Stony is now on Steroids... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

As with all Metropark courses, it is maintained excellently and has all of the amenities that you could look for.
Dual cement tees, great targets, mowed fairways, scorecards on site, benches at most holes, practice basket, restrooms, alcohol friendliness, trash cans, multiple park activities and most importantly, challenge of play.
Big armed throwers will love Stony's opening six holes, covering 3000+ feet.
Shorter and more technical holes, multiple doglegs, a couple of water hazards and elevation all come in to play. Nice 400' downhill bomb to finish the full 27-hole layout.
After 18 you are brought back to the parking lot, giving you options.
Helpful staff on hand to assist in any non-life threatening situations.
Easy to follow hole-to-hole.

Cons:

Lots of plastic-eating shrubs, grass and shule. A few holes require a spotter. Can and usually does get busy at peak hours. Due to its location, a few random pick-nickers wander on to the course. Some holes run right next to each other creating some tight spots, nothing too bad though. A few long walks between holes, including a very long uphill walk from 27's basket, back to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

The new/altered holes are very welcomed additions to Stony's already outstanding layout. More of an intermediate to advanced course, beginners can still have fun.
With Willow's 24 holes and Kensington's 27, Stony Creek's 24 holes are a sign that the Metropark system has disc golf on its agenda.
$2 a day bag fee/$50 yearly.
$5 car fee/$25 yearly. Yearly passes good at all Metropark locations. Party store at 25mile/Shelby is open early, has plastic and pizza.

Stody Creek Metro Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course is very well kept
-There were benches and pic-kink tables scattered through out the course for breaks
-24 holes!
-mostly open but there is a good variety of wooded holes.
-many challenging fairways with tough angles, this can get frustrating
-good variety of distances with short skill shots but still a lot of chances to bomb it.
-multiple tees

Cons:

You have to pay a couple dollars to play and like $5 to park, it can be expensive for a round of frolf. Other than that the only thing that I did not like was the amount of weeds, I can imagine at the end of summer they are pretty long and hard to find discs in.

Pretty standard, really 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

plays in fairly open terrain, with brush and spotted trees lining the fairways. a couple tunnel shots. i liked the two holes that played under the small canopy of trees - kinda zig zag back and forth...
pro and am cement tees for most holes (when distance dictates). logs for sitting and cans for tossing trash. wooded posts marking hole # and distance, fairly low vandalism.
a nice shot over a small pond is nice for an ace run. actually, a few ace runs exist on this course - some of the holes are quote short (<200 ft.) but length is mixed well throughout.

Cons:

honestly, all the holes blur together - nary a signature hole. not a lot of shade, which was bad on a 90+ degree day. 1 water hazard at least gets the box checked on the scorecard, although it isn't very challenging. overall i came away disappointed.

Other Thoughts:

standard michigan metropark. this plays like almost any other - it makes good use of the land, but nothing spectacular. not terribly difficult, but still offers a good degree of difficulty - i think this would be a good challenge for those beginners that are wanting to branch out. it's a pay to play, so in addition to the metropark pass for your car, you'll have to get a wristband for $2 to play through. if this course was nicer i'd agree. not saying is wasn't kept up, just saying i don't know if the $2 every time would be worth it, especially with the # of other courses in the area.

the buckhorn 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

this course is very well kept, fairways mowed, tees are a good size, level, and not all broken up.
quality baskets are used, none are bent or broken.
nice combo of long wide open holes and short wooded holes, as well as some long tight wooded holes. course is fairly biased to left or right handed players, I had fun practicing my long turnover drives, as well as hyzers, a couple sidearm shots, and a few tomahawks.
water hazards were fair and used well on a couple shorter holes(these may disapear as the ground dries up)

Cons:

If you do miss your line on some of the longer wooded holes and go deep in the woods they are thick, not an easy out(if you can find you disc). This is true of any course but for some reason it seems alot worse here.

Other Thoughts:

crowds were not bad and most people there were polite. Got lucky with the wind knocking down almost all or the mosquitoes and only a few of my putts. Course was worth the fee and worth the 1 hour drive from my house, I will be back the next chance I get.

$5 car entry and $2 charge per disc golfer. Extremely busy!

