Short & Easy compared to Riverside 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a temporary course set up once a year for the Victoria Open tournament. A short technical course that favors accuracy over distance on almost all holes. The course flows well through the secluded Fox Bend portion of Riverside Park. Lots of birdie opportunities out here but beware the lurking OB on some holes that will steal them away. The off-fairway rough is rough enough to cost you a stroke, maybe two, but not bad enough to break your round. Tee signs were obvious, the grass was mowed and the course flowed well.

Cons:

The course location is prone to flooding and can be very muddy. Personally, I'd like to see a couple longer holes in this layout to balance it more for big arms. Vehicle access is restricted to the course area and parking is limited. Specific to the 2010 VicOpen event: the posted distances on the scorecard vs. tee sign vs. painted on the ground didn't always match up and was the cause of some confusion.

Other Thoughts:

As this is a temp course the baskets are not consistent and the tee boxes are all natural. The ground is really rough in some places. Overall this course is a good balance vs. the long, open bomber Riverside Park course. With the exception of a couple holes, playing this course for all '3's is pretty easy, so to be competitive you're forced to play most holes aggressively for the '2'. From what I heard the 2010 version of Fox Bend was a significant improvement over past years' versions of the course.
