The Manifestation Of The Phrase "Existence Is Pain"

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Greenville College is…. well, home to a nature trail that apparently once had a playable disc golf course. That is, that's what the course map at the trail head would lead you to think.

But hey, it has a course map! I've given 4s to courses without one of those. That being said, the course map is where the pros for this course end.

Cons:

Let's just take a second to look at this course as if it was in its original condition back in 2011. This is supposed to be a 9-hole course where you play to each basket twice, down the to the end of the trail and back. For tee markers, there are supposed to be tee stones with the hole number that you throw from.

From a course design perspective, even if this course was in great shape, it would be one big safety hazard. The entirety of this course plays down a narrow gravel nature trail, with many of the fairways playing around blind corners according to the map. This would mean throwing around corners on a trail that is open to hikers as well, which can easily lead to injury, or at best a bad impression of disc golf for locals if they do happen to experience a near miss.

Now with that being said, this course is not in great shape. I found only about half the baskets to still be present now, and I did not find a single tee stone on site. With so few baskets left, you can't even play from the last basket at this point. The baskets that are still in place are actually nice models, but they are all either severely tilted, or are giving way to nature with plants growing on them. The best anyone playing this course can do is take a picture of the map at the trailhead, and then just take your best guess as to where you are at on the trail.

Even if you decide to still attempt this course, the course can be an easy one to lose a disc on. The woods lining the trail are thick, and there are plenty of spots with steeper slopes a disc can roll down. I'm all for penalizing errant throws that go off the fairway, but the punishment likely wouldn't fit the crime on much of this course if you get a bad kick off a tree.

Honestly, the trail itself isn't even in great shape. The pictures on this site elude to a nicely kept gravel trail with the grass mowed along it. That is not what I found here. The trail is mostly grown over at this point, with no signs that anyone has stepped foot on this chunk of land recently. I've seen apocalyptic films with better kept settings than this. It takes a lot of work to make nature feel decrepit, but that's the word that comes to mind here.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Greenville College's Gullie's Nature Trail feels like a complete afterthought. Even getting to the trailhead feels awkward, with just one sign along the road labeled "The Gullies" next to a driveway being your indication you have arrived. I felt like I was trespassing as I parked, and I'm still not convinced that I was not doing so. The course sign says this is a historic trail, but I can find zero information about it online.

This course feels completely abandoned at this point. With a cemetery neighboring much of the trail, I'm betting there are more skeletons on this property than disc golf baskets.

This course is an easy skip if you are driving along 70. I stopped over here after checking out Patriot's Park out down the road, and even that 4-minute drive felt like a waste of gas. Do yourself a favor and use the time you would take to check this course out to play somewhere else instead.

Has Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Shot selection forces curves in both directions. Short distances with directional challenges make for a good course to work on specifics, rather than the long throws.

Cons:

SIGNAGE- SIGNAGE- SIGNAGE!! My personal pet peeve... Tee stones missing... no numbers on the baskets.... I prefer signs to stones in the ground. Needed some spring cleaning around both tee areas and baskets.

Other Thoughts:

One of those courses that has "fun" potential written all over it, but the lack of maintenance leaves it lacking.
I was pressed for time otherwise would have enjoyed it more.

Tight and frustrating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Baskets are brand new
* Scenery is good while playing
* Is very challenging
* Some decent elevation changes

Cons:

* Very difficult to maneuver without map
* Some shots are near impossible due to:
- sharp turns
- blind turns
* Difficult to find the pads to throw from
* most baskets are impossible to see from pad.
* If you throw a disc off to the side, it may be impossible to find it again, as there are very steep hills on each side for half the course, with very thick woods.
* Is muddy in some spots
* There are no holes you can unload on.

Other Thoughts:

This course feels the least like a course out of all others I've played. It is basically a walking path down a hill with random baskets.

Odd 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays along a wooded walking trail. Mature trees keep most of the course in shade and brush lines the fairways offering heavy punishment for errant shots. Many of the holes offer tight lines to hit, with a nice balance of left and right turning holes. A few holes have some decent elevation changes. The baskets are in good shape. There are fairly accurate course maps at both ends of the layout, you'll want to snap a picture to help with navigation.

Cons:

There are major safety issues here. Every single hole plays along the walking path, meaning lots of waiting if there are walkers or joggers out. Many of the holes have blind turns, without a spotter it's way too easy to throw into path users. The layout of the course has you playing backwards for the back 9, meaning more possibility for blindly throwing into another group.

There is little maintenance outside of the path itself, so some of the lines are grown in to the point of being too tight, and there's strong possibility of losing discs. The tees are natural and few are level. The tee markers are small paving stones at ground level, many of which are grown over with grass or brush. Without careful attention to the course map it can be difficult to figure out where the tees should be.

Other Thoughts:

The shots are short, but with lots of heavy rough and tighter lines beginners may be a bit frustrated. More experienced players will find the course short with some decent short game practice but major safety issues and maintenance concerns take away from the fun factor here a lot. I wouldn't go out of your way for this one, and I hope that discs flying blindly around corners doesn't give a terrible impression of our sport to all the other path users (or cause serious injury!)

Nice technical wooded and steep 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice technical lines. good for mid range game

Cons:

no big throws, follows walking path so the potential to knock out a college student walking the course is possible with blind throws, alot glass and metal around

Other Thoughts:

when the course gets cleaned up a little more it will be nice. The course plays better going up the hill or the back 9, than the front
