Schooled by Sierra

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The first course I hit on vacation was Sierra College, it turned out to be the toughest. A challenging course, it's thickly wooded and has a lot of elevation change. Dual tee pads that are nicely built and leveled boxes floored with rubber mats. The tee signs are pretty good, and a marker indicates which pin location is in play. The par I played was 58 overall, with four par 4 holes. Versatility is great between the dual tees and multiple pin location possibilities.

The lines are tough right out of the gate. Hole 1 is uphill and gives you a taste of the crowded fairways. Usually there is a line through the trees, maybe more than one, but they require a high degree of precision.
Hole 2 is downhill, and depending on where the basket is set, it can be tough to spot. Boulders also sit among the trees on this fairway. Hole 5 is the first big downhill, and probably the most open, although the basket is set in a position that is well protected by tall trees. Getting the correct angle as you hit the landing zone is a big help.

There are not really any bad holes. Birdies are earned. Pressure to make solid drives and approach shots, and a few recoveries is constant. The layout I went through didn't have a lot of easy or short pins, and if there was one, I would watch a tee shot that felt great tap out on a tree trunk at the last minute.

9 was my favorite shot of the day. It is an elevated pad, with a straight shot down the hill to the basket. My Roc 3 held the line through the thin mountain air all the way. The putt was out of my confidence range, but I did get it in the basket for a birdie. 11 is an uphill shot, with a well defined fairway that I also managed to park for another birdie. Those were the only two I bagged all day. I also really liked hole 12. This tee is also elevated, and fairly open until you drop down the hill and out of sight. The blind shot to the basket is fun, and the pin position was in a tricky spot where overshooting or taking a bad roll is very possible.

Cons:

Even from the short tees, this course is pretty tough. It isn't exactly beginner friendly. There were a few blind tee shots, and even with the pin indicator and tee signs I was guessing a lot on where to place my drives. This could have been solved by walking the hole to see what I am going for, but I don't want to test the patience of my sweet lady too much.

Even the baskets that were in sight could be tough to spot sometimes. Maybe a bright flag topper here and there would be nice. Signage to get from hole to hole could be handy in a couple of spots as well, but I did have a map on the phone that helped me through it all.

Other Thoughts:

This was the hardest course out of the four that I played around Lake Tahoe. My second favorite after Zephyr Cove. I will have to take another trip to get in the rest of my wishlist for that area, and revisit a course or two. Sierra would totally be worth a second visit.

It totally kicked me in the rear. I was 13 over par with 2 birdies, 6 pars, 5 bogies and 4 double bogies. I missed some drives, took some bad bounces, couldn't get out of trouble when I needed to. It is difficult for me, I'd like to see what the pros could do here. Championship level is a label I am tempted to put on Sierra College DGC. I will let you judge for yourself.

Super fun, solidly difficult course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun, fun, fun. Lots of elevation, nearly every hole. Alternate pads now on every hole, multiple pin placements, beautiful forest, large trees, some wildlife, not too much difficulty finding errant throws. Great baskets. Some par 4's, with certain placements, not crowded

Cons:

Some-what tiring to walk the course, tho this is both positive and negative. No smoking/alcohol. No garbage bins. I-80 right under the course can be irritating. Hard to criticize this course, barely outta the heart of Truckee, a real gem

Other Thoughts:

Much love and gratitude to the builders, maintainers protectors of our beloved courses and sport!

Thanks to Craig Getty for the tour. I enjoyed the round.

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- good flat rubber tee pads
- good tee signs that offer all the info you need
- multiple baskets placements
- great use of elevation, makes for some real "wow throws"
- good variety of distances
- lots of different technical throws
- beautiful scenery
- very accessible, right off 80

Cons:

- navigation can be a little frustrating on a few holes
- some of the blind holes make finding your discs difficult, there's a bit of under brush on a few holes as well.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course, one of the best in the Tahoe area. But with just a little improvement to the navigation, this course could easily be a 4.5.

This is a destination course. Do not hesitate to stop and play...right off the interstate. Well laid out course that generally felt big for 18 holes. I like the grip mats.

Cons:

A little loud on holes 14,15,16.

