Cherry Creek

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Good use of land. A small creek comes into play several times and the trees, especially on the back nine, are well used. There isn't a lot of elevation, but it is well used.
-- Restroom and map at parking lot.
-- Best holes are on the back nine in the more wooded part of the course. No. 12 has you throwing through trees over two small ravines to a basket uphill. No. 16 is slightly downhill off the tee, through trees to a basket just past a small creek. No. 17 is slightly downhill off the tee and through trees to a basket in the open.
-- Two pin positions per hole, but the second pin position is not listed on the map. This adds variety, but it can also create some confusion and cause you to spend time searching for a basket.
-- Tee signs. They show all three tee locations and have a map of the hole. A few are missing. Also, the tee signs only show the original pin location, so direction and distance can be off.
-- Three tee positions per hole. This allows the course to be accessible to multiple skill levels. Based on the original basket positions (the distances listed on the tee signs), you can have 13 holes shorter than 200 feet from the red tees. From the blue tees, the shortest hole is 215, and the longest if 473.

Cons:

-- Navigation, especially on the back nine in the woods, is sometimes tricky.
-- Natural tee pads. Some are not holding up well.
-- Front nine is in a multi-use part of the park with a walking path that comes into play a lot. You will likely spend time waiting for paths to clear. This part of the course is lightly wooded, and the holes are fairly pedestrian.
-- Ants. I know we are outside, but I have never seen so many ants in one place.

Other Thoughts:

-- Par. I don't usually comment on par, but the pars are ridiculous on several of the red (short) tees. It appears par was set based on the blue (long) tee and then not changed for the shorter tees. The result is a 127-foot par 4 hole from the reds, and two other par 4s right at 250 feet. It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the course, but if you care about par, this might bother you.
-- Disc loss potential is low overall; it's nearly non existent on the front nine and low to moderate on the back nine.

very nice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

3 sets of tees on every hole. nice variety of wooded holes and more open park holes. park is mostly flat but elevation is used a couple of times.Small creek runs through the wooded part of the course (it was dry today) and several pins take advantage of it. Restroom on site. nice tee signs although a couple were missing. Navigation is ok but I needed to look at the map a couple of times. The map is on DGCR

Cons:

no concrete tees. the tee signs do not have the correct distances for the course layout I played. I saw some shorter pin placements not being used. I believe that the signs refer to the original shorter pins and when new pins were added no new signs were made. It's the same as the info on this site but it needs updating

Other Thoughts:

I really like the layout here and I am a big fan of multiple tees so you have the option to play what suits your game. The 1st part of the course is in a multi use area so watch for other park users but the course layout does a good job of mostly avoiding throwing at areas where that could be a problem. the back 9 is in a more secluded wooded area. I understand that buying new signs could be expensive but it seems like they could at least update the hole info on DGCR to reflect the new pin positions. It's nice to know the distance instead of just guessing. All in all I definitely recommend this course if you are anywhere in the area.

Play the back 9 twice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great clean park. Multiple blue white red tee markings. The back 9 through the woods has elevation and trees and is pretty solid. Nice baskets nice signs.

Cons:

No tee pads and the signs are VERY VERY wrong on distance. Way short. by 30-60 feet. The front 9 is a little flat and boring and flows odd around 7-8.

Other Thoughts:

The back 9 is a huge upgrade from front. If no one is there just play the back twice!

While Your SO is at Trade Days, Take Refuge Here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very well thought out 18 hole setup with three tee positions per hole. Each position offers unique flight paths and routes
- Clean and well maintained park area & wooded fairways.
- Course signage is good with a large course map located near the restrooms. Navigation was very easy
- Excellent use of terrain elevation and natural tree cover. No two holes were alike in my opinion.

-First 9 is a lightly-moderately wooded area bordered by the walking trail and a pavillion playground area. Its open enough to stretch your arm out, yet enough trees exist to mess up an otherwise perfect shot.

-The Back 9 is made up of well maintained fairways inside a thick and heavily timbered hardwood forest, with a healthy herbaceous layer ripe with thorns in places. Good shots are duly rewarded, while errant throws may ricochet into the brush.

Cons:

-Dirt teepads; after playing on concrete dirt seems inadequate, although here the soil isn't ill-suited for dirt pads.
- I could see parking being a problem for a large group or if an event is going on, but this is a very minor nitpick.
-OB boundaries were fading in some areas, especially along the creek in hole. Easy fix with a rattlecan.

Other Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed this course in spite of my awful play and the 30 mph winds. There's very little chance to lose a disc, and even in areas with water in the creek a disc is easily retrievable.

Just about every hole can be aced, even from the blue tees with the proper power, and the perfect throw.

