Short and surprisingly wooded town park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ A short layout hidden in a park with a surprisingly varied set of holes. The first few holes (which have second tees to become holes #10 and #11) play through a wooded park. You start behind a playground and head off picking your lines around old-growth trees interspersed on a flat and very pretty well-mowed park. But then...

+ Hole #3 is a wooded water carry: diagonally over a crossing creek. It's only 170', but it's a narrow slot to hit, and you feel the water on the left the whole way

+ Hole #4 takes you back across the creek. This time, the creek is perpendicular and requires only about 100' to clear, but the trees create only a few lanes, and it's easy to kick backwards down the bank into the water

+ The remaining holes are also short, but that creek pops up a few more times, and you're playing in surprisingly tight woods, considering the "town park setting" of the first few holes. There's even a bit of elevation on a few

Cons:

- Signage is just small white wood squares with hole numbers on them. No tees - just spots in the dirt near the signs where you figure you should stand when throwing

- Hole #9 is pretty much throwing directly at a walking path and footbridge where people will naturally stop. Watch out for walkers

- This is a short course but the tight woods create possibility for lost discs or lots of time spent searching. So beware that you could walk off really mad at what's not much more than a bagging stop

Other Thoughts:

~ After throwing across the water on #4, walk right - to the bridge near the front of the park to cross the creek (you'll use this bridge again on hole #9)

~ There's a great hand-written sign on hole #3 offering a short tee for people who don't want to throw over the water ("If you are new at this throw to basket #3 from here. Otherwise go on to tee pad #3")

~ Speaking of hand-written messages, the sign at #3 tee says "Pick up your dog's shit or fucking leave!" Not a fan of graffiti or defacing signs, but I agree with the sentiment

~ Credit goes to whoever figured out this layout. A few of the holes are dull, a few are fun, a few require really precise throws - but none of them are bad. I've been on a lot of nines hand-cut through woods that had me thinking "what the hell?" when standing on a tee. Sure, Sawyer Park is very short. It's more of an enjoyable bagging stop that you can play with a mid or a putter. But it accomplishes that pretty well

COURSE AMENITIES:
Good DisCatcher baskets, no tees, signage is only hole numbers. Use uDisc to navigate

RECOMMENDED COMBINATIONS:
Easy to get to Basil Marella and Parma with this as a 30 minute bagging stop along the way

Short, technical course that's rough around the edges 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Not a terribly unfair course.
- Technical course favors accuracy over distance
- Almost never over-crowded or busy
- Quick course to complete if short on time

Cons:

- VERY rough course with little in the way of 'structure'
- Some holes are not very clear on where to drive from
- Some areas make disc loss a real possibility
- No real tee-pads, just dirt patches
- Some tee-off areas full of roots

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, this course has a special place in my hear, but it's the same way a Boglin holds a special place in one's heart. If you enjoy hikes through the woods, and tight, technical lines that aren't very forgiving, this course will give you a challenge and a great hike. If you're looking for a more structured, 'pretty' course, this isn't it.

Very relaxing course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 25, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

You have the whole course to yourself, nobody is ever throwing there.
Short but very technical holes through woods.
Nice and quiet.
You won't need to lug your whole bag, leave your drivers behind.
Each hole now has a tee sign with the footage to each basket.
All holes except #1, #2 and #4 have a nice big stump at the tee area to rest your bag on or sit on.
Holes #2, #3, #4 and #6 have been cleaned up and are much more beginner friendly while also opening up possible ace runs.
Many of the low hanging branches near the basket on #3 have been removed. Hole #3 also has a new sign next to Hole #2 basket which allows for a safer tee box throw towards basket #3 if you don't want to throw over the water from the regular tee.
Hole #4 has been extensively reworked and now has a Hyzer line so you don't HAVE to throw through that tiny gap of two trees over the creek.
Hole #6 has been cleaned up and you can now try an Anny, go straight or throw a Hyzer line.
If you are in a hurry you could easily play 9 holes in about 20 minutes.

Cons:

Can be kinda muddy at the bottom of Hole #5 at times.
Lots of dog walkers around dinner time.

