Almost.... best describes Anson

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple Tee Pads
Multiple Baskets
Mix of Woods, fields and elevation changes
Variety of shots
Available for different skill levels

Cons:

O boy where do begin?
Layout can be confusing
Signage isn't great
Multi use park puts pedestrians in line on a few holes
2 holes Cross each other on the back?!?! Seriously?
Some of the tee box location choices are questionable.

Other Thoughts:

The property that Anson B Nixon is on has everything you want when designing a course- woods, open areas, water, elevation changes, parking, its a home run of a canvas.

The course starts off with a great hole that may be a little close to pedestrians, but not unsafe. The next few holes are all enjoyable with the tee and basket variety and you can see why this course is enjoyable. Unfortunately you get to 11-14 and things go down hill quick. The field throws are a messy jumble of baskets and tees everywhere, throwing across each and doubling back.
Fortunately for Anson- 15-18 bring it back but not enough to save the overall design.

There are just so many "almost" parts to the course, I can't rate it too high. I feel with a few minor changes to the front and a pretty solid redesign in those middle few holes, this could be one of the best public park course in SE PA.

18 Hole... er, 92 Hole Disc Golf Course? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Anson B. Nixon's (ABN) rating has been dogged by issues' long past. It's also not an ideal course for DG newcomers and others who could be easily be overwhelmed by the sheer number of tees/baskets/players, but also those traveling who want an easy one and done before moving on.

Because of the rating, I avoided driving out of the way to get to this (currently) 3-star course but now that I tried it, it was well worth the trip. In fact, it makes me question the 4-star ratings I gave to a number of 18 hole community parks that also have fairly regular terrain. Will have to revisit that issue.

That, combined with seeing at least three volunteers work on this course on a Sunday, convinced me it has the secret sauce to every great course. Not just a one and done design but an active community that wants to continually make it better. This is a course built by and for regulars.

The striking thing about ABN is just how many tee pads it has, up to 3 each hole, and a consistent 2 baskets every time. Red Tees are the easiest, Blue are intermediate, Gold are the longest and hardest. Half the time, there are 3 tees, other times Red/Blue gets combined. A Baskets are short and B baskets are long. I counted 92 combinations in total. I don't think a dozen trips here could uncover all the variations.

Sometimes the tees and baskets just add distance but often they change the angle of trajectory, or make a simple hyzer into an 'S' curve, and switch a left turning hole to the right. #2 and #12 Reds vs other colors on the map are extreme examples of teeing off from completely different places.

Anyway, I'm not ordinarily a fan of multiple tees or baskets for that matter, it often comes off as a superfluous way to add thirty feet in other courses, but it goes in such extreme here it's parody. I definitely would not want every course I visit to be like this, yet at ABN it circles back to good and works surprisingly very well for the most part. Played Gold Tees to B baskets.

The course can be split up into three zones. (A) Holes 1-6 and 16-18 are ordinary and flat forest holes and Gold-B combination distances seemed reasonable. (B) Holes 7, 8, 10 all make use of the elevation of the higher ridge slope leading to the plateau of the soccer fields to start at and shoot down into the forest. Increased distances. #9 starts in forest and shoots up same slope. (C) And finally, there is an open section 11-15, where you can have some truly long distance bombs. 11/12/13 making maximum use of the slope.

Using the tee pads and baskets, I think most players could easily craft a course to their liking here using either tees/basket color/letter system or selecting tees and baskets hole-by-hole a la carte or even sticking to one zone. For example, doing the front 9 twice over, with a virtually different course on each pass.

Lastly, there is this mysterious small unnumbered fairway between 9 and 10 on the map with its own 2 tees and a single basket separate from #10 proper. The other, scorecard map, calls it 10x? I didn't notice it while playing. Is it an unofficial 19th hole? A sacred initiation point to become a 32nd Degree in the mysterious Disc Golf Lodge? A halfway point to sacrifice Virgin Plastic to the Disc Golf gods if you're playing a bad round so far? Idk. The answer, of course, is probably Aliens.

+Name of the game here is variety, variety, variety!
+Navigation is good with basket signs but Udisc or a map is still recommended
+No brush in the forest
+Excellent tees and signs.

Cons:

I can see ABN as being simply overwhelming. Baskets are sometimes close together and not particularly well-differentiated to the non-eagle-eyed. Here, it's not unusual to have four baskets in close proximity to each other and a newcomer just guessing what they're throwing at. On #12, for instance, I threw into 14B. This was a course I was ready for but not everyone will be.

