A Well Established and Much Loved City Park Course

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Excellent city park layout with two sets of tees and baskets - and multiple basket positions

+ Excellent signage with color coded baskets, signs and posts for the two main layouts (purple and orange), along with bolts in the teeposts indicating which current basket position. Large, flush, level concrete teepads

+ large practice area with multiple baskets and picnic tables, signboard

+ Well-designed for a largely open section of this massive urban park: takes advantage of rolling hills, trees to create doglegs and protect baskets

+ Good mix of left and right turning holes

+ After a relatively open and slightly sloping holes, #5 brings you into much deeper woods and a lot of elevation changes. Holes #6 and #12 feature big drops from tee to green. The middle holes alternate between relatively common park style conditions and more challenging thicker woods with elevation. The variety makes the course interesting, although the closing holes are themselves pretty routine, with #17 being spiced up a bit with a raised basket on the purple layout

Cons:

- A few of the early holes run side by side and there's some risk of incoming discs. This multiuse park includes walking trails that sometimes border the holes, and the large open area of the first five holes attracts games of catch, etc.

Other Thoughts:

~ There are two other complete 18 hole courses at Druid Park (Forest Drive and Hillway). But with the two baskets, two tees and multiple basket placements, Legacy itself has plenty of replayability

~ By combining with the other courses, Legacy features a mind boggling 20 layouts on uDisc, and only a few of them appear to be just for certain events. I played with some regulars, and they explained how they put together 18 hole loops from the various courses all the time

~ Lots of love and attention from the local club, which means lots of use. Probably pretty crowded on summer weekend days

Wonderful City Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 15, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+Very good infrastructure. Two tee pads and two baskets on each hole. Tees are well built and in good shape (minus a leaning short tee pad on hole 5). Baskets are quality Prodigy targets in purple and orange. Excellent tee signs. Short basket moves, long basket (mostly) stays in one place, some have two locations. Not difficult to find your way around.

+Mostly plays through beautiful, rolling, grassy terrain with lots of varied and interesting tree (ex-arboretum land). In the middle of a city without feeling like it's in the middle of a city.

+Excellent use of elevation on the holes, combined with trees, to make for challenging shot shapes. Will definitely require forehand, backhand, hyzer, and anhyzer shot selection.

+None of the holes seemed junky or thrown in there. A few that were memorable or well worth playing again (I particularly liked 3, 5, 8, 10, and 12).

Cons:

-While the mandos do a good job of avoiding obvious safety issues, there are some hiking paths (in the first half in particular) that could have pedestrian concerns, and definitely in nicer weather (I played on a cold, lots-of-snow February Monday).

-Similar to the previous note, holes 13, 14, and 18 all play near/along traffic on Greenspring Dr. The mando on 14 didn't keep my turnover that made the mando from going too far and onto the street.

Other Thoughts:

Locals most commonly play the "Front 18" (Legacy 1-4, Forest Drive 1-9, Legacy 5-9) and "Back 18" (Legacy 10-12, Forest Drive 10-18, Legacy 13-18). This was the way I played them and quite liked it - mixed up the park golf and woods golf in each round.

Some folks have made a deal of the surrounding neighborhoods, but insofar as Legacy is concerned, I really see zero issues. The more "isolated" parts of the course (not really isolated) are close to the Zoo, not anywhere sketchy. Hillway (separate course on-site) definitely has sketchiness concerns.

Park next to hole 1 on the street, between Legacy 1 and 10. Not hard to get a spot on my cold February day but could be tough on a nice spring day.

Lovely layout, former arboretum land 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 23, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

My review is only for the main Legacy course. Have not yet played the X holes. The parkland is very lovely with rolling hills and enough trees for a challenge but no oppression. No tunnel shots on the main course barring possibly no. 4, but that fairway is pretty wide. You may have a basket crowded by or behind trees, but you are not fighting trees all the way from teepad to green. I am speaking of play from the forward teepad. Several steep hills to throw up. If you are not a strong driver, you have to think about what your strategy will be to minimize your strokes. It's very well-maintained (pleasantly surprised since this is inner-city Baltimore), and I think must have new signage at the teepads. I had zero trouble navigating this course. In March 2019, I came during a somewhat busy time and didn't feel unsafe. There are some feel-good holes: No. 3 lets you air out your drive, even though OB pavement is to the right. Nos. 6 and 12 are blind downhillers where gravity will give you a long drive if you don't put the drive immediately into the turf. No. 9 will be a birdie hole (for sure) for good disc golfers, though it is very easy to go OB on the roadway. Since I almost made par (and I am not a good golfer), this is a good hole to end your play on. I did play holes 10-18 and then 1-9 to avoid some of the crowd when I arrived. I do like that order, but have also played the traditional 1-18 order. I'll be playing forward tee and forward basket (purple) for a long time, but the orange baskets (far) have multiple placements that offer a ton of variety to the good disc golfer looking for more challenge.

