Challenging mini-ravines to avoid - or to putt out from.

Navigation: To access the course, you must walk (better yet, play!) the Hippodrome course. From basket-14 of the Hippo, follow the broad path towards the fence. Eventually, find tee-1 to the right - basket-1 is down the slope to the left, barely visible, just before the fence.

The online map, while somewhat useful, was not correct. Holes 1-5 were a match.Real-6 = map-10. Real 7-9 = map 6-8. Real 10-11 = map 11-12. Real-12 not on map, but plays back/parallel to real 11&13. Real-13 = map-9. Holes 14-18 were actually 13-17 on the map. Follow all that? Let's just say it was a bit challenging to figure out when playing the course for the first time!

Short and (bitter) sweet, you'll only have a few holes on this course which are primarily open, and even these few aren't overly long, so this course is definitely about control ... and luck, definitely some luck. While shorter holes 1-5, with the ever-looming fence, and longer, more open-than-wooded holes 15-18, were all fine, the more memorable part of the course were holes 6-14.

Holes 6-14 are set in a small section of mid-sized pines. The ground is blanketed with pine needles, and the trees are scattered enough that all throwing lanes are quite fair - there's more air then lumber to hit, so to speak. Holes 6-9 are short, but the baskets are located on ridges or near the edges on min-ravines - maybe about 8' deep, and about that wide. A drive, or putt, even, could certainly find itself in one of these ravines - repeatedly! (Note: there are a couple ladders strategically located about to aid you in getting in and out of these ravines). You'll definitely need some good fortune to have a round where you don't enter a ravine.

Basket-10 is hidden in a small box-canyon, requiring a right-turner to enter. Holes 11-14 are longer and straighter than the earlier holes that play amongst the pines, but are actually tighter, as more trees (potentially) come into play.

The Hogback is certainly an interesting course to play, and will present you with many opportunities to work on your control game - and/or to putt from a ditch!

The course plays through a hilly forested area with a few holes out in more open areas. Most holes have elevation changes in play, nothing drastic but the hills are used really well to keep things interesting. There are straightforward uphill and downhill holes, but there are also holes with ravines, ridges, and a cave to add fun and challenge. One pin is placed on a narrow point with dropoffs all around, make your putt or you'll be down in the ravine with a tough comeback and no easy layup.

Though the course is very short, it has a lot of variety. The hole shapes have good variety, with a balance of right and left turning shots. The underbrush is limited, but there are enough trees that you'll be punished on many errant shots. The lines are tight, but fair, so there is definitely some challenge to shape your shots through the woods here.

Navigation is tricky in spots, the closest tee isn't always the correct one. It's difficult to find the course in the first place since it's tucked in behind the hippo course far from the parking area and kiosk. The tee signage is basic, and a few were missing. The baskets are all single chained, and prone to spit outs and cut throughs. The tees are natural, and several were pretty soft and rutted out.

The course does a great job using the available land and terrain, but it's very short and crammed into a small area. Some holes play right next to one another. The course is nice and technical, but really doesn't call for more than a mid or putter for nearly all the holes, a little more distance and challenge would make this a better course in my opinion.

This course is a nice complement to the open holes on the hippo course, and definitely worth a round while you're here. Beginners will find lots of trees and tight lines, but the lengths are short enough that it won't be too frustrating. More experienced players will find some challenges to their short game, but won't be really tested by this course overall.

Pine Valley is an added bonus if you are coming to play Hippodrome. Where I did not feel Hippo was as good as its reputation, I was pleasantly surprised by the "other" course here. This course offers a good mix of technical wooded holes and holes are that have varying degrees of openness. It plays over a wide variety of terrains utilizing elevation and several interesting features. Though the course is relatively short (only 1 set of tees unlike Hippo), and most holes offer birdie opportunities and are easy to par, the holes are fun and are by no means repetitive or boring.

There are several unique and memorable holes here and each has its own name. The tricky basket placements are a definite strength. Holes #7-10 is a stretch of holes you will never forget playing across narrow ridges, along ravines, over sink holes, and into cave-like rock formations. You are almost guaranteed to face some tough lies, and be sure to bring your camera!

Navigation is pretty easy with a map once you get started (finding tee #1 is the big challenge, see Cons*). Be careful as we almost skipped holes 12 and 13 as tee 14 is the first you see from basket 11.

It is on the same property as Hippodrome offering 2 decent 18-hole courses for the price of one. The land is used only for disc golf, so you do not have to worry about other activities interfering like you do on many parks courses.