A hidden gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Sierra College is another excellent example of Tahoe disc golf and the design of Craig Getty. The original design was amazing and provided quite a challenge for every level of player. The new positions make this course even better! Varied terrain, distances, shot selection and natural environment make this one of the best courses in the region. If you are in the area please do yourself a favor and play here. That is if you like a challenge!

Cons:

There is a parking fee of $3 and the lot is closed on Sundays. However there is close parking at the gate or across the street if is required. Just think of it as a warm up if these things are an issue.

Other Thoughts:

You may find yourself one of the only ones playing so do not expect to join a group if you are unfamiliar with the layout. Signage is complete and trails are pretty easy to follow. Truckee Disc Golf Association is a good resource.

Amazing course w/full signage and multiple pin placements! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is a beast! Amazing layout w/out the crowd. Multiple pin positions are now clearly marked on the signs (even the big holes are viewable from the pad) w/accurate distance and the location of the next tee pad. The fairways are fair if you have the shot the hole calls for. The course can be set relatively short or incredibly long; most of the time it seems to be a mix.

Cons:

Some of the newer pin placements are still a bit rough but are slowly getting beat in. Pay for parking on weekdays and walk up on weekends, I park off the road in the gated area at the bottom. None of these are a true con, just FYI. The only true bummer is having to leave the dogs at home (weekdays), because its a college campus I understand...I remember how many dog attacks I had to fight off and poop landmines I stepped in when I was in college at a "dog friendly" campus....ohh the humanity! Either way, it is what it is.

Other Thoughts:

Bring water. Like all Tahoe courses, pack it in/pack it out and high fire danger so be extra careful with any spark.

Trees,Trees, all the trees 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent course layout/design.

SOOOO many trees to hit. I hit at least one or more trees on each hole. That increased my score overall.

Cons:

Course lay out is a bit tough for a first timer. I spent some time locating each tee pad/hole. There are alternate hole locations/pin placement for some, but not all holes.

Other Thoughts:

Tee pad for hole one is behind pr south of Sierra College building. Practice basket is west of the first parking lot you come to after passing through the gate which is not near the tee pad for hole one.

Free parking at shopping center to the west of the main entrance.

Beautiful but confusing hike 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful wooded course with elevation changes and a variety of hole layouts. Area looks mostly clean, no pets means no dumps and chipmunks stay around. Tees are all maintained and nice. Easy to find and start from near the parking lot.

Free if you're willing to walk from the nearby shopping center parking lot.

Cons:

The hole maps are quite vague, artistic impressions rather than accurate guides. Lots of unused footings around the area made me think there were alternate hole locations, but no maps showed multiple locations. No direction signs between holes, so I got lost almost every hole (there was no one else there). Lots of the holes were densely surrounded by bushes, i got lots of scratches trying to get to the holes (some lacked any sense of a fairway at all).

Other Thoughts:

I am an athletic beginner and love the sport. I definitely felt beat by this course, I would not recommend it for other beginners, especially alone. Despite the beauty, I was very frustrated by the end trying to find each hole. Going with crowds or guides strongly recommended.

I would think advanced players would love this course. My discs are wrecked from all the dense trees I kept hitting.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is complete with 3 to 4 new pin placements. Tee signs have been updated. Excellent diversity of holes. Up and down, long and short. It plays as a par 54 to a par 61. Lots of tight windows with many trees. Rubber tee pads are in great shape. The course is very clean and not crowded.

Cons:

Access is a pro and con. The gate at the entrance is closed in off hours. So a walk up the road (3 minutes up hill) on weekends is necessary. This keeps the course free of riff-raff.

Other Thoughts:

This course is tucked in on a hillside between Hwy 80 and the railroad tracks. You would think that it would be noisy.. but it is very peaceful. The gate is open from 9:00 to 6:30 Monday to Thursday, and closes at 4:00 on Friday. There is a $3 parking fee.

