Great course with an excellent layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Well groomed for the terrain. Expected a ton of leaves, but foot traffic has kept the fairways pretty clean.
- Great use of the terrain. Lot of thought must have gone into the layout of this course and offers a lot of variety of shots throughout.
- Excellent signage per hole
- Very nice tee boxes. Almost all are brick and one is a rubber pad, but I am sure it will be brick soon.

Cons:

- Not really a con, but for a RHBH, there are a lot of LHBH friendly holes.
- Some guidance from basket to next hole could have been better
- Bring your hiking boots. This is a very hilly course!!
- Lot of disc golfers leaving trash on the course. C'mon people. Big sign says, "Carry out what you carry in" on the 1st tee. No excuse for that. Maybe Fitchburg or the park staff can put out some trash barrels on some holes?

Other Thoughts:

For my first time at this course, I was absolutely thrilled with the layout and the mix of shots to be used per hole. Anywhere from an ace run to a multi-shot for position. I am guessing the 3.0 rating is based on when the course did not have signs for each hole and proper tee boxes, but this course is ranked very high on my list and will be played more and more.

Good, intermediate difficulty course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Intermediate course that makes you throw a lot of different shots.
- Course is well taken care of. Fairways and paths between basket and tees are worn in and easy to follow.

Cons:

- Some of the undergrowth in the rough is getting a bit out of control. Can take some time finding discs while scratching up your legs if you are wearing shorts.
- There are a couple holes that could have better signs pointing to the next tee.

Other Thoughts:

As someone with less than 100 rounds experience, Coggs offers a good challenge for me to work on many parts of my game. Good mix of left-to-right, straight, and right-to-left shots. Throwing into the rough forces you to get creative to get out of trouble. A couple holes also make you think twice about running long putts.

Spotter please 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Secluded public park... no one will bother you during round
- rarely crowded, and even if crowded there is enough space between holes to prevent clogging
- Nice when leaves fall as it makes some baskets easier to see
- Good mix of holes going up hill and flat...
- Open and tight, makes for good diversity

Cons:

- If you love your disc, have a spotter for holes 7 / 9... ANY shot that isn't straight will go into the very thick underbrush and will be gone forever (RIP Star Katana lost today)... Having someone about 150 feet down will prevent this and the inevitable headache with searching forever.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad course.. it is 1/2 mile off of rte 2 which makes it very accessible for someone coming from Western MA or Boston...

Many Improvements 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course is playing better than it ever has. Most holes now have brick tee pads and the brush is much thinner thanks to recent work days. Many unique holes with a very good use of the elevation changes, great greens, challenging but fair.

My favorites would be:
3 - A rolling fairway with OB road running along the entire right side and a guarded basket

6 - Tee shot plays over a 250ft gully, if you do make the opposite hill there are small patches of laurel and pine protecting the green if you don't stay in the fairway.

13 - A short, easy hole but a great example of the landscape. Plays over a large boulder onto a green with multiple levels, miss right and you're putting from 5 feet above the basket, miss left and you may be rolling away but the basket sits on a nice level spot.

Cons:

There are some areas where casual water will always be an issue, so proper footwear during wet seasons is a good idea.

It is tight and technical so it may be tough on beginners.

Other Thoughts:

League on Monday nights with pools for all skill levels.

Currently tees off at 5PM.

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

As you move farther west from Boston, the hills get bigger and bigger. I was surprised at how much elevation the course presented. The middle of the course zigs and zags up and down a steep portion of the hill.

Holes 4-12 hold some fun holes as you go up and down. Hole 8 is a 193-foot tunnel shot with ace potential (I clanged the front of the basket). Hole 9 is a downhill shot with multiple ways to get to the basket. Hole 11 is a big RHBH anhyzer, one of the few holes that finishes in the open.

