map needs updating - big time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

quiet, easy walk. some very fun shots. Tees are nice and more are getting constructed / rebuilt.

Cons:

very challenging to navigate after hole 6. Yes there is some construction going on and a massive tree stockpiling / cutting operation in the middle of the back nine. Maybe things will stabilize come summertime - very frustrating to have such a mismatch between the 'map' and what is actually out there. That said, it was fun whipping it thru the trees. A chainsaw party would do the place some serious good - lots of just 'chuck it and hope' shots. Most of them, in fact. A pleasant walk thru dense forest with baskets

Other Thoughts:

whoever is the shepherd of this course needs to update the mapping / clarify the route. Maybe its just too early in the season to be asking this much. Just a few directionality arrows / prompts would be very very handy here after hole 6.

Good Times at Hyzer Pines 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great map at hole 1 and a nice practice basket
-Large parking lot by hole 1
-Rubber tee pads in fine shape
-Nice baskets and multiple pin positions for most holes
-Hole maps at most tee pads
-Benches at several tee pads
-Pretty simple to navigate
-Good variety of distances, featuring one par 4
-Hard to lose a disc

Cons:

-No elevation
-Pin location not always accurate/marked on hole signs
-Not a lot of variety- plays entirely through the pine tree forest

Other Thoughts:

I believe this is central Oregon's first disc golf course (or one of the first) and I was glad to finally get to play it! I really liked what it offered and if you're a fan of woods golf, you probably will too.

I'm used to playing on the west side of the mountains where the wooded courses are full of thick underbrush with ferns, blackberries, and/or poison oak. It was a delight to be able to play through the trees and sagebrush without having to risk losing my disc or wearing pants (I did wear pants however... it was January first and the pond was frozen).

The layout somehow didn't feel too repetitive even though it played entirely through the forest. I often had the option of throwing a forehand or backhand off the tee pad depending which line I wanted to go through. One nice feature was a basket positioned up on a small bump on hole 16, I believe. I'd also classify this place as intermediate level, although I'm confident beginners and pros would also enjoy it.

Pretty easy to navigate, especially because someone has used orange flagging ribbon around trees to indicate direction the course follows.. this was nice, but I'd rather see permanent arrows where possible.

Overall it's a fun course and I recommend it if you're in the area!

Nice Scenery, Tricky to Navigate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- The course is in some very nice wooded scenery.
- The baskets and the rubber tee pads are generally in good shape.
- Easy to find your disc.
- Wasn't very crowded on a Saturday afternoon.
- The trees make the course very tricky and interesting.

Cons:

- The back nine is not as enjoyable as the front nine.
- Some construction starts influencing the course at hole 13.
- Then you have a reservoir zone breathing down you neck at hole 14.
- It's flat.
- Some of the holes required some guessing to find. We couldn't find the tee pad on hole 18 at all.
- So many tree obstacles!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Hyzer Pines is a wonderful, 18-hole course set among a grove of Ponderosa Pines, the most common tree found in the Central Oregon Area. The course is located adjacent to Sisters High School.

-I always appreciate a course set in the natural landscape, and this course delivers. The trees are spaced out just right to test your shot-shaping abilities while also lending several opportunities to let it rip. Holes range from 250 to 500 feet.

-Innova Discatcher baskets with multiple positions on every hole. Many holes have positions 100 or more feet apart.

-I'm usually not a fan of rubber tee pads, but the ones here are in excellent condition and flush with the ground.

-Like most small-town courses, you should have the place nearly to yourself.

-There's an very nice signage board with a course map and information by the first tee. Each hole has a metal tee sign indicating the distance to each basket position.

Cons:

-The course is completely flat. That, along with the scattered sagebrush, makes it a challenge to judge distances.

-The front nine is relatively clean. The back nine has thicker undergrowth as well as construction work going on. I would advise against throwing light yellow, brown, or clear colored discs.

-There's a water hazard on Hole 14, fenced in. One unfortunate tree kick, and your disc could easily be gone.

-No hole stands out particularly as the Signature hole.

-A few holes, especially on the back nine, lack a reasonable route to the basket.

Other Thoughts:

-After entering the high school parking lot, proceed to the near left corner. Here, you will find the large entry sign and the first tee.

-This course is my favorite in Central Oregon. It has a wonderful mix of birdie chances and tough holes to play for par. The shade of the tall pines make for a refreshing experience on a hot day.

google maps brought us to the 18th hole on a gravel road by the skate park. There's nothing wrong with that, but you can park by the high school too to be closer to hole 1.

Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good mix of longer, more open holes and shorter, more technical holes
- Very scenic, playing through old growth Ponderosa Pine Trees
- Multiple pin locations and some holes with multiple pads means that throughout this season, the course can play very differently
- Good signage on the tees
- Many of the holes invite the player to choose from more than one line to attack the basket
- Near Sisters which has all kinds of goofy, touristy things to do (I suggest you get a doughnut from Sister's Bakery if you are going for an early morning round)
- The course is rarely crowded
- Friendly locals

Cons:

- The course is completely flat
- Some of the holes seem "unfair"
- The water hazard, which takes a pretty bad shot to hit, is fenced in
- Fairways are full of bushes
- Some of the rubber tee pads are getting worn out
- The back 9 can get littery between the Central Oregon DGC's work parties
- The back 9 can be difficult to navigate if you don't have a map

Other Thoughts:

Hyzer Pines is a scenic course that plays through old growth ponderosa pine trees. Depending on how the course is set up, it has a good mix of short and long holes with a few long par 4's. Each hole has multiple pin locations and many have multiple tees, so course setup makes or breaks how challenging it is. That said, the awesome setting all but guarantees a fun round, especially if you've never played here before.

The local club works hard to keep this course clean and to keep the rubber pads level, but some of the pads are getting old. A few of the pin locations feel like you just throw and pray you don't hit a tree, especially on the back 9. A member of the local club told me that the back 9 was supposed to cover a larger area, but the city changed the permit while the course was already underway, which forced the designer to make changes on some of the holes.

Overall, this is a fun course no matter how it is set up, but the variety of shots and challenge factor can change a lot. Use the map available on the Central Oregon Disc Golf Club's website to help you navigate the back 9. If you are in the Bend area and have the time, it is worth the 30 minute drive to play here.

Pros:

Hyzer Pines DGC is a great course in Sisters Or. This course has a lot of great things like the tee signs work great. Even though the teepads are rubber hey work really well.

- All the holes are basically the same as they all play through gorse and a lot of trees. I would say this is about the same as pine nursery in Bend Or.
- All the holes are pretty close together so the navigation is real easy.
- I found some of the holes real interesting like number 9 it looked like you were throwing in to one giant bush. But it was just a bunch of little bushes.
-There can be some low hanging branches on some of the holes.
- There is a very nice info board at the first tee with a map.

Cons:

-There can be some low hanging branches on some of the holes.
Also there is a ton of dust there. I banged my shoes out a the end and there was a huge cloud of dust.
- I am not a huge fan of how many bushes there are in the fairways and I had to take about 2-5 minutes looking for my
disc.

Other Thoughts:

Hyzer Pines is a great course I might be back there to play it again but I am not sure.

Throwing My Hyzer At Hyzer Pines! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

A sign at the beginning says the Rebel Disc Club is responsible for this excellent course. I understand that the club name has now changed to the Central Oregon Disc Club. Oh well, nice job to whomever is responsible.

The course sits in a lovely Ponderosa Pine forest. At this altitude, there is little underbrush and the trees are scattered on this totally flat piece of land. I found this refreshing after playing a couple of typical Oregon jungle courses on previous days. Sisters makes for a nice pit stop on your drive from central Oregon (Bend/Sunriver) across the pass to the I-5 corridor and Eugene and Salem. Harsh, snowy winters might make this more of a three seasons courses although maybe these central Oregon golfers are tougher than me and might play year around.

The course features a practice basket, nice cut out signs w/sponsors, rubber mats, benches and older Discatchers with the yellow rings.

There are two or three baskets placements on each hole. These can vary in length up to 150' or more. The tee signs have the washer system in place so that helped.

The course has enough length so I wouldn't call it a Rec course as the scattered trees make it fairly easy to stay out of serious trouble. Playing alone, I found navigation to be instinctive and fairly easy.

Cons:

I agree with other reviewers that the openness and flat terrain here do tend to be repetitive. But although the holes were similar, I really enjoyed my round.

The hole length was also fairly constant. I always like to see a couple of ACE runs, even on championship caliber courses. I thought the raised basket on 18th would have been better placed on a shorter ACE run type of hole, one playing somewhere between 175-225'.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoyed the course. Enjoyed my round here. This high and dry climate makes for some wonderful disc golf weather. The course gets beat up a lot for being flat (especially with all the wonderful mountainous terrain so close by) but the designers and club have created a great 18 here using the forest well.

Pros:

Great terain with tall Ponderosa pines, decent hole numbering signs, new large rubber tee boxes. Layout was interesting and multiple pin placements and tee boxes give the player variety. Many benches at tee boxes. Full 18 holes with DiscCatcher baskets.

Cons:

Signage at tee boxes does not show where baskets are, nor which placement is in use. Tee box signs do not denote if they are the long or regular box placements. No trash receptacles throughout course, only at tee 1.