Cons:

You park your car on the street which might be a challenge if really busy. There are some isolated parts of this course (even the main part) that you want to be sure will be okay for you. Go when the park is busy in good daylight. Some holes are really close to the street, so be careful that you don't throw into the street. Especially those along Greenspring (nos. 13 and 14).

Other Thoughts:

I understand that the land used to be the Baltimore Arboretum. You can tell that. It's lovely. And so well-maintained. The nearby Zoo offers something else to do if this is a day trip. Of course, downtown Baltimore also has the National Aquarium, Fells Point, an Orioles game (during the baseball season), the art museum, the Peabody Museum, Enoch Pratt Library, the fabulous B&O Museum, etc. etc. Balto is a tough town, but it still is Charm City!!

Great Course, some poor etiquette 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course, well maintained. Some holes in the woods, others in an open field with trees. Multiple targets per hole giving more options for multiple rounds.

Cons:

Most of the players here are great. Sometimes there will be a group of 6 people, playing 2 discs each on multiple cups per hole, big group and slow play. They never offered to let anyone play through and took longer per shot than you would be penalized at any event.

Also people changing the course and cutting in front of you to throw multiple discs (again poor etiquette). If you want to mash up the course, that is totally cool as long as you cut behind the people on the actual pattern.

Other Thoughts:

Guys, act like you have played before. Show some etiquette and have fun. 95% of the people on this course are great, but the 5% make it feel weird. I get they have sponsored swag and expensive gear, hurray! Let faster groups play through, like everyone else.

Not My Favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty wide open play, so it would be difficult to lose a disc here. I'm sure those intimately familiar with the course really like the fact that there are multiple baskets per hole (I did not, see my comment in "cons"). Some pretty good elevation challenges which is refreshing after playing flatter courses.

Cons:

The course has no *actual* parking, so we parked along the street. This seems to be the way to do it, as several other players did the same.

I haven't been playing long, so I was a bit surprised that I didn't see a par rating on any sign. Is every hole a Par 3? Seems unlikely, especially when considering the longer baskets. As such, for the score-keeper app, we chose to use our judgement and allocate pars as we saw fit. Turns out every one is a par 5 and I shot -32. That's a joke. Many are legitimate Par 3's, but some, we thought, were probably 4, and made them such.

Our biggest challenge came from navigating the course. We even had a friend with us who had played the course before, and we still had problems with determining which basket we were shooting for, and with course flow. On the other courses I have played, if the next tee pad wasn't obvious, there were signs indicating direction. No such thing at this course. As such, we found ourselves walking from pad to pad on a couple of occasions.

Other Thoughts:

With repeated play, this could be a good course, but for new players, who drove from southern NJ for a disc golf day in Baltimore, we were underwhelmed.

Urban park, flexible course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 27, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Based on reviews here and my limited experience here, there's a strong DG community here - probably the busiest course I've ever played and that was during a drizzly weekday midafternoon with storms looming. When we arrived to course, we were welcomed by an older gentleman who proceeded to "indoctrinate" us to the course and gave us a hand drawn map. He also gave us some throwing tips after seeing my less-than-stellar drive on the first hole (in my defense, it was my first time throwing in 2 years).
The course flows through grassy park with interspersed trees. Several holes are blind. I imagine that I could play a slightly different course each time with two concrete tee boxes ("metal" & "wood") and two targets at each hole (I think each hole had two targets, may be mistaken) and multiple hole locations.
We did not have time to play the 9 X holes in the woods.

Cons:

Sometimes not clear where target is, though there is a map at the "metal" tee and a system identifying which hole placement the basket is in using a pipe clamp on the sign post. And finding next tee not always clear. See Links/Files tab here for course maps. Road (OB) potentially in play on a few holes for errant tossers.
Can be crowded with DGers and others walking through. Given location and activity in/around park, I'll be mindful when I play.

