Great course for intermediate player and first time in the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is my first time playing in the Austin area and new courses often are challenging to navigate; this was not the case at North Town. From most of the baskets I could see the next tee box, plus there is a very good map at the first tee.
The course offers a good variety of holes, both short and long, wooded and open, and a few with OB and casual water along the edges.
The first tee is easily found next to the parking lot and restrooms, and 18 basket returns to the same location.

Cons:

Possibly the "venomous snakes" are a con, but only if venturing into the areas marked as such. Only a very errant shot would have this issue.

Other Thoughts:

A great course for both beginners and intermediate players, I'll definitely play it again when in the area.

Fun course, needs clarity 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course map was accurate for the back nine
- Variety of open and wooded shots
- Tee signs on every hole
- Concrete tee pads with good runway length
- Huge open field near the first hole, perfect for field work like driving and shot practice
- Practice basket near the first tee
- Plenty of parking
- Actual restrooms
- Very shady
- All the holes, except 11 and 12, begin and end near each other

Cons:

- Course map was severely outdated for the front nine, make sure you follow the tee signs instead
- Hole 13 is dangerously close to the road, beginners could easily throw into the street, which is thankfully just a low-traffic neighborhood road
- Without the course map, finding out how to get to 12 from 11 is super unintuitive
- It's hard to see the basket from the tee for most of the front 9, with 9 being the worst of the bunch
- No hole numbers on the baskets

Other Thoughts:

The course has a big dog park on it. If you have a partner who doesn't play, and a dog, then they could hang out there while you play the course.

Pokemon Go: There are 3 stops and a gym in the parking lot

Solid course with some variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very good concrete tee pads. I require a long runway and they are long.
- Good variety. Open fairways, tight tree-lined holes, long holes, a couple of ponds.
- Longer holes have two tees.
- Restroom facility in parking area

Cons:

- Not much elevation change.
- Not a good job on some risk/reward basket placement. Some holes are too close to an out of bounds creek making one play too conservatively.

Other Thoughts:

Not a must play but a good, solid course.

New Course (2011) With Used Baskets! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

North Town is a new park and proudly wears it's newness. The park has a wonderful, new picnic shelter complete with restrooms and a great kid's play area. The park is green, well manicured and has ample parking and a walking path which circles the park.

The course starts close to the parking lot and has a practice basket. The concrete tee pads are nice sized. The Mach II baskets have been strangely painted yellow? I wonder why would you paint baskets that are only 6 years old? I think they might have been repurposed from another course. Great colored signs give you all the needed information, but why? why does # 2 show the distance in yards (77yards) when the other 17 signs all show the distance in feet?

Hole # 1 starts your round off with a open, 585' bomb. There are three holes on the front nine playing over 500' and # 11 is close at 498'. I appreciate that although this course plays fairly long, there are a couple shorter (under 200') Ace Runs. I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that isn't one signature hole here but rather quite a few really good holes.

# 12 is one of really good holes. It's really a pretty hole playing 201' to the basket on the other side of the pond, so the carry over water is probably 185'. My beginner playing partner insisted on throwing this hole and left his drive just short and landed in the pond. When he stepped into the water to grab his disc, he slipped on the incredibly, slippery mud and splash landed on his behind. Speaking of this mud, I have never seen such gooey, sticky mud before. It sticks to everything including your discs. My boots weighed about 5 pounds each. I'm telling you, this is that red mud of Alabama from "My Cousin Vinny" sticky.

Returning to hole # 12. There is an alternate tee pad on this hole throwing 153' from the side of the pond. I think this throw might be more treacherous due to the three trees waiting to knock your disc into the pond.

There is another pond crossing on # 14. The tee sign says 330'. If you want to play it safe, you can cross throw to the left, reducing the carry to, maybe, 200'. You don't want to fade right because now you're adding to the water carry.

Cons:

The sticky, slippery mud was really annoying both during my round and afterward when attempting to scrape it off my boots. It also made me think about every step I took that even remotely looked muddy. My playing partner, slipped and fell into both ponds. Good for a laugh both times.