There are multi-shot holes here. They don't all work (see below), but hole 17 is a good one. There is a landing zone for your slightly downhill drive before the fairway declines steeply off to the right, requiring a well-placed forehand to get a 3.
Navigation was pretty easy.

On a nice Sunday afternoon in November, I was one of maybe 6 people on the course.

Cons:

There is too much emphasis of length on a lot of holes. You already have elevation and woods, so adding length requires some careful design, and I don't think it succeeded here. Too many of the longer holes did not have realistic landing zones, so the multi-shot strategy wasn't really there; you were just driving and hoping you didn't end up in some brush. Holes 6 (a great cross-valley drive that didn't need distance tacked on) and 14 are prime examples.

Lots of blind shots. This made playing here for the first time pretty annoying. Hole 15 is a great steep uphill drive, but the hole is out of sight on a plane up top. Why? If you have the basket at the top of the hill, it is not only visible, it adds challenge, punishing long drives with a tough comeback and short drives with a possible rollaway.

Some tee signs would help. Distance and fairway direction were a bit of a guessing game (only par is shown).

The brush wasn't bad on this Sunday in November, but I could see it being really bad in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

As of this writing, the course is rated 2.81. To be clear, Coggshall is better than that. It was built not long after this site came online, so the older reviews reflect a 9-hole course or one that wasn't very polished.

I am updating my rating and review a few years later. After playing ~10 rounds here, I really like this course. There are a lot of memorable holes, and the mix of challenging and fun holes is really great. It's a fun tournament course and an uncrowded, enjoyable casual course.

Lots of changes since earlier posts 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Based on reading previous posts, it sounds like this course has changed a lot since 2012. Here's my description of the course as of October 2014. I've tried to highlight how the course differs from earlier reviews.

-18 holes
-Abundant parking off of South St. with a prominent sign that says "Disc Golf Parking Only"
-Free
-Some tee pads are good. Every hole has a well-defined tee pad. Some are brick, some are rubber, some are natural.
-Baskets are in fine shape.
-The golf is challenging with all the trees and most holes are fair.
-Nice use of elevation, especially on 6 and 16.
-Hole 6 is clearly the best hole. Great aesthetics and a great tee shot.
-Underbrush was not a problem, except for a couple holes, but maybe this would be worse in the summer.

Cons:

-It took my 5 minutes of wandering to find the first tee.
-There's a bulletin board, but it has no course map. A course map would have been very helpful.
-The holes have signs, but no indication of the layout of the hole. Most tee shots are blind, so this is frustrating. The hole signs also don't tell you how long the holes are. This was frustrating.
-There are lots of homemade signs around to help you get from one hole to the next. That said, navigation was hard for a first-timer. I'm not sure I would have found hole 6 without running into some folk. And getting from hole 12 to 13 was hard too. Navigation was frustrating, although I made it through without a map or smart phone.
-I saw one pile of poop and stepped in another. Otherwise the course was clean.
-Some tee pads are bumpy and some are too short.
-Two long walks from 3 to 4 and 12 to 13.
-Some fairways are too tight and long for my taste. I think it was 9 and 14 and 17 and 18 where the fairway is narrow and windy and long. I bet this could be great for a local who knows the course really well, but I was frustrated on these holes.
-Some holes are pretty boring. Like 1.
-The course is described as moderately wooded. I would say it is heavily wooded!

Other Thoughts:

If this course had better signage from hole to hole, signage for the layout of holes, hole distances listed, a sign to find the first tee, and a course map, it would be much better. I recognize that returners won't be bothered by the lack of navigational help, but as a first-timer, this put a damper on my experience. Otherwise, this was solid disc golf. I am pretty close to giving the course a 2.5, but I love the Disc Golf Parking Only sign in front that let me know I was in the right place. If I were a local, I'd be happy to play here on a regular basis.

