Decent public park design. drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Decent rubber Tee-pads.
-Baskets in good shape.
-Decent diversity of shot shapes considering its mostly open design.
-Usually not too busy.
-OK use of numbers and Arrows to direct you to the next tee (considering there isn't any detailed signs here)

Cons:

-Some holes have been forced into the old layout in order to get this course up to 20 holes. There are 2 holes that are so short that you could jump putt them.
-Some Tee-pads could find themselves under fire from other holes.
-Lacking proper signage, i could see myself frustrated if i were coming here for the first time. (i actually witnessed a group today playing from 5's tee to 6's basket, and moving straight on to 7. Also, there are other holes i could see people accidentally skipping if they were new here.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I do enjoy this course. It has its problems with signage, and can be frustrating for groups new to the area. Despite this, i find myself stopping here on my way home from work because it's a pretty good design, and forces a number of different shot shapes. Also a good course for anyone playing solo, because its pretty hard to throw a shot that isn't immediately findable by yourself in the matter of seconds. I do feel like some holes don't need to be here, but i guess you could circumvent them and play the old layout if you just skip them and tee off from the old tee's. It has a nice diversity of open long drives, shorter mid/putter/fairway-driver finesse drives, and roller opportunities. I have yet to come here and found myself waiting, there are usually no more than a handful of groups here, and most have been good about letting faster groups play through.

Short Beginner Friendly Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- A good variety of shot types
- Rubber tee pads for longs are ok as long as they aren't wet.
- Next tee arrows on trees & White markers for each hole made navigation easy (although I did check the map a few times my first time through)
- Park is nice & clean and well maintained.
- Bathrooms on site
- Very few chances to lose a disc

Cons:

- Short tees are listed, but I couldn't find them. There are a few that are apparently the same as the longs but I only find ONE short tee (hole 4 I think) and I spent ~5 mins looking for the short tee on holes 1&2 with no luck. Why even list short tees if they aren't marked. Would be much nicer to bring the wife / kid along if the short tees were easy to locate.
- Tee signs would be nice.
- Some safety concerns with crossing fairways and a few holes packed in VERY tight. For example hole 4 & 5 are at 90* from each other with 4 ending just inside the tree line. Hole 5's tee is ~50' to the right of the fairway (looking at the pin) and throws completely across it down the tree line. This crosses fairways and has your drive from 5 going right over the short side of the circle for 4. Not sure what they were thinking here trying to get in a little extra length. Another fun one is hole 14's teepad & hole 18. When throwing a FH line for 18 I watched my drive go RIGHT over the teepad for 14 and fade back to the pin. There is no way I'd throw a drive from either of those if another group was on the respective hole (I won't tee from 5 if anyone is approaching 4 nor throw from 18 if anyone is on the 14 teebox). There are a few others that are closer than comfortable but they aren't as bad as those 2.
- On the short side - especially the back 9

Other Thoughts:

Overall a typical park course that does a decent job of making some interesting holes & approaches, just keep in mind par is very generous here. Lots of ace runs and you will use a good variety of shots. I can't get past the safety issues and there are many other (better) courses that I'd rather be at in the area.

nice to play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 4, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

nice short course that lets you experience open holes and some challenging low shots under trees fun to play with a midrange for practice or try new things

Cons:

confusing tee locations and baskets. no good signage just numbers on trees. missing tee pads on a few holes don't remember what ones. the tee at number 5 is located too close to the hole 4 basket within 30 ft

Other Thoughts:

needs improved signs this would greatly improve the flow of the course great potential

Great course for beginners and practicing you drives! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Can be played very quickly. Two people can play in about an hour
- Some nice wide open holes to really fling your discs on
- Not many chances to lose discs
- Lots of short holes for ace opportunities
- Despite pretty wide open holes there are enough trees so that some control is involved. Most shots even if their bad wont kill you.
- Good confidence builder
- Multiple tees pretty well marked in ground, but not necessary because course is so short
- Pretty fun for a park course
- Bathrooms open during summer near parking lot

Cons:

- It can be difficult to navigate if you haven't played before
- Some tee markers (on the tees or on the trees) and some baskets may be wrong because of recent course redesign
- No good signs with description of hole and some flypads may be missing at some holes.
- Sometimes town soccer can cut awfully near to the course
- Some discrepancy between where the tees
are at some holes because of redesign
- Not difficult enough to be a pro-level course

Other Thoughts:

This is a very good course to bring beginners to because of the low frustration level and very minimal chance of losing discs. It is also is fun for average players and good players who don't mind a quick relaxing round of golf. Once the tee issues are fixed along with maybe some good signs this is definitely a 3 course.