Other Thoughts:

Personally, I love this course. No one is ever playing there so it's very relaxing. No need to rush like when you're at Basil because there's always somebody behind you there it seems. The only way to get a good score is to really make some technical shots which will only help your game when you play other wooded courses. Selfishly I kind of hope it stays a hidden gem.

North Greece Hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Unique basket placements
- Good use of elevation
- Good offering of risk/reward
- Playable for beginners but still offers a challenge for experienced players
- Alternate tee pads for playing 18
- Smooth tee pads
- Good signage
- Challenging throw over a playground

Cons:

- The water is a disc eater
- Sometimes random people/dogs wander through the area
- Muddy after rain

Other Thoughts:

This special nook is located not far from Basil. It's a scenic trail that offers the chance to play a serene round. The sound of the babbling brook and the chirping of birds will help you escape the city. While not as good as Parma and maybe slightly worse than Basil, it's definitely worth the drive to check out.

Hole 9 is a bit of a "top of the world" shot. The kind of hole you empty your bag on.

There is a nice park for kids to play at and some good dining across the street. Bring out the family and spend the evening, you wont regret it!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good use is made of a park that isn't huge. It begins by playing through a grove of tall firs, and I wish there was more than one hole that did. Two more holes are on the park side of the creek before crossing into the woods on the other side.

Some skill is definitely needed to negotiate the fairways. They aren't generous lines, but aren't unfair either.

Navigation was easy with good simple directional signs. The park doesn't seem to have much activity other than dog walkers, but I was there on a winter day during the week.

There are alternate tee pads (or tee areas) marked 10-18. I didn't play them, but they looked generally longer than the regular tees.

Cons:

No tee pads, and it wasn't always clear exactly where you were teeing off from (particularly on hole 9, where a few feet in either direction made a difference.

The other cons are mainly due to how un-rec-friendly this course is. Despite having most of the holes under 200 feet, most fairly new players wouldn't enjoy this. Hole 3 is a shot along and across the creek, and I don't see anyway a fairly green player (especially a RHBH) could negotiate this throw without ending up in the creek, which is 20+ feet wide and several feet deep. Hole 4 has a pretty narrow gap to hit just on the other side of the creek, which is a design feature I hate. Even a good player is going to get shanked into the creek on a regular basis.

As mentioned above, the lines to the basket are pretty narrow.

Other Thoughts:

If you are a fairly accomplished player looking for a short course that emphasizes pinpoint accuracy, I suppose this is your place. But I played here in early December and probably would not return in cold weather again. A fairly good drive on hole 7 nicked a tree on the right side of the fairway and skipped into the creek. Not the way you want to spend a chilly afternoon.

This is right down the street from Basil Marella if you are looking to knock out two courses.

Not sure what it wants to be 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Pavilions and bathrooms on site
- Interesting use of the creek and a bit of elevation changes
- Even with the creek in play, low chance of lost discs
- Lots of tight lines require some shot shaping
- Short, short 9 holes

Cons:

- dirt tees
- no tee signs
- most tees are marked with signs on trees, most you are guessing as to where the end of the tee is
- navigation isn't too bad but I needed a few glances at the map

Other Thoughts:

When it is all said and done - I did have a good time on my round....but even though I had the time to spare I didn't choose to take another lap. I am not quite sure what this course is trying to "be". It has tight, technical lines that are too challenging for kids / complete beginners. It is too short to be much of a challenge to an experienced player. Even with its short holes there aren't a ton of ace runs because of the lines required. I think this course would be much better served if it was opened up quite a bit to make a very family / beginner friendly course. With basil around the corner I just don't see the point of stopping by as it is.

Interesting par 3's 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-A beautiful 9 hole course around a park. The park has a pavilion, playground, restrooms, and walking trails. It would be perfect to have a disc golf themed BBQ!
-A lot of variety on the course. Water shots, wooded, and doglegs make it interesting. A lot of tight shots are required

Cons:

-Be sure to print out a map before you play. It can get confusing. Natural tee pads. Watch for the spray painted numbers/arrows on trees.
-There's not a single bench on the course. Not a big deal, I just like to sit and relax every so often.
-A few of the holes put you right next to the play/party areas. Watch for innocent bystanders!
-Thick woods. Trees/scrub everywhere. A little trimming back would help a lot.