Decent Course with A Lot of Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Pretty challenging set of wooded holes that allow you to really practice your woods game.
* You definitely get some good exercise hiking up and down some of the hills.
* For the most part the course is pretty clean. I found very little trash there.
* A few holes were ones that you shot across valleys. Those were a lot of fun.
* It's in a very quiet park that didn't seem very crowded when we played.
* There are a couple of holes that even a beginner may have a chance to ace.
* The baskets were very new and in excellent shape.

Cons:

* My biggest peeve is the lack of signage. This was my first time playing this course. There were no signs stating how long the holes were and only a few showing you where the next tee was.
* Tee boxes could use a little leveling and gravel if they are not going with wooden or concrete tee pads.
* Needs a lot of maintenance. There are a lot of wood piles and trees down off the main fairway. Likely due to the ice storm a few years back. Could use a little care.
* Not a friendly course for beginners.
* Oddly enough we found about 10 bras hanging from various tree branches and signs. I'm not sure if this is a joke or perverts run free in the woods after dark.

Other Thoughts:

This was a pretty hilly, wooded course. I was really frustrated on the front 9, but the back 9 was much more enjoyable. I think it just took some getting used to on my part. I really wish they cleaned up the downed branches and brush as this could be a very nice course. I look forward to seeing if local clubs/players organize something to help clean this course up.

New England Woodsy Discin' 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Coggshall Park is a relatively new course that appears to be on it's way to becoming a real gem considering it is free to play. It is very easy to locate and parking is right by hole 1. There's only room for about 10 cars but we had the course to ourselves on July 4th. The setting is quite beautiful with massive boulders, tall pines, and rolling hills of Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron.

Design incorporates elevation to create a nice variety of holes. There are steep uphills, long gradual downhills, and a couple ridge to ridge shots with valleys in between. I found myself using a multitude of drivers, mids, and even putters off the tee, so bring your whole bag. Proficiency in throwing a Roc/Buzz/etc. nice and straight is rewarded. There are lanes to pump drivers out to the right or left, but the brush in the rough makes for a dangerous risk/reward ratio. Although the brush made finding discs difficult at times, it isn't very tall so you can usually get back on track with a nicely placed tommy/thumber. Baskets are brand new DISCatchers which grab discs well and are bright yellow which makes spotting them (a little) easier. The greens were all very nice once you found them and then got your disc to them.

Cons:

The entrance to the park appears shady at best. The information "kiosk" is a joke. The natural tee pads are vaguely defined at their best and flat out dangerous at their worst. Signage only gives hole number and par (all 3's except for 1 hole). I don't care what the par is. I can't see the basket on more than half the holes, so how about a distance or a little sharpie drawing of which direction the hole turns. We ended up walking a bunch of holes before throwing because they literally could have been 290 dogleg right or 400 straight ahead. This gets tiring with the (awesome) steep rocky terrain. There were a couple spray and pray holes but most had an intended fairway. Took us 10 mins to find hole 4: After 3, take a left and follow the road up the hill past the 13 tee (ya...13). After hole 12, walk back down the road to 13. More thorough 'next tee' signage is needed. The few trash cans we saw were literally overflowing with garbage (It's full! Take your crap with you and throw it out in a container that doesn't have a Jenga pyramid of refuse reaching a foot above the can.)

Other Thoughts:

Obviously after playing once or twice the layout/signage 'cons' diminish, but for a first timer it was a little tough. This is not a super difficult course (shot a 56 first time out), however it is not beginner friendly. Hardcore New England discers/hikers will feel at home. With those beautiful baskets and great environment, proper tee boxes should be a priority. Some of them will need to be moved entirely. We really enjoyed playing here despite the cons. As this course improves I think it will become very popular. Those who enjoy Devens will certainly like this course (once Devens-esque signage is installed). Now that I know the layout I can't wait to play it again!

Check It Out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good hole design and variety overall with uphill, downhill, flat, and rolling hills all in the mix.
- Mix of holes favoring RHBH/LHBH.
- Very few short holes. Consistently challenging.
- Baskets in great shape.
- Great setup to play quick 9 holes.
- Quiet, secluded and serene, but still conveniently located.
- New parking area has opened making parking a breeze.
- Actively being improved.