Good for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of trees to force a variety of shots. New rubber tee pads installed. Not crowded.

Cons:

Not easy to navigate first time out. Some tee pads seem to have been moved from different holes, so the yardage is incorrect.

Other Thoughts:

Great for those without long drives. Play it as a par 3.

Holes are a challenge, pars are not. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Some deceptively fun holes in a nice park.

Cons:

No teepads, holes are only marked with small colored plaques on the ground. Can make it a challenge the first time navigating. The natural tees are in fairly decent shape, however.

Pars are REALLY easy. There's a par 5 on a 250-300 ft hole. I've double eagled it, and shouldn't be able to.

Other Thoughts:

When we first pulled into the parking lot we all groaned. Wide open field with baskets. Great. Playing the course, however swayed us and made it worth a trip back. There's little to no elevation changes, but the course designer did a great jog of working with the obstacles he had. There always seems to be a tree where you want to throw, but there's always a path to be found... Often a fairly challenging and rewarding shot. Play it as par 3's, however to challenge you scorecard.

Worth a trip: If you're in the area playing another course, you could throw a quick and rewarding round here, but I wouldn't make the trip for this course alone.

Simple but good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well mowed, baskets are in great shape (especially since they're rather old) Bunch of old growth trees placed directly in your way.

Cons:

Rather easy course...Someone called it Ellison without the hill, and the trees spread out across the entire course. Point taken.

If you're looking for a tournament caliber course, this isn't it.

Tees are marked on the ground and on some trees, can be hard to find and the back and forth layout is a bit strange at first.

a very few of the baskets have been placed in the wrong slots...and they're all right near eachother making it really confusing...bring a map.

Other Thoughts:

If you're not a snob and you don't need cement pads and luxuries and a perfect layout, then you'll make some fun on this course.

I enjoy it, I'd play it, and I'd be glad to have it in my hometown...but as it stands it's one of the farther away courses in the area and simply doesn't have as much to offer as Parma and Basil...or even MCC.

But this course has no deal breaker type flaws. If you're looking for some place else to play, or you're passing through...stop by and play.

If you're in the area for a short time and want to play some courses...hit up Parma/Basil/MCC/Widener/Ellison instead.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

variety of hole types from long and wide open to short and technical.

a number of ace-run holes keep playing here exciting.

very little places to lose plastic.

multiple hole placements throughout the year mix it up periodically.

pretty open throughout most of the course really gives you a chance to open up and sling some long drives.

pretty no-nonsense layout make it great for practice, a misplaced drive isn't going to kill your score here.

Cons:

seasonal, baskets are only in from april to november. would be a great course for winter play.

typically windy, great for drives but sometimes it can really effect your up-game.

parts of the course can be wet until about mid-july.

difficult to navigave unless you've been here before, tees are plates on the ground, some of them have trees with numbers by them. be sure to bring a map your first time here, or email me, i'm listed as a guide.

Other Thoughts:

this course is typically not very busy. its a really nice course to just go and throw for the sake of throwing. other than that, its not much to write home about. kind of a forgotten course of the rochester area, definitely not one of the more popular ones but still enjoyable. lots of chances for aces here, fun to play a second round at after playing weidner park.

Nice small local course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice small course in a local park. Mixture of open and wooded holes. Easy for a beginner or someone looking for quick practice. Good variety of holes. Not usually many people playing.

Cons:

Course is fairly short. Tees can be hard to locate if you don't know where they are, some of them are marked with square plate on ground. No real signs, just a few numbers on some trees. Can get a little muddy when wet.

Other Thoughts:

This is the course I learned on and still play regularly cause it's close to work. Despite how short it is, I really like this course because of the different hole configurations it offers. This course was laid out very well for the compact design. Not usually many people playing so you can go as fast or as slow as you want. If they ever put signs and teepads in I'd give it a 4.

Not too difficult, a nice course layout.

Cons:

Not remarkable or too memorable. It was soggy in spot, so bring waterproof shoes. It was mildly entertaining, but kind-of ho-hum/boring.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't make a special trip back just to play there, but would play again, if I happen to every find myself in Churchville again...

short, easy course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

good mix of open fairways and progressively more trees and obstacles as you go through the course. some of the trees, etc make for interesting holes. nice, clean park with bathroom facilities and a playground (if you're bringing the family).

