A Nice 9 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 31, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Great signage; good tees and baskets

+ One of the best places in the State to introduce new players to the game: it's a short and open layout, but it has all the touches of a real course (maps, tee boxes, signs - it's a course that asks you to respect the game and understand there are rules, not just a park with baskets to throw at)

+ Although it's an open layout, the design uses every little bit of elevation it can find, and even creates some with a raised basket. This means you really have to think a bit about wind, fade and throwing height on at least half of the holes

Cons:

- As others have noted, some of the course winds around playing fields, so plan your trip when it's less likely the fields will be in use

Other Thoughts:

~ RHBH players: keep it level and watch out for fade on holes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6

~ At 337 feet the par 4 eighth hole is a likely candidate for a player's first eagle

~ I love courses by scouts, by community groups and by schools. Freehold HS is a notch above, because of the care and thought that went into the design

Beholding Fine Freehold's Nine 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 17, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Every single tee pad, while on the small side, is made from tiled concrete. They feel sturdy and level underfoot.
+ Each and every basket has a 'next tee' sign attached to it, even though the following tees are very close to the previous baskets. Some 18-hole courses out there could learn a thing or two from this course.
+ All nine tee pads have tree trunk benches. For a tiny course like this, that's a nice surprise to see.
+ The colorful tee signs clearly indicate the par and distance on each diagram.
+ Gentle elevation changes.

Cons:

- I did not see any of the other tee pads for the longer layout, despite some longer measurements on this course's page. Did I miss something?
- Mostly flat, always wide-open, and brief distances make for an under-stimulating round.
- No wooded holes at all.
- The course plays too close to athletic fields. It will not be playable during sporting events or if there are students around.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole here was definitely 3. The tiny stream combined with the raised basket made the hole feel like it was just an ace-run hole at a much larger park. My least favorite hole here could be hole 5 because of how plain it was.

As for the course as a whole, Freehold High School's 9-hole course was a surprise. All of the tee pads, signage, baskets and benches were present and in decent shape. The course is very consistent, which I liked very much. That just by itself earned the course several marks. This is just the course to go if a new player wants to learn how to throw far. There are no trees to get in the way (for better or worse), and the fairways are large enough to accommodate a novice's errant tosses.

Holes 4 - 8 play around a soccer field, however. There are bleachers and athletic equipment to avoid. During a game, this course will be full of players and spectators. During school hours, this course will be full of students.
Also, the holes feel too similar. Numerous flat and wide-open throws dead ahead are good for the beginner to get a feel for their discs, but more seasoned players will undoubtedly be more focused on getting birdies. There are some gentle elevation changes like with holes 1, 2 and 9, but, like with everything else here, they are more for the beginner to overcome than the multi-year player.

Bottom line: Freehold HS has a nice gentle collection of holes to play featuring good tee pads and signage. Understand going in that it is only meant to serve as a kind of wide-open training ground for novices, and you will have a leisurely time trying for birdies.

Good Practice Spot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 12, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good local spot to get in some practice. Open field school course. Very short holes, wide open, very little to challenge the avg. disc golfer, but an excellent quick stop to get some discing in. Great sign board at the beginning of the course, good info and course map.
Basic 9 holes, good putter/midrange course to work on your upshot accuracy. Good to know there is a practice in central Monmouth Co.

Cons:

So many baskets within each tee...short course. Uninteresting to play as designed. I mix up the tees/holes to make it challenging. When school is in progress, unplayable. As it is on weekends when the ball field are being used.

Other Thoughts:

Nice to see a highschool working to promote the sport. I like the option that this course provides to get in some practice when I'm in the Freehold area. Now....will Turkey Swamp pick up the ball and lay down a disc golf course, now that Ocean County Park has put in a new 9 holes...soon to be 18.holes. Perfect spot for an 18 holes!

Great for Beginners & Practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is good for what it's worth, and that's a nice open course for beginner's to learn and practice the game. It's got nice signage, nice baskets, an flowing layout, and it's short.

Cons:

It's not very challenging, and it's only 9 holes. Also, there is a lot of geese shit. And, it's unplayable when the fields are being used (by students, I might add. It is a high school, so high schoolers should get preference, but I've played there when there were a bunch of elder soft ballers there.)

Other Thoughts:

Having no other courses in Monmouth County, this is your only/ best bet. If you're there, and there is no one else there, you can make up your own, more challenging holes.

Ace Run High 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Tons of ace run opportunities.
- Great for driving putters & midranges
- Beginner friendly
- One hole has a decent (320'+) length which allows you to air out a driver
- Nice signage on each hole as well as a good info kiosk. Arrows on the baskets point you to the next tee.
- Quick round if you're pressed for time.

