When You Think You've Seen It All! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

After playing some 950 courses, I encountered two things on this simple, little small town course that I've never witnessed before anywhere.

First, the course is extremel easy to navigate. The flow is instinctive. There are little signs at each hole which just have the hole #. The concrete pads are a nice size for this course. So why could I not find the # 2 tee? After looking and looking, I finally deduced that some picnickers had dragged a picnic table onto the # 2 tee pad completely obscuring both the concrete pad and the small tee sign.

Secondly, the concrete pads here must have been poured by the same Town of Gibbon maintenance staff who staff the Gibbon Memorial Cemetery. Each of the tee pads has a little circular hole in the front corner, just like the ones that flat gravestones have so that relatives can leave flowers for the dearly deceased. Kind of like cup holders for the dead. Well now, we have cup holders for the disc golfers. Unfortunately, most of them were filled with dirt.

The little, recreational course plays around the park in a clockwise direction. Five holes are under 200 feet and the other four play up to 290'. This lovely park has scattered mature trees (reviewer and amateur botanist hollman said they were hackberry trees. I've never heard of a hackberry tree?) which provide both needed shade and challenging obstacles to throw around.

This is another of those perfect little beginner course. Easy enough for beginners and rec players. No chance of losing discs. No underbrush to get in to trouble with. And another nice stopover course as you're driving across Nebraska.

Cons:

Gibbon picnickers are masters at camouflage. Be sure to look under picnic tables for tee pads and small signs.

Not a challenging course for better players.

The park is flat.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoyable course for us rec players. Fun place to chase ACES. Nice little course for a rest break. Gibbon seems like a lovely, little historical town. I may have to start calling these courses the Nebraska 9's stealing that term from the Chicago 9's. Since I am a big fan of these types of courses, I am quite proud to bestow upon The Gibbon Disc Golf Course a lofty 2.5 rating. After all, there might be pioneers buried under each of the nine tee pads, hence the flower pot holders!

Davis Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Ample tee pads.
Peaceful and scenic park.
Excellently manicured grass, you could walk around barefooted with no worries.
Flows logically.
This is a great beginners course and the threat of loosing a disc should be nill.
The tunnel shot on hole 1 is a great hole.
The park is clean and well maintained.
Many holes have ACE RUN potential.
There are other amenities like a playground, basketball court, etc.
More experienced players can hone in their mid range and putter game.
Rounds will play quickly here.

Cons:

Mostly open holes, but there are some holes which used the trees well, its not a technical course so if that is what you are after you need to look elsewhere.
Advanced and Pro players will be bored here.
The side street is close to hole 4 so be careful not to hit a car with your throw.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very nice 9 hole beginners course in a very nicely kept small town city park. The designer(s) used what was available to the best that could be done. For the target crowd of beginning disc golfers this course hits the mark nicely. For more experienced players this course could be used to improve their short game or to warm up for a more challenging course.
A good stop if you are passing through and have the itch to throw.

If you're going to do something in Gibbon... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

* Hardly ever crowded. Very peaceful, but not isolated.
* Very quick and easy to find.
* If you have small kids who don't play, this course is ideal because it works around a centrally-located playground that is pretty nice and always visible.
* Well-maintained.
* Mature, high-pruned trees (mostly hackberry) provide nice shade and a little challenge at times that is fun for the casual round; not a lot of discs lost or time spent looking for them.
* Restrooms on the course and some lighting.
* Gas station and basic amenities are only a minute away.
* Nice pads.
* Flow is easy to comprehend.
* All tees are well marked, although the numbers should face a consistent direction as to not confuse the player into aiming for the wrong basket (I almost did this once).

Cons:

* Not the course for you if you are a veteran looking for a challenge.
* The elevation changes are typical of your fairly flat park (there aren't any to speak of). Most elevation changes provide for a little variety in scenery (about 6ft. drop max), but lend little to play variety.
* Most holes are quite short, with hole 8? being too short. This is also a "Pro" if your goal is simply to practice technique or you are playing with new DG athletes.
* Not a whole lot of variety as far as shot selection; I can't remember any doglegs and most holes are short, although I did hit several trees after 2 rounds so some aiming and thought is required.

Other Thoughts:

Hey, Gibbon should be happy with this course overall. I teetered on giving it a 2, but finally gave it a 2.5 because nothing about it really irked me. It's still fun and many small towns would be happy to call it their own. The park itself is very nice and has a long history. I live close to the course, so I will likely play it many times, but I probably wouldn't if I didn't live close. It's a perfect place to work on your putt and approach and perfect for casual play with friends and family. If you are traveling in the area and need a break, make the short trip, grab a slice of pizza a couple blocks away at the gas station and play a quick round. There's a chance you'll sink an Ace and remember it as "that course in that nice little Nebraska town where I sank that Ace."

Nice Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-A very nice and well maintained park with playground equipment, sidewalks, a fountain, baseball and basketball.
-Concrete tees
-Lots of big trees
-Nice baskets
-Signs
-Easy to follow, good flow
-Ace runs
-Good for beginners/small townspeople
-Decent stop not too far off 80.

Cons:

-All the holes seemed very similar. They all weren't too long and rarely required any specific shot. Even if you botched your tee shot it was very easy to get a 3.
-If the rest of the park was busy it could get crowded and you would have to be careful when throwing.

Other Thoughts:

There are no major safety or design flaws on this course. It is simply a short, beginner course in a nice little park in a nice little town in Nebraska. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to play again but if I were in town I would play.

Mature trees.
Close parking.
Low traffic area.

Cons:

Not challenging.
Not exciting.
Street is in play on multiple holes.

Other Thoughts:

I would say a must play if you're in the area but not worth it's own trip. I like this course. Great for low skilled and short drive players.

Great Family Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well layed out course that flows around the outside edge of the park. In the middle of the park is a well kept playground which provides for a good place for the family to play or hang out for the day while you play. This course is good for someone just learning the game of disc golf or has not yet mastered the long distance drive yet. It never puts you in a bad spot where you might be getting in the way of people in the park playing.

Cons:

A couple of the holes put you in danger of overthrowing or rolling into the street but there is always the option to play the hole away from the street until you are within putting range.

Other Thoughts:

Hole #7 is missing the post marker due to vandals. It is noted in the pictures though so if you are worried about not finding it you could print the picture which will give you an idea of where the teepad is located at.