The park is almost, totally flat.

After this morning's rains, there were some wet spots. There was virtually a small lake right in front of the # 18 basket.

# 2 sign distance listed in yards?

There is some thick rough bordering some holes.

Other Thoughts:

The creek is all over all over the course. Between it and the walking path which also is present on many holes, the OB will factor into the score of most players. To score well at North Town, players must have a versatile game. You must possess s strong arm, the ability to shape shots, play the technical holes well, keep it low on the tunnel shots and avoid the walkway and creek OB's.

This is an solid, intermediate level course. But rec players can play and enjoy it. It's what I call a comfortable round for us rec guys. The rough is mostly forgiving. You can usually recover from a bad shot. The water carries are easily doable although somewhat scary.

You just have to put up with the slippery, sticky mud if the course is wet.

Other Thoughts:

Medium length course with a challenging front nine and a ton of potential for birdies on the back nine. There are a couple water hazards but they are reasonably avoidable. The pics for this course are super dated and don't do it justice at all. It's a beautiful course and is mostly shaded.

A Good north Austin Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

(3.165 Rating) A good to very good course on Austin's north side.
- UNIQUENESS - Although a flat course, the overall uniqueness is a bit above average for 18 holes. There are a few 4's and a par 5. Several holes have a creek element in play as well as a pond. One good doglegs hole on number 5. In addition, there are some pocket shots, and windows shots. Missing items include a very well defined tunnel play and a substantial dogleg right. I'll also add, there is really no "signature" hole on this course just a bunch of "very good" categorized holes. Some however, may consider number 12 as the signature hole, which is a 200 foot water clear shot.
- SHOT SELECTION - I probably play about half and half flick to backhand on this course. Half of your drives will have to be well thought out and placed. Several of the holes have a creek or pond element in play to force a line.
- CHARACTER - There is a great course map right at hole 1 and there is hole signage throughout the course. About half of the tees are shaded well and there are 2 holes with two tees, 11 and 12. There is a practice basket at 1 and there is a shelter with drinking fountain and restrooms at the parking area. Unfortunately not much in the way of seating and no extra pin placements.
- TEE PADS - Concrete pads are of adequate length and width. Nothing special, but it does the job.
- NAVIGATION - I don't find any major issues although I've probably played it too many times to recall the biggest issues in traversing the course. So take a picture of the map at hole 1 to be safe. There are a few moderate hikes between holes. Holes 1 to 2, 8 to 9 and 11 to 12. There are some directional ques along the routes as well. I'll also mention that the course is good for those that like to bring out the disc golf bag stroller. Although, crossing the creek on 9 can be challenging if the water level is up.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Generally can be played by all skill levels. probably don't want beginners throwing on 12 with the water in play. Pros will probably not find the course difficult enough but advanced and intermediate players should enjoy the course.
- MAINTENANCE - For the most part, every time I've played here the grass has been cut. The park maintenance staff seems to keep it up well.
- SPACING - Above average, Perhaps there are but just a couple times that a disc can fade into another fairway.
- CLUB - Course has a large club and has weekly events. Biggest draw is the Sunday morning random doubles.

Cons:

No major issues with North Town.
- ELEVATION - A surprising lack of Elevation on this course. Its flat as a pancake. Probably varies by no more than 20' on the entire course and no hole varies by more than 10'. definitely subpar among the Austin area courses.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Definitely not the most scenic course in Austin. Probably about average for a north side course. Course is too flat and doesn't really have much in natural features to provide an eye-catching feel. The trees are also to young compared to other area courses. not the worst in the world, just a tad below average.
- DRAINAGE - Course is subject to flooding at times during the rainy season. Course always seems to be the last north side course to dry out. If you need a fix from a north side course that's always dry, check out Brushy Creek aka Cat Hallow.

