lake, but I would have preferred not to have it as the first hole. That is an intimidating tee shot, ~300' just to clear the water with a good chance of some wind coming off the lake, and I would rather have had this signature hole in the middle of the round. I also felt like this hole really needs an alternate tee- there were two great spots to put one in- either to make the water shot much shorter, or on the other side to avoid playing over the water altogether. This hole could be really discouraging for players to lose a disc on your first shot, especially if you are a newer player with only a couple of discs.

The walk to #4 was longer than normal around the tennis courts, and the tee is kind of hidden so it is hard to find the first time you play. It was only until about hole 5 that I noticed someone had drawn in an arrow on the yellow rim of the Discatcher pointing to the next tee.

The holes started to become a little repetitive in style on the back. Holes 15-18 are not nearly as interesting as the rest of the course, and there were not the clearly defined fairways like on the rest of the course. (The back is newer so maybe this will improve as the course matures.)

Other Thoughts:

This is a very good course with a solid design and layout that will appeal to players of all skill levels. I was pleasantly surprised as the course was much better than I had anticipated. I would like to come back and play it again to try to shoot a lower score! This is easily my favorite course in a 100 mile radius between Nashville and Kingsport, including the Knoxville and Chattanooga courses. If you are driving by on I-40 it is definitely worth a stop, and the course is not far off the Interstate.

The location is listed as Harriman on this site, but it is way out of town on the other side of I-40 on the lake between the small towns of Harriman, Rockwood, and Kingston. (The map feature accurately shows the location.)

Also, another reviewer mentioned you could swim on hole #1, either to get your disc or to cool off, but there were No Swimming signs posted.

Pros:

This course has a lot of wooded areas. Very easy to under estimate this course and its difficulty. Hole 1 is a very beautiful shot over the lake, 300 ft. to clear, and the basket is up the bank 35 ft. Saw a lot of swimming discs and golfers that day. 2 nice slight dog leg to right. 3, 45 degrees dog leg to right. 4 breaks hard to right and down hill to basket. Left handers will kill these holes if accurate. 5 is across the street and down the hill. Plays through trees to a little pocket of grass. Low and accurate is a must. 6 plays back towards the road and there is a serious bunker right before the basket. Basket on a elevated hill. 7 is played to the left of 6 and back across street. Plays through a tight thread of trees. 8 again through trees and up hill. 9 is back down hill through trees again. I found a anhyzer flick shot does well. 10 through 18 do not have markers or signs, so pay attention. 10 starts across road and to the right side of restrooms. Throws straight and then dog legs to left and up small hill. 11 starts to the right and up near the street. Has a small thread and slightly to left. There will be a small path to follow. 12 is across the street and to the left of 11's basket. Play it parallel to street and then downhill to basket. 13 is back and to the right of 12. It has a nice bench right near pad. Plays across valley and on the other side, the tee is near water. Water is in play here if disc drifts right to far. 14 plays back the other way from 13 and is a short par 3. You will see the basket as your playing 13 and dont get confused when your throwing off the tee at 13. 14's basket is left of tee box 13 is down the hill to the right. 15 is back across street from 14 and plays a slight dog leg right. basket is right near road. 16 plays back the other way and is right near the road. Shot through trees with flick to turn right. 17 is near basket for 16 and plays a dog leg left towards 15's tee pad. 18th's tee pad is very close to 11's tee pad. You will be throwing back towards the restrooms and will turn right at the end and will be on the other side of restroom from 10's tee. Very nice course with lots of wooded shots. Will be better once signs are up for 10 through 18. Will be coming back to play this one again.

Cons:

Needs arrows to point you in the right direction. of course signs on back 9.

Other Thoughts:

On hole 1. If in summer the water is very nice and after a run of 18 on this course and you will want to take a dip in the water.

Suprisingly challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

All the quintessential elements come together on this course: trees, wind, elevation, and water. And that's only 9 holes.

Cons:

I regret there is no safe place to lay up on 1-- either make it across or throw a disc that floats

Other Thoughts:

For me, courses are either beginner friendly or not. For a course laid out in a multi-use park I had an expectation of this course leaning towards "beginner friendly". Stepping onto the tee for one erases any notion of that.