All in all this in an excellent course that is just south of the I20 corridor, and makes a great stop for either a warm up round on the way to your destination or a cool off round to cap off a day.

Bathrooms and map at the start of the course and the course loops around so #10 is there too.
Open holes, but tree's are used very well
some of the holes had multiple Pin placements

Cons:

Dirt Tee boxes

Other Thoughts:

Did not have time to play the 18 holes from the map, and it was 100+ the day I stopped by. I played the front 9 only.

I had heard there were new holes in the woods and I saw at least 2 of the new baskets (different brand that the original 18 yellow band baskets)

I will be back to finish the 18 and play the woods holes someday.

A good combination of shots 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is well maintained and has adequate signage and multiple tees.
There is a good mix of short, moderate, and longer length holes as well as dog legs L/R.
The flow is logical and there are multiple pin placements.
There are lines to be shaped on many of the holes and the back 9 is a good technical challenge. Also there are low ceiling shots.
Some holes have ace run potential.
There was a small amount of water threat as well.
There are other amenities like a playground, restrooms, etc.
The front 9 is a moderately wooded park style course and the back 9 is more technical.
Favorite holes here were 14 and 17.

Cons:

The walking path can come into play(more so on the front 9) so be aware before you throw.
Some of the tees were rutted a bit.
Some of the low lying spots that play by the creek area can be soggy at times.
If you get off of the fairway on the back 9 the thorns are pretty thick in spots. Stay in the fairway and you will be ok.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course that will challenge your overall game. The front 9 is a bit more forgiving in that there is some room for error. You will still need to shape your shots in order to score well. The back 9 is going to test your shot shaping abilities.
There is a good balance on this course. The front 9 will appeal to those players that like a park style course and the back 9 will be a technical players dream. I think they did an excellent job combining the 2 and making for an excellent course. If you are in the area I highly recommend playing this course.

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Baskets were all in tact and in good shape. White and Blue (Long and Medium) tee pads clearly marked. The flow of the course is quite nice, it loops you right back around to the parking lot. The foliage is pretty nice to look around and take in from time to time. Front 9 was very clean and maintained well. Easy access to at the time clean restrooms right near hole 1.
Tons of parking, playground on site as well.

Cons:

Fairways on the front 9 are very compact and what I guess one could describe as "stacked". You go tee pad to basket to tee pad, which during peak hours I could imagine would be pretty interesting with larger groups, in conjunction with runners/joggers/walkers/children etc on the walking path. Seems the front 9 was a bit squished in to a pretty small area to make it fit.

The tee pad signs leave some to be desired I think when it comes to each hole, some were there, others were missing, some had been "tagged" and written on, and the red (short)tee pads were not marked, the ones that are were drawn in with a sharpie.
Back 9 was pretty trashy when I played there, it's more out of sight from the rest of the area so it obviously doesn't see as much traffic, or city crews for that matter.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a nice, closely stacked course. If you want to test your game against trees, the back 9 will do that for you.

If I were closer, I would play it more often. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Mix of open and wooded holes.

Multiple tee boxes and alternate basket locations. Every course should have these.

The park is well maintained. Fairways are nice and clear of brush and the holes are fairly well marked.
There isn't a spot on the course were I thought "they need a bridge here". Where one is needed, there is one.
Some cities install the course, forget about bridges and signs and have you climbing in and out of ditches and creeks just to get from the tee to the basket (the Canton parks department could teach the Fate parks department a few things).

Tons of parking.

Cons:

Dirt tees. I have been spoiled by concrete pads.

Alternate baskets aren't marked on the signs. Not a big deal but it makes the distances listed on the signs wrong.

The front 9 feels a little like it was forced inside the walking path of the park. There is plenty of room for them but on a few holes you occasionally have to wait on joggers, bicyclists or other muggles. Even though I have played this course a few times I find myself walking to the wrong hole or throwing at the wrong baskets on the front 9.

Other Thoughts:

We played a few holes of the second course that is being installed and it looks awesome.

I wouldn't recommend playing any of them yet. My legs suffered the wrath of many thorns and I lost a disc in the heavy brush. Then we got lost trying to find a hole, and wandered in the woods for a bit before finding the park again (and I used to think I had a good sense of direction).

That's what we get for being impatient and playing a course that is still a work in progress.
I can't wait till it is finished, If the few holes we played are any indication it will be fantastic.

The addition of a second great course to this one will make the hour drive to the park much more agreeable.

Pros:

Some real fun holes- the red is great for kids- The back nine is fun and really difficult. It is heavily wooded but there are some great lines on many of these holes. The front nine is not easy and there are some trees here as well. The whites and the blues create different shots. The reds are perfect for kids or beginners. My twelve year old got some birdies on a few of the front nine from red and he was really excited. The playground is awesome here too for the little tykes. There is not a whole lot of traffic here and it feels really secluded. I got my first ace here and for someone more experienced I am sure would do great here. There are mutiple pin positions and three tees (blue, white and red) so you could play it several times and not get bored.