An Unpolished Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Variety - pretty much every hole can test different aspects of your game
Location - right off I-80 and in the Sierras, the course itself is beautiful

Cons:

Only one pin position per hole, however, this will be changed soon. Plans are underway to add other pins to the course, which would raise my review from a 4.5 to a 5.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my local courses, so I have the opportunity to play here very often. That being said, the course remains as challenging as ever and never really loses any of its draw. Being somewhere between an Advanced and Intermediate player, I find myself challenged on almost every hole, with 58 feeling like a good score for the round. I mix in a few birdies with a few bogies, but it is a great place to hone my skills. The changes in elevation are great and the course requires a lot of shot variety in order to shoot well. There are a number of par 3s that feel more like par 4s due to their difficulty. The only thing the course could benefit from is additional pin placements, but I have been told that those are coming soon. Easily one of the best courses in the Lake Tahoe area.

~Map from DGCR was great.
~Logs marking trails to next t-pad very helpful.
~Signs with pars and distance.
~Very good rubber pads.
~Very quite. We played mid afternoon and did not see or hear anyone else. WOW!!
~Very easy to find course since it's AT the college. Map from this web site shows you first pad.
~Beautiful views from hole 12.

Cons:

~No trash cans.
~No benches.
~Road noise on some holes from I80.
None of these are a big deal to me.

Other Thoughts:

If you count the course across the lake, there are almost too many choices for disc golf up here. All of the ones I've played so far are at least 3 1/2's. The locals have to be very spoiled. I'm looking forward to coming up to play this course again.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

High quality of shots from the tee with a nice variety of left to right, right to left, up and down, short and long drives. As far as course designs go it's probably the best layout in Tahoe. Never very busy. Nice scenery and views (walk back from hole 12's tee box for a really nice vista point)

Cons:

Pay to park. Possibly trouble finding the first tee (just up the hill behind the school building).

Other Thoughts:

Course par is 58 (four par 4's) and it basically has only one layout. I appreciate this aspect because on such a challenging course you pretty much always want another shot at it.

Must play if in the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of relatively easy holes, if you can avoid the trees, and more challenging holes.
Good signage.
Nice rubber tee pads.
Mach 3 baskets.
Nice view from 12th tee.
Interesting and varied terrain.
There appears to be ongoing work on the course, improving paths and cleaning up tree debris.
Only heard one other group playing.

Cons:

A little hard to navigate the first time through, but there's good 4G signal and access to the course map at DGCR helped.
Terrain may be difficult for some to manage.
The gates are often locked (I rode a bike in from a nearby campground).
No dogs (can also be a plus).

Other Thoughts:

If you like the Sierras and playing in varied terrain through lots of trees, this is a great course. Trash cans would be nice, but there may not be a maintenance crew, yet. Please, if you pack it in, pack it out.
The conditions were ideal when I played, cool and damp after a bit of rain. This is just one of the many great courses in the Tahoe area. It complements Truckee Regional DGC nicely, play both.

1st Round of 2014 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course, many very difficult shots, excellent variety of looks. I liked the elevation changes. The signs were great, I could see the baskets from most of the tee pads, and it wasn't very hard to find the ones you couldn't see with a short walk.

Cons:

There was snow on the ground and it made your disc skip way further than I intended, I found a place to park on the backside by the train tracks and it was a little bit of a walk to hole 15 where we started. In some places there were so many trees, I couldn't find a lane.

Other Thoughts:

My son shot a better round than me on this course when we played, but his backhand style played better than my forehand flick style. Great views from 12 tee pad. I should have had 2 birdies, but missed 20 foot putts. The pads were icy and I slipped as I threw on 2 pads. I want to come back in the summer and try it again.

Cons:

Huff! Puff! Sierra College Mountain Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course sits behind the main building at Sierra College. I understand it's only there on an trial basis which is the reason for no concrete teepads yet. The course has brand new out of the box DGA baskets with the numbers on top. There are rubber mats which are well done. I started out fine following the course for the first few holes. I have to agree 100% with the previous reviewer "Lonhart" and his opening sentence. I too, found it hard to like this course but I do think it is very worthy.
When I got to the bottom of the hill and looked up at # 3 and it's probably 285'-300' uphill through a thick line of trees, I knew then this course was not for me. Then # 4 is probably 450' with a dogleg to the right through some tight openings. It wasn't a hole I wanted to throw playing by myself.