Especially in the forest, baskets and tees can just be too close for comfort. Or #18 ending baskets to the children's playground. The layout is very aggressively positioned, too much so at times.

I played on a drizzly Sunday afternoon and the player groups were numerous although I didn't bump into too many people. With the variety of lengths, it's just going to be reality that you'll bump into player groups going forward and have to pass or allow passers.

The long bombs of 11, 12, and 14 felt redundant to me. I couldn't even see the goal until past halfway point throwing from gold 11 to B basket. Or gold 12 to B for that matter. Getting to shorter 15 was a relief. I guess that's a matter of playing style and taste though. I'm not a distance thrower by any measure and would probably throw Blue-As on these next time.

It takes backtracking to reach 12. A lot if shooting Golds to B baskets. #14 Gold is out of the way as well.

#13 and 14 completely play into each other. If a group is ahead of you, especially look out here.

Previous reviews say it gets muddy, and I can see it especially on the open, ridged section being problematic. It's just one steep slope to slip on.

-No benches?
-Amenities weren't open besides one portapotty lacking TP. Strange for such a heavily visited park.

Other Thoughts:

Out of XXXXX:

Terrain: XXXx - Very good. There is precious little here that is unique or special, aside the soccer ridge, but it's very spacious and accommodating to the game. No brush as far as I could tell, either.
Execution: XXXXx - Phenomenal. Many years of club activity honed this into a course surpassing the terrain. Signs/tees excellent. Could use some niceties like benches every so often.
Upkeep: XXXXX - Saw 3 people clearing fallen debris while I was here. How much more active can it be?
Difficulty: Oo / OOOo - Variable. It can be anywhere from beginner to firmly in intermediate territory.
Fun Factor: XXXXx - Aside 11/12/14, I loved the Gold-Bs. Will play the blues on the open next time and change up the forest as well.
Crowded: OOOo. Crowded. Came here once before in summer, seemed like everyone and their mother was playing. Even now, end winter, drizzle, still had enough people.
Overall: XXXXx - 4.25 would be my score but rounds up to 4.5.

An excellent worthwhile course if your ready for it. It puts previous 18ers on average terrain in perspective for me and I might have to revisit their scores.

Something for Everyone 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course hasn't been reviewed much in a few years, and it seems like some old flaws have been corrected. I found it to be a very good course, playing from Blue (middle) tees to "B" (long) baskets in July of 2021.

+ Three sets of tees and two complete sets of baskets. The 6200' layout we played had plenty of challenges. There are longer Gold tees that change some holes substantially, while adding 2000'. The shorter Reds simplify and shorten the holes to make the course beginner-friendly

+ The course is mostly wooded, with some long open holes sprinkled in for variety. Fairways are not particularly narrow, but there are plenty of doglegs here, so the trees define the throwing lines and protect the greens

+ There's a surprising amount of elevation change on holes that play near the (substantially) raised soccer fields. Holes 8, 10, 11, and 12 are all designed to take advantage: considerable downhill and uphill throws, along with sidehill stances come into play

+ The signage is excellent (this seems to be a big change over earlier reviews). Each sign shows the lines and lengths for all possible combinations of the three tees and two baskets, indicates OB and other notable park features, includes topographic lines, and points the direction of the next tees. You really couldn't ask more from tee signs

+ Baskets have painted wooden arrows hanging below the cage showing the directions of the Gold, Blue and Yellow tees (often three different directions!)

+ Raised basket 8B is a nice touch

Cons:

- The "A" baskets are Mach 3's that look pretty old and rusty. I did not play them, so I don't know how well they still catch

- Much of the course plays near walking paths in this multi use park. More importantly, some holes have paths that cross the line of play

- One notable flaw in the design is that holes 13 and 14 cross each other playing in opposite directions. I played on a quiet day, so it wasn't a big deal. But on busy days these create some danger of throwing on other groups, along with very likely slowdowns to play

Other Thoughts:

~ Judging from pictures and reviews, it seems like mud can be a real problem after substantial rains, especially as you get closer to the soccer fields with the steep sides down to the course. The picture of hole #10 on this site show how dramatic the impact can be, creating a temporary "lake" approaching the basket

~ Not really a flaw, but it's worth noting that the layouts are so substantially different that you might have trouble staying spread out from other groups playing at the same time if they're not playing the same tees or baskets as your group. The Red tees and the A baskets are so much shorter that groups will be playing much faster than those playing the longer layouts

