Disc golf in a tiny park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Parc Stagni is a really nice little plot of land just outside of Geneva with a lot of really neat mature trees. The park is easily accessible by public transit (just take the 12 Tram) so if you're in Geneva without a car it's really easy to get there. The Innova baskets are in decent shape, though some are a bit wobbly. The tees are flat with well defined fault lines and each tee shows the tee number, par and distance. There's a map at the beginning of the course. The grass is kept well for the most part and all baskets are easy to see from the tee.

I've got to hand it to the course designers here because there are some really nice holes here in a very small amount of space. The first hole is an island hole with probably a 10 meter radius that one must land in from the tee. Hole 2 throws through an hexagonal door-opening in the stone wall leading into the back area of the park. Hole 3 throws over a small rise in the landscape halfway down the fairway. A couple holes use an elevated basket and a small pond (or is it a large puddle?) is in play on 3 holes. Hole 6 is a super short 20m ace run, but it's not a gimme. With the pond on the left of the basket and low tree boughs on the right, the basket is well protected and despite it's short distance, this is not an easy ace. There's a nice mix of straight aways, hyzers and anhyzers and the large trees, OB pond and other marked OB's make these mostly short holes fairly challenging.

Cons:

The biggest con here is that the fairways cross everywhere. With 5 baskets and 12 tees, this is an inevitable problem. When I played here, I was the only one on the course so this wasn't a big deal, but with other players playing at the same time, this could be a real problem. Being aware of your surroundings here is paramount because there are many walking paths and park benches in play. Wild shots simply just can't be allowed to happen here. And if the park is particularly crowded, play may be nearly impossible here. There simply just is not much space.

The other major con here is that this park seems to be a spot mostly for teenagers to come and smoke. One kid picked up my disc from the lie and was about to throw it back to me and I had to explain to him the basics of disc golf (in French). So the scene here is a little undesirable unless we establish a rule that hitting a stoner scores an ace... just kidding.

Also, a couple minor things: tee pads are tiny, some trash in the park, and some holes could be a little longer.

Other Thoughts:

If you are going to play one course in Geneva, do yourself a favor and pass on this one and go to Les Evaux. If you can play both in the area, this one is worth seeking out, but it is certainly not without its problems. Try to go play here on an off-hour (during the day on a weekday maybe) and hopefully you won't have too much trouble getting your throws off. And for those who live in Geneva, this is a nice change of pace to have nearby, within the service area of public transit for when you need to change things up. Really not a bad course at all but the crossing fairways make this course a strong 1.5 to a light 2. I'll play it a couple more times probably and change the rating if I see fit.
