Once a year opportunity 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is the version of the Powell course that is set up once a year for the Texas State Disc Golf Championships. It plays seven new holes that aren't part of the standard Powell configuration. These new holes add more challenge to the course increasing it's SSA for tournament play. The new holes are longer and feature OB boundaries to test shot placement skills. It's fun to get a chance to play these holes that are set up for only a short period each year.

Cons:

The majority of the wooded holes of the standard Powell configuration are missing from the States configuration (they play as part of the "Tourney" course). The Powell-States course is dominated by long holes which heavily favor players with big arms.

Other Thoughts:

The Powell-States specific holes mainly play across the road in the greenspace that parallels the ball golf course. These holes are bounded by OB road on one side and OB cart path on the other side. Pin placements close to OB as well as on hills make approaching and putting key skills to have on these holes. With the TxSDGC tourney held in the Spring the conditions at this mostly open park are usually windy which can up the challenge significantly.

Holes #1-7, 10, 16-18. of the standard Powell configuration are also present on the States version.