Other Thoughts:

If I didn't get a scorecard from the guy charging admission, I would not have known were most of the baskets were without having to scout ahead. Getting the scorecard was a big help as it had maps of all the holes on it.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 19, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my home course.
1st 4 holes open fairway pretty straight forward maybe a tree or two to throw around. Then into the woods for some nice ally shots.
#6 is up and over a hill. #14 has pond to cross (only water on the course). Ratteled the chains on my tee shot on 17 (hysershot).#18 dog leg right 19,20 relitivly straight 498,342 respectivly. On 23 you can play 1 of two baskets from the tee one doglegs right with a real tight corridor. and the other doglegs left wide open. if you play left it sets you up for the laidies tee on 24, 597'.
On the right for 24"The Mans Tee" somebody wrote that on the tee pad post for 933'

Cool places to hang out thruoght the couse most with pinic tables tucked in the woods. some creative makeshift ground level tree
forts.

Gets real busy on the weekends go early.
daily pass is 2 dollars, If you don't pay a guy chases you with a golf cart saying "wheres my 2 dollars". Just kidding! haha.

Cons:

Vandels breaking markers. And Trash

Other Thoughts:

Why do people throw there trash every where? I mean really, if you can bring the stuff out there you can bring it back. Aside from the fact there are plenty of trash cans. literally one at every hole!...come on people....

Use every disc in your bag 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 23, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Simply wonderful shot variety and hole design: EXCELLENT mix of hole lengths, with several Ace run/birdie holes, 9 holes over 400' and plenty of variety in between. Wonderful balance of nice open, grip & rip fairways (some with very well placed trees), wooded holes, tight fairways lined with thick brush requiring placement and control, and a few blind holes. Multiple chances to throw hyzers, annies/FH, overhand. Nice rolling terrain comes into play on many holes.

I love the order in which the holes are laid out here. Like a good book, Stony gets you involved early, with holes that are open and inviting, but not too short. Then it throws a few interesting twists your way, mixing in a short wooded hole, followed by a fairly long 6th hole with a winding fairway lined with brushy hazards. The course changes pace frequently to maintain your interest and keep you on your toes, but overall, it gets a bit more intense the further you get into it. A couple of shorter holes give you a breather, before you get to 23 (quite a tricky hole playing to the long basket), and then the big finish. Hope you saved some energy, 'cause Stony's final chapter reads 933' from the long pad. Plays well from hole to hole - never gets boring.

The basics are well in hand: Large concrete tees pads, decent baskets, well defined fairways, tee signs w/dist, score cards w/map, pencils, friendly old guy in a golf cart to collect course fees. Everything is generally in pretty good shape thanks to pay to play, and the course just has a better vibe than it did a couple of years ago.

Navigation is pretty straight forward for the most part, with occaisional Next Tee signs to help out first timers. Gets confusing in a couple of spots, but a quick look at the score card/map should keep you on track.

Cons:

Not much to hate here, so these are nit-picky, but true:
- Vanadlism has claimed a few tee signs.
- Water holes should be nice, not nasty.
- Only 10 holes have dual tees.
- Would've been nice if it had a big hill, (but it does make decent use of some rolling terrain).
- Blind holes can = lost discs when playing solo, spotters not a bad idea for some holes.

Other Thoughts:

There's no denying Stony Creek (now formally known as "The Buckhorn") is an excellent course. If you don't live in the area, Stony goes well with nearby Riverbends (7 miles away), or Addison Oaks (15 miles away) to make a great day trip if you like to get away to play different courses.

I've been playing Stony, Kensington, and Hudson Mills for years, and the sad fact is: pay to play has really cleaned Stony and Kensington up - BIG TIME. Yeah, it's brought an element of "authority" onto the course, but c'mon; Police State - really? Since they've began charging $2/day, I've never been hassled by the park presence at any of the Metro Parks. Look how bad Stony and Kensington were a couple of years ago. Both those courses would be totally trashed today if not for some old guy on a golf cart. Long as he's out there, maybe they should give him a cooler full of water and Gatorade selling for a buck or two.

Still a good course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is really fun to play and learn the game. You get a real 24 hole course that is tough to break even par. Concrete pads and Chainstar baskets are in great shape. The holes flow very well to the next tee as well. You get a chance to air it out with most holes 300+ feet away. There is also an even mix of open, woody, and hilly holes to try out every shot you got. Worth the $2 to play. They've been making improvements to the course which will make it even better.

