Farewell, Verdugo.... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lit up at night, elevation changes, tight landing zones surrounded by OB, and an awesome crowd of regulars at the beer garden.

Cons:

This course is closing on 12/31/16 and being replaced by some ugly condos....it's a crying shame.

Night golf! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Plenty of parking. $7 to play all day. Beers and food are great! The BLT is my favorite.

Manicured course, easy to navigate.

Easy to get to barring traffic.

10 gallon water coolers dispensing fresh water on holes #6 and #8/17.

Cons:

Too easy for Pro's. Kind of tough for new players.

The ball golfers move very slow.

Very small chance of running into Rattlesnakes and Poison Ivy.

Other Thoughts:

This course gets a high grade because the stadium lights turn on when it gets dark so I can play all year long! Winter rounds!!!

Pleasantly Surprised 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 26, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is just big enough to qualify as a legitimate 18 hole disc golf course. Better yet, the course design follows the original par-3 bolf course route and creates a near-perfect downhill-to-uphill ratio. Slopes of the area foothills appear to have been terraced laterally, creating many pleasing drives just far enough to throw a driver. Hole 10 is 507 feet, with most others right-sized for intermediate level play.

Has a few downhill bomb shots that are really fun, with nice views of the surroundings. Also has some alternate tees that extend into areas of the course not played by ball golfers.

Despite the drought, the fairways were nice and green, with beautiful flora at various points on the course. We saw what I believe was a Golden Eagle, along with jack rabbits and other wildlife. Food and beverages available on-site, with scorecards and pencils near Hole 1. Many holes had water jugs at the tees, which was appreciated on 9/26/15 when the temperature was 94 degrees. Friendly, helpful staff.

Cons:

The first few holes overlap a bit, and may leave one underwhelmed at first. Some very odd pin positions, sometimes in disappointing locations, though this may be a move to prevent overlapping drives. Bolf greens are OB, which isn't too bad to deal with but is a slight compromise.

Other Thoughts:

Fairly crowded, but with no discernible discord from either or between ball or disc golfers. Perhaps comparable most with LaMirada in terms of aesthetics, but also different in being a private course shared with bolfers versus a public park. Slightly underrated by other reviewers on this site.

Course is right next to the 210 and is easy for those new to the course to find, and would seem to be a go-to course for those living in and around Los Angeles.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has pretty much all the amenities that you could want. The shop is nice and the manager is super friendly. They have discs you can buy or rent for the round. Great location and easily accessible from the highway, also close to some other great courses.

The course has a good mix of hole lengths...some that take a huge arm to reach and others that are pretty easy birdies. I didn't realize you aren't supposed to play the greens, that would have added an entirely new level of challenge to this course. I will have to go back and try that! That would have been nice to be informed of that in the proshop. Still great fun!

The navigation is fantastic and very intuitive as the cart path helps you figure your way. There is a spot or two near the end (I believe around 12-14) that is a little hard to figure out but maps are available.

The elevation is great and makes for a couple of fun shots down to the pins. These aren't really "top of the world" shots as they are too low for me to really qualify for that (try out Sharktooth if that is what you are after) but still tremendously fun and challenging to throw your disc just right for the birdie.

The course was relatively empty except for some groundscrew people who were doing a great job keeping the course up. It is meticulously well maintained. A definitely plus. Great course to throw some rollers both backhand and forehand. There were a few holes I could only reach that way.

Cons:

I can't really think of anything else except the slight navigation issue and even that is helped by the map. Try it out!

Other Thoughts:

Be careful of the nasty stuff along the fence by the road...it is thick. Also, I wish I had known there wasn't a backstop on 18. I figured there was a put a flick roller down onto the practice green with a person out on it. From the tee it looks like there is a backstop/netting behind the pin that I was figuring would put me in a spot for a birdie!

