Fun course that is well maintained drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Centrally located in Hattiesburg, only a few minutes from the USM campus
- new tee pads installed within the last few years
- great group of locals who play the course and all seem to be friendly.
- benches located at some holes, as well as trashcans to discard trash
- located in a large "sports complex", so the course and surrounding area all seems to be well maintained.

Cons:

- the course layout can be a little tricky if it's your first time there, but after I went once I pretty much had no more issues.

Other Thoughts:

During the spring and summer you may encounter snakes that poisonous. It is wise to always watch where you step and always pay attention when grabbing for a disc on the ground. This is a wooded course in south Mississippi, so snakes are just a part of this environment during warmer months, but some people may not be aware.

Play This Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a technical challenge for all levels. I play in Colorado Springs area... this is exactly the kind of challenge we all love to play. It has a few open holes to air out on... but most the time my mid ranges were working overtime!!

Cons:

A little hard to navigate the first time around.. but my wife and I figured it out... so you can too..

Other Thoughts:

DG Course is alongside a huge sports complex.. clean bathrooms.. course has benches.. if you are in the area.. play this course..

Boring 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2020 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Boring. No interesting holes. Several seem poorly designed. To make matters worse there are several BAD safety hazards due to intertwining fairways. One tee has a 280 foot BLIND throw to a basket within 10 feet of another basket. No way to know if it's safe to throw on that one. Mosquitos are bad too. Holes don't facilitate scoring separation. Hard to make a bogey. Massive park, but the disc golf course is crammed into a tiny area on its' outskirts. Clearly an after thought. Hard to navigate.

Specifics:
The course itself plays on the edge of a large sports park. Almost all the holes are wooded. Most baskets range between 160'-260' off the tee. Fairly defined fairways.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tatum Trails plays along the periphery of a well-tended city park, mostly through wooded areas that are otherwise unused with a few more open patches sprinkled in to offer some variety. Conflict with other park goers is thus minimized (although there are a few stretches where this may not be the case on a busy day). The course is short, meaning it's beginner friendly from a distance perspective and easy to play through quickly. It's a nice choice for locals looking to scratch the itch to play.

Most holes are heavily wooded shots in the 200'-250' range, offering some level of technicality. The more open complements to these allow for a reprieve and also improve the course's beginner friendliness. The movement between wooded and open sections is itself a nice positive.

Grooming was well done when I visited, albeit in late November. Parking is plentiful and the park has a number of other activities to engage in.

Cons:

I found many of the wooded holes offered unrealistic lines, courting luck and rarely rewarding the kind of sound technical game that wooded golf is meant to. The more open holes often had the opposite problem of providing no real consideration beyond "throw it towards the basket." Thus while the mix of open and wooded is nice in theory, neither seemed executed particularly well.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that the course is laid out in the park's periphery. It often seems squeezed into restricted confines at many points; navigation can be awkward, occasionally looping back on itself, and quarters sometimes feel cramped. Design options were thus limited and the course suffers for it. Perhaps it would have been better off had a full 18 holes not been crammed in.

The shortness of most holes limits variety and sometimes borders on the awkward.

Other Thoughts:

Tatum Trails isn't much of a destination course; I'd heartily recommend both Paul B. Johnson and Ashe Lake over it regardless of your skill level. These courses both have beginner-friendly aspects that are better designed than Tatum, and offer lines, obstacles, and distances that will be much more enjoyable to the experienced player. Tatum isn't a "steer clear" course, but there isn't really anything to lure you here specifically.

Cons:

Good technical course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of wooded fairways that are wide enough to be fair, but tight enough to be a big challenge. Good mix of lefty, righty and dead straight holes.

Cons:

Signage is lacking. Some of the holes double back on each other.

Other Thoughts:

I was able to meet two locals, John & Chris, who were kind enough to play a round with me and show me the layout. Looks like the locals are actively working on this course and more improvements sound like they are on the way.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

What it lacks in distance, it makes up for in technicallity. It's a full 18 hole course with a huge variety of holes. The only water hazard is small so its harder to lose your disc. Hole 13 is close to the first tee pad and makes for nice putt practice, as long as you keep an eye out for players coming through the course. Hole 18 is near 500' so you can give it all you've got. The baskets are kept in great condition and have plenty of chains.

Cons:

Most of the tees are natural for now, so weather makes a big difference. Some holes seem impossible to birdie (for a rookie like me).

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course. The layout of the course is nice and the park seems well kept. Signs lead the way to the next hole so you know where your going for your first visit. Chances are you wont have to play alone, because it seems many people play here

It grows on you 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-located at a very nice park
-decent mix of holes (open, tightly wooded, most holes turn left)
- nice baskets
- good tee pads considering they aren't concrete
- seems like they are working on it to make pro, am, and novice tees
- very little traffic even though it is located at a busy park

Cons:

- no concrete tee pads
- weird technical shots (90 degree turns and such)
- very short ( only one hole over 300 ft)
- very unforgiving
- poor layout especially if you wanna play just 9 (if you wanna end up back at your car, you have to play 13)

Other Thoughts:

I personally think this is the best course in Hattiesburg, mainly because I could not navigate the other two courses at all.

