Fun & Technical Golf

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Amazing use of the available land - This was my first time playing in San Antonio and I was not expecting so many trees and very steep hills/ravines and the course designers did a masterful job of creating challenging but fair and fun lines.

Tests all phases of your game - This has shots that require everything from big distance to downhill touch, left to rights, right to lefts, hard doglegs that require skips to get to the circle, tight but fair gaps, height (lots of low ceilings), and angle control.

Great risk and reward opportunities - Particularly on the putting greens, you are going to be put to decisions. About half of the holes had significant rollaway potential. I had a circles edge birdie putt on 14 which has a particularly challenging pin location, ran it, bounced off cage, and rolled 50+ feet into a ravine that I had to really scramble to save bogey. On the longer more open holes, you can play safe off the tees taking birdie out of play or play a faster disc but risk skipping into the brutal rough (lots of cactus). Very thoughtful design.

Tee pads - large, concrete tee pads with about half of the holes having short pads too.

Cons:

Signage - Very few tee signs were still there. Looks like they had nice signs but there has been some vandalism. Numerous holes required you to walk pretty far up fairways to see the basket/line.

Amenities - Very few benches, next tee arrows, and the basics you would expect from a course of this quality. If I did not have the UDisc app to help me find the next tees, I would have been in trouble particularly since most tees/baskets don't have visible hole numbers.

Other Thoughts:

Really enjoyed this course. I highly recommend it particularly for Intermediate/Advanced level players. I am low 900s rated, played pretty well, and shot even from the longs with 6 birdies, 6 pars, and 6 bogeys.

A fun and challenging course for all players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really enjoyed the layout; you had to use all your throws. There were several very hard dog legs - either left or right- that made for some challenging tee offs. There was signs on every hole, along with trash cans, which is a plus. I also liked that you can tell these people put in work to maintain a good looking course.

Cons:

I didn't like the cactus in the OB, so definitely stay out of there. While there was signage on each hole, the graphics were a bit fuzzy. Also i'm guessing during the summer months insects and other critters might prove to be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

I think if you're in the area and you're looking to play, this should be in your top five. I'd definitely play again.

Varied, Technical Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

As I've taken some time to stew over a frustrating round here, I find myself wanting to play this course again after a couple days away. Some of the pro's:

- Elevation: Up in Austin, most courses don't offer any elevation variety. This course has a great mix of hills, valleys, oddly placed baskets and brief hikes. Also the rough is punishing elevation-wise, which adds a great element of challenge

- Technicality: The majority of the holes are weaving through forest or through tree-scape, which makes a round enjoyable not only for the shade but also for the challenge. Personally I'm working on straight consistency, so a lot of the holes that run thin are greatly challenging and rewarding.

- Variety: Decent amount of Par 4's, but the Par 3's aren't shy either. Even the 155ft downhill putter hole #5 is followed by 2 bomber holes. Combined with the aforementioned elevation changes, it makes for a nice change of pace course.

- Shot Variety: I throw everything- RHFH, RHBH, Overhead... I got to utilize everything here, which adds a dimension to a course that's difficult to build. Technically you can throw anyway you want always, but for more skilled players having the options to attack courses with their full arsenal really makes a course memorable.

- Signage: Very rarely did I find myself wondering where the next hole was. Admittedly some need updating, but I won't knock a course heavily for that

- Hole #18: I like to finish strong with something to remember about a round, and having a near 400ft downhill bomber hole is a great example of a personal pleasure about a course- a great last hole.

- Parking: It's easy to access either the park (top of the hill) lot or the neighborhood lot that is really close to the first tee

Cons:

Some of where I feel this course can improve

- Natural cleanliness- The lack of trash was great, but the course definitely needs some nature cleanup. There was a lot of overgrowth throughout the course that could be addressed. Best response is to not throw that way, of course, but some of it was really lengthy grass and stickers everywhere

- Signage: Needs updating. Some of the distances were whacky and didn't exactly depict the holes very well. Not exactly a con, but for a first round I believed the signage quite a bit and was thrown off a few times.

- Seating: It would be nice to have a few more holes have some seating. This is for improvement, as many holes do.

- Teepads: I could see some gradual improvement with a couple newer pads, but some are very constricted and old. It'd be nice to be able to have some newer pads that are a bit more modern

- Baskets: Some Innova Discatchers, but some seem older than me. Eventually I see these being replaced, but for now make note that some of the baskets aren't in the best shape.

