Excellent use of a City Park

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Time for a fresh review - lots of the older "cons" weren't evident during my August 2022 visit.

+ Built in 2010, showing its age in the best ways: well beat-in woods holes with clear lines, two sets of tees that really alter the play of most holes, sturdy pavers, good DisCatchers, excellent signage, bulletin board with large course map

+ A park-style course with a layout that takes advantage of every natural feature available: a stream creating great risk/reward decisions on holes 5, 10 and 18; basket 6 up on a mound, significant elevation changes in various hilly sections, and deep woods on 13 and 14. It requires a lot of walking, but the variety of holes is worth it

+ Good mix of left-to-right and right-to-left lines, and hole #15 features a top of the world par 4 with a right turn down into a valley. If you can get the right glide, you'll remember your teeshot for years

Cons:

- Hole #12 has a crazy steep uphill face that starts right in front of the tee, with a hard right turn at the top to a blind basket. I'm sure regular players learn the hole over time, but it's a bit janky for the first timer

- The course finishes with a couple of short par 3's that aren't bad holes, but they're a little weak as finishers. #17 is very short (though an ace run risks a sidehill rollaway), and #18 is split by a stream with foliage that has grown up considerably more than pictured, making for a very narrow slot over the water. So you might find yourself playing the par 3 closing hole with a fairway layup

Other Thoughts:

~ Condition is immaculate. Between the park staff and several local clubs, the course gets a lot of care

~ Schenectady's Central Park is an urban gem designed by Frederick Law Olmstead (see also: NYC's Central Park) and modernized with tennis, swimming and other activities. The recent removal of the old tennis stadium may cause some changes to the disc golf layout. I understand a new swimming pool is going in, and it will probably require more space. This may require changes to holes 6 - 8. But in the meantime, play and enjoy this course, It appears to be in really good hands for any future changes.

Well kept, fun to play course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well kept fairways, no long grass. A nice mix of shots are required. More LHBH shots than your average course. Well marked tee signs. A nicely technical course that never feels unfair.

Cons:

Some of the teepads need work. Seveal holes play close to recreational areas, which can lead to dangerous situations. Locals leave garbage on the course. Safety can be an issue when playing near twilight.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a really fun, fair course. Adding some garbage cans might reduce some of the refuse on the course.

Surprisingly Good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Growing up in the area I had no idea there was anything worth doing or visiting in Schnectady, but this course is surprisingly good! Central park is very nice and the course is legit for sure. The park is shared with a lot of different activities but it never seemed to be a problem. There is a good mix of short and long and nice use of elevation. There are two sets of tee pads which my wife and I enjoy. There is also a nice mix of wooded technical play and more open shots where you can let it fly. Overall I found the course well planned out and fair to play with no tricked out or gimmick holes. There is a mix of tee pads but none of it caused any undue challenges.

Cons:

There were no maps (and the score card had no map) and it was a bit hard to navigate the first time around. There were a few we just couldn't find and had to wait for locals to show up and help.

The course is a bit RHBH oriented

Very little water or OB

Lack of garbage cans

Thin Fairways, Focus Required 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Clear an definite fairways vs rough
-Forces you to throw certain shots/lines
-Awesome tee signs with distance and hole layout
-Great signage between holes (some are quite a walk)
-Good variety of left/right finishing holes
-Nice elevation changes for a city park
-Huge anny on 15 is unique
-Nice woodsy feel for a city park course

Cons:

-Tee pads are some sort of fabric (not a problem but some might not like this)
-I could envision it being busy with pedestrians on some holes
-Not Necessarly a good course for beginners but the design is wonderful.

Not much bad to say. It's hard. Lots of trees. I think these are good things.

Other Thoughts:

I am from CO and have no other courses in this area to use as a reference. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this round. The fairways were very clear and a definite change in terrain if you landed in the rough. I hit a ton of trees but very much enjoyed it.

A great design requiring a variety of shots. Stay on the fairway or be prepared to shoot through a mass of trees. Will definitely come back here my next time in town.

we had a ball 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

lovely park around the course makes this even more enjoyable.
baskets in great shape, and marked well.
variety of distance, vertical, open, wooded, right/left, and creek.
this course will challenge most of us with its long narrow woodsy fairways.
each tee (blue tee) had a sign with all necessary info and a nice pic of the hole.
plenty of parking.
course map available on this website helped us find the tees we couldn't see from the basket.
some holes are a real technical challenge, especially if you miss the fairway.