Other Thoughts:

Update - this has become one of our go to courses this season. We generally play the "metal" (short) tees to the yellow baskets which are in the longest position but easiest to see because the old Mach5 baskets blend in. I haven't found distance and par info for several of these holes. I've come to really like this course. Given it's park setting, it offers as much variety as is possible, takes advantage of elevation and obstacles. There are good challenges but also several birdie opportunities.

Navigational Nightmare 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

New X-holes add variety ("X" holes are marked as X (9 total), OH (3 total), and NX (6 total)). Crude but effective hand painted maps at the X tees help you locate the many blind baskets. Nice folf tips on the main course tee signs. Lots of irregulars hang out at the start and can provide advice.

Cons:

There is no obvious flow to the course, particularly with the addition of the many new X holes. The main course is sorely lacking in Next Tee signs at the baskets and hole numbering on the baskets, though these have been placed on the 18 new X holes.
The main course has two tee pads and two baskets per hole, confusingly called Wood and Metal. There are up to 5 pin positions per hole and the view from a tee pad typically takes in 4 or more baskets, unnumbered and possibly not for that tee. The intended baskets are often a blind shot. A vague system of hose clamps on a pole is intended to provide guidance.

Other Thoughts:

If you backtrack from the #2 X hole basket to the "More Holes" sign you can follow well marked trails to OH holes #1 - 3 and you will emerge near the tee for X hole #3. Walk up the paved road to reach the alternate X hole #3 tee and further up to the primary X #3 tee.

The Sword of Damocles tree branch overhanging tee #15 creates a most unusual tee shot as conventional use of the pad is denied.

There are beaucoup opportunities for Black Aces here, if you're into that sort of thing. (each black ace is 2 off your lifetime total of aces LOL)

With the creation of excellent new courses like Turkey Hill the bar gets raised and old standard courses like this one get downrated if they don't get improved. There is a very active local club here and the course has many old quirks but also new perks. It's best to play your first couple rounds here with a local to learn the layout.
Perhaps this course should be split into two separate 18 hole courses. Either way a big improvement to the on-course navigation aids is needed to balance all the fine work put into the new X holes.

Decent Course in sketchy area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 9, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This has been one of my favorite courses since playing in 2010, It is always well kept, baskets move around every few weeks, good replay value and a feel good course after a bad round elsewhere, I normally would schedule a round at Druid .IMO this place has the best disc golf vibe in MD. played here many times and often hang out after rounds to putt and socialize with other players.

Cons:

I haven't been back since 5/2014 when a van with 4 black males drove into the parking lot and ran up on me and another player at the putting basket with guns. We both outran the attackers but had our disc golf bags taken, we both had our keys in our gear and the other player also had his wallet in his bag and just cashed his paycheck. The group was caught about 2 weeks later and prosecuted. This is a rougher part of the city and I have always been on edge around this area. Our incident happen so fast its hard to hold that against the course.

Other Thoughts:

be on lookout for non disc golf players on the fields, be smart and safe! I would consider playing this course with a small group of people, or going on the random doubles events.

Druid Hill 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Even though I'm in the county, Druid is the place I drive to and play at least twice a week. It's the best course in the Baltimore area, IMO.

- Multiple tee pads and baskets. The baskets get changed pretty regularly, so there's always a new challenge out there. Concrete tee pads are in great shape.
- Great place to introduce new players to the game. It has plenty of opportunities to score for better players, but is manageable enough for beginners to not get them discouraged.
- Few holes where you can get out and bomb it.
- Island green on the 18th is an option, but fun to play and has the potential to be the difference maker in a close competitive round.
- For the most part the people you come across are some of the nicest you can meet in Baltimore. Lots of older guys that have been playing the course for years that make the course great.
- Lots of practice baskets and practice space.
- Utilizes the elevation well for some uphill/downhill shots.
- 9 "X-holes" in the woods for added challenge.
- Signage on most holes and indicator for which position the basket is in.
-Parking is in between the first and last holes of each 9.

Cons:

- Quite often very large groups (5+) play and can slow the course down, but generally not too bad.
- I've never had any problems in the park, but people come and chill in the back part, just can seem a little shady at times.
- X-holes are a little overgrown.

Other Thoughts:

Druid is the best course in the area to hang out and meet lots of DGers of all skill levels in the area. Lot of guys that are willing to share knowlege and help out newer players. Lots of variety with the different tees and pin positions.

A couple of the holes when in the longest pin positions could probably be par 4s.