I believe the designer(s) of this course well understand what makes disc golf challenging and intimidating (wind, water, elevation, trees). All are in effect on this course. I only played 9, but I felt like I played 18.

The cumulative result is not that the course is overly long (it is not) or that the approaches are overly technical (4 was definitely tricky), but this reviewer was impressed by the number of different types of shots required to approach the area of a good score.

Or to put it another way: Instead of trying to maximize the chance of a good lie, one plays to minimize the chance of a bad one. Your mistakes can and will be punished.

If the back 9 end up anything like the front 9 (the layout for 13 looks very promising) this has a very good chance of being one of the best, if not the best, courses in East Tennessee (yes, even better than that one you're thinking of).

Pros:

Location, location, location! This course is in a gorgeous location right on the lake. The layout of the course is challenging yet enjoyable. The view off of the first tee is both beautiful and intimidating. The elevation change is very well done with a few good up and down shots. Some of the fairways play extremely narrow with great right to left or left to right paths.

Cons:

Hole #1 in a cross wind can deceive you. I tried a little turn over flick with a dragon and it ended up in the middle of the lake. Also some of the pin placements were near some drainage areas and the ground under them was a little spongy.

Other Thoughts:

All in all a great little 9 hole gem. The park staff are also awesome. My first shot off of the first tee went wide right into the lake and a park employee actually emptied his pocket and swam out and retrieved my disc.

Pros:

Brand new high quality baskets, concrete tees, and tee signs. Bathroom and vending machine near parking lot.

Cons:

Frequently used walking paths may come into play on some holes. Some baskets located near water run-off culverts, so dampness could be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays on the gently rolling, sometimes open, sometimes wooded land at the entrance of a large multi-purpose park. Tee #1 is located next to the water, behind shelter #1. Map is sufficient for navigation, but next tee signs would be nice. Suggest some additional trimming to the rightside of #4 to create a fairer throwing path (and lessen the chance of a disc heading for the walking path, which can't be seen from the tee). Nice variety - length ranging from low 200s to low 400s, blend of right/left/straight, and some elevation changes.

A brief hole-by-hole description:

#1 Can you confidently throw straight ~250'? You'll need to do so to clear the water on this scenic first hole!

#2 Long, flat, and straight, tree halfway on left, water to the far right, closer as approaching basket.

#3 Only ~250', but need to turn right almost immediately, with trees to avoid at midpoint.

#4 A longer and sharper version of #3.

#5 Longest hole at over 400', straight for first 300' then slight left, avoiding trees at various points.

#6 Cross-slope through-trees gentle right-turner, with a small "moat" in front of elevated basket.

#7 Classic, short, sweeping left-turner, throwing path defined by scattered trees.

#8 Slightly uphill, straight, tree-defined fairway, needing slight right at end.

#9 Moderately downhill, straight-but-narrow, or wider right-to-left path available.

Looking forward to nine additional holes of equal quality!

Update 4/20/11:

Many holes give you choice of a closer/straighter/tighter lane, or longer-but-more-open turning lane. Same top quality signage and teepads as the front nine - many of the same dampness problems, as well.

#10 Across mini-valley, minor left turn needed at midpoint near cluster of trees

#11 Long, gradual left-turner, fair throwing lane defined by trees, fairly flat.

#12 Straight and flat first 3/4ths, narrowing as it goes, then needing to drop to the left as it crests the slope

#13 DISC EATER! Left-to-right steeply-sloping land filled with hardwoods, water along right side. Must throw across a couple hundred feet dip, basket on the far side of the next hillock. Turn the disc over, or catch a tree just wrong, or roll down the slope, or overthrow the basket on the approach, and find water - deep, brown water.

#14 Straight but tight, or more open right-to-left turner, flat.

#15 Straight across a gentler slope, tight early, or a more open left-to-right turner.

#16 Straight and quite tight late, or longer but more open right-turner, slightly downhill.

#17 Up-slope left-turner, teepad not quite properly aligned, basket farther left than pad/sign indicates

#18 Up-n-over a small rise, fairway-10 to the left, pavilion/bball court to right of basket

A solid course that became even better by doubling the number of holes.