Cons:

shared park with others, so look before you toss.
only 2 tee boxes per hole, some are shared.
hole 14! stay in the fairway! don't go left! ha ha
some tee pads are concrete (good), but some are like carpeting, which did add a degree of challenge in the woods, where footing was less sure at the tee.
some tee boxes are hard to find without a map, and require a little walking.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course 5 times last week. I took a number of buddies and we had a great time. By the end of the week, I had a handle on most of the holes and scored pretty close to par from the blue/long tees, which is good for my level/game. This course offers most all of us some great holes and good fun.

Challenging City Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Classic city park layout that mixes manicured lawn & trees with some all-wooded holes. A small creek winds through and creates a lush wetland area on a few holes.

Dual tees (white & blue) on every hole, great signage AND next tee arrows of the same colors on trees will guide you well.

This design allowed a nice variety of shot making with decent elevation on about 4 holes and just enough trees to punish errant throws and cause bogeys. Some of the pins are cleverly placed to cause nasty rollaways also.

Memorable Holes:
#10 - a low ceiling, narrow corridor RHBH shot that needs to turn left late to get over the creek and have a decent birdy run. To me, it seems like a real difficult shot to clear that trouble. Maybe the smart play is to lay up with a FH into the field on the right of the creek and pitch over. I really wanna try it again (and better my 5), which makes it a memorable risk/reward hole.

The rose garden late in the course was just gorgeous and really added to the experience.

Cons:

From the blue tees, this course was a bit righty dominant - not a deal breaker, but noticeable enough to mention.

The rough was a bit nasty around the creek beds, so be prepared to spot your discs.

Other Thoughts:

The tees had old carpet on them. Less than ideal, but on the dry day I played on, did not present any problems.

An earlier comment about the ghetto seemed unfounded from my POV. The neighborhood seemed pretty nice, actually! The park was well maintained, and although the tennis courts & old stadium seemed to no longer be in use, they did not look ghetto or trashy to me - just old. The people I saw playing, walking dogs, and enjoying the rose garden were not sketchy looking in the least.

Terrific Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 27, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent course set throughout a well-used city park. I would consider this my "home" course as I play much more frequently than any other.
- Ample parking right next to tee #1 and pin #18
- Large welcome kiosk with huge, detailed course map (includes elevation contour lines), flyers/info, scorecards (with course map and hole info on them)
- Multiple tees on 15 holes (the other 3 use the same box for blue and white), each marked with colored wooden boards - the different tees give you new look at the hole, not just a shorter version of the same lines
- Terrific signs with hole map and blue/white hole distances located at each blue tee
- "Next tee" markers (separate colored signs for blue and white) found near each basket to guide you to the next hole
- New DisCatchers are in great shape and stand out nicely against some of the wooded backdrops
- Excellent variety of holes - some open, some wooded, some grove, uphille, downhill, left, right, etc. - mainly a technical course, which I prefer
- I love how the holes give you options off the tee and let you see a variety of mindsets - Hole #1 - I've seen RHFH flex shots and RHBH frozen ropes; Hole #3 - some hyzer flip, some power hyzer, some FH; Hole #4 - some BH, some OH and one guy does a FH roller; Hole #9 - some spike hyzer, some FH, some RHBH anny, some thumbers; Hole #10 - some safe layups, some "go-for-it" low celing hyzer; Hole #12 - some FH, some BH, some uphill rollers; Hole #15 - some FH, some huge downhill anny
- OB and/or water makes you play careful on 5 or 6 holes
- Very few spots where you can get away with a bad throw without dropping a stroke or 2 - the course is definitely fair, though - I don't think there are any holes where you have no chance of being rewarded for a good shot and no real "poke and hope" drives
- Some picturesque holes - #18 is a beauty

Cons:

