Wide Open and Long 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Good baskets.
2. Easy to navigate.
3. Good length (averages over 365 feet/hole)
4. Informative tee signage (though the old DGA decals, so not the greatest).

Cons:

1. Other than hole 2, the course is basically wide open.
2. Tee areas (natural) aren't great, with them being uneven. Easier (and a little safer) throwing off to the side of them.

Other Thoughts:

This is my least favorite type of course to play (WIDE open...no real challenge other than length). Some players will love that, and it's fine for what it is. But if you're looking to be challenged to throw a wide variety of shots, look elsewhere.

Hidden Meadows 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Mostly shorter holes, with a few long ones to open up on. You can play 9 rather quickly which is nice if you want to get a quick round in on the way home from work.

Cons:

Not very challenging. Holes are open except for #2 where you throw into the trees.

Fields o' Fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) Mostly wide open.
2) Not very busy.
3) A good place to bring younger kids.
4) Decent use of elevation and a small wooded area.
5) There are hole maps at each tee box.
6) Very nice baskets.

Cons:

1) Fairways are mowed weeds.
2) Variable gravel / dirt tee boxes.
3) A low somewhat swampy spot connecting holes 4 & 5. To be fair we have had some heavy rains lately.

Other Thoughts:

Wanted to mention that all baskets are there! I am glad we checked this one out and would go back to try out a new disc. We played it through twice. There's a sheltered pavilion, trash cans and ample parking near a single goal basketball court and the oddest baseball field I have ever seen. (Trust me.) Worth a shot if you're in the area!

Ho hum 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Nice long holes for practice on your drives
*Shorter rough makes finding discs easier
*Fairways are fairly wide
*Easy to navigate
*Signed fairly well

Cons:

*Baskets on #2 and #3 were stolen
*No garbage cans
*Not very challenging, trees on 2 holes and power lines on 1, rest are just flat or hills
*Fair amount of bothersome flies

Other Thoughts:

Hole #1 - Just a straight shot, rather mundane.
Hole #2 - Dog leg right into the woods, which will be nice once the basket is returned
Hole #3 - Straight shot out of the woods back into the rolling hills
Hole #4 - Striaght shot over a hill
Hole #5 - Straight shot
Hole #6 - Straight shot
Hole #7 - Straight shot
Hole #8 - Straight shot with power line poles as very minor obstacle
Hole #9 - Straight shot, just decide if you want to go to the left or right around a line of trees and more power poles, with a small swamp on left which is a non factor
Really just a course to practice long drives or are passing through, not a destination course.

Beginners Welcome 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

wide open field - very difficult to lose a disc

practice/test a variety of shots you normally don't throw with no obstacles

Cons:

No real challenge beyond distance

Other Thoughts:

Might be difficult during wet conditions - there are a few low spots & wetlands. If you live north of the metro and are just staring the sport, this is as good a place to throw your arm out as you'll find.

Bland and Repetitive 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The baskets on the course are in pristine condition and the grassy field that the course plays through was maintained well though this could be that the grass has not grown enough this year to require any maintenance. There is a tee sign at each tee area that shows a depiction of the hole and lists the distance and par. Hole 2 and Hole 9 are the two holes that are interesting to play and create some fun holes. Hole 2 is set in a clump of trees across a large grassy area and is heavily defended by the trees. There is no path from the right or straight that can reach the basket and if a disc lands in the either of these areas at least an extra stroke will be incurred. There is an opening to the left of the trees that can be reached with a backhand or a forehand and from there it is a relative easy approach to the basket. Hole 9 requires you to choose immediate off the tee if you want to take the right line or the left line around a set of electric poles. Either path is possible. The problem with this hole is that the first electric pole is about three feet in front of the tee and the hole would be much better if the tee was set back ten feet or so. Other than these two holes the course is rather bland and repetitive.

Cons:

The course was uninteresting to play. 7 of the 9 holes were simply throw far and straight in a wide open field. While there was not much to work within the land this course still felt very uninspired. There was no real reason to shape shots and accuracy was not much of an issue. Hole 8 required a little accuracy since there are out of bound lines bordering on either side of the fairway though the fairway was about 100 feet wide so even a poor shot could land in bounds. While the grassy field was well maintained at this time I could easily see the course turning into a disc eating machine during the summer months if the field was not mowed regularly.

The tee areas were some of the worst I have ever seen. The idea of using large chunk gravel has replaced wood chips on my list of least favorite tee surfaces though it still has a way to go to catch my absolute least favorite of the rusted iron plates at Ninigret Park. Unlike a previous reviewer's experiences, the gravel is now packed downed. The problem is even when it is packed down the surface is no fun to throw off of. The large chunk gravel creates an uneven surface with sharp and hard pieces of gravel sticking up higher than the rest of the surface. In addition even packed down large chunk gravel is extremely slippery. After the first couple of holes I stopped using the gravel tees and started throwing from the grass next to them. In my mind, it would have been better if they had just left the tee area as natural instead of using large chunk gravel.