Other Thoughts:

I walked away frustrated at this course, not in quality but in personal play (hungover, dehydrated due to poor preparation, sore arm due to bad/pissed off FH form...). After a week or so I'm looking back wanting to play this course again. DGCR rates this as a 3, which is good, but my real-life rating is about a 7.5/8. If I caught this course on a remarkably clean, trimmed day and more baskets were newer, it would go up. I like this course overall and do suggest visiting

First Time Impressions of UC course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

What a great course to play as a beginner who wanted to find out how their game was going after playing a few rounds at Schlater Park. This had almost everything I was looking for as shot selections on certain holes had to be changed/altered... you couldn't throw the same backhand on every hole. A great course to improve your game and putting. It was a great hike and very peaceful when you played. Was a great step up from the beginner course at Schlater Park...will be hitting this more often.....

Cons:

Not so much a con, but because this is a great course, a lot of people will be playing and you may have a wait time or be stuck behind slower players. Also, I followed a group to learn where the next holes were as some did not have a clear path to where to go next. Hole 3 or 4 was a good walk with no clear signs and I would have missed it just on my own.

Other Thoughts:

Excellent course but do wear some hiking shoes of some kind. Very hilly and you will slip in tennis shoes..There also may be a wait time as this is a busy and popular course. But worth the wait to play.....

UC:Top 2 Favorite Courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Super diverse course layout. At the very least you get a taste of how complete your game is and what you need to work on. UC has wide open long holes for the big guns, short wooded holes requiring control and finesse shots. Doesn't matter how you throw RHBH, LHBH, RHFH, etc. UC has a hole or 2 that u will have u using your hyzer & anhyzer shots. Unless you enjoy playing solo, I've never had any trouble finding a partner or group to play through with. I've only been to this course 1 time and it have less than 3 - 5 players playing rounds & that was due to 3 days of start & stop rain. Also as far as the ground conditions go, UC can be played before, during, & after inclement weather, unlike some of the other courses in the area like McClain or Live Oak.

Cons:

For first time players at UC, after hole #3 finding the tee pads may be somewhat challenging if you don't look at the tee sign & see which direction to head. Very difficult to locate errant throws on some holes due to thick trees, brush, and very large mutant cactuses growing unchecked down either side of the fairway. So losing a disc is very possible. Also apparently to exist in San Antonio ALL plants, animals, and insects must be able to perform 1 or all of the following: bite, scratch, poke, sting, stab, irritate, draw blood in some way, shape, form, or fashion, cause serious bodily harm or death

Other Thoughts:

One thing I definitely want to mention and make sure other DG'ers that are new to the area know about the SA disc golf community is how respectful, courteous, friendly, honest, helpful, etc. the entire community is. Can't say enough about how impressed i have been. I've lost twice as many discs in SA, over the last 2 months than I have over the last year of playing my home courses in/around NW Louisiana. All but 1 disc has been returned.

The Deeper I Went, The More Impressed I Became! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Universal didn't impress much as first glance. The kiosk has seen better days. The concrete tee pads are old. The 1st basket looked as though it had been finger painted by a 6 year old year. The woods did kind of have that Blair Witch Project feel to them (and I was on the course just before sunrise).
But then the course just continued to grow on me. Everywhere I went, I saw evidence of hard work by a club or individuals who actually care about this course. I'm talking about trash cans at almost every hole. Benches at many holes. The bell at # 6 to let players following know the "Coast is Clear." No signs of any vandalism. Almost no litter. Some helpful next tee arrows/signs.
There's were lots of challenging basket placements and/or great overall holes.
# 9 throwing through a narrow window to a basket perched on a ridge with danger all along the left side here. I think this is a great hole from pad to basket.
# 10 with the basket up on the ridge was good!
# 11 was a cool tee pad placement and then the fairway through the trees.
And # 13 is something else. It starts with a sharp hyzer off the tee. From the long it's 375'. Once you turn the corner, you see the basket past these smallish mounds of dirt. I didn't realize that just behind the mounds was a very deep gorge, 25 ft. deep, with the basket still on the other side. And there's lots of trees to hit and drop your disc into the gorge.
Next hole # 14 looks simple at 275', with a fairly narrow fairway. But then I noticed that this steep, deep gorge runs to the left of the fairway all the way to the basket.
# 15. Same serious scary gorge on the left all the way here too. Be careful you don't skip on the hard ground into this ravine!
And then # 18 has two baskets. One is 245'. The other is 285'. Both are fun downhill tosses. I'm sure I would always play them as 18 A and 18 B. Why not?