- Since it's in a city park, there are sometimes some "interesting" people interfering or distracting
- A couple tee signs have been vandalized and I think one basket marked, but all have been taken care of and fixed
- A few blind tee shots can make it tough to track your disc if you're playing solo (#12 and #15 mainly)
- Tee pads could still use improvement - they are slowly getting better over time as the course liasons work with the city for various approvals - 2 holes have pavers (blue/white share a tee on both), the other blue tees are all carpet now and the other white tees remain dirt/natural, I think
- Bridge over the small creek on hole #5 has probably been through 6 incarnations by now but keeps getting washed out - the team is working with city on installation of a permanent bridge
- Some cranky dog walkers

Other Thoughts:

Some things that I wouldn't say are clearly pros or cons:
- benches on half the holes
- getting a lot more popular (which is a good thing), but can lead to crowded periods and backups
- A lot of people think hole #4 is unfairly difficult - don't get me wrong, it's the toughest on the course, but with consecutive well-placed shots, you can get a long birdie chance or a solid par
- Walks from holes 5 to 6, 9 to 10, 11 to 12 and 17 to 18 are not exactly fool-proof or right next to each other, but just use the tee signs and you're fine

The cons don't deter me at all from playing this course frequently. This is a wonderful course that introduced me to the game and the designers did a wonderful job on this course (thanks to the Hoffman clan plus all of us DisCappers who maintain and improve it).

Pros:

Excellent Course. Both Blue and White Tees are fairly easy to find. There were SCORECARD in the box...amazing!!! They were smart to get corporate sponsors - hopefully this will result in a well kept-up course over the years.

Cons:

This course is straight-up in the G-H-E-T-T-O. There are bullet holes in the Welcome sign. Avoid engaging the locals at all costs. At a minimum this will be a distraction to your game. Tees need to be re-painted.

Other Thoughts:

If you want to play in the Capital region, good luck finding another course.

Fantastic course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 24, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a fantastic course. The tee signs are top rate professional ones, the fairways are mainly grass and are always mowed close for people who love rollers, and the pins are nice. I love playing there, it's a really nice park. Some of the holes are world class.

Cons:

Hole 4. Give me a break. Also hole 10 because the creek is quicksand down there so you will ruin your shoes trying to retrieve a disc. This creek, because it is so marshy and mucky, does not belong as part of a sporting venue except maybe women's bikini mud wresting.

Gem in the making 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Variety, variety VARIETY.
2. Two sets of tees with two different problems to be solved on each hole. The amateur tees are not just short "throw and putt" locations; they push the beginner to learn how to play the game.
3. Good risk/reward opportunities
4. All baskets well marked, all tees well marked
5. Score cards available
6. Bathrooms available
7. Lots of picnic tables, playgrounds, ball courts, etc. for non-disc golfing family members
8. Weekly doubles league 5 PM Thursdays
9. Good mix of long and short.
10. Close to food, gas, shopping (check out Play it Again Sports in Niskyuna for discs)
11. Nationally famous rose garden near hole #12 :)

Cons:

1. LOCK YOUR CAR, especially in the summer and on weekends
2. lots of dog #2 on the woods trails. Watch your step.
3. natural tee pads are sketchy at times.
4. I hate hole #4. Real b*tch of a long fugly hole from the blues with a landing zone where it's a crap shoot if you are going to be able to throw it down the narrow second shot alley.
5. Must be aware of other users at all times.

Other Thoughts:

I usually rate the challenge and fun factor of a course by the number of discs I had to take out of my bag and the number of different types of shots I had to throw. At this course I use all 14 of my discs every time i play it, I've had to use every throw I know, and have even learned a few new ones "on the fly" like rolling around a 90 degree corner with a forehand, skipping a tomahawk under a pine tree, and turbo-putting over a shrub. And when it gets windy, watch out, this course can eat you for breakfast. When they get funding for paving for the tee pads, this will be a 4.5 star course.

Decent course for being as young as it is. Back 9 has some good elevation change and the course does require an array of shot types

Cons:

Plays through a city park, so you will likely encounter pedestrians on the course. I had a pedestrian throw my drive back at me on one hole. Tees are subpar, most are natural. Aside from hole 15, most of the holes are pretty unimaginative and lots of them are simply poke and hope.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I would play the other nearby course, Jorleman Park, before I would play this one again.

Wouldn't go back 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an okay course. It has a variety of holes and there are a decent number if obstacles. The design of the course is actually pretty decent.