Other Thoughts:

The course is fairly far out of the way and is not the most interesting or inspired course to play. It would seem to be a good course to work on distance without having to worry about accuracy though this would only apply if you lived nearby since there are better courses closer to the twin cities where the same thing can be done.

Hassan Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Relatively few spots to lose discs. There is some tall grass right up against the basket on Hole 4 and the wetlands running against Hole 8 is tall as well. Otherwise, fairly open and short wild grass.

2)Very easy to navigate even without a map because being new all the signs are in great shape and everything is marked.

3) Despite being very limited with what they have to work with, they tried their best to incorporate something so no hole would be just a straight ahead forward shot. Even the open field shots try to work in a little elevation change.

4) Distance. Several shots are 500 feet or more. Several more because of the tee boxes (explained in the con) while are only 350 feel like over 400. Basically, if you want to do open field practice, you might as well do it here because you will have a target to shoot at.

Cons:

The designer of the course worked with what they had. So while losing stars for things that are out of their control like more wooded holes, line shaping, cement tee boxes, etc, there is nothing about the course itself that is uniquely a con except the tee boxes. However, there are several issues with individual holes.

Tee Boxes) The crushed gravel was still very loose and not packed down. This will come with time as more play, but for the time being it was more treacherous and uneven to tee off on that just playing on the natural ground. Some were also too short, forcing to start my run-up behind the box, and then having to worry about my first step as the gravel was an inch or two higher than the ground.

Hole #1) The tee sign and the sign explaining the rules of disc golf are on both sides of the gravel tee box. While on the backside of the tee box, it still got into my mind that my arm on a follow through my strike them.

Hole #2) The property has a very small patch of woods in which the basket sits in. The opening to this patch is perpendicular to your first shot. An incredibly well placed anhyzer, forehand, or left handed throw may be able to penetrate the opening, but most likely since it is 340 feet away, you are better off just aiming for the opening. Too early or late and the angle to approach into the forest closes quickly. What would be ideal is to move the tee box closer by 40-60 feet and swinging it a little closer to Hole 1's fairway.

Hole #3) Just a warning, the tall grass sits behind the basket and is a blind shot. Use spotters or do not throw a driver and purposely come up short.

Hole #8) This is a long shot. There is an OB path on the left and OB protected wetlands on the right. This creates a playable but narrow strip of fairway for anyway who can drive over 330 feet. While the OB is not the issue, how long you can fly over OB is. In either case, you can go OB early despite actually making it most of the way to the basket. Also, the curve of the beginning of the wetland also makes it difficult to determine exactly where you went OB. A drop box would be ideal for this hole.

Hole #9) Tries to use the power lines and the trees around it as an obstacle. It gives you two lines to attempt to reach this otherwise open hole. The only issue I had was how close the tee box is to the first power pole. It is literally on top of the first pole. I would rather see it moved back by 10 feet to allow a safer follow through.

Other Thoughts:

You can hear the power lines while you are out there but they are never an issue. The poles, however, are used as obstacles, which are actually a good thing because the course has so little in other obstacles. I can see where wind can be an issue.

I do not think this will make a good winter course because of the distances involved and how much open area there is.

If the softball/ baseball field, which is very rough itself, is ever in use, Hole 2 becomes dangerous and likely unplayable as you are driving into center field.

Finally, like I said about driving practice, if you are itching to just get out and do field work, this actually is a nice place to do it because you will have a target to shoot at, at least an obstacle or two to give you something to think about, and the likelihood of losing a dics is very low.

Yep, Meadows. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

All the basic elements of a complete course - signs, tee pads, baskets. Good flow. Used all the land and features available. Easy navigation, just look around for the next sign. The whole area was well-mowed.

Cons:

Tee pads are small and made of crushed rock, with a board across the front. Some tee signs are so close to the teeing area as to get in the way. Not a lot of shot shaping.

Other Thoughts:

Basic disc golf. The tee is here, the target is there - throw at it.

If Elm Creek Park Reserve had a baby, this might be it. It's mostly an open meadow with just a bit of elevation, so the potential was limited. However, they did what they could, with a blind shot, a curve into the woods, a shot out of the woods, power poles in play on a couple of holes, and quite a bit of distance for a green-level 9-hole course.

The park is open until 10 pm, and it would be rare to lose a disc, so night golf may be this course's specialty. But keep it quiet; elementary school kids are asleep next door.