Share The Course With The Golfers! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Verdugo Hills was the second of three disc golf courses I played in So Cal that are shared with the ball golfers. The first being nearby DeBell and the last being Sun Valley DGC just outside San Diego in La Mesa. Verdugo is the only one of the three that is 18 holes. Sharing the course with the regular golfers takes some getting used to. I felt somewhat like an intruder on their course and kept apologizing to them as I passed by.
Verdugo starts with a great little clubhouse prominently displaying discs for sale (both new and used). The clubhouse also features drinks and a restaurant. The fee is $5 per round or $7 for multiple rounds of play.
Like the other three par courses I played, the terrain consists of manicured grass and some nice elevation variances. This elevation gives you holes 8 and 17,both great little downhills.

Playing the greens as OB only added to the challenge. I liked having some nice golf course amenities such as water stations, lots of benches and cool, shaded areas to rest under.

Verdugo DGC is a recreational course which won't provide much of a challenge for advanced players on up. It was perfect for me, a total REC player.

Cons:

Holes 13-14-15 were much the same. All were just 270' open, straight shots and then shoot back on the next fairway. Not a whole lot of creativity here.

Some reviewers complain about the tee pads. I was fine with them as not much of a run-up is needed on many of these holes.

Other reviewers have commented on the slow play of the regular golfers. The ones I encountered were more than happy to let me, as a single, play through. And they were curious as to what i was doing and about disc golf, in general. I let a couple ball golfers throw some of my discs on # 17. I might be able to convert them to disc golf.

Other Thoughts:

The $ might make this course a little too pricey for some players but for an occasional round, I found it enjoyable, challenging enough for me and just a pleasure to be able to throw discs in such a lovely, well kept, beautiful little green oasis, right in the middle of all this Southern California brownness.

I would have loved to have been able to come back and try my luck at playing the course at night. That sounds like a great time.

Cleanest DG course I've played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Very, very well maintained course
-Line of sight Pin locations
-Height elevations
-On site restaurant to buy food and beverages
-On site store to buy discs/bags

Cons:

-This is a huge con for me for this course and it is getting stuck behind golfers. This is a given seeing as the course is designed with golf in mind, but it is none-the-less annoying if you are stuck behind a group of 3-4 super slow golfers luggin around their full set of clubs.
-My friends consider this a con but the course is $5 to play. Considering the fact that I don't go there that often it doesn't bother me paying it seeing as they have the most maintained course I've played on. I suppose if you go there 2-3x's a week it can get pricey.
-Parking is sometimes a problem and you have to park on the street but this is not a huge problem.
-I find this course to be a tad bit boring. For the most part they are all straight fairways and you can almost always see the pin from the Tee.
-Another huge con for me is that this course caters only to the golfers because of the Tee's. They do not have a traditional long box cement setup. You have to start on cement and then jump on the short green tee (the golf mat) and throw. This is by far the worst Tee setup I have played on, and considering the fact that they charge $5 a person you would think they would set up Tee's specifically for DG'ers.

Other Thoughts:

Not my favorite local course but one of the reasons I keep coming back to this course is hole #8 & #13. The elevation drop off is by far the best I have played and it is a great place to try new discs and see how they fly in the wind. As of late I have been seeing a lot more people showing up for DG in this course which is great because I always prefer to get stuck behind a DG player than a golfer, lol.

Fun layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays on a small golf course, so the maintenance is impeccable for disc golf standards. The front nine plays up and down some minor elevation changes with reachable holes and limited obstacles. A few of the shots have enough trees to make you shape a specific line, the rest rely on roll-aways and golf green OB around the pin for difficulty.

The back 9 is a little longer, offering some chances to stretch out your arm. The holes themselves are mostly flat other than the 18th shot which offers a fun downhill finish. There is again some roll-away potential with the way the fairways are terraced on the back 9, so an inaccurate drive can end up a ways down the hill.

There are red and blue tees, and a handful actually offer some nice differences in length and difficulty with a couple cool blue tees on the hill on the back 9. There are multiple pin placements, I played a setup where half the course had left turning shots and the other half had right turning shots so there is opportunity for decent balance and variety.