Cons:

I don't mind the dirt tees but when I played there were some uneven tees, the back nine is in the woods- fire ants, poison ivy, mosquitos, be prepared.

Other Thoughts:

This really is a must play for anyone in the area, it was a lot of fun , the back nine are great but the front nine are not bad either. Bring the family and have fun.

A course for everyone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The thing that I truly love about this course is the fact that it truly caters to everyone. The front 9 is fairly open with trees strategically throughout making it playable for any level. This is the opportunity that an experienced player would want to capitolize on to get his score down. Once you go into the back 9 you better be buckled in. This is as difficult, clever, and beautiful a finishing touch that a course could possibly hope for. When you think East TX back woods, thats what you get. Tall trees, tight lanes, and beautiful routes. Strokes can add up.

Cons:

When your in the country as this course is, your gonna get some poison ivy, to me, thats a part of DG, but not everyone thinks that way. Oh yeah, dirt tee pads arent my favorite.

Other Thoughts:

Other than the dirt tee pads, this is a top level course and I take advantage of any chance I can to get out there and play.

10 new Alt Pin placements with 4 more to come in the near future; baskets are moved every 3rd so the course is a new venture.
New steps were installed on holes 12 and 17. Widow makers were cut down, the City is currently grinding down the stumps. T-box on hole 8 is no longer an up hill slope. you have to come see it. PDGA tournaments are on the course schedule every 3 months thru October, Oct. B-tier Breaking Chains Open.

Cons:

If you don't live in Canton, then your missing out on a great home town course. If you make the drive, you will know its well worth it.

Very fun course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pulling up the course, you pretty much can tell you are going to have a blast. It is tucked away in a nice off the beaten path area. The park is clean, and well taken care of. There was no trash, and the bathrooms were decently clean (real restrooms, not a portable).

The first of the course was pretty easy, and you had the decent possibility of a birdie on 7 of the first 9. (9 of 9 if you have a pretty big arm). The second half of the course was much tougher. Some of the holes were just crazy with the lines you had to try.

Fun factor was off the charts, and the course was clean, and semi cart friendly.

Cons:

Some of the holes were just a little crazy. You know the ones that its kind of a crap-shoot. Say a prayer and throw? There were a couple of those on the back nine.

Other Thoughts:

Get your birdies in early....if you want to keep your score decent, you will need them. From the blue tees, I went into the back nine down three, I ended up plus two at the end.

Make a drive to play this course. Make plans to play the whites first, and then the blues. It is like a new course.

It's worth the drive!

I'm impressed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is well planned. The front nine is inside a walking trail, mostly flat, with well placed baskets that get you good and warmed up. If you don't get par on most of these, it's your fault. Then you hit the back nine, which follows a creek through the woods. You've got several tunnels, several shots where the basket skirts the edge of the creek bringing a steep drop off into play with water, and several more that you need some precision and a lot of luck to get a good drive. As it says, every hole has 3 tees, all easily marked. The blue and white (we played white) are placed well and typically spaced apart, with the red being in some cases half the distance of blue. I can easily see this being perfect for wives or playing with your kids. Most of the reds are in Ace Race territory, so you could easily play a quick 9 from there after 18. The course isn't very long, but there are some hills on the back, so the walk is a decent workout. Signs are on every blue tee for distances and par. There's a nice bathroom as well.

Cons:

This is a very nice park, so on a weekend you will have walkers and other players to deal with. The walking path does come into play in a few places, so be careful. The course was crowded for an East Texas course, but everyone was friendly. Several of the holes on the back 9 were not tunnel holes, but crazy luck holes. you might get a great drive, but then there are still 15 trees between you and the basket for your approach.

Other Thoughts:

This course has had a lot of work go into it. The tees, signs, navigation and baskets are all great. You can tell on the back nine they've done a lot of clearing and burned the stumps in places. Someone has even gone through and painted orange some of the smaller stumps that you'd probably trip on. This course feels similar to UT Tyler's course, in that it's an simple, straightforward front 9 and a tough back nine. I can easily see this being the course to take your wife or girlfriend to, as the front nine is a great place for lower power throwers or people learning to play. I saw more women on this course playing than really any other course I've been to. There's a completely awesome playground at this park as well, that we had trouble staying off of because how awesome it is. Bring the kids, bring the wife, and have a really good day at Cherry Creek.
Update: a year and a half later played this one again. They've added a bunch of alternate tees that add a good challenge to many of the holes, but these are not marked on the tee signs. My niece played with us and the red tees are perfect for beginers or younger players, wish more courses had this.