Then I found # 5 and it's a classic downhill (maybe 275") to a visible basket straight down in the trees below. Just a really great disc golf hole. Unfortunately, some of my excitement of playing this hole, was tempered slightly by finding piles of debris (old tarps and such) lying about down near the # 5 basket. This must be remnants of the homeless folks one reviewers referred to. From here on out for me, it was just kind of a constant struggle finding teepads, figuring out which basket I was throwing to, walking ahead to read numbers on the baskets.
#12 is a pretty cool spot for a teepad. It sits up in the rocks with a lovely view of the surrounds. Unfortunately, you're teeing off into a total abyss, throwing blind over a ledge with no knowledge of the distance or basket location. Without a spotter of two, I chose to pass on this hole. After giving up on the # 12 teeoff and walking off to hunt for # 13, I found the # 12 basket. It was just over the ledge, kind of a feathery touch shot. By then, I was in no mood to hike back up and tee it off. Too bad for me because it lokked like a great little throw.
And that's kind of how it went for the rest of my round. I would find a teepad and have not a clue whether the basket was north or south. I never did find the # 18 tee and I hunted for quite sometime.

Cons:

There were no signs. I found navigation to be extremely difficult, frustrating and exhausting. The course is physically demanding to begin with and adding an extra hike before each tee off didn't help matters.
The course only seems to be open when school is in session. Are you welcome to walk in when the gate is closed? I didn't pay to park. Didn't know I was required to. But there is a Park To Park machine in front of the building.

Other Thoughts:

I can see the merits of this course. The challenge is there, both physically and golf wise. Personally, I like my courses to be a little more user friendly, with benches, water, signs, less mountain goat like climbs, more friendly lines to the baskets. You, however, may be up for the challenge of this course. I say, Go for It!

Impure shots punished with extreme prejudice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

In general, I found it hard to like this course, but I do think it is very worthy.
--Very challenging
--Mix of RHBH and forehand shots, but mostly throw it very straight
--Rubber tee pads, which I usually dislike, were very well done and sturdy
--In a few cases (#2, 4) there are at least two routes to attack the pin
--Flow is generally what you might intuit
--Played it twice, never saw another soul
--Very scenic, not trampled yet

Cons:

The college was closed for the summer, I think, and the gate was closed and locked. Pay for parking signs everywhere now, and a machine to buy your parking permit is in the main parking lot.
--No tee signs
--Several holes with no view of the pin, and a few requiring extensive walk to see them, but once you know, it's not an issue
--No amenities on the course (benches, trash cans)
--Pay for parking when college is in session, I assume
--No 'Disc Golf' welcome board at hole 1, which is common to many courses
--No maps on site
--Holes 6 and 7 are not very good due to the insane number of trees, which requires pin-point accuracy. I don't mind that on short shots, or for part of the fairway, but doing it for 500+ feet is silly
--Footing is often awkward due to slope, but that adds to the challenge, I guess
--You sort of end near the start

Other Thoughts:

I think this course would be better with a little tree trimming on some holes. I dislike the 'hope and poke' routine that is used on multiple holes. I was thoroughly disheartened on multiple holes when a slight nick of one tree sent my shot careening down the slope and into a nightmare of shrubs and trees. If you have absolute control, this is not an issue, but for me it detracted from the fun of the course.

When you get to the course, the first parking lot on your right is nearest hole 1, which is just behind the main building at the edge of the forest.

- excellent, fair design that made the best use of the available land
- challenging for even top pros, but with some great birdie holes.
- nice balance of right and left turning holes
- some nice views
- an active club that seems psyched to take this course to the next level of maintenance

Cons:

- a little highway noise since I-80 is very close
- lack of water in play

Other Thoughts:

Wow, what a nice surprise! A par 57-58 course right in truckee! This course will bring the best or worst out of you, often in the same round because of the mix of trees and elevation changes. You have to be on to hit your line. I happened to play it ok the first time, getting 3s on two of the three par 4s. There are epic ace runs here too, and butt clenching windows you have to hit to be competitive. I can only see this course getting rated higher as amenities like signage go into the ground. It should have a nice player base being in Truckee with the accessibility from the bay area, sacramento, auburn, and reno. Get out and play this thing! I happened to like it better than vista and would rate it close to Zephyr (Zephyr has better views, but it doesn't have three par 4s!). Turtle Rock is still the king of Tahoe courses, but Sierra College is far easier to get to for most people!
