South of the (Minnesota) River Gem...

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 3, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

--Mixture of open and wooded holes
--The woods will kill you, but you won't lose your discs in them.
--Short/long tees plus short/long baskets offer a variety of levels of play
--Free to play
--Meaningful use of elevation on almost every hole
--Outstanding, clear signage
--Well maintained for the most part.

Cons:

--On a public school campus, and closed during the hours when school is in session (afternoon/weekend play is open)
--Many holes lack trash cans, and worse, people are piling up their trash where cans apparently used to be
--No alcohol policy, reasonable for a school, is ignored based on the trash present.

Other Thoughts:

I went to play 18, and played 36 in 95+ degree weather because it was honestly just that fun.

You start out next to a parking lot on the side lot of a middle school with a rather dull uphill shot to your choice of short and long tees and baskets. Hole 2 continues to lull you into thinking this is just another junior high course, and then #3 drops you down a hill and into the woods, from which you will not escape until #16. My dear hobbitses, you should always stay on the path, but despite the best of intentions, it won't be long before you stray. So, to mix metaphors, into to the woods you go like you were Sondheim himself...

Tee boxes are concrete, and just starting to fill with the detritus of early fall. Does anyone else carry a small whisk broom in their backpack? Not a bad idea here, seasonally dependent, if you're going to uncork from the tees.

Not that you have to. Even the longest options make for a relatively manageable course lengths. Holes that go up significantly in length often jump from par 3 to 4 as well. The main difference for me with the dual baskets had much more to do with approach angles and guardian trees than they did with length.

Ground conditions are a mixture of dirt, chips, and occasionally grass, draped across a roller coaster of small hills. The woods are thick and treacherous, but fair, and not so obscured that your discs will easily disappear. I hit only 3-4 fairways in the wooded section, but I didn't lose a disc in 36 holes, nor did I come across the lost discs of others (I'm looking at you, Crown College!).

I suggest that you review and be familiar with the appearance of poison ivy. It has obviously been mitigated alone the fairway edges, but if you get in too deep (and you will), there is some present. I recommend good skin coverage and washing your hands with a dedicated poison ivy cleanser on the completion of the round. I did so, and had no problems.

By hole 9, I had used every shot shape I knew and invented a few more. By the time I emerged on 16, my head was so full of woulda/coulda/shouldas that I knew I was going to go around the horn again. I'll be back later this week for another shot at it.

Pros:

- Shot variety
- Challenge
- Good tees and baskets
- Easy to navigate

Cons:

- Few opportunities to use distance drivers

Other Thoughts:

Very good course. Most holes are challenging, but not unfair. Some of the holes are open, but for the most part, it's in the woods. Real par 4s that require set up shots. There's only one time where you can throw further than 350, so distance drivers won't get much use.

Pros:

This course is very enjoyable. It has a great set up with long and short baskets as well as pins. When playing from the blue pads to the blue baskets the course is pretty fun it's challenging but not ridiculous as many advanced players still should shoot par or under.
The tee pads our marked blue or red and super easy to locate
I like the variety it offers with both pads and pins. It has a few open shots and a lot of technical wooded lines my type of disc golf. I love the fact it offers both accuracy is the main key here. Good elevation shots for example hole 4. When playing from the blues there's a couple par 4s. The layout is super easy to follow a navigation was fairly simple. There's a very nice kiosk with a map that has everything marked out as well as practice basket
Bathroom at start of course
Huge parking lot

Cons:

Some people won't like the woods section, and there's some ugly spots if you get off the fairways of underbrush. Honestly there's not many cons here to me and you can tell the course has been taken care of. Just dosen't have that super wow factor or any real signature holes
Course is closed on school days until 2:30

This course surprised me and is for sure worth the visit

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of open, wooded, long, short, left, right and elevation. Though more are shorter and technical versus long bombers.
Two tees and two baskets on every hole is a huge plus. This allows for challenging holes for beginners to professional level players.

Cons:

The only reason I'm writing this review is because nobody else has mentioned the poison ivy. If you are highly allergic to poison ivy, consider staying away. Patches of ivy are all over the wooded portion of the course. Maybe I'm misidentifying the stuff, but I'm 95% sure its the good stuff!