Cons:

The course gets pretty repetitive. The shots are all basically straight ahead with the pin tucked slightly left or right at the end, and the distances feel very similar throughout the course. For all the elevation on the property, the restriction of following the golf layout makes for a surprisingly flat set of shots, there is much more uphill and downhill walking than throwing.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course very approachable, with reasonable lengths and little real punishment for errant shots. The OB adds strokes but you won't lose a disc or end up in thick rough. More experienced players will find this a fun birdie run type course, with lots of reachable holes and not a ton of variety. The option to play under the lights here is definitely a cool bonus.

Pros:

A great course to play, can be challenging at times. It's also a great change from other traditional dg courses. The elevation change is a nice element with two amazing shots down the hill. The best part though, is the ability to play at night!! No more leaving the course when it gets dark.

Cons:

I had lost a disc on the course and continually checked the pro shop for it. Every time was the same answer, "haven't seen it". Two months later when I ask again, I spot the disc on the rental rack beat to hell. A relatively new wraith was completely trashed with chunks missing everywhere and my name and number sharpied over. After arguing with the manager, I then had to buy the disc back. Other than that, the course has been fun.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Well maintained grounds with all the amenities of golf course. Benches, trashcans and water coolers throughout.

- Elevation change comes into play on most holes. Especially 8 and 17. Even on the seemingly flat holes there are steep drop offs that can come into play if you get of course.

- Lights!!! Disc golf at night is always a good time. And for the most part the lighting is adequate. However I would recommend bringing a flashlight along especially if you are going to play the long tees on the back 9.

- The couse presents unique challenges compared to your regular DG course. With all the greens out of bounds, multiple flower beds out of bounds and frequent steep drop offs by the basket the course can easily punish errant shots.

- Pro shop, bar and restaurant. Oh, and you can drink on the course.

Cons:

- Some holes can get repetetive, especially on the front 9. The front plays short wide open, and can be a birdie fest without ever using a driver.

- The multiple tee positions are usually side by side without any major difference. However there are a handfull on the back 9 that totally change the hole.

- You do have to share with the ball golfers.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I enjoyed playing this course and feel it is a great addition to the area. The course definitely has a unique feel and probably rewards different skill sets than a traditional course. Most holes have wide open fairways and all you have to worry about is going out of bounds or rolling down the hill. However I was impressed with the increased distances on the back 9 when you play the blue tees and the long pin placements.

Until a year ago I have to admit I was boycotting disc golf on ball golf courses and now the 2 that I have played are among my favorites. It's hard to compare with traditional DG courses but it is definitely a good time and worth a stop. I highly recommend taking a road trip to Sylmar and Oak Grove during the day, then play here under the lights to cap it all off.

Pros:

-Facilities!! Plenty of water available on the course, lights for night golf, decent beer selection, pro shop slowly building up a good collection of discs, decent food, clean bathrooms...overall just a nice place to play a round.
-Setting, tucked away in tujunga it really is a great spot to toss a round or three, a pretty good workout from hiking a round as well.
-Disc golf crowd, I have yet to come out here and not end up playing a round with a bunch of friendly people, all of the guys in the shop play and will keep the lights on late occasionally.
-Elevatation, two really fun shots on 8/17 throwing down large hills to baskets on either side of a bolf green, always fun to just watch a disc cruise off of the hill.

Cons:

-While I really havent had any issues with the bolfers there are occasionally large (8+) groups of idiots out there that can really slow things down.
-Obstacles, Im really a fan of tight wooded courses and for the most part the trees dont play a huge part in shaping this course.

Other Thoughts:

I will definetly be spending more time up here during the summer nights, overall a friendly well maintained spot that is happy to see the disc golf crowd.

The Magic Happens at Night. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This review is from the perspective of a relative noob, and someone who enjoys novel, weird experiences. It probably won't reflect the opinions of seasoned disc golf veterans, or anyone who thinks of it as a serious sport as opposed to a way to have some fun with friends. That said, here's what I foud to like about it:

- LIGHTS! Really, as far as I'm concerned, it's all about when the sun goes down and the ball golfers become few and far between, and you can recapture some of the childhood magic of playing miniature golf at night... if you're somebody who enjoys the feeling of light and shadows providing contrast for each other, then that's a good time right there. It's an abstract thing, it's true, but if you like it, you'll like it.