~ The strongest feature of this course is the multiple layouts for play, with each showing a variety of holes (wooded, open, doglegs, up and down elevation changes). There's something for everyone here, whether you're a relative newbie playing the reds, or you're looking for an 8000' challenge

COURSE AMENITIES:
Concrete and paver tees, excellent signage, "A" baskets are old Mach 3's, "B" baskets are newer DD Veterans. Very cart friendly. Big public park with lots of bathrooms and other facilities. Parking could be a little tight in the lot nearest the first tee on busy days

TL;DR
With three sets of tees and two complete sets of baskets, there's something for everyone here. Mostly wooded park course, with some long open holes sprinkled in. Excellent signage, easy navigation, concrete and paver tees, newer baskets (DD) are excellent. Holes near the soccer fields can get really muddy and flooded. Many holes have walking trails alongside or crossing. Great course if its dry and the park isn't crowded

Great flow from one hole to the next. (other than the navigation/guidance on how to get there)
Decent variety of elevation change.
Great variety of hole design - good mix of open field bombs vs tight technical shots.
Great scenery.
Signage was good.

Cons:

Some holes were a bit confusing navigating from one to the other.
Needs next tee arrows under the baskets.

A gorgeous park, but a potentially discriminative disc golf course... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Anson B. Nixon Park is a gorgeous park with a family-friendly atmosphere and various fun activities. The park is located near Kennett Square, a quaint town with several great watering holes and local hotspots, and is easy to get to, being right off of Route 1. I would definitely return to Anson B. Nixon Park again for family get-togethers, barbeques, or to play any number of sports at their excellent facilities. I would not, however, return to play disc golf there.

Cons:

The disc golf course at Anson B. Nixon park has many other reviews that describe the shots there as "varied" and "technical". I could only agree that the shots needed for this course are "technical" insofar as a RHBH player will need just about every shot in the game. The shots are nowhere close to "varied" or "technical" if you are a LHBH or a RHFH player; in those cases this course was, perhaps quite literally, made for you! About 75% of the course is laid out with a slight --> severe dogleg right. A local player joined me on my first run to show me the layout, but by the time we got halfway through the course my response to his descriptions became, "Let me guess, another shot to the right." My theory is that this course was designed either by (1) a left-handed/forehand player, or (2) someone who had minimal experience with the game.

Some of the pin locations were just plain weird. Sometimes I just couldn't understand why a hole was designed the way it was! The layout was confusing and counter-intuitive at times as well.

Other Thoughts:

I felt like this disc golf course would unintentionally exclude a huge majority of local/travel disc golf players -- any beginner, any RHBH intermediate, most forehand intermediate, some RHBH advanced. If you would fall into any of these categories above, I would say that this course probably isn't for you. I would expect that a handful of birdies are possible, but not probable, and that frustration would most likely be imminent. My advice for you would be: "Stay away!" If you are NOT part of the categories above, and you are in fact a left-handed backhand player or a right-handed forehand player, this course would probably be fantastic for stealing strokes off of your RHBH friends! I'd expect birdies to be more plentiful and way easier, and my advice would be: "Go hunting!"

Since my guess is that about 80% of players would have a major disadvantage, just by the design of this course, I decided that it was only fair to take away 80% of the stars from this course.

Pros:

Great use of park elements...elevation, wooded areas, open space. Use of multiple pin placements made for variety of throws both left and right. Not so wooded that it was impossible to make your par hitting a tree off the tee. No memorable holes, but no clunkers either.
The usual positives: concrete tee pads, at least one per hole, basic signage in place, next tee markers on basket.

Cons:

Hard to follow course. We may have thrown at wrong basket on at least one occasion, if not two. Signage was inconsistent.

Multiple layouts to provide great options for all skill levels. Well maintained by the club and the township. They are constantly adding to the course to make it more interesting and challenging. Many holes have multiple tee pads and almost every single hole has multiple basket positions. Great tee signs with good visuals, yardage and positions.

Cons:

Nit picking since I play there frequently...only one trash can except for at the start, but it is about halfway through your round. Only bathrooms are at the start as well. If you are not familiar with the course, hole 2 might be hard to find but that is it.