Other Thoughts:

A good course for those living within 10-15 miles. Definitely worth a look see if you're a south side resident of Austin. Out of area players will need to check out a slew of other area courses before adding this one to your wish list (For instance, Circle C, Williamson, Searight, Bible Ridge, Roy G and East Metro to name a few)

Nice course that goes around a walking path and following a creek with some thickish OB in some spots but also some open holes and a cpl long tight fairways I liked 7 and 18 a lot, also you get to open up right away on hole one with no danger.
-Course map by hole 1 so no navigation problems and tees had distance on them as well but again everything is on the course map too which is awesome
-rough wasn't too bad just longer grass
-good beginner course for sure to learn some shots
-good use of OB with the walkways and creek
-some tough holes that make you think at least from long tee on a cpl holes
-well maintained
-bathrooms and water on site

Cons:

-wasn't the toughest course
-some short filler holes that we're basically par2's
-one of the middle holes 9or10 it was hard to find basket then a good line but it wasn't too bad the fairway there and in some other spots could use cleaning up a bit

Other Thoughts:

I gave the course an 4.0 because restrooms water and well kept course that I believe any level of player would enjoy. I enjoyed the course as an early morning warm up to a harder course that I played but I would say this is one of the nicer and well maintained courses it was good, not a huge mix of shots I was throwing my go to discs on a lot of holes or going over everything but there were some times I had to pull a strange shot out

A Fun City Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I wasn't sure what to expect before I played North Town DGC, but came away pleasantly surprised. The course offers a good variety of open to wooded holes, water carries, creekside basket placements and hole lengths that vary from 180 feet out to 585 feet.

All holes now have concrete tees which appears to be a major improvement based on previous reviews. Each tee also has a simple but useful tee sign. Navigation was pretty simple for most holes as you could see the next tee from the basket. The transitions from Hole 1 to Hole 2 and 11 to 12 aren't obvious, so printing out the map isn't a bad idea.

Hole 1 kicks things off as the longest at 585 feet. Frankly it isn't an inspiring opening hole as it is wide open, though a couple of lines of newly planted trees near the basket will provide obstacles in the future.

But Hole 2 starts a series of wooded holes that require some accurate line shaping and also bring the creek into play. Holes 2, 4, and 5 all require right-finishing drives, so RHBH players better bring a driver that will turn reliably

Hole 8 is the shortest at 180 feet, but you drive over a creek to a basket just about 10' up the opposite bank. Fun little ace run.

Hole 9 is a crazy tight 504 foot par 4. The fairway is narrow with a ton of small trees on either side that will absolutely knock down an errant drive. Almost a poke-and-pray hole, but not quite.

Hole 12 is a short 201 feet (long tee) with virtually all of that a carry over a pond. A shorter alternate tee takes much of the water out of play.

Hole 14 is a longer hole (330 feet) with the most direct route being a long carry over a pond. But you can bail out along the left side at any distance for your drive.

The final four holes bring you back through the woods and require accurate drives to score well.

Cons:

Some of the holes are very tightly wooded, and there will be an element of luck for many players. If you aren't a deadly accurate driver you will be at the mercy of random tree kicks.

The ponds on Holes 12 and 14 look like disc-eaters that could be difficult to recover discs from. But both offer routes that avoid the longer water carries.

I found Hole 1 to be an uninteresting heave over open ground. Holes 13 and 14 are also entirely open, though 13 has a tricky creekside basket placement and 14 has the pond.

A well-used walking trail winds through much of the course, so awareness of other park users is critical to avoid throwing on someone.

Other Thoughts:

Nice big parking lot with restrooms.

The course is one big loop, so don't plan to see your car until you finish all 18 holes.

Fairly good. Still needs some work. 2+ years drive by

Pros:

The course has some really great, wide open spaces that are good for long drives. The trees are maturing nicely, and give additional shade and cover for some approaches. There was a good balance of longer, difficult holes ( hole seven was especially brutal), and shorter holes.