Cons:

Sometimes this course gets crowded and you got to wait on a few groups. Punks with nothing better to do like to hang there and destroy tee signs, trees, garbage cans and picnic tables. It is pretty sad how they trash the place. Hopefully the pay to play fee drives them outta there.

The tee signs are below average but that probably has to do with the idiots who keep pulling them out. First timers should grab a scorecard map by the parking lot to find the baskets that are far and unseeable from the tee.

Not much else to really complain about here.

Other Thoughts:

The first 4 holes give you a chance to warm up and blast them down there 300+ feet with only a few trees to avoid.

The next nine takes you through the woods where it gets a little tight and you need to be accurate or end up in some thick brush.

From there your at #14 and half way home and you get back into some more open holes to bring out your drivers. The next six are long with the exception of one little 200ish footer.

Back you go into the woods to play a few until you get to hole 24. If you still have an arm, you're gonna need it for this 900 foot finale. The best I've done is a +2 on this par 3, but I don't play everyday either.

Give this course a try. It might not be the BEST in Michigan, but it is a top 3 for me.

UPDATE: AUG 19, 2010 :Stony Creek rocked by severe storms and wind. Many trees damaged or destroyed on the course. At least 6 holes have been altered by this storm that produced an F1 tornado a few miles down the road. Watch your step and look up for hanging debris.

Update: June 2011

Course in great shape. New ticket booth installed this spring. Rumors of course expansion this fall. Law enforcement spottings near holes 5-8. Look out!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love playing here. They offer both pro and am tee's. There's challenges no matter if you're a beginner or a pro. They keep the courses well maintained for the most part, the tee's are in great shape.

Cons:

Yes it does get muddy after it rains which seems fairly normal at any course. Keep skeeter repellent on you since you DO have to play near and over water that festers with skeeter larve.

Other Thoughts:

I'm thankful that they charge $2.00 per person to play and $50.00 IF you don't already have a pass to get in. To many people have been going there, kicking over the garbage cans, making a mess, and going there to not play, but hang out in the woods.. If you play there often you know alot of the people aren't going there to play and they're "toking" up space. I hope that not only do they keep charging, I hope they raise it to detur more of the trash that has been infesting my throwing space.

Pros:

Course is well laid out. Provides a variety of holes. Tee pads are long and wide. Minimal leaves on the course. Very challenging layout. The last 7 holes are the hardest.

Cons:

Poor signage. Expensive to play ($7 buxs)

Other Thoughts:

This was a great course to play. The varied length and terrain of the holes made this course very interesting. My only problem is, if I am paying 7 bucks ($5 for car $2 for wrist band) to play I expect the course to be "perfect" or near perfect. This was not the case. The course does have signage, but the signs only tell you the distance and # of the hole. Many of the holes are blind shots and it would have saved me a lot of running around to simply know if the hole doglegs to the right or left or if it is straight ahead. I have no problem "paying to play" but the money needs to be put into improving the course.

Pros:

Very fun and challenging course. Wide variety of hole layouts (from wide and open to narrow and wooded, both dirt and grass fairways, good average hole length). Brush and terrain very well maintained. Tees are solid and well kept. Has both long drive and ace-able holes. Friendly frequenters.

Cons:

Now Charging for Disc Golf! Minor pest annoyances. Vandalism (e.g. removal of signs) at a few points. Some muddy patches when recently rained on. Can get crowded.

Other Thoughts:

Bring your A game! (as well as pesonal refreshments) Unsure whether the disc-eating bushes and swamp were a pro or con. Wind (variable). Teamplay will help for discers lacking versatility. They have done a bit to the course (especially if you are going off the pictures) in 2009. They have added many more trees and taken out a few. Its good to know that SOME of the money they are getting is being put to good use. It is definitely worth a trip to [pay and] play.

Pros:

- Design has MUCH variety testing every trick shot you have and more.
- Well maintained (sort of), new work has been done to clear much rough and large dead trees from the course, altering the course drastically but making it cleaner.
- Cement tees, signs, scorecards, bulletin board, restrooms.
- Water hazard
- Has several long bomber holes and ends with a 900+ ft hole.

Cons:

- FEES
- Police state
- Sandy tee pads need swept a lot more often (hand broom will save you several strokes).

Other Thoughts:

If you haven't played here lately, you will barely recognize it as so much has changed, mostly in the way of tree and bush removal. It plays a handful of strokes easier by default.