Cons:

This is an older course that is starting to grow weary. The baskets are old and creaky. They're not young and taunt like an 18 year girl, anymore. Same with the concrete pads.
Not really a Con but do you really need such a huge tee pad for # 5, a 155' downhill? Does anyone take a six step run-up for a 150' downhill floater? Just wondering? Seems like a waste of cement?
The kiosk sucks!

Other Thoughts:

My hats off to whoever is keeping this course up. It's a superd course with so many interesting and challenging holes. It was so much more enjoyable than I expected. San Antonio disc golfers should feel quite privledged to have so many excellent choices in the area but I have to believe that Universal City DGC is my favorite out of the 17 San Antonio area courses I've played this week.

Pros:

This is a fun short 18 holer. I played this course in about 45 minutes. I really appreciated the quality tee pads and tee signs.. Hole 7 has a nice bridge to get you to the other side. The course makes the most out of its elevation. Hole 5 is a short down hill where 9 you throw across a valley. 10 is slightly uphill where as 11 is a steep incline. Universal offers very tight wooded holes to some open ones on the backside of the course. I love tight wooded courses and this course provides that on numerous holes.

Cons:

The baskets were in a little bit of rough shape. There aren't too many other cons besides the navigation that everyone else has mentioned. FInding hole 4 can be a challenge as well as number7. Number 7's teesign is labeled wrong it is definitely not 255 feet, more like 450ish. Hole 13 can be a little dangerous. To get to the basket you have to go down then up a very steep incline. There is a flatter path a little to the left but as a first time player at Universal I didn't know that. Holes 17 and 18 were a little boring because they were in the completely open. Also, 18's basket is right by the practice basket so I threw to the wrong basket( 18 is the closer one to the tee).

Favorite Course in SA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good tee pads. Fun hole variety. Lots of different shots are required. The course is seemingly never too busy.

Cons:

The newer holes in the back could use some cleaning/refinement. There is a lot of home construction and other kinds of trash sprinkled around. There are a couple of tee pads that were poured but no longer used and those could be removed.

The course probably favors right handed players.

A couple of the holes are probably too short/gimmicky.

Other Thoughts:

This has become my favorite course in the San Antonio area.

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is a short, technical course with a lot of dog legs going each direction. There is a good mix of open holes compared to wooded holes but there are far more wooded holes then open holes.
The concrete tee pads are long and very nice, the tee signs are all present and have the information on the sign; they just are a little worn down.
-There is a lot of elevation on the course. Some holes throw down and then back up a hill, and some basket placements are on a hill which will make putts roll down the hill. It adds a little bit of challenge when putting..
-There were bells at a few holes to signal to the group on the tee pad that you are clear from the basket. I thought it was a good added touch to the course.
-The baskets are all different varieties of baskets but all of them have two sets of chains plus a few extra chains so slip outs are very rare.

Cons:

-Navigation is a pain in the butt. After hole number three it is a long walk to #4 and a few other holes you are kind of guessing what path to take to get to the next hole. There are no signs telling you where the next tee is.
-The brush off the fairways is quite thick. So keep it in the fairway. When I went out and played a few groups ended up losing a few discs from errant shots into the thorns and brush.
-This course is busy. Most groups seemed courteous to let you play through but you may have to do a bit of waiting.
-Like mentioned before the tee signs are worn down and some are starting to become illegible. It would be nice if they replaced the tee signs with newer and more vibrant signs.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised when I came to this course. It is tough but not overly tough. San Antonio does not have too many courses but this is a good place to go play. I have not played Live Oak yet and know that it is very close to this course but this would be a good place to bring a newer player. It plays fairly quickly and it is not too long or too wooded, just a lot of dog legs. This is a course to definitely hit if you are in the area.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Notta bad little course right here. There is jsut about every kind of shot there is here. This course doesnt favor one player over another. It is very fair and plays evenly for the righy and the lefty. Alot of the short holes here have lines that if you dont hit them your score will skyrocket quickly. Most of the greens have some sort of "trick" to them and you have to be aware of to score well. Not a lot of elevation but where there is it is used to the best. The concrete tees are nice here and make for good footing off of the tees. The fun factor is high here because of the variety of shot selection and hole types.