The Improvements Are Working! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1. Great for beginners and yet challenging enough for seasoned players. The 3 tee boxes on every hole (blue-white-red) also add to this beginner/seasoned abilities too!

2. Overall fun factor here is huge!

3. Front 9 is a great warmup and the back 9 is one heck of a challenge

4. Great amenities (especially the really nice bathrooms) and the double loop/figure 8 design of the course with those right in the middle of the loop make it very convienent.

5. The brush has really been cleared out lately making many off-the-fairway shots next to impossible now possible.

6. Great signage including a huge map for the front 9 right when you pull up and a full map on the restroom facilities of the whole course.

7. Enough shade on the front 9 and plenty on the back 9 for the hotter months.

8. Park is always very clean, and the locals we've run into are always very nice.

9. Bridges on the back 9 are great! The city built bridges to cross a couple of the major creek points on holes 16 and 17 which makes it really nice to get around these holes.

10. Pretty hard to lose a disc on this course, only a couple deeper creeks areas on 16 and 17, but elsewise retreivable everywhere else on this course.

Probably a lot more for me to list, but can't right now.

Cons:

1. Although the signage is great, it does seem that after finishing hole 2, it's a little confusing to newbs on this course as hole 6 (even though labeled) looks like it would be hole 3 tee boxes. Not really a huge deal by any means, nor really that big if of a "con" but worth noting if you are going to try this course for the first time.

2. Tee boxes - I love the 3 tee boxes setup with White being "regular", Blue as "advanced", and the Red being more "beginner" tees. My complaint though is they are all dirt, mostly sandy mix that is brought in for each which is nice and packs down a bit, but they are not level and your foot slides easily. I would really like to see concrete tee pads, but I know this is an expense the city will have to take on. The rubber test mat as mentioned in the previous review was "ok" but definitely lacking, I'll expound below.

3. Bring boots or hard shoes, you will stub your toe(s) everywhere on this course, especially the back 9. The clearing done for this course and especially the recent clearing (not a con) has left little stumps all about 2-3 inches sticking out of the ground. There are a few in the major walking areas spray painted orange, but it is a major pain in the butt.

4. I think this is hole 12 I'm referring too, those who have played it will know what I'm talking about. The tees are great and the basket at the top of the "ridge" makes it challenging as a layup for putts. My "con" is that after the recent rains, it seems that "bowl" in front of the ridge may become more of a small pond. Although this will definitely add to the challenge of this hole and be even more fun, I can also see the potentional based on throwing lanes for this to become a disc eater. For the most part Cherry Creek Park is a place that is hard to lose a disc at, and hole 12 may change that if we get the rain to fill up that bowl.

Other Thoughts:

I love playing Cherry Creek Park! I look forward to it every time I get to make the trip from my house to go play it. Yesterday's play was amazing, we all played a round from the whites and then went back to play a "fun run" from the reds. After a tie between my brother and I on the fun run, we started playing the blue tees for a tie breaker and finished just before dark. This course is a must for anyone going east of DFW or living in the area. Easily enough of a course for beginners (especially the red tees) and challenging enough for expereinced players from the whites and definitely the blue tees. The fun factor here is HUGE and worth your time to make this a regular stop not far off of I-20. I highly recommend this course and when I can make the trip east I will every time!

For the previous reviewer, the rubber mat is a nice idea, but personally my vote is thumbs down. The mat itself is too short, not level, and in our Texas heat and summers I see it cracking and being replaced every few years. I would much rather see the city spend the money on concrete tee pads or perhaps host some tourneys or fundraisers to help offset the cost of the concrete pads. Just my $.02 :)

Other Thoughts:

The city of Canton and the CDGC is 100% commited to the improvement of this park. We are placing a test rubber tee-pad on hole 1 in the next two weeks. If the players like it we will move forward installing them on all the tee-boxes. Look for this course to have a serious amount of attention for the next 3 months. you can not miss seeing the improvements.

Pros:

As soon as you pull in it looks like it's gonna be fun, and it never disappointed. We played on a very windy day which made the front 9 just hard enough, and the woods on the back 9 keep the wind out just enough. Leave your tomahawks an thumbers at home, but you'll use everything else.. Don't be afraid to think outside the box when choosing different lines through the woods. Not sure if it's on purpose, but the whole course is opened up nicely with risk/reward shots through multiple tree lines on each hole. Plays fast, lots of fun

Cons:

Not many.. Maybe the red tees are too easy and the blues are crazy hard. Maybe. And it's in Canton. I don't know how big the DG community is in Canton, but we were the only ones on the course all day. Drove like 80 miles, but it was worth it