Other Thoughts:

1 water hole was nice, little OB was nice, most trees are limbed up so more airspace for discs.

Pros:

*Great tee pads, nice material and length
*Nice baskets
*Defined fairways
*Well maintained, nice benches
*Good course design/variety
*Decent course flow
*Beautiful area

Cons:

*Holes not marked well- They have 2 different throwing positions for each hole and neither are marked. Very confusing for new players.
*Need better directions between each hole too.
*There is a good amount of underbrush if you miss the fairway area, so we had trouble finding a few discs
*Has one hole next to a fence with water. Very easy to lose a disc- Has a 6" fence with a Do Not Trespass sign on it

Other Thoughts:

5/25/14
This is set in a pine forest. It has a great vibe to the place, mountains in the background, high desert/ forest area, just beautiful. I had to use about every shot in my limited repertoire by the time we ended. All those pine trees with make you shape some interesting shots if you don't hit the fairway area. Some very long holes for those of you that can wing it. Not really any short ace type holes though. For a new player I found this course difficult but fun. I would venture to say that the more experienced thrower would enjoy this even more.

This course was great but could be improved with a few simple upgrades. Adding better signage and better arrows showing where the next hole is would make this course almost perfect. If it wasn't for a few locals I don't know that we would have been able to find our way through on the back 9. Played on a Sunday evening, not too busy.

This is one of those courses that would be worth a long drive to play. If you are staying in the Bend area this is a must play.

6/16/17 UPDATE
It's been 3 years since I've started playing and it's time for an update on Hyzer. I played in a 2 day tournament with the baskets in all 3 positions. After the 2 days I've determined this is the best course in Oregon for those without a big arm. This course makes you throw a lot of different lines, good variety in shots. There are a few hole positions that are straight up stupid, just one of those holes where you would say "why in the world would you put the basket there, that's just dumb." (Hole 1, 2 in particular have a bad spot in 1/3 positions). But for beauty it's right up at the top. Again the vibe there is just great, can't describe it you just have to experience it. The course does flow well but there are definitely a few spots where you can still walk the wrong way, throw at the wrong basket etc. Still if you haven't played this course put it on the top of your list. By far the best in the Bend area. If I were to rank the Bend area courses I'd say 1. Hyzer, 2. Crooked Canyon, 3. Pine Nursery, 4. Redmond. All of them are worth playing, one of the best areas I've ever been to play several courses.

Well worth the trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great variety of fairways that will test every shot in your arsenal, and constantly challenge you to come up with a few more
-Perfect mix of difficult par 3's with a few easier bird options mixed throughout
-Majority of holes have 2-4 pin placements(more on this later)
-Great use of signs to mark hole placement & ft to pin from the teepad
-A few holes with multiple tee options
-Beautifully maintained course
-Practice putting tee in the ground (HUGE points in my book)
-Perfectly challenging, without feeling unfair

Cons:

-Course directions to next tee would be beneficial
-No real garbage/recycling cans throughout the course, so be prepared to pack everything out
-Static scenery(sage brush and pine trees everywhere) messes with depth perception and makes looking for discs disorienting, even in the fairway
-Course flow gets a little tricky after the first 9 on first play through
-Elevation changes.....there aren't any. However this isn't as much a con, just the 1 thing keeping Hyzer Pines from a 4.5 or 5.

Other Thoughts:

This small town course is a real treasure. Not every hole will feel like a completely separate experience then the last, however every shot will feel new. With most fairways being littered with thin pine trees and underbrush, the difference of your placement 5ft left or 5ft right could mean an extra stroke (if not 2). Hyzer Pines will constantly keep you looking for a better line and wishing for better placement. That said you should know this course plays fair. Make smart solid decisions and you'll easily end up within a few strokes of par (either up or down). Lose concentration for a moment and you'll feel the wraith of bogeys start piling up.
Most holes have an extra pin placements that give the fairway a drastically different feel. IE hole 16 right placement requires a tight line drive up the middle for a perfect birdy putt. It's left placement I found myself throwing an elevated spike hyzer to base the pin. The difference between placement is within 30ft, completely different strategies, tiny variable of placement.
Take a course map or smartphone with you to help out with locating some of the pin placements or teepads. 1-9 play fluidly, but once you get to the back 9 (presuming you find it without a map) all bets are off.
Of small town (publicly funded) courses that I've played Hyzer Pines is one of the best. Right up there with Fort Walla Walla DGC. The course offers a ton of variety to it's constant local players, yet still has a great play-ability to bring in us tourists and keep things intresting.