- Interesting approach to "obstacles". In the previous post (no disrespect meant!) the author complains first that the fairways present no challenge, then complains about the punishment meted out for bad throws by way of rolling down the terraced landscape... while I can understand that point of view, I would like to point out that for those of us relatively new to the sport, this seems like a reasonable challenge: throw cautiously enough to avoid that outcome, while still making progress towards the basket. Given that the ball golf putting greens are out-of-bounds, this often presents a fairly narrow margin of approach to the basket, and really makes you consider the possible outcomes of your throw. I don't find it less challenging than the fairways of other more orthodox courses I've played, just differently challenging, in a more abstract way.

- There are water coolers at various points along the course... as someone who likes to avoid dehydration, I appreciate not having to carry a lot of extra water... saves room for beer! Which brings me to...

- Yep. You can buy a decent selection of beer at the clubhouse, and don't have to feel like a criminal for toting it around with you on the course. That's kind of nice.

Cons:

- It's true, the back nine are kind of repetetive, as they switchback up the hill... but at least the change of directions provides alternation of which side you have to be afraid of rolling down...

- There aren't a lot of long holes, so don't come looking for those.

- Signs warn of rattlesnakes. Haven't seen any, though. Lots of rabbits, for sure.

Other Thoughts:

I find the odd situation of playing on a course with ball golfers (all friendly, so far) fun rather than irritating, and you can probably look deep within yerself and guess whether you'll feel the same way or not. This is a laid back golf course, and the bolfers seem to appreciate that the disc golfers are helping to keep the course from going under, so it's a fairly good natured experiment. Not for everybody, but enjoyable in it's way.

Not worth it to me 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The main "pro" to this course is the amenities, of which there are a slew and a half.

- Clean, manicured, everything clearly marked.
- Walkways, stairs & railings (as needed) between holes
- Benches, towels & trash cans at every tee
- Water jugs & paper cups at several tees
- Easy to get to from the 210
- Food & drink available on-site

If it weren't for the "con"s, this course would get a 4.5-disc rating minimum just for the fringe bennies.

Cons:

The main "con" here is the course itself. Seems like with VERY few exceptions all the holes are about the same distance, no significant obstacles anywhere, a good practice course but nowhere are you obliged to think about line-shaping or other strategic factors. Any decent pro would score -12 using only a putter, and that's on a bad day.

The fact that it's a bolf course contributes mightily to this, of course, and as far as I'm concerned playing DG on a course like this is the strongest argument possible against the kind of environmental rape that goes on when a bolf course goes into the ground.

One example only: the course (especially the back nine) is terraced so that every fairway is more-or-less level, tee to pin, but there's a significant dropoff between fairways. So what happens is that if your disc lands wrong, it can easily roll downhill and wind up 4 or 5 fairways downslope. This isn't how land naturally lies (think Chavez Ridge) and the punishment you get for throwing inaccurately or unluckily is imo arbitrarily harsh. Minus 1.5 discs just for this.

There's a few other little "con"s, like the hiccup in the layout between #7 and #8, and also the fact that the "red" and "blue" tees are typically side by side, six feet apart. No difference whatsoever, so why have two tees?

Other Thoughts:

This was my first time playing DG on a BG course and if I can help it, it's my last. It's just not worth the time, trouble, etc., to drive all this way to play in these conditions.

Golf on a Golf Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Dedicated land, no random ppl getting in the way
-Lots of elevation changes. I think just about every hole has some sort of elevation change.
-Good balance of hole lengths, but it's broken into a short 9 and a long 9.
-LIGHTS!
-Multiple Tees
-Very easy navigation
-Food, Beer, shelter & amenities
-Can polish up both your golf games at the same time at the same place!
-Right off the 2 and the 210 which makes it very easy to get to.
-Polite staff

Cons:

-Some repetition, quite a few left to right shots.
-In most cases the multiple tees are pointless
-Not many obstacles on the fairways...but that's because they are fairways!
-I assume sharing the course with traditional golf would lead to long rounds, but the day I went I had no problems whatsoever.
-Some poison oak is out there, but if you throw into it you honestly deserve to get punished :p

Other Thoughts:

I liked playing this course. I went on a day that it had just finished raining so the place wasn't that busy. $5 to play all day is fine with me to play on a manicured, dedicated course. It was fun, it's not very challenging for an experienced player, but it is fun. I can't wait for a combination disc golf/golf tournament. That would be sweet.