My favorite hole was on the back 9 and had a 100 foot straight section followed by a 90 degree right turn and a couple hundred foot drive. I think it was somewhere around 500 feet.

Cons:

The park is very trashy. It has graffiti everywhere, run down buildings, and tennis courts that are trashed. Some of the courts you pass have dilapidated signs from around 10 years ago advertising a tournament.

There are also a lot of beginners and little kids around. Many people are there playing with ultimate discs and not disc golf discs. The kids somehow managed to combine Ultimate and Disc golf into a mess of a game that gets in the way of people who are really playing the course.

There are people walking through the park, but they were one of the least objectionable problems with the course.

Other Thoughts:

The park gave me and the person I this course with the feel of a zombie apocalypse movie. The only saving grace was the placement of the holes. The only reason to play this course is if you live close by. I would much rather drive and extra 20-30 minutes and go to one of the other much nicer courses in the area.

A lot to like 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Full 18 hole course built through a city park. Plenty of parking and other park amenities close by. Long a short pads offer good flexibility for players of different abilities. Good variety in shots needed. There are straight tight shots, lefts, rights, up and downs. course keeps you interested all the way through.

Course plays mostly through woods, requiring good disc control and accuracy. A few holes are a little more open, but even those holes have a few mature trees around to keep you honest. Uses available elevation well, as well as the small creeks that run through the park. Basket positions are mostly used well to add difficulty or different lines of approach to the basket.

All in all, this is a pretty darn well designed course. No major flaws or mistakes to complain about. White and blue signs were even posted throughout the course directing you to the next pad.

Cons:

Course is in a city park so in a few cases it plays near areas where you might have to deal with other park users. For my taste #7 plays a little too close to the tennis court and fence. Not a huge turn off, but it could be a problem once in a while.

Some transitions between holes are not ideal. It's a walk back across the road from 5 to 6. The walk from 11 to 12 is also a little long. Bring a map to make sure you don't waste too much time wandering around. This is not unusual when you build a new course into a pre-existing park.

Natural tee pads. They were in decent shape given all the rain that had fallen, but hopefully they can get some concrete pads down the line.

Other Thoughts:

Central Park had a nice variety of hole desgins to keep things interesting. #4 is a 525' hole that weaves tightly through the woods. The design is really nice as it has a more than fair landing area about halfway down the fairway for a person to aim for.

#6 is a basic little 285' ace run, but has a good line of tree defense to make it a nice challenge. It looks like a great ace run, but doesn't play super easy.

#10 is a pretty tough 330' hole that has an OB creek on the left and a line of trees to the right. Then your disc must find a way over the creek, and up a short hill to the basket. Just a really nice hole.

#12 is a blind shot up a steep hill and then finishing into the woods. A real errant approach could wind up down the other side of the hole as the basket sits close enough to the edge of the hill to make you think twice on the approach. Good risk/reward shot.

I really liked the fact that this course mixes in very challenging holes, and a few shorter birdie and ace opportunities. It offers a nice balance of shots to keep everybody happy. Go play it when you are in the Albany area.

One of the Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a fantastic course. It is well maintained and runs through a beautiful park. It is relatively challenging and produced some high scores at a recent tournament, but each hole is fair and has at least one clear lane or approach. But probably the best aspect of this course is the balance and variety it has as it runs through groves, thickly wooded areas, across streams, uphill, downhill, and in doing so requires a wide variety of shots. To help show this I've tried to categorize each hole across several factors and have provided the summary below: (Longer holes can get two categories in some factors)

THROW DIRECTION (assuming righty backhand)
Anhyzer - 4
Hyzer - 5
Straight - 11
THROW TYPE
Technical - 7
Distance - 13

HOLE TYPE
Woods - 6
Grove - 8
Open - 4

ELEVATION
Steep Uphill - 2
Steep Downhill - 1
Mild Uphill - 4
Mild Downhill - 2

DIFFICULTY
Frequent Birdie (~10%) - 8
Frequent Bogey (~50%) - 10

OB FACTOR
High OB Risk (good throw needed to avoid OB) - 2
OB possible on errant throw - 5

Other Thoughts:

The course has a little bit of everything and is truly a gem for those living near Schenectady. It is difficult and will help you get better - most holes have a low room for error(see the bogey rates below!). Even the longer holes have tighter fairways than you would normally find on other courses, with the exception of 15 which ends up being fairly open, but this adds to its value in my opinion. The Capital District doesn't have a lot of courses, but the 3 it has with Central Park, Hyzer Creek and Joralemon are among the best. I live in Chicago and have played many courses across several states and multiple countries, and Central Park is the best one I've played.

