Great Course, In Theory 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The tee pads and course signs were very nice as was the layout of the course. Parking was very close to the first tee. The Course itself had great views to the baskets, and hole 6, the signature hole, was very nice

Cons:

The course seemed to have a propensity for too many water holes, as we lost 3 disks. The baskets were not what I would have expected from a course with excellent tee pads and signs. The walk from holes 16 to 18 was approximately the same as the walk from holes 1 to 9. Hole 17 was blocked by a building that had just been built.

Other Thoughts:

Over all a good course, but it was a 40 minute drive, and was (in my opinion) overrated.

Cons:

no cons really just the usual park issues with sharing space.

Other Thoughts:

nice challenge....lots of shots used here...i enjoy it every time i come here.

Quandry 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

19 holes in a multi use park. Several good holes...2, 7, 9...in particular. Tees, tee signs (with bag holder bench), and baskets were all in great shape. White baskets with number plates very visible. Several open holes to work on rollers.

Cons:

No next tee signs, only signs showing where the longs are on some holes. Course is basically intuitive but is kind of jammed into a small area, so headed to incorrect tee a couple times. I like the use of the walking path as OB on several holes, HOWEVER I don't like USING the walking path on so many holes. Not sure what else the designer could have done, but if course gets any kind of foot traffic could be very dangerous. The 10th basket in the B position is way too close to the 11th tee.

Other Thoughts:

Was kind of torn on this review, part of me wanted to give it a 4 due to the excellent use of the creek on the front 9 and the aforementioned good holes. I also thought about giving it a 2...so I landed in the middle with the 3. Probably not a destination course, but it's a fun play.

A grand time in St. Mary's 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- There are concrete teepads, and many holes have a longer tee location. In addition, most of the holes have alternate pin locations.
- Tee signs include a map of hole with an arrow pointing to the next tee. A blue screw on the pole below the sign indicates basket location (A, B, or C) on holes with multiple placements.
- Course is in a large multi-use park, and most of the course is mowed. Holes 2-9 play in and around the woods and are somewhat wild, but the undergrowth is not thick or especially tall.
- There is a good mix of wooded and more open holes, with water coming into play on a few holes.

Cons:

- A few of the fairways run close to other holes (4 and 7, 12 and 18), so use caution. There are also blind tee shots on 3, 4, 10, and 1 (depending on basket location), so scout ahead or use a spotter to be safe.
- Because it's a multi-use park, including a walking trail that parallels some of the holes, you may need to wait on pedestrians at times

Other Thoughts:

At the time of this review, the aerial course map posted on this site is no longer correct. Holes 7, 8, 14, and 16 on the map have been eliminated, and 5 new holes have been added. New holes 13-16 follow the perimeter of the park counter-clockwise and 17 tees off by the miniature golf course and plays into the small woods between the cemetery and tennis courts. Holes 17 and 18 on the posted map are now 18 and 19.

The red tees and posted pars are geared toward newer players, but the water hazards and length of some of the holes will present a big challenge for many recreational and novice players. Intermediate and advanced players should have a lot of birdie opportunities.

Family Friendly Rating - 2.5
PROS: The park has a big playground and a miniature golf course. There are a few spots that would be difficult with a stroller, but I think it's possible. It's pretty easy walking, also, though the new holes mentioned above have added quite a bit of distance.
CONS: The course is set up in 2 loops, but you do go quite a distance from the car at certain points on the course. There is likely to be poison ivy in the wooded section of the course, so keep an eye on your kids if they're walking or playing the course with you. Water comes into play on a few holes, which could result in some wet discs for young players starting out. Some of the holes will be too long for very young players to enjoy.

Review of the new layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Solid variety of both open and wooded holes
- Course is very well laid out
- Well taken care of

Overall, this is an outstanding course and well worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. It was very recently redesigned, with a number of holes altered and lengthened. All holes have very well laid concrete teepads, and the baskets are very new Discraft Chainstars which catch very well. While the signage is currently lacking, it is in the process of being ordered, and looks very nice. As such, I'm including it here.

Cons:

- Could use some additional shot selection, specifically holes that force a left to right shot
- Some holes play near walking paths which can cause delays due to other patrons

As the course is very well laid out, there's not a lot to complain about. However, it could use holes that force right handers to play from left to right. There are opportunities to do so, however there are very few times where it's really forced on the player. That added dimension/difficulty would be very welcomed. Additionally, and even playing on a Saturday morning/afternoon, there are several holes that play over/near walking paths, so you definitely need to be mindful of other park-goers.

Other Thoughts:

On the whole, the redesign makes this course very enjoyable, and even without what I would call a very minor complaint, that is the lack of forced left to right holes, there's very little to complain about here. The GMDGC has done a phenomenal job getting the city involved and invested in the course, and that partnership clearly shows in the finished product.