Play a round here if you're in the area!

Diamond in the Rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 4, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is simply amazing! Start off with the community, great DGers! They hold a "Triples" match play every thursday. Great fun, great throwers.

There are three practice baskets located at the beginning/end of the front 9. Great for when the course gets crowded.

The course is a great mix of touch shots, spike hyzers/anhyzers, bomb drives, technical tunnel shots, and all in between. The course does favor LHBH throwers or RHFH. But I like that. I don't want every basket to be in the natural hyzer path of my disc, no fun in that.

The course also incorporates 9 "X-holes" which are deep in "ungroomed" wooded areas. I do reccommend doing the X-holes but bring a course guide, because it will be next to impossible to navigate, but once you learn, they are great for advanced throwers.

The tee boxes are all concrete or asphalt which make for great accurate run ups, with no busted ankles. There are two fixed positions, the "metals" and the "woods." Woods I find to be the longer, more challenging of the two.

Every basket has multiple pin positions which are changed very often to keep the course ever changing.

A great course.

Cons:

Parking. The parking is an issue, especially during competitions. Car congestion can add insult to injury on a shanked throw on basket #9.

It is in a rough part of town. They talked about "dumpin bodies in Druid" on The Wire. Just don't plan on any night time Glow Disc adventures.

There is an Animal Hospital on the right side of fairway #3. If you bomb a drive and shank right or the wind grabs your disc and it doesn't flip back, you need to call them and set up a time when you can retrieve your disc. Remember to mark all of your discs with a contact of some sorts.

Other Thoughts:

There is talk of clearing out the X holes to make them a groomed, technical addition to the regular 18! I do hope this happens. Also in the works are 18 additional holes on the other side of the road from the entrance. If this happens Druid Hill will be one of the best courses on the East Coast.

Druid Hill Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course has a good variety of holes. Some open fairways, but most have some type of tree obsticle. Couple of holes have elevation gain/losses.

Holes are tightly packed, but not too close.

Baskets seem to rotate from A-B-C locations fairly regularly.

Holes are easy to find and follow.

There are an extra 9 holes (X-Holes) that go through a heavily wooded area. These holes are a nice "change of pace", but can be a little hard to follow.

Front 9 and back 9 start from same location. If one is too crowded, you have the choice to start on the other.

Course usually has players on it. Easy to join with a group if playing alone.

Cons:

No real negatives about the course except that the "A" basket positions tend to be very short. Upside is that the "A" basket positions allow for the possibilities of hole in ones

Most negatives are with the upkeep and non golfers near the course

Have been times where the course can get littered with nasty types of urban trash. Things you don't want to touch or have your disc touch.

Quite often, people (non golfers) will sit in their cars for long periods of time on roads near holes. Can be a little spooky.

Other Thoughts:

Druid Hill Park is a huge urban park that, for the most part, is nicely maintained. There are other activities, like hiking and biking, that can be tied with golf to make it a full day of outdoor activity

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The park is very pretty, with rolling open slopes dotted with majestic trees. The course is well laid out, with little overlap between holes, and relatively intuitive flow from hole/hole. Most holes play differently form each other, so there is no feel of sameness.

Cons:

Tees get muddy in wet weather. Limited parking.

Other Thoughts:

Most holes are relatively short, and the more open nature of the park means that tree obstacles are usually not a significant challenge. This makes the course a good beginer course.

Several years ago the course managers extended several of the holes near the central woods region, which put them into a lot of poison ivy. I was pleased this year to see the PI had been eradicated.

Pros:

Concrete tee pads and multiple tees. Multiple basket positions.
Nice amount of obsticles for any level player. Chance of dics loss is there, but very slight unless you need to take a risky shot. holes 18-27 are more isolated, wooded, and interesting (but not on the map)

Cons:

There were tees and baskets everywhere! I always second guessed if I was heading to the right baskets and had to find the next tee. Signs are worn out and many baskets are not labeled. It is one of those courses you have to play numerous times to enjoy it with out confusion.
One of the tees for 7 was painted on the road and very hard to find.
More dogs than people out on the course and a few holes smelled strong of urine. An overflowing trash can of beer greeted guests at hole 1.
Several holes require you to throw across roads, walking paths and towards parked cars.

Other Thoughts:

Course often holds tournaments on the weekends so check the schedule before visiting. Print out the directions to Rockburn just incase the course is too crowded.
(Course is very similar to Ellison Park in Rochester, NY)