Other Thoughts:

-Great course to kill an hour with. My 11 yo Son loves it!

-1 Trees on the left. Trees/playground on the right. Straight ahead through all this mess.
-2 Basket is back on the left of the fairway. trees everywhere!
-3 My favorite! I am a leftie - throw over the water to the left, curves perfectly! Thick trees on the right. Good luck righties!
-4 I'm not a big fan of this hole. Throw through a mess of trees, slightly to the left, and over water. This hole is right next to the pavilion and the bathrooms.
-5 Nasty wooded uphill hole. Tomahawk/thumber?
-6 Another nasty wooded hole! Kinda reminds me of a baby Basil Marella. Thonk Thonk $#@#@# Thonk Clang!
-7 A great leftie hole. Curves to the right. Watch out for the creek on the left!
-8 Yet another nasty wooded shot. Straight ahead.
-9 Curves to the left through thick trees. Watch out for the creek/bridge/people at the bottom of the trail.

Good for recreational play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- tees marked usually on trees
- hole number marked on basket
- I could navigate the course pretty easily only checking the map once or twice
- lots of directional signs towards next basket
- even though the holes are short good use of the trees and creek as obstacles
- location near picnic area if you want to have lunch
- great for recreational players who just want to have fun
- even though the park is busy, the disc golf course avoids the people
- can be played quickly if you are in a hurry
- the woods and creek add a little character to the course
- some nice risk and rewards opportunities

Cons:

- very short and not reasonable for a serious disc golf round
- no tee pads although the footing is not too bad on the tees
- no official signs but not a big deal because all the baskets are visible from the tees

Other Thoughts:

This course is not a destination course but quite fun if you are in the are and want to have a picnic with the family. The course is pretty decent for children because of the short holes but might be a little difficult because of the trees and creek. I especially enjoyed this course when I carried just one disc (Roc) and didn't have to lug all my discs around. Note on the rating- I would only give a 9 hole course a max rating of 2.5 since it only has half the baskets and I not as critical on tee pads and signage as long as its fairly easy to navigate because I think nine hole courses are more for relaxing. I am looking for how fun the course is and the layout more in the rating and this course was enjoyable to play.

Also has alternate tees set up further back from front nine tees to make same holes longer for a back 9

-right next to a playground (watch for the little ones)

short 9. needs help 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 19, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- description: short 9 hole course heavily wooded with a stream in play on several of the holes.
- time: fastest course i've ever played. took around 20 minutes.
- difficulty: easy. i put this as a pro because it can be a quick warm-up course if you're looking to play basil (a nice wooded course only a few minutes away) or if you just want to work on your midrange and putting.
- signature hole: would have to be hole 7. tee off standing along the stream, up and over a tiny hill. two fairways available, a backhand one that takes you closer to the edge of the woods or a sidearm shot that flirts with the stream.

Cons:

- tees and signs: poor. signs are simply numbers on white boards and tees are dirt. no directional arrow from one hole to the next.
- hole maintenance: needs some clearing out in different places and more clarity of where the tees are meant to be. for instance, hole 9. where the sign is actually placed, there is NO fairway to the basket because it's all literally overgrown with branches, leaving you the only option of teeing off 5-10 feet to the right of the sign and skipping an overstable disc down a walking path.
- hole designs: i think a little tinkering in length and fairways could be done, but the space may be too small for drastic changes
- children/playground: watch out. kids could become obstacles at any second or decide to retrieve a thrown disc for you :)

Other Thoughts:

- short on time and like woods, stop on by for a round or two. have fun creating alternate tees, too.
- examples of alternate tees: coolest one i could find is for hole 9. continue on walking path along stream past basket 9 and away from the parking lot. at around 200 feet, by a big tree next to the stream, turn back around and face basket 9. this could be a fun hole 10, leaving you a fairway either out over the stream (pretty gutsy because of overhanging branches) or out over land with a tree or two to navigate.