There are some strange holes here. #2 and #5 are like 90 degree right turns and tight woods on the right side.

Watch out for a creek near #2 and #17. Shouldn't come in to play but it could happen.

you need a boomerang for hole #3. The basket is very close but you can't through the woods. Just throw the disc up and you should be able to par.

#4 is one of the tightest holes I have seen.

#9,10,18 are the only truly open holes

#7 and # 11 are on top of a hill and you've got a 15' drop

#17 is almost impossible to par

#18 is a long par 3 500'

I recommend parking by 18, since there is a bathroom by the tennis courts and you will have a shorter walk to your car when you finish

Well... it's worth the price of admission. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice, well maintained park with ample parking.
-Trash cans all around parking areas
-Free to play
-Map of course on the gazebo at Hole #1
-The course flow is O.K. but the way it stays right outside of other used areas is great design. You really shouldn't have a problem with park-goers (parkies?) getting in the way

Cons:

-No benches or trash cans on the course
-Several of the holes were just bad - a 90° turn in the fairway on a short hole just makes you feel like you're laying up twice & a 180° horseshoe hole that the tee and the basket are almost side by side is novel but not much else.
-Navigation can be tough at times
-Not a horrible course, I really did enjoy it. It's just not very memorable

Other Thoughts:

Out of the 3 locations in Hattiesburg to play disc golf this one is at the bottom of the list for me. Once again, it's a really nice park with an 18-hole course, that seems to stay out of the way, with a nice mix of holes.
If you're stopping to play in Hattiesburg definitely play this one... only if you are able to play Paul B. State Park, too. Don't make this course your only stop.

Half and Half 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Reminds me of the courses that I learned to play the game initially in Northern California. Tight fairways, heavily wooded to light woods and semi-open. Very little water present, but adds to the difficulty of the holes in which it comes into play.

Cons:

No directions to the next hole. Back nine is not marked.

Other Thoughts:

If I were to decide between the courses in the Hattiesburg area, I would rather return to Tatum Park, as it will help shape your overall disc game.

The perfect home course for the Hattiesburg Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- No water (Which could be considered a minus for more advanced players), which means I won't be losing too many discs
- Decent hole lengths, nice variance from short to long
- Well marked course
- Nice variance between open and wooded holes
- Drink machines stocked with Gatorade and Powerade on site for a fair price ($1.25)

Cons:

- Very technical (which again can be a plus for advanced players), not very forgiving on heavily wooded holes
- No established tee pads yet. they've been in the works for a couple years and no results
- As of right now (July 11, 2012), there are yellowjackets on holes 4 and 7

Other Thoughts:

I'm still a beginner, but of the 3 main courses here in Hattiesburg (Paul B., Tatum, and Duncan Lake), Tatum to me is the best candidate for a home course. It's a very laid back course and has the best layout of all the courses in the area. It's easily the most beginner friendly (some would argue Duncan Lake is more so, but I disagree with the unforgiving and intimidating water holes). However, on the wooded holes, one mistake is typically worth two strokes, so a beginner should definitely take their time and play for accuracy over power.

A real challenge... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I really liked this course and had a good time playing. I really liked what the designers did with the use of space allowed. I was a bit skeptical about playing this course after reading the previous reviews but i gave it a chance anyway, and i am glad i did. The course was a real challenge. I also loved the basket placement on holes 6 and 7. You can't feel the wind while you are down under the basket but believe me it's there.

Cons:

Eventhough i really enjoyed this course it does have some issues. I LOVE tee pads and think that every course should have them. The pads were only marked with flags and some were missing. Some of the tee pads had loose dirt and some of them had big humps on them. The lack of good tee signs was also annoying. There were some makeshift tee signs but they only helped a little. Also the fairways were riddled with small tree stumps that caused my to twist my ankle on more than one occasion. I know this course is the work of several different parties including Hattiesburg parks and rec. I also know that parks and rec have enough money to improve this course and make it the real gem it could be. Come on parks and rec STEP UP!!!

Other Thoughts:

I think this course has the potential to be really really good, it just needs some TLC. This course was just what i needed to meake me realize that i still need a lot of work. I will comtinue to go back and play this course with the hope that the rec department will realize with a little work it could be spectacular.

Pros:

Course is fairly well marked. Good mix of wooded and open holes. restrooms available in the park. Some interesting holes where the basket is on the edge of a steep hill

Cons:

natural tees. A couple of the holes have long walks in between and are hard to find. There are still some holes where the angle of turn is so severe that you can't get to the hole with your throw. The other non-blue tees can be hard to find. I did not see the novice tees that are listed at all.

Other Thoughts:

This is a totally new course from when I reviewed it before. It was only 9 but is now 18. this is now a fun course and I enjoyed playing there. there are things I would change but it's worth the trip to play there.