Tees are natural and baskets have single chains. Tee signs are generic posts with laminated paper maps.

There is no parking lot- instructions are to park on the grass?- that just seems weird. The kiosk where you pay looked old and rundown. These things don't make this course very inviting when you first arrive.

*And then good luck finding #1 for Pine Valley- it is located behind a section of Hippodrome. Walk around the far end of Hippo and look for a shelter- tee #1 is somewhere past that. We actually moved our car from the kiosk to the end of the road and parked in a gravel turn around to make the long walk a little shorter. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks with you as you will not be coming back to the car for a while.

Cons for some- pay to play.

It is pay to play (honor system). $5/day might be a little steep to play here regularly, but you can play both courses, and it seemed to deter the casual player to the other local courses. We played on a Saturday afternoon in March with perfect weather and we only saw 1 other group of 3 while we played both Hippo and Pine.

Pine Valley is a decent little course that is not as well known as Hippodrome. I recommend planning to play them both. Throw in all the other Augusta courses, as well as IDGC, and you do have a solid disc golf destination overall.

A round at the Pine Valley Hogback DGC leave you smiling every time. The layout is mostly wooded, but not too heavily. Most of the holes are on the short side. Elevation changes are common as are hills, ridges and gorges throughout the course. Pin placements can be interesting to say the least, one is tucked 15 feet into a small dugout washed out of a hillside. Hard to park it, but I have seen it done. Tee boxes and baskets are all in good condition, and there are a couple of places to sit down. On a dedicated disc golf property, so pedestrians and traffic should never be an issue.

This is a very fun and unique course, consistent with the quality of all of the courses in Augusta. Not the most difficult by any means, but surely worth checking out. I would certainly recommend visiting this course.

As I mentioned above, the course is lacking some degree of difficulty. This is a small detriment in my eyes, but not a deal breaker. The tees are good enough, but they are natural, not concrete. I did not notice many trash cans. Aside from that I have very little to complain about.

The Pine Valley Hogback is totally worth checking out if you have an opportunity. Entertaining and memorable terrain is perfect for disc golf. The $5/all day fee is not bad, considering you can really get your moneys worth out of the 3 courses at this facility.

The Hogback course behind Hippodrome is a super-fun technical course which requires accuracy and some unique shot-making to score well. While not a "championship" caliber course by any stretch of the imagination, it is worth a stop to check out and has a few of the most unique fairway's I've ever seen including many mini gorges and mountains that look like they should be in a cave somewhere deep underground and then a basket which actually in a semi-cave! (I've uploaded a few pictures which showcase these cool features) Almost all of the holes are very short and tightly wooded - a driver will likely only be required for tight-turning holes and skip shots as a long putter or midrange will take care of nearly all of the distance holes here.

Challenge, there just isn't all that much to this course. If you have a poor drive, you'll likely still be close enough for an easy up and down - and all of the holes can be easily reached for birdie once the lines are practiced and figured out. Ideally, I'd highly recommend playing this course at least once, but would dread having it as a home course because it just doesn't have the complexity that will keep players coming back again and again.

If you are a course-baggin' addict like myself, I think this course is a must hit along with Hippodrome simply because of their uniqueness. You'll remember both of these as really cool, quirky places to play, not because they were mind-blowing great golf.

This is a short course that is mostly contained within a pine wood. Requires lots of control and solid putting skills. Makes good use of terrain. You can see the basket from most of the tees, but there are many wash-out ditches that greatly affect play and are invisible from the tee. Many of these ditches have ropes and/or ladders present to aid entry or exit. Hole 6 is the most obvious example of this: there are trenches in front of and behind the basket that are at least 10-12 feet deep. The area where the basket sits is just wide enough for the base of the basket. Many holes play on the sides of hills with huge roll away potential. There is one hole in a cave like structure that is very interesting. Hole 10 "The Hogback" is the signature hole. It is 270 feet and plays down the spine of a ridge. Down the right is a deep trench, and down the left is a steep hill that can produce 80-90 ft roll-aways. Climo took a six on this hole in the world championships, and there is a bridge dedicated to him there.

This course is short. This isn't a problem except 2 holes. Hole 5 is only 88 feet and even though is plays on a steep hillside to a basket that is mounted high on the pole, it isn't much of a challenge. Hole 8 is 108 feet looking straight at the basket. It does throw over a pit, but is an easy ace run. All of the baskets are single chain. There are no facilities for water or restrooms.

A great course that you should definitely check out if you are planning on playing Hippodrome. Doesn't have the same appeal as the Hippo to me, but still worth checking out.