Cons:

- Teeboxes are terrible right now to be honest (but are frequently being worked on).
- The rough is thick out there. It can be difficult to find discs thrown off the narrow fairways.
- Some holes have low lying muddy areas.
- Gets buggy in summer.
- Course layout is not ideal (due to being split into lower 9 and upper 9). There are lengthy walks between some holes, notably 2-3 and 12-13.
- No signage for holes other than par and distance.
- Some permanent signage still needed for direction to next hole, though this is not a problem after a playing once.

Other Thoughts:

This is my hometown course and it's getting better, but still has room to improve.

I really enjoy the play here. The holes are narrow and challenging. The rough is so thick (and thorny!) in spots that the safe play is often rewarded, making for many interesting risk/reward shots. There is a lot of elevation to work with here but there are only a few downhill holes, while there are several steep uphill holes. Most holes are overall flat with rolling hills.

There is definitely work to be done though, but that is one of the great things about this course -- it will only get better. Every time I'm out playing I run into someone working on the course. Recently a few baskets have been reset (for height) or moved slightly. Some teeboxes have also been moved (closer to the basket) or are being improved. This is good because the teeboxes are awful for most holes, and that is my major gripe with this course. Since I'm local I may work on raising some money for rubber pads for the teeboxes.

There are 19 holes here, but not really. I'm still confused by it actually. There are 18 holes with permanent sings for 1-18. But in front of 1 is a short 193ft hole that has a temporary 1 sign.

The way my friends and I play it:
18 holes - Play temp 1 as a warmup and then play the signed 1-18.
9 holes - Play temp 1 as 1, then signed 1 as 2, 2 as 3. Cross the street and play 13-18 to finish quick 9.

I'll post a course map soon and will be working on hole description signage for the course (as soon as they stop moving baskets).

If you live nearby you should absolutely give Coggshall a play, just don't forget the bug spray!

Great course taking form 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very cool course with lots of interesting holes
- Quiet
- Some opportunities for bigger (but precise) arms
- Only 12 min. from Devens, making for a pleasant 36 holes in the woods
- Now has 18 holes, with some great additions in the "top" nine
- Quality baskets
- It's clear that a lot of work has been done on this course and it's a reasonable expectation that a lot of work will continue to be done, turning this into the gem it deserves to be

Cons:

- Lack of signage hurts both in navigating between holes and at the teebox on blind shots
- Some rough teeboxes
- I imagine this will be a *very* buggy course come summertime, bring bugspray
- A lot of underbrush off of the fairways can make it a little tricky to navigate to errant discs.

Other Thoughts:

Despite its open lines of sight, this is a narrow course. That said, there are very few trees in the middle of the narrow fairways, meaning that if you don't stray you won't need to worry about unlucky bounces.

I think there's no doubt that this course is going to blow up in popularity as it nears a more completed state. It's a challenging, but exceptionally fair, course.

Coggshall's location can't be beat. Right off of rt 2, it is a 12 minute drive to Devens DGC, and there's a Play it Again Sports about 1 mile down the road in Leominster to buy some new plastic while you're in the area.

Cons:

- parking is terrible, there is only room for a few cars in a small horseshoe driveway.
- finding the next basket can be difficult, as signage is poor on the first few holes, now that i've played it once it won't be a problem though.
- tee pads are mostly natural, a few horse pads in the beginning

Coggshall 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Coggshall Disc Golf is located in a large park right off the main road. It has 18 holes all with brand new Discatchers that catch amazingly well.

Elevation is nice here as several holes have good up or down hill shots. One has you go over a valley to get to a basket. A few of the fairways have dropoffs on the sides so if you go off the fairway you gotta go back up and through the trees to get back on track. Almost half of the course has some use of elevation on the hole.