Cons:

The grass was very overgrown and there were a lot of debris scattered throughout the course. Navigation is not very easy for a first timer even though I played the old layout and its on the same land. Lots of blind holes and areas where you have to walk around to find the basket or the next tee. You could use a spotter to save time on the blind holes because of the tall grass/debris.

Other Thoughts:

Doesnt seem like it would be very beginner friendly. If the debris would get cleaned up and there wasnt knee high grass throughout, it would rank higher. There are some bells by the baskets on the blind holes tpo ring and let the guys on the tee know your clear.

Pros:

This is a good course with having the potential of being a great course. This course has holes that will challenge every level of player. I found myself pushing the limit on shots on several holes just to stay in the range of par. Best holes on this course are 7 and 13. Hole seven has you teeing off just before the creek and trying to make the basket 600 feet away in 4 shots. A good challenge. But, even a better challenge is hole 13. It has you teeing off toward a rise 150 feet away, then the fairway takes a dogleg to the left and tossing toward the basket on the other side of the creek 225 feet away. A very tough hole to achieve in 4 shots. Trash cans at various locations and benches at quite a few of the holes. Well maintained course.

Cons:

Not many to note here. No restrooms hardly to speak of and a couple holes could use new tees. Navigation is somewhat muddled in the middle of the course, but not tough to find your way around.

Other Thoughts:

I have enjoyed playing here all 3 times I have played at this course. Almost better than Live Oak City Park, and that is saying something. Live Oak is good. This one is just as good. Great challenge course for all levels. Recommended for any disc golfer.

An Interesting course.... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 4, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some of the holes are quite fun to play. Even though there's a lot of short holes, I can imagine this course being a fun course to do an ace race with your friends.

Even though the signage, and navigation could be improved, the layout wasn't too confusing for a first-timer like me. I had a map with me, and it's pretty easy to navigate.

There is definitely enough variety in shot selections for many people here, and that is something that this course have to offer.

Cons:

Few of the hole designs are well-meaning, but not quite successful. It does feel like this course was designed by a righty, so the course does not quite feel like it's neutral.

Baskets are quite old, and I noticed that few of them were slightly damaged. I realize that those things are expensive to buy, but compared to other courses in the area, the difference in quality is quite substantial.

Few of the pin placements, to me, were not ideal. I can imagine erosion will be going to be a problem for this course in the future. The first obvious example is the hole #13 with the A pin placement.

Tee pads aren't as good as they seemed to be. I was surprised to see that at least couple of them aren't even level.

Other Thoughts:

Who is this course for? I can imagine people with all skills level can enjoy this course, because many of the holes are short enough for people who doesn't throw that far (or beginners) but it can be technical for more advanced players.

The proximity of this course to McClain and Live Oak would be something people would like if they wanted to have a nice, long day of playing disc golf.

I can't quite feel like I can justify giving this a course higher rating than I would give Live Oak or McClain Park. (Hey, I haven't reviewed them yet, but they factored in my mind in how I rated this course.)

I'd come back here again if I'm coming to the city for a long day of disc golf. I think I'd play this as a wind-down to either Live Oak or McClain.

Universal Favorite 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 13, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Nice big concrete tees are always nice to see when you walk up to a new course.

2) Nice new benches in a few places for you to sit down on your round or while you wait for the people in front of you.

3) # plates and yellow painted tops of the baskets are always nice to see, but I couldn't tell if these were DGA or a homemade version of such.

4) Lots of woodchips used ont he course and in the right spots. This covers up a lot of the unsightly areas and it also reduces the soil erosion and impact of the compacted soils.

5) Awesome property . . . it has a wonderful mix of holes and design characteristics.

6) Nice infrastructure with a nice bridge on one of the holes out in the prairie type part of the course.

7) Diversity of foliage density going from dense woods, to some parklike holes, to some prairie type holes. Its always nice to see a little of everything.

8) Water in play on a couple holes bu most likely only at certain times of the year.