As everybody else stated, course is on school grounds and has limited time to play.
Course is pulled in winter.

Other Thoughts:

I don't care if you like this review or not. I wrote it to let people know there is a lot of poison ivy at the course.

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is set up on the grounds of the outskirts of a middle school and some surrounding parkland. There are 2 baskets on every single hole and 2 tee pads on all but a few holes. Let's start with the pins. Two per hole with the silver Mach 3's as the shorts and I don't remember what type they were, but the blue powder coated ones as the longs. All 36 of these are in phenomenal shape and caught great. The blue powder coated ones stand out nicely in differentiating between the two locations. Awesome set up here with these. Now on to the tees. These, again, are all top notch. They are plenty long enough, grip nicely and are all level. Another added touch is the engraved hole number on the front of each as well as the red or blue on this front section designating which tee pad it is. Never seen this before but is one of the best tee pad features I've ever seen. If it's a shared tee the front section is split in half and half red, half blue. Again, great job on these. The flow of the course is so easy to follow. As a matter of fact every basket, I mean EVERY basket, short and long, have a next tee sign with an arrow to the next hole. There are also large wood posts with next tee signs on most holes too. At least the wooded holes, as it's pretty self explanatory on the more open holes. If that wasn't good enough it has next tee arrows on the tee signs as well. Basically it's almost impossible to get lost or even turned around here. The elevation here is used flawlessly. There is a solid mix of up and downhill holes both in the open and wooded sections of the course. Speaking of that, there is a good mix of open and wooded. Probably about a third open and the rest wooded. It basically has everything but water hazards. This course can cater to any skill level. We played 2 rounds. Long tees to long baskets and shorts to shorts with me having a 15 shot difference between the two. I'll be back to play shorts/longs and longs/shorts at some point. Ample parking and a toilet by the parking lot. Tee signs by every hole too. These, once again, have all the info you'd ever need. There is a practice basket by hole 18's basket too.

Cons:

The course is not playable during school hours or apparently in the winter when the pins are pulled for cross country skiing. The course could become busy during peak hours and on weekends. Not really a con per se since this means it's a good course. However back ups can happen easily as it is easy to lose sight of your drive and end up searching in the rough. Especially problematic with larger groups.

Other Thoughts:

If you are anywhere near here I'd highly recommend giving this one a spin. This was absolutely the best middle or elementary school course I've played....by far. I've never even played a better high school course. Hell this course is better than probably 85 percent of the courses of any kind I've played. The designers did an almost unbelievable job with this design. Almost, because it's here and it's real. Play this course.

Good course that runs through the woods. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-18 holes, with most of them having 2 tees and 2 baskets. That makes 4 possible ways to play each hole.

-Great for groups of mixed skill players. Intermediate players can still find a good challenge from the long tees, and beginners won't get discouraged by playing from the short tees.

-Good use of elevation. There are lots of uphill and downhill shots.

-Accuracy is highly rewarded, especially on the holes with tight fairways. One particularly memorable hole had a fairway that was less than 8 feet wide which ran 250' into a clearing.

Cons:

-An 800+ rated player will probably be able to get at least par on the majority of holes, though a lot of the birdies might still be tricky. 900+ rated players could find this course trivial.

-Not much room to throw your distance drivers. Take it as an opportunity to practice stretching out your mid ranges and putters to longer distances if you have a big arm.

-Great signage. Shows elevation change and distance for each pin placement

Cons:

A Teaching Tool 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two baskets one every hole and two tee pads on most holes. This allows the course to be really good for a wider variety of skill levels. The variety on this course is phenominal. There are plenty of holes in the woods and some that play over open terrain allowing elevation and distance to be the main challenge. The property itself is well taken care of. The school or local club or parks department continues to make improvements to this course. The biggest challenges come while playing throught some really tight fairways in the woods that require precise upshots to score well. Tees are generally easy to find though finding the longer tee pads is a bit more of a challenge at times. The tee pads themselves are really nice and relatively consistent. There is a really nice course map near Blues tee pad on number 1. It has a map, and having a map for this course will make a few transitions easier to follow for the first time playing the course.