Cons:

It was a pain to navigate. I'll make sure to bring a map next time. I would like to see the baskets marked with their respective number. Also, adding a neon sign or band to the tee marker would make it stand out a little. Some areas were in need of some TLC.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the pads are getting new concrete. Once all of them are done, it'll be much nicer to throw from.

get past the dangerous teepads and you'll have fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A fun round with shots long and short, open and tight, and wet and dry. There are creeks, trees, ponds and mild topography challenges. All kinds of shots are useful here, one of the reasons I like it. The course layout is fun. The long tee on 12 is a signature hole for these parts with a straight over-the-pond shot and very picturesque. Have almost aced it more than once, a fun run indeed. The park has lots of activity and trails, a dog park park, and a pavilion with tables and clean restrooms.

Cons:

The teepads are a nightmare. Already chewed up, rutted, dirt holes, the MUD decided to cap them off with cement by just pouring the mix right onto the teepad, mixing it w the granite gravel already there, resulting in pitted, uneven, crumbling, hazards. You'll have to tee from behind the pad if you want to leave with 2 healthy ankles.

Other Thoughts:

A nice Northern Travis County area course. Come check it out and I bet you'll have a fun time.

Print a map, bring lots of water, and wear cleats 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

North Town has a lot going for it. It's a solid, well-rounded challenge for white to gold level players. There is good variety to the look and feel of the holes and required shots. The power and technical elements are well-balanced and quite a few of the holes require good strategy. There are several multi-shot holes and quite a few of the baskets are located near drop-off's, making for dramatic putting situations.

The course is much prettier now than in the photos on this site. The course is located in the middle of a large subdivision, providing a good place to draw families and new players.

The first hole is easy to find. There's a practice basket and a large field to warm up in adjacent to the first tee.

Highlights include:

Hole 3 presents an interesting risk/reward decision choosing between a tight gap up the middle and throwing something huge over the top of everything, with a drop-off just left of the basket.

Hole 5 is a very difficult par 3 requiring either a tight left to right shot or a monster high flex shot, with the creek running all the way down the right side. It's 2-able, but there will be lots more 4's and 5's than 2's.

Hole 6 is a unique 300 footer uphill that calls for some creativity. There are roller options, laying the disc down early or a sky roller as well as a giant flex shot or overhand crusher.

Hole 7 is a nice 600 footer with an appropriately wide fairway and trouble on both sides.

Hole 9 is a short, tight par 4 which requires good strategy and execution.

Hole 11 is a unique, tight, short par 4/5. The tee shot gives the choice between a tight shot up the gut and a risky play over the top with the creek running down the right side. The second shot is very tight and the basket is perched high up on a knob, making for a dynamic approach and putt situation. (I was stoked to make a beagle 3).

Hole 16 is a short touch shot, requiring a slight left to right to left "S".

Hole 18 is a very challenging par 3 finishing hole. It can be played with a 200 footer and a 160 ft. upshot or being aggressive and going for the deuce.

Cons:

The biggest draw-back that's holding North Town back from receiving a 3.0 or 3.5 is the rutted out dirt tee areas. The course has quite a few full power shots and the tees definitely diminish the quality of the experience.

There are several places which need "next tee" signs as the routing isn't entirely intuitive. PRINT A MAP BEFORE PLAYING.

The first hole is a wide-open 540 ft. tweener across the field. Holes like that are weak anywhere, but especially for the first hole.

The ideal line on hole 4 is a lefty hyzer thrown right over hole 5's tee that fades back right.

Shots thrown on hole 6 can wind up on hole 2 or hole 7's tee.

Hole 8 is thrown directly down the walking trail.

The 9th hole doesn't come back to the parking lot, even though it could.

Other Thoughts:

Please help to keep North Town clean. For info on my review philosophy, check out the other info section on my profile.

