Homemade baskets............... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some holes were decent.
This course led me to find out about DGCoursereview.com (See "Other Thoughts")

Cons:

Homemade baskets just ruin the whole experience.
Most hole layouts were just bad.

Other Thoughts:

This was one of first courses I played and made me wonder how many other courses had homemade baskets. Luckily this is the only course that I've played with homemade baskets since. Ever since then I started looking online before I even consider playing a new course, especially if it is pretty far from home.

DIY--but not enough TLC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is located not too far from the NJ shore, but unfortunately there's not much nice to say about this course. Fairways are fairly tight on a lot of holes, but still very parable.

- Would make a nice pitch-and-putt, I guess.

Cons:

- Pars are out of whack. No hole, IMO, should be above a par 3.

- Baskets are homemade and completely wrecked/smashed/falling apart. The bottom of the entrapment devices are lined with this weird elastic, so I had two putts literally bounce out of the basket.

- Fairways cross on some holes, but it looks like the park wasn't utilized by people much.

- Despite some signs, navigation is really terrible. I never did find a few of the holes despite looking for a pretty long time. I felt like I did ten laps around the park just looking for the first tee.

- No tee pads to speak of and baskets aren't numbered.

- Unless I royally screwed up at finding holes, only 5 baskets remain. I'm guessing that they're deteriorating and removed by the city.

Other Thoughts:

I really try to be forgiving and constructive when I review courses, but it's hard to say much about this course. It's quite simply incomplete in the number of holes it has; navigation is a bear; and the baskets are just not engineered to last or catch discs very well. People who design courses should have to play a round here so they know what NOT to do when they make a course. Do yourself a favor and go north and play a round at Rutgers.

RamsFan1's review is spot on 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some of the hole layouts are actually quite good taken on their own terms. Hole 2 is a quite pretty downhill dogleg. It is the only course for miles around.

Cons:

In addition to everything RamsFan1 pointed out, too many of the holes cross walking paths or active roads with cars. Hole 5 has you shooting through a swingset. Hole 4 will have RHBH throwers fading into a tennis court fence, or onto the court OB. Hole 1 is over a picnic area. It is quite a dangerous course. And yes the baskets are absolutely atrocious.

Other Thoughts:

Every Boy Scout course I've played has been terrible. I am really becoming biased against that organization.

Well-intentioned but disappointing 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are 2 x 6 posts at each hole with hole number, par, distance and flight path. "Next hole" signs are present in several areas of the course. Hole distances are reasonable. Two or three of the holes are decent. Park is pretty clean and has amenities like porta potties and picnic areas.

Cons:

Baskets- the single most important element of any decent disc golf course- are of extremely poor quality, having been put together on the cheap. They are also not numbered. There are no tee pads to speak of. Navigation is a bit tricky despite the signage. Several holes on the back end not really designed well and have no real flight path to the basket. The disc flight paths of holes 1 and 9 intersect, creating the possibility of getting beaned by a disc if holes are being played simultaneously.

Other Thoughts:

This course was brought to my attention through word of mouth as being a boy scout project. Since it's only 15 minutes from my house, I decided to check it out. While I respect the efforts of anyone attempting to put in a course and expand the sport and feel terrible bad mouthing a scout project, I must nonetheless speak honestly about Pine Park, which is very poorly conceived.

Of the flaws- of which there are many- by far the biggest is the hand-made baskets, which are among the worst I've seen on any course. The poles and chains are passable, but plastic edging one uses for landscaping serves as both the ring around the top of the basket and the rim of the catch basket. Threaded string (yes, you read this right) is woven in a criss-cross pattern and serves as the bottom of the basket. As a result, your disc can drop through the bottom. They are not level and are already coming apart despite being almost new. You really have to see these things to believe how bad they are, and it took the enjoyment out of playing in about 5 minutes.

Pine Park is not really worth a visit. I guess kids might have a little fun with it, but as it stands not even recreational players will like it here- at least until the baskets are addressed. As this is supposedly a "labor of love", I'll give it a "1", but that is being charitable.