9) Nice use of a major neighborhood drainage way incorporated into the design. Even if there is no water, it uses the slopes well and meanders around this area very well.

10) Challenge is every present and in all sorts of different techniques.

11) Some directionals helping you navigate the course, but it could use a few more.

12) I was out there on a weekend and there was a worker crew out picking up the garbage from the course . . .it seemed almost out of place for a disc golf course, but it was nice to see.

13) Nice elevation change on a lot of these holes . . . it isnt all that dramtic of a change but it is enough to really alter your shots.

14) Nice diversity of shots needed to play well here.

15

Cons:

1) Not really beginner friendly, but with well executed shots it isnt really what I would say is unfair.

2) Loose rocks all over he place and the mowed down prairie areas are tough to walk through and seem like thye could use some grading work.

3) Compacted soil in a lot of place. Erosion and compaction are troublesome on disc golf courses as I feel it is just another reason municipalities and other places will refuse to install a course.

4) Lots of places where you cross a walkpath or a path to another hole which can cause confusion.

5) Old tee signs from the old layout so that can also lead to confusion especiall for a travelling disc golfer like myself.

6) A few more directionals could be helpful.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of those courses that isn't the prettiest, it is the best maintained, but it is really funa nd really challenging too. I would play this course allt he time if I was in the area.

Loved this course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course starts out with good signage and "next hole" signs. There is a great mix of short and long holes that require a bunch of different shots. I really like the elevation changes and the big ravine(s) that come into play on many of the holes. Overall a great, challenging course.

Cons:

I think some changes have taken place to this course and the signs just need to be updated. One hole needs a tee pad and some of the baskets aren't in the best shape. After the beginning where the holes are clearly marked and signage is correct, a first-timer would really need someone to show them around, which luckily I had.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline, this is a great track. With some updated hole signs and few more signs directing players to the next hole, this could really be an exceptional course. I could see it being fairly frustrating for a new player, but a great challenge for players with a little experience. You really need to be able to throw ALL the shots to do well on this course. I've never had to throw so many high overhead shots and low skip shots (both left and right), but it was great to have to on this course. If you're in or around the San Antonio area, you owe it to yourself to give this course a try.

Pros:

Course is kept well, or was when I played it. The tees and basket areas are clear. Not to difficult to navigate between holes, just be sure to check the map at the first tee.
There is a good flow overall starting and ending right at the parking area. If you stay in fairway your good, if you go out watch for cactus. Benches are available on a lot of the holes.
There are good elevation changes, short "go for the pin" holes if you can get your line through the trees. For a beginner it would be a challenging course, if you have a good variety of shots in your bag you will have fun.

Cons:

The navigation between some of the holes was difficult the first time through (I did not study the map well enough on hole one ;)

-I really like the way this new layout flows. Holes 7-13 are new and fresh. Hole 7 really lets you air out with two clear paths to take, but don't forget about all of your possible shots. As a lefty, I am constantly looking for new options. Hole 8 is a tight left off the tee. Play off the bounce for a closer shot. Hole 9 is a sweet valley shot, ending up and to the left. Be careful, the basket is on an island and a selfish shot could end up in the brush. Hole 10 and 11 play identical. Both are a short tee shot to a basket behind a gate of trees, if you will. A bouncer will be rewarded greatly, but control is key. Hole 12 is a unique shot. For me (left handed, remember) it's a backhand with lots of snap. the basket is located halfway up a hill and to the right, behind a treeline. the clear line is around them wide, but a well controlled straight shot will be greatly rewarded. Oh did I mention the 6 foot hill right in front of the tee? Hole 13 is a short valley shot out of the woods and dog ears left to a flat fairway. Hole 14 is an oldie but a goodie, a recycled hole from the old layout. Basket sits on a dirt island and a wide right hyzer (for me) will take you there. Hole 15 is along the creek (which is never filled with much water) and basket sits in a clearing to the right. But again, many trees are scattered in between. Literally. There isn't really any pattern to them, narrow spaces in the middle, wider tunnels on the side. Go too far and you'll end up in the river (which isn't).

Cons:

No new signs, but new benches? Seems like something that should be taken care of before benches. Very minor.

Other Thoughts:

I love the new layout! Like I said, best place to put a new disc to the test. I love seeing my scores get lower and lower each time I play it. I'll be coming to this course for a very long time.