Best Course In Pflugerville 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is easily the best one in the Pflugerville area. I liked the set-up overall with a few reservations which I will get to. The course flow will get you around holes 1 through 11 without a map. It is one tee following the last basket you played. I found myself playing lay-up on basket 5 to keep myself from overthrowing the basket and dropping in the creek. The two good ace/deuce holes on this course are 8 and 13, both less than 200 feet each. Watch out for the wind on hole 1, since that hole is mostly open with few trees to dodge. Hole 9 will have you trying to figure out a strategy as to where to throw your disc to try to get less than par 4. No fairway to speak of, unless you like to play ricochet among the trees. Hole 11 is a par 5 which is good, considering the elevated basket. Roll down discs on that hill are guaranteed unless your aim is dead-on. The best challenge holes here are 12 and 14 with their throws across separate ponds. Throw those discs good or they will be lost. These ponds look deep, but like I said, two great strategic holes to play. Hole 13 had the sign which originally said 198 feet, but someone had marked that out and put 162, which seemed closer to the mark. Hole 16 was still kind of muddy even after two solid weeks of dryness due to being in a sheltered tree area. All in all, I found this a good course to play, when dry. Like previous reviewers, though, not a good course to play when wet. Also on hole 7, save your longest throws for the open area. No more than two if you want to at least par that hole. You will definitely need two throws for the woods. I am taking the ricochet factor in again here. Good challenges to be had. Go play and enjoy.

Cons:

Transition from hole 11 to 12 is confusing unless you have a map or meet someone that has played this course before. I had that advantage. Tee boxes are gravel. I do not use a run-up, so this was no problem for me. It could be for some others, though. The tee signs give no indication for the next tee, but does not seem to be a problem until the transition from holes 11 and 12. Unless you are a decent jumper, the creek crossings on hole 9 might be a tough obstacle. Tread lightly on hole 16. There is lots of soft dirt and/or mud even two or more weeks after a rain.

Other Thoughts:

This is an interesting course both in layout and setup. Time and erosion will eventually take its toll here as those factors inevitably do on most courses of this type, but even faster here. I see some holes being abandoned eventually due to the problems that are already arising from flooding and nature factors. It remains to be seen what can and will be done here in the future. Until then, this is a course that is fun and a challenge to play.

Pros:

Another course on the Eastside of Austin / Pflugerville with good baskets.

A longer/tougher course to play near the much shorter Wells Branch course.

Not too tough for beginners, especially the back 9.

Two decent holes to throw over ponds.

Pavilion at parking lot with restrooms for a shady place to relax/eat/rest.

Nice dogpark at entrance.

Update: FINALLY, got cement teepads in 2014!!! (Ratings boost / level up!)

Cons:

They finally got concrete tees, just not designed very well. Still, 100% better than before when they were gravel pits!

The course flow is subpar. It makes more sense to play the first seven holes in this order: 3, 4, 5, 6, 2, 1, 7. Try it sometime, you will like it.

The long tee on #6 is unnecessary. Matter of fact, the teesign is at the short box and it hinders your throw from the long box!

The Par 4 Hole #9 doesn't really have fairways. It has "unfair"ways. Second shot requires a massive thumber or perhaps an anny-bomb if you have a huge arm. It's really just a silly hole that is basically a crapshoot off the tee to your landing zone for the 2nd nonsensical shot in a row. This hole needs at least two bridges to cross the creek, one right after the teepad and one when you get closer to the basket.

The long tee for #11 does not have much of a fairway to shoot for unless you have a massive pro-level throw available over the top of the trees. Playing the hyzer, roller, or gut-shot is a crapshoot...requiring more luck than skill really.

The following issues are mainly after wet conditions:

Since it rains again here in TX, there are a couple of spots you cannot cross the creek without getting yourself crazy muddy or soaked shoes even. No good place to cross after #9 teepad. #15 & #16 get incredibly muddy after wet weather. No good place to cross to the muddy fairway on #16 if you don't throw all the way to the basket on your drive. #17 basket gets surrounded by water now.

It will play better in Summer when it doesn't rain so much, but I think long-term this place is gonna suffer some major damage from erosion. Several bridges are definitely in order at a minimum.