Cons:

Holes are really short. Even with the alt tees (which I couldn't find), they weren't very challenging. Most of them hold a straight line, which can be achieved with virtually any throw.

- Doesn't utilize any of the wooded area nearby. Not sure if this belongs to the HS, but it would have been a nice terrain balance to the monotonous open air holes.

- Since the baskets are peppered all around a bunch of fields, there's some fairway crossing issues. This is especially true with holes #2 and 9.

- There's a lot of equipment that can get into the way of your throws: batting cages, soccer nets, football fields, etc. Obviously this course would be unplayable if any athletic event or practice was going on.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely your typical high school disc golf course: baskets weave around football/soccer fields, all holes are short and wide open, and poses no real challenge.

I get that this course isn't designed for the touring pro, or even the 800 rated player for that matter. It's a nice recreational opportunity for locals in Freehold. I also love how it is designed for introducing high schoolers to disc golf! Must be a great phys. ed class!

Come for the ace runs but don't make a major destination out of it.

Great place to start 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Clean, great disc catchers. Great for beginners and to sharpen up skills

Cons:

Not great if you need a challenge. Very fast course time

Other Thoughts:

I am a total rookie to the sport. So far so FUN! This course is 15 mins from my house and I frequent this place. It's extra clean great disc catchers. A great place to hone skills. If kids are using the baseball fields it might be difficult to play.

a good way to kill time if you're only 15 minutes away 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you're in the area, I'd recommend giving it a try. There isn't much exciting here, but it isn't a bad course. There are holes that vary from 160ish feet up to around 280 feet.

Cons:

The fields behind the school where the course is look pretty dumpy and there is a fair amount of trash in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't drive more than 15 minutes to play this course.

It is what it is 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is what it is....and it is a course meant for school kids. I think it would be more appropriate for middle schoolers than high schoolers, to be quite honest. It is great for groups of kids, like scouts to get introduced to the game and to have a group instruction. And I applaud the effort to get a course into a school athletic grounds. I would have loved to have that as a kid for sure.

Cons:

If you compare disc golf to golf....this would be a mini golf course. If you played disc golf before and you consider yourself a decent player, there is no need to bring more than 1 putter.

Other Thoughts:

Go and play there if you live close by and you have little or no experience playing disc golf.

Go there is you want to improve your short game and putting.

Do not go there if you have to drive a long distance - you may be disappointed.

Do not go there thinking that it will be a challenging round.

It is what it is. And for that I will give it a rating of 1.5.

A Dream Realized 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This 9 hole course with brand new Innova baskets was installed in June, 2010 for the purpose of teaching high school students the sport of disc golf. A nice welcome board was constructed and installed by hole #1. Brand new paver tee pads were recently installed by an Eagle Scout and numerous volunteers. Log benches- made from the downed trees caused by Hurricane Sandy exist at 8 of the holes. There is a little variety- a downhill shot (hole #1), a nice winding hyzer (hole #2), a short shot across a gully to an elevated basket (hole #3), a neat little shot around a batting cage (hole #7), the obligatory bomb (hole #8) and an uphill shot to finish (hole #9). Hand made "next tee" signs attached to each basket make navigation simple. Permanent tee locations are marked with painted wooden 6 x 6 posts with small signs listing hole number, par and distance; professional grade signs will be installed in 2016. There is space at six of the holes to lengthen the distance if a greater challenge is desired. The grounds are well maintained, and this course serves as both a great training location for those learning the game and a fun little area to play recreationally or to work on your short game.

Cons:

This is not a course designed with the advanced or professional player in mind. Limitations with surrounding athletic fields and the need to supervise classes playing the course limited what could be done when designing the layout. Public use is restricted to weekends, off school hours and when athletic fields are not being used. Holes 5 and 6 are repetitive in design. Goose and deer droppings sometimes present on areas of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Freehold Township High School has the proud distinction of being the first high school in New Jersey to have a permanent disc golf course installed on its property, the vision of Physical Education Teacher Frank Gualtieri, Supervisor Pat McEvoy and Principal Elizabeth Higley. Its purpose is to implement the game into the P.E. curriculum and introduce students to this fun sport. A lot has been done aesthetically to make the FTHS course a nice, recreational playing experience. This course is a training facility- not a course for challenging rounds among advanced players- and must be taken for what it is. It's unfortunate the vast wooded property couldn't be incorporated into the layout. Consider playing this course along with the 9 hole course at the Manalapan Rec. Center 15 min. away then head to Thompson Park in Jamesburg for a more challenging 18 hole course!