*Water and trash cans on almost every hole.
*Great views from the hill!
*Full bar with a bunch of really good different beers, and a full grill with some pretty good food.
*Smoking and drinking is legal on the grounds

Cons:

*Not much of a con but it is $5 for the entire day.
*Food and beer is kinda costly
*On weekends there is a wait on each tee because of the ball golfers

Other Thoughts:

Pros:

-Well groomed ball golf greens
-Considerable elevation
-Two tees

-DISCatchers
-LIGHTS until 9:30PM! (They have been on later than 9:30 every time I have visited)
-Food and beer on site...Prices at pro shop are CHEAP! I don't know what this ^ guy is smoking. Huge can of fosters $4.25, burger and fries $6.
-Shorter than average open course
-I would say this is an easier than average course, great for beginners but with enough challenge to entertain experienced players.
-$5 day pass keeps the riff raff out

Cons:

-In many cases, multiple tees present little change in play
-Night time brings huge groups of disc golfers
-1 night round typically takes over 2 1/2 hours (this is a short course!) because of said huge groups.

Other Thoughts:

Verdugo Hills Golf Course is a short 18 hole ball golf course along a hillside overlooking La Crescenta and the 210 freeway. The greens are fairly wooded with a variety of different types of trees, and the course is well maintained.

For ball golf, this is an extremely short piece of land true to the description of a 'pitch & putt.' Even with disc golf, getting to the pin is usually possible in just one throw, allowing multiple birdies for the experienced player. As per most ball courses, the challenge presented here is not so much in its amount of woods, but rather its elevation. It is still possible to go off the fairway as we witnessed groups with flashlights in the brush several times.

The vibe at night at this course is really something special. It's great to have everything lit up the way it is and the hum of the freeway actually creates a silence that is pretty calming. It is almost like a video game in some ways. There are also lots of rabbits all over the fairways which, unless you have a heart of coal, is totally awesome.

There are two tee pads per hole, red and blue, and they offer variety about half of the time. In many cases, the difference is just a matter of a few feet left or right on the same concrete slab. In other cases, the blue tee can be quite far behind the red one, or in a completely different location. The red ones are generally easier to find for those that have not played the course before. Check out the map.

Ball golf greens (around the hole) play OB, and this is particularly a challenge for me because I don't have the best control on the planet and the greens are right in my driving range. My score is usually artificially inflated by at least 3 strokes per round due to landing on the greens. On many occasions, you can land in birdie zone, but because you are on the green, you have to take a penalty and back up 30 feet, making the '3P save' even more difficult.

While the front 9 on the course presents a great variety in short game, the back 9 is where the course opens itself up to a few considerably longer drives, starting right at hole 10. The back of the course is a collection of generally flat or uphill holes that zig-zag their way up the hill in a much less imaginative fashion than the front. These terraces were originally part of a Japanese internment camp and housing bunks were constructed on them; knowing their history keeps it a little more interesting in my opinion. Keep an eye behind you on a few of the holes as there are some hidden (especially at night) farther blue tees.

Crowds can sometimes become an issue at this course. Monday nights are when the weekly occurs, and I suggest participating in this event or choosing another time to play. Toward the end of the night, groups tend to swell to larger numbers and it can slow things down. Be prepared to skip a hole or have some patience. Crowds and proximity to other players are really my only con at the course.

Nonetheless, this is a great course with a blue collar crowd and a laid back vibe. Being open until 9:30PM makes this the only venue within about 30 miles for night golf. Our continued interest is essential to it's existence, and it is well worth the visit. With precision birdies for advanced players and very fair par 3 holes for the recreational player, this course is a great visit for golfers of all levels.