There is a variety of holes here that cater to rhbh and lhbh as well as a couple of ways to attack the basket. It isnt always just one way to get to a basket but a couple of ways.

The road on the lower holes is OB which adds to the challenge. I know some people hate OB but in my opinion if used correctly can add to a course. In the case of Coggshall I defently think it adds to the course.

If you are pressed for time(lunch round) you can easily play the bottom 9 in about 45 minutes as they loop around the lower section and finish right next to the parking lot where you come in at.

The wildlife here is great there are deer, different birds, and the mountain laurel is nice to look at during summer

There are brick tee boxes on holes 10,11, and 12. Several tee boxes have been flattened out and improved. More brick teeboxes are in the works.

Cons:

Parking at Coggshall has greatly improved. There is now parking for at least 20 cars with more parking planned for the future.

Coggshall is still a new course that is getting better everyday but the undergrowth is defently tough. The mountain laurel here is brutal. It looks nice but they very large and overgrown and you can spend a lot of time looking for your disc and not playing.

The teepads are rough. Most are natural while some have rubber horse stall mats. The natural tees need work and the rubber on the others is a little to short. They are getting better though, see the pros above

Other Thoughts:

For a quick round you can use the bottom 9 holes. Use holes 1-3 and 13-18. Its a quick loop that starts and finishes at the parking lot.

Hole 4 is up the road from hole 3. Its about 100 yards up the road and you tee off from the road.

There is a league on Thursday nights starting at 5:15 $5/play $10/tags.

Come fall we are hopeing to have more brick teepads in place. The goal is to have all 18 done by year end.

Pros:

Very challenging and beautiful location. This course is in a beautiful pine and oak forest.

You can pick wild blueberries and raspberries in late summer.

Great array of wildlife to be seen from red tail hawks, to smoking mushrooms.

Cons:

This course can be frustrating due to all of the undergrowth. Even if you have a good drive, you may be looking for your disc for a long time.

The course is still just 9 holes, so there is room for growth and if it is cut and cleaned more it can easily move to a 3+ rating.

This course needs a donation box so that we can move along the unfinished work and get it cleared out properly.

A work in progress 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wooded course with some use of elevation

Cons:

No signage, course still in development.

Other Thoughts:

For rating a course I base my ratings on 50% design, 20% course upkeep, 10% basket, tee, tee sign, and signage, 10% amenities, and 10% that special something that defines a course.

Intro:
Coggshall Park is a new course being developed in an unused section of Coggshall Park. Entrance is through a long unused gate to a long ignored area of the park. The work was started in the Summer of 2009 and so far there are nine holes in playable condition. Over the next year the course is planned to expand to 18 holes with full baskets. I understand that the City of Fitchburg may also consider a second course in another area of town depending on the results of this course. This review will change based on the work being done and the current condition of the course as of my "last played" date.

Design:
The course is a wooded course. There is a mix of both right and left hand doglegs. Some holes feature minor elevation drops and one involves a steep elevation change. Target areas are mostly clear and level with no chance of a missed put rolling away down a hill. Fairways are loosely defined with multiple routes available. There are no water shots and the only water on the course are run off areas that may be dry, wet, or damp depending on the day and recent weather. The course has more of a feeling of buckets simply placed in the woods than well designed and executed holes.

Course Upkeep:
Being a new course there has been very little upkeep since the holes were originally created. Fairways are not as defined as they should be with saplings dotting the course. Brush from the previous clearing of the fairway still remain. Trash was observed already such as an empty alcohol container and an empty chewing tobacco container sitting in the middle of the course.

Basket, tee, tee sign, and signage:
Baskets (or in this case targets) are made out of 5 gallon buckets sitting on top of large stakes. Most of the buckets are orange making them easy to see but some of them are white which blends in with the current snow condition. The buckets also have a tendency to sit crooked on the stake unless you right it before your putt. Tees are natural tees with nailed 2x4's simply laying on the ground (not buried or staked). Tees were covered with snow and ice at time of playing so underlying condition was undetermined. There are no tee signs. There is no signage on the course whatsoever such as hole number or direction to next tee.