Cons:

There are far too many short holes on this course to make it much more than a good learning tool course. There are plenty of filler holes that are short and wide open. Most of the holes, even on the toughest layout are must birdie holes. Even the holes that they call par four should be threes at worst. The practice basket is not in the most convenient location and hole 18 finishes going away from the parking lot. It is a course that is on school grounds which means that when school is in session you are limited as to when you can play this course. There are a few patches of land back in the woods that were flooded and muddy even though most other places I had been showed no signs of this kind of flooding. Tee signs were not all that helpful.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed my round at this course, though it was frustrating not to score lower on this course that felt easy from even the most difficult set of tees and baskets. The multiple baskets and tees really allows for four different layouts on every hole on any given day with no work from the parks department to move baskets regularly. Additionally it allows for different skill levels to play with eachother and have fun at the same time. There are some unique holes on this course as well and one who plays this course regularly will ahve to learn to throw different shots and do it consistently. It is a feel good course that will prepare you for tougher courses to come. Be sure to know when school might be in session so as to not plan your round for that time.

Unique 18 holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course flows well, has many options for playing long/short baskets and tees, very technical but also a few holes you get to throw in the wide open but even those holes offer some elevation and require good placement for an easy bird. Holes are fairly short for the most part and even the longer holes require more of a placement/upshot than a huge drive. Good course to work on your line shaping as well as course management given the different shots/lines needed as well as placement due to the small gaps or landing areas which need to be hit. If you are having an "off" day and mental game is struggling, this course could eat you up quick and one wouldn't think when they show up to the first few holes. This course will surprise you specially playing blue to blue. One of the coolest features is the actual BLUE powder coated baskets to match the tees, different from the reds.

Cons:

Update**all issues noted below have been addressed and course plays much better after being suped up for AM worlds last year and given time to mature.**

Gravel tees are worn down and a few "pot-holes" during run up makes footwork a little tricky, being newer course the brush and saplings are still battleing with the foot traffic and will say it has much improved from last year but still a few killer trip stumps and thick "schule" lol... Concrete tees and better tee signs would bump this course up 1 disc for me as it gives you everything you want playability wise but lacks in the areas which many other 3.5-5 disc courses offer specially when it comes to amenities and overall feel is very "rec" course but plays more advanced from the longer tees. Some holes are very tight together and also blind which caused players to throw while we were still in the fairway or discs/players crossing into eachothers lies. Lacks benches/waiting areas which was a problem on such a high traffic day.

Other Thoughts:

It is obvious there was a good amount of time spent designing this course and they really took advantage of the land/space available by using all of its features to the fullest. There was a local league there the day we played and I couldn't believe how many times discs would come flying by us while we still were throwing an up-shot or groups of 4-5 not letting us (quick playing 2fer) through as well as my disc being picked up on one of the blind holes plus people in the open fields just throwing discs like crazy with no regard for others around as if they owned the place... Just didn't get a good vibe at all even though the course is challenging and probably one of the better free 18 hole courses around, it was less than a welcoming 2nd time at this course and not its fault either but part of it none the less. I'd rather play a less desirable course and not have to deal with the crap we did that day. Great work designers and those who help to make this free course possible and all of their continued efforts to grow DG by giving us new courses every year, all around the Twin Cities!

Pros:

The course offers a variety of distances and disc turns which favor certain players on certain holes and others on other holes. You find yourself doing phenomenal on one hole and enraged on the next. As far as free courses go, this is by far the best and most reliable.