Seems like it might stay fresh 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Loaded with variety, the Grand Miami course boasts 18+1 twenty-four chain DGA baskets, good, flush (almost all, level) concrete tees and basic (tall 4x4s painted white, with hole # and distance) tee posts, plus marked mandos, next tee signage, and even an occasional cut tree trunk at the tee to set your bag on. You'll throw distances ranging from a 162 foot downhill ace run to three holes over 400 feet. They've used the elevation, woods and creek to keep things spiced up, and built an elevated basket on a pyramid of landscape timbers on #6 to add a little 'flair'.

You will need to shape accurate lines left, straight, and right to shoot well. Control is a must in the spring, with its extra water hazards in the collection bottoms and spillways, plus the fast and deep creeks near 7 & 8. You'll want to let 'er rip off the top of the sledding mound on 13, then jump back to control on the double mando 14. And if you use the newly installed walking trail as OB, you'll have more than the stream to keep you in check. There's a lot to like about this course. With few other courses in the immediate area, I'd say they did a good job designing this one to keep it fun, and not overly demanding.

There's a pro and a con to all the other activities in this multi-use park, though. It's nice to have other attractions (mostly a large number of ball fields and their traditional amenities), but...

Cons:

The new walking trail shares space with the course on holes 5, 7, 11 & 15, and there are other holes where an overzealous throw or a tree kick could endanger someone. It's particularly dangerous on the already tricky, tight, left to right hole 7 (with the creek left and long...lost my Verdict in there trying to anny around). I've seen this before: disc golf goes in with a nice design, then the park doubles up on the usage of the space. A little coordination could make these situations better, but hopefully it works safely. The other possible danger zones I noted were throwing so close to the outfield fence on hole 1, and the possibility of a big bomber throwing blindly up the hill on 12 and reaching the 13th tee.

At least twice (holes 9 & 11), the listed hole distances, and what is marked on the posts, has been greatly lengthened.

For the most part, the course flows smoothly around the space, with the big con being the exception of the long, long walk back around the soccer field after 16.

Other Thoughts:

It's probably not a huge deal most of the year, but in the spring, after a series of rainy days, there are actually extra water hazards on 2, 11 & 16 from 'ponding' (the latter two messy enough to change the 'best' line of play), and I could visualize the 10th tee being underwater from time to time. But no matter when you can visit, this is actually a fun course for the Recreational to Intermediate disc golfer, and it seems like it has enough variety to keep from getting 'stale' even after a lot of rounds here. Not that it needed it for the locals, of course, but for the traveling course baggers like me, I drew up a basic map.

Practice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

With few courses in area Grand Miami provides many the opportunity experience a decent disc golf course.
Concrete tee pads are plus and new baskets are great.
Can see all but two baskets from tee.
Current basket positions provide for a great ace race
Good use of limited park property

Cons:

Short course with very little challenge
Primarily a park for baseball/soccer and course plays around scrap areas of park.
No signage to speak of but you don't really need them.

Other Thoughts:

In the current configuration you can play the course with a putter and midrange disc. The course takes advantage of the area and terrain available efficiently with no impact on other park activities. This course is currently undergoing renovation and ultimately with increase length and provide options for basket locations. The course has potential to be a real gem.

Nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice concrete tee pads
-Great use of the natural terrain
-Flags on most baskets
-Variety of shots (although mostly short)
-Practice bucket is always nice
-Nice multi-use park

Cons:

-Could use better signage, at least it has the bare minimum number and distance
-Navigation is relatively intuitive, except in a couple places (Hole 17 especially)
-Needs some benches and trashcans
-Broken glass in some areas

Other Thoughts:

Overall a nice course to play. It was a nice sunny Sunday morning/afternoon when I played and was quite enjoyable. The park the course is located in is very nice in general. Although I wouldn't like to be there when all the fields are in use at once.

For me, the course plays relatively short with a few opportunities to open up and rip, but there is a chance here and there. Very enjoyable round, I didn't find that the water came into play on any holes (unless you have really terribly aim)

I'm glad I made the trek to check out the course, and would encourage any other discer to check it out.

Cons:

Water! (watch out for losing a disc!)

Other Thoughts:

I must say pulling in I wasn't expecting much, but this was a very nice course. Hole 13? I believe was a really cool bomber from atop a hill, with the previous hole having you ascend it. Water comes into play quite often in the form of canals, creeks and a lake. Lots of terrain, and really interesting holes keep you guessing. I was impressed and surprised to find this little gem.

I used a variety of throws and discs on this course.

The course has 4-5 holes that are heavily wooded. Several long bomber wide open holes. several holes set under nice mature trees to throw around. Some holes are downhill or uphill, just a lot of variety.
the flags on the basket are a nice touch.