Amenities:
The parking lot at the gate to the park is small and can accommodate about 4 cars. In fact, it's not a parking lot at all but the area off the road to a barricaded unused entrance to this area of the park. If this course grows to more golfer traffic, the City of Fitchburg will need to either enlarge the parking area or open the gate to allow vehicle traffic to enter the course lest people be forced to park on a busy street. There are no picnic tables. There are no grills. There is no practice target. There is no billboard. There are no bathrooms. There are no trash receptacles. There is no source of water.

That "special something":
Right now there is no defining factor of the course. There is plenty of elevation to work with but most of the holes are relatively flat. This may be changed as the area where the next 9 holes are planned to be installed are on a large hill. No one hole stands out as a "signature" hole.

Conclusion:
This review is based on current condition of the course. I fully understand that this course in in it's infancy and look forward to seeing it grow. It is a nice start but more work needs to be done to make it worth coming back to again and again.

Pros:

There is a decent mix of shots needed throughout the bottom eight holes. While there isn't a lot of elevation change there is enough to keep you honest, but not limit your shots too much. The upper ten holes change elevation much more but are still in the "clean-up" phase and are very hard to find. The tee boxes are lined with 2x4's or felled trees which makes them pretty easy to find. The hole variety is pretty decent mix of left, right, tunnels, uphill and downhill. There is also pretty decent parking by the entrance(it says don't use the entrance, but its ok). The Home Depot five gallon bucket targets are pretty easy to see, if the hole has them. The lower holes 1-2 and 13-18 all have brand new Discatchers. Holes sixteen and seventeen are by far the most exciting holes on the course. Sixteen is a short shot straight up the hill with the basket perched on a rock landing. Seventeen is a long dogleg left with many obstacles and a high shot will get lost in the foliage. These two holes have probably the best risk/reward shots on the course. The upper holes have lots of potential and with some more clean-up will be a great asset to the course and park in general.

Cons:

Probably the most glaring con is the lack of signage. There are no tee signs or next tee signs on the upper holes. Next tee signs and hole numbers are available on the lower holes. The course currently has eight permanent and one temporary hole on the bottom and ten holes up top(these holes have no signage). Navigation is incredibly difficult on holes 3-11. I spent more time looking for next tee boxes and targets than actually throwing. There are no major design flaws but the hard navigation really drags this course down. There is still a considerable amount of brush and cut down trees littering the fairways of some of the holes which makes for some tricky footing[there has been leaps and bounds made on this on the lower holes but the uppers are still miserable]. Some of the tee boxes are very unlevel and downright dangerous (hole seventeen). No map is currently available and the baskets aren't numbered (not really a problem but would be nice to have).

Other Thoughts:

Bring boots as there is a small creek that runs through the park and drains into the lower parts of the park, which just so happens to be where the course is. You might want to wear long pants as well because there is still a bunch of brush that needs clearing and tons of thorny vines all over the course. There is a group that is working on it, and has all of the brush out of the fairway but an errant throw and you could be in trouble. New baskets have helped and sohave some workdays but the underbrush keeps coming back with a vengence.
Here's my breakdown of navigation between the lower holes. Note: actual hole number in parenthesis.
1 to 2 - about 50` down the path after basket 1
2 to 3 - go up the hill turn left and go 70`. The tee box is near where the road starts to bend on the right
3(13) to 4(14) - about 30' up the hill
4(14) to 5(15) - turn to your left and walk 50`
5(15) to 6(16) - go up the trail on the right 100`
6(16) to 7(17) - down the hill to the right 50`
7(17) to 8(18) - 20` down the path
(Note that all distances are approximated)