Pros:

Fun holes, great use of available terrain, well maintained, one of the coolest towns I've been to, Basket 18 was a great top-off to a fun round. There is a variety of long drives and shot shaping that make this course very interesting. People in the S.O.A.R. building are helpful and friendly. Multiple pin placements are always good, but I was there such a short time that I only got to play what was set when I got there. When all is said and done I would be happy if this was my home course.

Cons:

Flat, some holes are repetitive, rubber tee-pads are getting worn out in places.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in central Oregon for any reason take the time to check this course out, you won't be sorry. Sisters Oregon is a town that has a major focus on youth programs, and one major aspect of that focus is disc golf. This course is next to the high school, near the middle school and on on the S.O.A.R. property (which is the after school and youth programs center), please set a good example for the kids in the area and show them the positive side of this sport. This course is a great example of how communities can support outdoor youth activities.

Pros:

Multiple pins for every hole

Some Par 4's depending on settings
Good tees
Great signage
Easy to navigate
Well maintained
Active club
Beautiful area

Cons:

The course is set in a Ponderosa pine forest which is beautiful but flat and very much the same throughout - no real variation in terrain.

Other Thoughts:

I love Hyzer Pines and have a great time playing there every time I get the chance. It is playable year round, and being on the "dry side" of Oregon, this means you can usually expect some sunshine and overall good conditions. One of the things I like about it is also the only real drawback to this course, and that is the setting in a beautiful Pondersosa Pine forest. Big trees, sagebrush, sandy soil, on every hole. No elevation to be had on the site, and other than a water treatment pond to the side of one hole, no water in play. But that's not a knock on the design, it's just what is there. It's fun golf, especially for those of us used to playing in thick undergrowth forests. This course has big trees and sparse sagebrush, and other than sometimes getting disoriented by the sameness of the ground cover, it is hard to lose track of your disc.

The fairways are fair and challenging, carved between the Pondos. With up to three pin settings on every hole, and some holes having long tees, there is a lot of variety available on this course. Some of the longer settings reach past 700', and there are also plenty of reachable pins from the tee, if you can control your drive. There is nothing tricky or gimmicky about this course - hit your lines and you will be rewarded, miss your lines and you will hit trees. The variation in right, left, short and long is very well incorporated into the design, with perhaps a slight skew towards right turning holes, which some may say favors sidearm or lefties. So be it - haven't we all seen enough righty hyzer holes by now? And those are still here too. With the multiple pin settings on this course there is something for eveyone.

Another fun aspect of this course for those of us coming from sea level is the altitude. It's not exactly alpine golf but your discs will be more stable. So it's fun to grab some of that flippy plastic and carve your lines. The local club The Central Oregon Disc Golf Club (formerly Hyzer Desert Rebels) has done an outstanding job getting this course installed on the grounds of the SOAR community center on school district property and keeping it there and well maintained. This is the only public 18 hole disc golf course in Central Oregon. There is plentiful camping nearby and Sisters, OR is a beautiful part of the state. If you are in the area, this is a must play course. No drinking or smoking on school district grounds and please throw a few bucks in the donation box to keep the improvements coming!

Good and getting better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Best, and only permanent 18 hole basket course in Central Oregon.
*Interesting, varied design.
*New Tee Locations on 4 or 5 holes, and a couple new pin placements really add some character and challenge.
*Rewards steady, consistent play.
*Almost always empty, except on .....
*League day (currently on Sundays for winter...)

Cons:

*Flat, it is discouraging to see the amazing views of the Sisters mountain range on the way to the course, so close you can almost touch them, only to play 18 gruelingly flat holes.

Other Thoughts:

IMO, the design, and fact that its a full 18 baskets, far outweigh the flatness of the course. Especially with the new design on a number of holes.

Please, when playing this course, keep a couple things in mind:
1) The course is in very close proximity to Sisters High School, and S.O.A.R. (the local after school recreation program) so please be aware of your surroundings, and know that law enforcement frequents the area. There are both little and big eyes watching you....
2. Disc golf has a hard enough time growing in Central Oregon, it has been a long struggle just to get the courses we have, so please do your part to keep this course open. There aren't many trash cans on the course, so if you pack it in, please pack it out.

Ok, I'm done being preachy, I'm sorry, its just with so few courses here, its vital to keep the ones we do have open.

But Hyzer Pines is a great course to hone your skills. With the exception of the new, long pin on #12, and maybe the long pin at #10, almost all of the holes are birdie-able with a great drive, and par-able with a good drive and good upshot.

Its also good for the up-and-coming players. Most fairways are wide and fair, and most pins can be seen from the pads.

I'm always down to play, PM me if you'd like to play a round....