Cons:

T-Signs would be nice.
Basket 16 to T-pad 17 is a long walk.
A info board and park map would be great

Other Thoughts:

Really enjoy playing this course.

Pros:

Challenging course, baskets gets changed very often, good mix of long, short and tight holes. Quick course, does have random doubles on Thursdays, and handicap singles Sunday morning. Good parking.

Cons:

Surrounded by a canal and a river so it's easy to loose a disc to the water, also a pond on hole 3 can eat your discs as well. Holes 4, 7-11 can be very muddy and slick when there is heavy rain. Quite a bit of high brush that needs chopped down, makes finding disc difficult. Mandos were put in this year, kinda disagree wit 7's mando.

Other Thoughts:

Tee signs would be nice. Park does have people walking riding bikes in the woods every now and again, people fishing right on the 3's fairways, and had a kid park his moped on one of the tee pads when I was playing. So maybe some caution flying disc area signs would be nice also.

Beautiful course with much potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I drove to this course from Troy (Ohio) and it was well worth the trip. My first game at this course was on doubles night, which worked out great since I didn't know anything about the layout. Ended up playing a very fun round with a great group of guys.

The course is a good mix of open and wooded holes. Three quarters of the course is fairly short, even on some of the open holes. There are some elevation changes, but only 2-3 that are really noticeable. The course makes very good use of the area that it's in, considering the amount other sports fields in the park.

Cons:

Since this is a fairly new course, I'd rather call these "suggestions for improvement" rather than "cons".

1. The holes definitely need well made signs. There are quite a few OBs that I wouldn't have known about without playing doubles with some locals my first time here.

2. Another reason for good signage would be to show where the next hole is in comparison to the hole you're on. There are several holes that have you backtracking from the basket backwards to the next tee. It can get pretty confusing. Hole 17 is a great example of this, as it took me a few minutes to find when I played the course alone.

3. The course is beautiful, but there seems to be a lot of what I'd call "debris". I'm not sure where it come from, but I cam across quite a bit of bottles, paper, etc as a played. Most of it is in the wooded area. Maybe a good course of action would be to add trash cans in that area.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely worth the drive, especially if you live north of Dayton. It takes me 40 minutes from Troy, and I can see myself making the trip often. I think in the next few years this course is going to see improvements and growth, and become one of the better courses in the area. The local players really care about the course, and it shows.

Pros:

Lots of Diversity
Good for any skill level
Clean, mowed and well taken care of
Good mix of shot types, Bombs and technical shots, elevation, creek comes into play, and wooded to open.
Signs that point the way to the next hole
High fun factor

Cons:

Advanced players my find it a little short, especially the early, wooded, technical holes.
Lost my favorite disc!
Can be a little tough to navigate the earlier holes

Other Thoughts:

Looking at the search map on this site I see that this is an area with not a lot of options when it comes to Disc Golf. It's good that they have this place.

I had a lot more fun at this course then I thought I would when I first pulled up. It's bigger than it looks. It's located in a park that looks like it has a lot going on besides Disc Golf. I didn't have any problems with traffic when I was there but I would bet on a nice day in the summer there are probably a lot of other non-disc golfing people to watch out for.

The first few holes wrap around a hill, around a pond and over a field filled with giant dirt piles. Not sure why the dirt piles are there but I hope they stay, I've never thrown around man made 10 foot tall dirt mounds, it was fun, definitely something different and new. The course then goes into the a fairly small patch of woods but they definitely make the most of of it. The holes in here are small but a lot of fun and technical. This is the part where I got turned around a bit, even with the signs I got a little confused about where to go next. It's nothing serious though you'll definitely be able to find your way around. After you get out of the woods you play an uphill hole and then a really fun bomber off the top of a pretty large hill. Then you finish the course out with a series of open shots with some tall trees to throw around.

The thing that stuck out about this course to me was its diversity. They definitely change it up on you as it goes on. It's especially impressive when you look at the land they had to work with. It's not great Disc Golf land but they really took advantage of the spots that had potential.

Really good park but it's kinda far away from any other really good parks to combine it with on a road trip so I probably wouldn't recommend a long drive just to play this one. If your a local however hit it up. It's a lot of fun. And if you find a red Nuke in the stream, you don't have to return it, just give it a good home. It likes to go out for a toss at least twice a week and feed it plenty of dirt and chains. It will be good to you if your good to it.

New design: This course is awesome! Pro pads have been added to most holes. 3 pin locations on every hole. Short holes in the woods have been removed or reconfigured. 4 new holes offer the needed distance to bring this course up to par for advanced skill players. Great use of elevation, water, woods and O.B. A must play if you are in the area!

Cons:

Other Thoughts:

This course plays tougher then expected. New basket placements added the needed distance and the pyramid basket added another degree of difficulty.