Cons:

-very short. it's a real birdie fest here. there are only a couple longer holes.
-very difficult to navigate. i would have been walking around looking for the next tee for hours if i hadn't brought a map. no signs and the tee markers are even with the ground and sometimes hidden by grass.
-since there are no signs and the holes are short, it's tough to tell which basket you should be playing to at times. some of them are fairly close to tell without a map.

Other Thoughts:

relatively decent course but it really suffers from lack of signage and the monotony of the geography on which the course is located. river and trees add some interest but not really enough.
given the other great courses around rochester, there's little reason to drive all the way out to churchville just to play this course. if you must, play it once just to see and then head back to baker, parma, basil marella and ellison park.

Easy Play, tough navigation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful, very clean park to play in. Lots of birdie holes here. Nice use of mature trees and stream on front nine. Back nine is a lot tighter with more trees.

Cons:

Not very well marked tee boxes. Metal plates sit flush with ground and no signs to let you know where the hole goes.

Other Thoughts:

Very short course. Only one really long hole, #4 i think, to let your arm loose. #15 is was just kind of crammed in and is not a very fun hole. There are a bunch of good holes here though so give it a try.

Walk in the park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Fairly open, park setting. Possible for relative newbies to get respectable score, but can be deceptively challenging including lots of trees (force accuracy or luck) and a stream or roads that can come into play.

Cons:

Trees are frustrating. No signage nor maps available. Tees marked by metal plaques on ground, distances written on some very doubtful. Some poison ivy in/around woods and also on park trees.

Other Thoughts:

Fortunately there were plenty of arrows spray painted on the lawn to lead me from the basket to the next tee. New pin placements on a few, including #5 which is now closer to road (be careful lefties & right sidearms). I wasn't always sure which target was correct, especially #17 - can't see basket from tee, tee faces #18. Spotter might help on tee shot out of woods when basket out of sight (at least for inconsistent tossers like me).

Always Windy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Pars can be made even by us not-so-good players. Like the mix of open field (1-5) and progressively tree filled fields (6-14) only true woods hole is the short 15.

Cons:

Hardly any elevation changes. I've played it 1/2 dozen or so times and seems to be always windy which wreks havoc on my forehand drive. Course quite soggy still in the beginning of May

Other Thoughts:

Agree with other reviewers - tough to find tees if you don't know the course. Tee pads or sign posts would be helpful.

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

18 hole course, All flat, front 9 holes are not bad, last 9 seemed to be forced in because of lack of space. Over all the course is short, I believe at one span you play 4 holes in a row all under 200 feet. Good course for beginners, experienced players may get bored. I like going here for a relaxing care free round and I like to take new players here who are just starting out. I took a new player to 4 courses in the Rochester area and he liked this one the best.

There are long PIN positions which make this course much better overall. Pin positions change every so often.

Could have been great 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 2, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is very easy, especially the front 9. good variety for such a small area.
It would take very little effort to turn this course in to a 4 out of 5.

Cons:

Finding the tees takes longer than playing the holes. The excitement of hitting birdie after birdie is destroyed by the frustration of not being able to find the pins. After awhile you felt like making up tees just so you could keep up momentum.

Other Thoughts:

If this course was labled with above ground pegs it would have been a 3.5
Signage would have made it a 4.0
I would have settled for spray paint saying "next pin this way"

Nice beginner course in a great park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Located right on Main Street in a great small town park. The shorter holes in the latter portion of the course cater to beginners who can't drive for distance, but there is enough tree coverage here to keep it from getting too simple.

Cons:

My first time through I found it took less time to play a hole than to find the next tee, as the only markers are flush with the ground (with white being longer than blue). The first few holes are rather open and uninteresting, with Main Street a little too close for comfort.

Other Thoughts:

I'd classify most of the holes as "pitch and putt". But this actually made it rather enjoyable for me. It was a good place to wind down after getting beat up by the nearby Baker Farm course earlier in the day.

Open course in a park setting 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Well maintained, multiple pin placements.

Cons:

A lot of shorter holes

Other Thoughts:

Churchville is definitely an enjoyable course but it's nothing extraordinary. Most holes play in relatively open fields with no weeds/rough in sight so if you want to practice your drives, come here. The creek comes into play on #5 (at least on a bad shot) but otherwise there aren't any holes where you need to worry about losing a disc.

Like Jim said, this is a great course for beginners or intermediate players but for anyone looking for a really challenging course Churchville probably won't be on your radar. That said, it's still fun to play, especially if you like to "grip it and rip it" without worrying about losing a disc :)