-Red and Blue Tees
-Red and Blue baskets(high quality)
-Challenging shots and tests every aspect of your disc golfing abilities
-Enough distance between holes where letting someone play through isn't a hassle
-Beautiful scenes and trees
-Lots of trashcans

Cons:

While this is by far the best course south of the Twin Cities, it certainly has some drawbacks

-Marijuana Leaf drawings on tees
-The course setup for a first timer and even a fifth timer may be confusing. As someone who has played this 40+ times, I sometimes forget about how confusing it is, so make sure you either take someone experienced with you or else take a picture of the map on hole 1.
-Lots of trees to maneuver and get discs lost in

Beginner/Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set on the large grounds of a middle school, and is devoted entirely to the disc golf. At least, when the course is open to the public, it's wide open.
- About half of the holes are set in the wooded section of the grounds, with lots of trees to contend with. Some of them have some pretty interesting or tough lines, #4 is a hard flick through a lot of trees, #6 is a sharp dogleg left followed by #7 - a dogleg to the right. #9 is a long tunnelly shot that ends in a sloping green. #10 is a cool hole that has two paths to the basket, wide right and wide left, around some thick jail. #11 is another uphill flick that finished sharp right, and #16 is a tough FH flex shot to the blue basket. Good accuracy is needed on all these holes.
- Other holes are much more forgiving, or have wider fairways carved out of the woods. #12 is a RHBH hyzer, #5 and #8 are pretty short. #13 is pretty wide open, with the basket tucked amongst some trees. #15 is a little valley out of the woods, that ends back in some different woods. These still need some good line shaping and shot placement. Some other holes are even more open, #1 and #2 are completely open, and #17 and #18 have forest to avoid along the right side.
- Elevation changes are present in many different spots here, for both short holes and long, tougher and easier. The holes out in the open are much more interesting because of this - #1, #2, and #13 are all uphill, #14 is downhill, #17 is uphill off the tee, and #18 finishes downhill. In the woods, #4 is downhill, #6 is uphill before the dogleg left, #9 is a longer, sloping downhill, and #10 has an elevated teepad. Nothing extreme, but definitely noticeable.
- Very good variety of hole lengths, especially with the multiple tees and baskets. There are some holes that could be legitimate par 4's, like the dogleg left #6, dogleg right #7, tunnelish #9, the wooded dogleg left #15, and the uphill dogleg right #17. All of these are over 400', with #9 at 530'. There are also four holes under 200', and everything in between!
- Baskets in good shape, tee signs are pretty basic with the number and distance. Navigation is pretty easy, there are awesome next tee signs. Grass/natural tees are still in good shape.

Cons:

- A few holes are pretty much wide open, #1 and #2 are the most obvious, as well as #13, #17, and #18 to a certain extent. There are some challenges with elevation changes, and some forest to avoid, but they are pretty straightforward.
- The very short holes are a good complement to the longer ones, but are almost too short. The lines are tough, but at under 200', they are pretty much approach shots. Even the long to long setup is extremely short in spots.
- Apart from the woods and forest, there aren't many hazardous areas here. A lot of the course feels pretty similar in terms of appearance and challenges.

Other Thoughts:

- Overall, a very fun course that has a good mix of holes. Some short ones both in and out of the forest, and some long ones in and out of the forest. A mix of hyzers, anhyzers, some flicks, and probably spots for overhand or trick shots on some of the shorter holes. With the two tee/two basket setup, it is a great course for beginners and intermediate players. More advanced players will find some challenges on the par 4's as well, I would think.

Nice signage at hole 1...but after that it's a train wreck

Cons:

1) course isn't open M-F during school hours
2) course design is uninspiring. seems like the designer(s) simply walked through the woods making left and right turns every 50 ft and called it a design.
3) piles of trimmed brush left in the middle of rough areas only few feet from fairway...too lazy to clean up after taking down.
4) teepad are not concrete...rather CONCAVE...meaning you have that nice drop of 3 in when planting.
5) first time playing...double the time...you'll be spending half your time finding the basket and where to throw than any time spent playing.
6) hole 11 is the worst designed hole I've ever seen.
7) hole 8, which i felt was one of the better designed holes, was ruined by the designer placing the basket in a small grouping of brush. a basket surrounded by trees...wow.

In all, the entire course is a pitch to position, then hope to get up to par, with the exception of maybe 4 holes. I walked off the course on hole 17 as I couldn't stand it.

-Red tees to red pins, blue tees to blue pins, making it so you can play a pretty easy, or a pretty tough round.
-72 total hole configurations... (Red to Red, Red to Blue, Blue to Blue, Blue to Red -- Each of those having 18!) Wow!
-Really well mowed and kept

Cons:

-A fair amount of graffiti on the tee-box markers... Ugh, really people?
-I've noticed chains missing a coupe of times being there, but generally ok
-No cement teeboxes... yet.