Short Game Practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

A fun mini-course. Good for quick 1 or 2 disc rounds. A little creek runs through the course which adds a slight challenge to 3 of the holes. I really like hole 3 which is over a bend in the creek and is definately an ace run. Good chance to work with midrange, approach, and putting.

Cons:

Basket #9 was missing. Tough to follow the signs to the next hole. Had to use map on cell phone for most holes. Screaming children running around the park and woods from a day camp.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definately not on par with the other courses in Rochester, but it's still not a bad little course to stop by for a picnic and a quick 9.

Not a bad course at all 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Tight, short shots. Not a bad course, but easy. Plenty af ace chances keep it interesting.

Cons:

Tricky to navigate, and all the holes are very short. In the summer, it can get fairly overgrown. This course seems to be the skinniest of five brothers at the dinner table. I just don't think it gets the attention it should with better courses so near.

Other Thoughts:

I usually don't play 9 hole courses, but this was around the corner from Basil, so I gave it a shot. It's pretty primitive, and probibly the weakest course in the area, but it's still fun. "Easy" seems to sum it up, but couldn't we all use the confidence boost every now and then? I wouldn't plan a trip around it, but if you're sick of the other Rochester area courses, and need a change of scenery, check it out!

Basil's Runaway Bastard Child 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Not as terrible as I was expecting. I have played far worse....I'm sure Rochester Dgers shudder at that thought. It's a short course thats a good warm up for Basil or a nice practice course or a place to have a fun round and not worry about crowds or backups.None of the holes are long so it plays real quick with a midrange and a putter. Very tight lines that offer rewarding birdies and punish misfires.
Course had straight, left, right and plinko style holes so I never got bored. If you focus on what this course has and not what it lacks you can appreciate it. I love a good plinko hole where you are forced to find a line. Hole #1 with its grove of trees rising out of mowed and manicured grass is as good as plinko gets. 3 holes incorporate a wide yet shallow stream into the shot. Good use of banks and undulating terrain to create some fun approaches. The tight gnarly lines will only make you a better player as I birdied and double bogeyed here......I think I could break 20 here but might try all day trying.

Cons:

Theres plenty to disgust DG snobs here. No Tees, No easy way across the stream, signs consist of just a white piece of wood with a number tacked to it nailed to a tree, It's a little unkempt, and the attempt to provide 18 holes with dual tee off positions is laughable as there are no tees and often zero lines due to overvegetaion from these extra positions. (good idea poorly executed)
Really has no appeal as the lines are too tight for beginners and the course is too short for experienced players. Course doesnt even have many ace chances either as the density of the trees and obstacles makes aces unlikely. (I almost got hole 6 though) It has some decent variety and intersting features but it just seems like it's uncared for and left to go on iit's whimsical way.

Other Thoughts:

I came here looking to get an easy ace and to course bag....shame on me. I'm glad I played it though and if I had a course like this near me I am sure it would benefit my game with the tight lines required. Supposedly these 9 baskets were holes 19-27 at Basil and they got taken out and placed here....seems crazy to do that and put the baskets in a park right around the corner that is far inferior to the mighty Basil.

Variation of different shots, one over water, some amongst trees, some more open. Few nice left hooks.

Wonderful use of the space. Great place to teach people the sports, fun place to work on your short game!

Cons:

Not a big course, only 9 holes, and might have a lot of people around at certain times of the year...but I've never seen anybody.

****UPDATE**** this course has sort of been taken back by nature. It may get a facelift soon...but we'll have to see what happens. Essentially storms took down trees and weeds grew up and weren't pulled and leaves fell and gather loosely everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course with a mid and a putter. Or a mid, approach, and putter....or maybe just approach and putter.

If you like a Challenger for putting and approaching maybe just bring that. I could certainly score well on this course with just a Challenger.

This course is a fun little trip. I like to play speed 1-2 disc rounds with my dad here. This course is like a mile away from Basil so sometimes when we leave Basil we realize we're up for more, and stop off at Sawyer Park and get in a quick 9-27 holes.

Parma and Basil are both really close...so if you're traveling play those...but if you have the time to stop over, Sawyer is a welcome little detour.