Other Thoughts:

When the course is completely dry of mud, I would give it a 3.0+ rating. It is perfect when the water is full in the creeks, but the course itself does not have standing water and mud everywhere.

If they add a few much needed foot bridges, and dig some well-placed drainage canals this place will gain further respectability and another ratings increase.

Tee boxes really need some help 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has potential. The multi-chain baskets are all still new and in great condition. The holes themselves are pretty good: they're challenging for INT-ADV players and well balanced as to not favor righties or lefties. The distances are a nice mix of long, short, and mid-range holes. There's water in play on several holes which is usually a fun hazard for most players. Other than one or maybe two spots the course flows pretty well, if you print a map you'll have no problems. The course loops back near the pavilion/parking lot after hole #11 to allow you to restock or use the restrooms (which are nice for a public park). The parking is ample. There's a practice basket between the parking lot and tee #1. Several of the harder holes have shorter tee boxes to accommodate lower level players. The young trees on #1 will eventually grow up to provide a nice challenge to the upshot on that hole. Nice multi-use park with dog park, play ground, and picnic pavilion.

Cons:

The tee boxes are easily the worst part of this course. Sad to see a new course with boxes in such sad shape. The dirt base is rutted and the gravel is loose which combine for horrible footing for any player with a run-up release. There are poles for the tees signs, but no actual signs on them. The poles are too close to the tee boxes. The transition from #11 to #12 isn't obvious when you're on the course, check a map to help you there.

Hole #9 needs some work to create a fairway. I understand not wanting to take out too many trees too soon because you can't really put them back if you're wrong... but a reasonable tee shot can still leave you with no second shot to reach the basket. Some people are complaining about #11, in my opinion that hole actually has a tough but fair line to get to the basket.

Other Thoughts:

A local players informed me of a few things: The P&R Department ran out of money for the park/course and that's why there are no tee signs on the posts. There are two tee boxes for #6 and the back one on the slope is supposed to be removed. Also the course is intended to be played with gravel paths and beyond as OB. Be careful trying to retrieve sunk discs on #5 as the water can be up to chest deep there.

Reviewing this course is easy, <span class="italic">rating</span> it is hard. As I said at the start: this course has potential. The hole design is generally good, but the conditions of the tee boxes really limit the enjoyment of play on the course. Unless you're a stand-and-deliver driver you're either slipping or paranoid about slipping on every tee shot... and that just takes the fun factor down a couple notches. With solid tee boxes this course probably jumps up to ~3.5 stars, but as is it just doesn't feel like you can play your game.

great course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

A great course with a mix of technical, open, long, short, and tight holes.
Practice basket near the parking lot!
The course will make you learn every shot there is. If you like technical courses that let you air one out every once in a while this course is what you are looking for.

Cons:

Tee boxes look like they are 10 yrs old already.

Other Thoughts:

If this course had concrete boxes it would easily get a higher rating from me.

Snakes! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's free.

It's new so I'm sure it will get better.

Several holes bring an interesting approach. Mostly the one on the hill with big fallen trees surrounding, and the pond one.

Cons:

2 snakes and a snapping turtle in the water hazard. Hey, it was cool but someone could get bitten.

There's not really much design to it. Bring a good hammer throw, you'll need it since many holes expect you to somehow navigate a disc through a forest of young trees.

Several obvious filler holes.

Hard to navigate unless you are with someone who's played it before. In fact we met some people who said "it's only 15 holes I think". Well we found 16-18 but it wasn't easy.

Other Thoughts:

I had fun. In several years with some boy scouts' help it could become a decent enough course.

Pros:

Great course. It has a nice mix of long and short tees with a lot of woods. You have to pick your shots carefully and you can end up in great positions. A couple of fun water holes too. Just throw right over some ponds.

Cons:

Hole 9 does not have a fairway from what I could find. But the trees are short enough to go over. Hole 11 has a great spot for a fun tee except the huge tree fallen over pretty much covering the basket and making it almost impossible to sink a putt.