Other Thoughts:

This course is the nicest course I've played that is a free-to-play course. One of the things I really like about it is that you get a few open holes to open up your round, then head into the woods for about 13 holes, then you're back out in the open to finish up, so it is a good variety.

Somehow, it feels like more holes go uphill, rather than downhill, but this may just be my impression because uphill holes tend to be more memorable to me. Many of the downhill holes are doglegs and quite wooded, so don't expect any holes where you get to throw absolute bombs downhills.

The cement teeboxes are not in yet, but I have heard that they are adding cement for all 36 teeboxes early next season through July.

One of the other courses nearby is Alimagnet and I can cite a few differences between the two in case you have played that one and aren't certain if you want to try this one.
-18 holes instead of 12.
-Red tees to red baskets is probably an easier course for the average player
-Blue tees to blue baskets is probably tougher than Alimagnet for the average player
-Generally more wooded than Alimagnet
-The pins aren't quite as well manicured and setup with retaining walls as the Aligmanet "greens" are

Once those are in, this has the chance to be one of the best courses free or paid!

Definitely a must play if you are in the area!

From that point on navigation is never an issue. There are next tee signs on each basket and whenever the next tee is not visible from the previous basket there are multiple next tee signs along the walk to show the way.

The course does a nice job of incorporating elevation in almost every hole even though there are no really big hills on the course to work with.

The holes feel fairly balanced with straight, right, and left break holes. With the tight fairways in the wooded sections of the course precise shot shaping is required. The distance on the holes is fairly short and most of the holes are right around 200 feet in length. For the better players the course could be played with a putter or a midrange disc until the last couple of holes that are around the four hundred foot length. It felt like the designer of the course really thought about how to lay out the course to create a fun and interesting course to play.

Tee area was clearly marked and most holes had a blue and red tee that were easy to identify. The footing was not great since most holes had wood chips placed in the tee area.

Cons:

The course has some major problems as it currently stands and one could argue that some of these problems really should have been addressed before the course was open for play. First my biggest issue with the course is that almost all of the fairways in the wood sections have stacked piles of wood in the fairway. These piles are clearly not there to enhance the course and seem to be waiting for someone to haul them out. On hole 5 for example there is three or four foot high pile of wood that is about eight feet wide that is stacked about 40 feet in front of the basket. I threw a drive off the tee that was the exact throw I wanted but instead of parking it within 10 feet of the basket for a birdie I struck the wood pile and got stuck in the wood pile and had to settle for par. There were three of four other holes where my drive was negatively impacted by these woodpiles. On hole four the blue tee is unplayable because of the massive wood pile stack on the tee. In my mind, these woodpiles are unacceptable.

Another issue with the course is the tee area of each hole. The problem is that the tee areas have been wood chipped. I detest wood chick tee areas. Wood chipping does not provide any traction and usually causes a person to stumble or slip on a run up to throw. Most of these holes are extremely short so solid footing on the tee is not as important as it is on most courses but it is still a problem. Until concrete is put in the tee areas should just have been left as dirt.

The course was extremely crowded with the type of disc golfer that you do not want to see on the tee in front of you. There were many large groups of teenagers who did not understand the proper etiquette of disc golf aka throwing multiple shots, not letting faster players play through, and standing at the pin after completing a hole to chit chat amongst themselves or on their phones. The course should be easy to play in an hour or less since the distance is so short but instead it took us an hour and forty minutes to play the course. This detracted from the overall enjoyment of the course.

While I enjoyed the technicalness of the holes the majority of the holes were to short in length. Only two of the holes were over three hundred feet in length and the rest of the holes were pretty close to the two hundred foot length.

Other Thoughts:

The course is interesting to me because it has the potential to be a fairly decent beginner course. The length of the holes make it attractive to new players because they are distances they can actual throw. The technicalness of the course through will detract from the beginner friendliness of the course. If the major issues of wood piles being stacked in the fairways and the poor tees are addressed the course will be a fun short course to play in the metro area.