Other Thoughts:

Sometimes during the winter they close the main gates. You can access the course by parking up top nearest the soccer fields, walk down the hill and start on hole 7. Thats what I do anyway. Many layouts are advertised at the board on hole 1. My friends and I generally play a 21 hole format just to get more golf in. A lot has been done since many of the reviews on here were posted. Varied Technical Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course makes good use of the terrain available. Has multiple tees, and multiple pin positions. It is possible to play an 18, 19, or 20 hole layout.

This is one of the most technical courses in the area. There are some extremely tight gaps that must be hit. It also has one of the very few holes in the area that requires players to lay up on their drive. That is hole 4 and it is a very difficult hole that rewards strategic play.

The course favors the technical player over a powerful distance thrower, but there are a couple holes that will benefit somebody capable of throwing 400+ feet.

There are dog legs left and right, several nice elevation shots, and a few ace run holes. About half the course will strongly benefit people that can throw putters/mids well at fairly long distances. If you are a driver only kind of golfer, then you will struggle on most of the wooded holes.

The park itself is very active with disc golfers and other people, has a playground, a music stage, several large pavilions for parties and picnics, and running/walking trails. You could conceivably entertain your entire family here all day while you disc golf.

Most of the tees are properly sized concrete.

There is a QR code on the board at the first hole you can scan with your phone to get the complete course map.

Cons:

Due to holes 9a and 11a, and signs that are falling down, the course can be difficult to navigate with certain layouts. You will always find another hole to play, but it may not be the one you were looking for.

The signs are great when they are present, but are not of sturdy construction and some are falling down.

A few more "next tee" arrows on the baskets would be nice.

Easy to get lost going from hole 1's basket to hole 2's tee.

As great it is to have a park full of people enjoying the outdoors, there will be times when the weather is nice when you will have to yield to other park users so you don't risk hitting them.

A few of the baskets don't have as many chains as the others.

Other Thoughts:

The best reason to play here is the community and the club. There are frequent club tag/doubles events here, there is also an endless stream of casual players showing up to play.

If you want to go out and meet some people to play with, this is the place to do it.

Cons:

Multi-use park. Some possible interaction with joggers, playground close to hole 1 and 18. Really need to shank that bad boy for it to come into play, though. But, definitely need to be aware and respectful of other park patrons. Some tees including Toms Longs a little undefined. Most notable complaint has always been navigation on back nine. There are nice next tee signs, great map at course start and informative tee signs at each tee. Could it all be a little better? Sure. But, it's getting there, and there is a good group o guys who truly love this course and are trying to continue to make it better. Clean course, plenty of garbage containers, grass and off the beaten path/undergrowth were mowed and fairly easy to access. (Late April 2015)

Decent signage with arrows pointing to the next tee pad location. Baskets all had flags and were in good shape.

Great little course, not too big, not too small, lots of challenging shots needed, my forehand was put to work, anny's, hyzers, tomahawks, great mix on every hole.

Perfect blend of wooded holes to open holes, lots of trees, area was maintained and mowed, no garbage, plenty of people in the background AND NOT ON THE COURSE which was nice.

Cons:

Got a tad confusing, some holes have two tee pads and i believe some tees have 1-2 basket locations ??? signs are sometimes not near the tee pad for some reason, a little clarification goes a long way. Played with a friend who has seen the course before, so we made out fine.

GREAT little course.... I had a great time, we played the course twice, i finished with a +3 and a +1 for the day.

Would absolutely come back.... I can see in the summer months the undergrowth being a little hairy, but for spring time it was amazing conditions.

I loved the challenge and variety of each hole and the approach constantly switching. Come with many discs and shot types and you should be fine.

Pros:

I liked the different, short shot selections needed. Multiple pin and tee locations, that could be found, where nice... Very clean. No thorns. Mulched paths in places.

Cons:

Unfortunately, I wasted a full hour attempting to find and play certain tees and pins. I love multiple pins...but when you have pvc poles instead of baskets..it takes allot away from it. I was hoping for better elevation changes. Not climb a hill, then throw down it. I was hoping to find holes 12 through 14. But I didn't. I was hoping for an enjoyable round. But it wasn't.

Other Thoughts:

It truly was a shame. The layout on the Web looked good, short, but technical. Unfortunately the signage was poor, or missing, or completely wrong. When some one new comes to play there is no way to get through 10 to 15 correctly...no chance. The long tees weren't always marked. The baskets were old so seeing them was impossible...a little bright paint would do wonders. It seems that it just needs a little tlc. Some love and pride in their home course. With some really good courses near by...this was a waste of time.