An excellent course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Multiple tees. This is outstanding. Though I personally haven't played the blues yet, I've watched others. What a difference. This is what makes this course so outstanding as it makes it nice for players of all levels to play. Both tees can be challenging, however, from distance to tricky shots. Just because you are closer doesn't always make things easy!

- Diversity. The course has so many types of holes and shots you must make. It's a wonderful layout through a pretty park. Uphill shots, downhill shots, short and long. There are narrow fairways through the woods and shots where you have to avoid some obstacles. A little water, too, can make things interesting. It has something for everyone.

- Layout. The layout is strong and takes you to different parts of the park. There are times you might have to avoid people walking or hiking, but it's not that bad. You get to see different spots, which is nice. It's a nice and easy layout to follow with good tee signs and boxes.

- Baskets. Top-of-the-line Innova baskets are really nice and stand out. The yellow makes you know where you are shooting. The rattle of those chains, too, is so nice!

- First tee area. It's a cornucopia of information! A board keeps you up to date on the area for disc golf, there's a map and scorecards and it's a really nice spot to open.

- Upkeep. The course is in great shape and it kept well. You can tell the players in the area take pride in the course and do what they can to make things good for all.

- Hole signs. There are signs at the blue tees to show you a layout, par etc. Also, there's signs showing you arrows to which tees you are playing.

- Multi-seasonal. Though I've not made it to a winter season, this course seems like it would be good in all weather (well, maybe not several feet of snow, but still...). The front 9 layout is flat enough where tromping through some snow wouldn't be too bad and the yellow tops of the baskets would stand out nicely.

Cons:

- Crossing water on the one hole (No. 5). You have to hope a few cinder blocks. It will be nice if there's a more stable bridge added there.

- Hole signs for both tees would be nice. As it is, there are signs at the blues. But it would be nice if the layout was shown at the whites, too.

Other Thoughts:

This course is really made for all levels of players. The beginner can learn easily here (as I have done) and the expert must be able to do some wonders here with the longer tees and challenging shots.

This is one of the first courses I played when I started to dig deeper into my game. I love it and plan on playing it many more times. The people you might run into here are good people and helpful.

I look forward to watching this course continue to grow and improve. I think it will only get better.

AM and Pro tees to help rookies get started and pros to keep their chops up. Some holes are really challenging if you have trouble throwing far and straight, particularly 4 and 14. I love the baskets they are easy to find because of their color. All around great course very fun to play.

Cons:

Dog walkers tend to leave "presents" behind. 5 could use a bridge to cross the creek. Better markers around to park to help out of towners to find the first hole and parking lot.

Found people playing this course one day taking a walk through the park and feel in love with the game. Really glad they built one in the area and can't wait until they build more of them.

Nice course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course uses the terrain to its advantage. The holes all have signs and are very well marked. The park is a very nice park to go spend the day at with a pool and picnic areas. Its still a very new course.

Cons:

The paths are not worn in fully yet but give it time and this wont be a problem. The parking lot is tough to find if your an out of towner like I am but the directions on this site will solve any GPS problems you might run into.

Other Thoughts:

I was very impressed with this course the area around it is all very beautiful which makes the course very relaxing to play.

central park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-those beautifully new baskets.
-proximity to a high traffic area.
-the varying distances. (best ive ever played)

Cons:

-the signage is really poor (not for long)
-no signage for the amateur tees. my girlfriend played blind for the most part

Other Thoughts:

i was so psyched to see a course so near my childhood home, and i can say that give this course a couple years and it will probably be my all time favorite. the distance variants are simply fantastic, no hole plays the same way, its really great. however, the signage is basically art paper laminated then bolted to a tree somewhere. if this course is to receive the attention it deserves it NEEDS stand up hard posted signs.
otherwise, its a great addition to an already beautiful park. kudos to the guys who got the funding, and kudos to the city for helping it along.

edit-just found out the guys got the funding for new signs. looks like ill have to go home to see my family more often.
